ABEC - Annular Bearing Engineering Comitee, the rating is a rating of the tightness of tolerances. You're right, there's very little relevance to skating. Zealous bearings roll a bit slower than Reds because they're packed with a thick grease, rather than a light oil. Zealous uses a proprietary grease with nano-ceramic particles that actually fill in irregularities in the metal as they heat up while rolling, according to their marketing. However, as a user, they roll much faster after a few sessions. The best part of the dual Buna rubber shields paired with the grease, is that it is almost unaffected by rain. Water can't really get in and even if it does, it can't rust cuz everything is coated with grease. Any of Bones Reds -branded bearings, including Reds, Race Reds, Reds Big Balls, etc, are all made in China. They became famous for their Swiss bearings, and Bones claims they have such tight control over their Chinese suppliers that they're very close to the quality of the Swiss bearings. Never used them so can't comment tho. Have used Reds, liked them tho. Ceramic bearings use ceramic balls, but the races and rings are still steel, so they can still rust. Spacers perform a vital function, they keep the inner/outer rings from hanging up on the balls when subjected to lateral forces, like during a turn or a slide. It's one of the main reasons (in theory) why bearings without spacers tend to get wrekt quicker than ones with them. I'd suggest giving Oust bearings a try. Mostly because they claim to use the MOC scale, which is different than Abec, and also not comparable. They have apparently re-engineered their bearings to have deeper races and higher quality steel/surface finishes than other bearings, which supposedly leads to less wear for lateral forces. A lot of slalom guys seem to swear by them too, fwiw. I think the type of lube used has way more to do with the free spin of a bearing than anything else. You can throw plain old white lithium grease in a bearing, and it'll still roll and work great, but the grease causes more resistance than a lighter oil, like Bones Speed Cream. Technically tho, any type of fishing reel or sewing machine oil would work great in bearings. Grease works best if you're taking them out in shitty conditions more often. Hope some of this helped. Thanks for your impressions on these bearings!

WOW Thank you so much for this comment! some wonderful info here, and thanks for the suggestion. Hope this helps others too!

The comment on lube is big fax. Pretty much any bearing in the $12-$20 price range is essentially the same, but the lube that is used makes all the difference between a bearing that rolls fast and/or how long it lasts. Abec is dumb marketing, if I'm not mistaken it's mostly used for machines that use bearings that spin at crazy rpms that even someone going 45mph down a hill couldn't do.
@PhantomGett
@PhantomGett 3 года назад
@@waltersensei9122 to the credit of the actual group of engineers who designed and set the standard, it is at least a real thing. But you're right, it's more relevant for industrial applications. Annular (the A in ABEC) means ring-shaped, from the Latin word Annulus, meaning a an encircling structure. The ABEC rating is a scale of the tightness of tolerances taking into account radial forces. It does not however, take into account lateral or torsional forces, steel grade, surface finish, etc. In reality, an ABEC 3-rated bearing can be better for a skating application than an ABEC 9-rated bearing. But some companies use the ABEC rating as marketing to give their bearings a speed-rating and it just doesn't work because skateboard wheels spin a lot slower in a wheel than they do in any industrial application. "Skate-rated" bearings from companies like Bones are cool, but don't necessarily mean much if someone else doesn't know what the particulars are of the standard that Bones uses. "Swiss" also doesn't really mean anything for bearings. In Bones's case, it means produced in Switzerland on Swiss gear. It's stated to be higher quality materials/finishes n such, and they probably kick ass. Bones themselves say that their Reds are like 80% as good as their Swiss, and pretty sure they claim that the Super Reds are even closer. The Big Balls Reds are supposedly pretty close to the Bones Swiss 6 bearings. Oust uses the MOC Scale to rate their bearings, but I've heard conflicting information on whether that scale was created by them or a pre-existing standard. Bottom line, almost any bearing of decent quality should perform as well as any other bearing of decent quality, given they've had a similar lube applied. But you don't have to use Speed Cream on your Bones Reds. Try Oust's MET-OL, or Sonic Super Oil, or even DAYLube Nano-ceramic grease to try and replicate the feel of Zealous. 😂 I actually do want to try just that.

Zealous bearings have thick lube that thins out at higher speeds because of friction warming it up, in other words they're best when you're ripping down a mountain at 30+ mph. Spaceballs are good but Zealous are just as good if not better for $10 less, but the fact they come with every Landyachtz complete is pretty cool. That's just my opinion though. It seems like bearings are more personal preference than one would think. Keep up the food work tho, the videos are getting better each time 😎👍 Edit: Also, I think Zealous tend to be really comfortable even in the rain because of the thick lube which is why so many people use them instead of ceramics when it rains.

I've tried Bones Reds, Zealous, Spaceballs, and a few other no name brand ABEC bearings. In terms of absolute speed, Bones def wins for me. However, I don't think I had the Spaceballs long enough to break em in properly. Zealous is a close second for me tho. Maintenance wise tho, I personally hate having to deal with spacers and speed rings, so Zealous is currently my favorite (until I get another set of spaceballs to ride long term) I've also heard good things about Bronson's G2 bearings, but personally haven't tried em myself

I respect your opinion, but I have tried them all. S Tier bearings are actually NTN & NSK, S Tier bearing lube is Archoil Ceramic Grease (used in Zealous bearings). NSK & NTN are occasionally available on Amazon in size 608 sold in 10 packs for $20. NTN’s with Archoil are unbelievable…. beyond top-tier

i have spaceball ceramics on my crusier, how worried should i be worried about puddles and rain? is it really weather proof compared to normal bearings? or is it marketing crap, i wouldn’t be riding when it’s pouring just wondering about trails and sidewalks after it’s rained
@OgdenSikel
@OgdenSikel 2 года назад
If they get slightly damp it means they should likely be okay, probably not a good idea to get them soaking but in your case I don’t think that’ll be too much of an issue… Also if your cruiser has really wide wheels, water form sidewalks doesn’t actually reach the bearings (At least from what I’ve experienced with my hawgs 72mm wheels on my dinghy cruiser)

Spaceball bearings. You said as good as day one. Don’t believe it. My space ball bearings after a few weeks are hundred times better than day one after they are broken in. Love the bearings. But if you are just trying them, give them a week of breaking in before you see how good they are. And the wheel size has a lot to do with the roll. Plow kings will do better than 56 90a wheels in terms of roll
@MaxxRemKing1
@MaxxRemKing1 11 месяцев назад
I skated on the Spaceballs 3x with the Fatty Hawgs and I am a little disappointed how uneven they seem. One wheel seems much faster than the rest but by the comments and Ogden’s rating I guess I am still breaking them in. I’m thinking of getting the Supremes or the Plow Kings though as an upgrade
@nunyabiz012
@nunyabiz012 2 года назад
One thing you left out are industrial bearings. I’ve been riding industrial bearings for about 2 years now and can’t notice a major difference to name brand ones. Oh, and they only cost about 0.30cents / bearing. They use grease not oil, but that also means you don’t have to clean them and re-oil them. And at that price you can just get a set of new ones when they don’t perform up to snuff anymore.

you can! here is the link from their website: landyachtz.com/collections/accessories/products/spaceballs and yes, they are great with longboards too! one thing I will say though is that they take longer to break in than typical bearings...so you really have to give it a good 10-20 miles before they reach their full potential
