( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2021 Toyota Venza returns with a sharp design based on the global market Harrier. It feels solid and its hybrid powertrain makes it efficient, but does this crossover starting at $33,645 drive as well as it looks? We find out how well the new Venza works in this buddy review and give it a rating of "Buy it, Lease it, Rent it or Forget it"!

There’s no way that Toyota didn’t know that Honda figured out that people hate Touch Sensitive volume controls. Absolutely baffling why they would put them in this car.

Keep in mind that this has been out in Japan for years. People may have not complained about it for some reason. If people here have an issue, they will likely replace it with a knob.

It's a nitpick. How often do you really reach over to the console controls to change volume? It has wheel controls for a reason.

Why do people like journalists care so much about how a car drives? They drive the same. The majority of people who buy cars buy it for family vehicles or sensible daily drivers. No one is gonna be doing 0-60 and quarter mile or driving on roads like a jerk, cutting off people in traffic just because they have the power to. Also why is more power better? No ones ever going to be able to use it. Even if they do it’ll last only a few seconds maybe a couple mins. Just because a car is fast and has tight steering and sports car handling doesn’t make that vehicle the better option or even necessarily the safe option. If that’s so, why do cars like Camrys or rav4s or corollas outsell all the performance or European brands put together?

Lovely design but here are some concerns. 1. It's larger than a RAV4 but smaller on the inside. 2. Less headroom than a RAV4, and even less with the sunroof. 3. No volume knob on the larger 10" screen. 4. The rear turn signal lights are integrated into the bumper and are too low. 5. Offer it as a plug-in hybrid. 6. Would prefer a moonroof (opens to the elements) than a sunroof with the glass that frosts on/ off. 7. Three inches shorter than the old Venza. 8. Touch-sensitive controls are a disappointment.

(harsh compered to older cars) Oh sure they handle better, but who is REALLY gonna carve up canyon roads in their $44k Avalon??? We NEED more "Old Buick" kind of road isolation cars still. GREAT review guys!

the Harrier has been quite a top seller in Asia for generations after generations, and we have a 2L naturally aspirated and a 2L turbo engine variants... the hybrid seemed to be around for the Lexus RX for some time already, we'll have to wait for a hybrid Harrier though...

Elderly parents just picked one up. The Venza LE is similarly equipped to the RAV4 XLE Premium Hybrid. Couple hundred in difference out-the-door cost. Venza has a much more quiet interior and smoother ride, which made all the difference. Definitely a feel of luxury. LE has smaller infotainment screen, but physical buttons are so much more convenient. By the way, agree a lot with Tommy on this one

I dont know about a whale, but it does look like a harrier hawk. I definitely love JDM all day and the fact that it's hybrid only with Lexus looks has me absolutely sold! A sports car should be a 2 door coupe a functional crossover should be absolutely what this new Venza is.

LOL AT THE “Without the Lexus Price Tag”. The NX literally starts at the same price of $39k USD... and being an NX owner most of this is NX based, profile shape, front end, the A, B and C pillars, the seats, dash, soft touch material, leather. Fun Fact: the Harrier in Asia is the Lexus first and second generation RX in the US.

May 2021. I just bought the Limited with the Panoramic sunroof. It was between this or the Lincoln Corsair. My comments are on the infotainment system. Sure, it’s confusing if you don’t read the manuals. Car reviewers don’t have time to read the manuals. Took me about 5 hours to learn most commonly used items. Our windshield fogged up. Couldn’t find the right button. Needed to read the manual after we got home. Basically, a buyer will learn the functions quickly. I like it.

I agree with Roman that it’s a JDM car, which is refreshing. It’s got the look and feel of its Japanese heritage and was made in Japan. Roman may remember the JDM cars of the 80s and 90s like Prelude, Celica and MR2 that had Japan heritage. Now most Japanese cars try to be Buicks or Lincolns.

I had a 2007 Avalon Limited. Fantastic car that I was sad to part with. When I parted with it, I was not interested in a 2013-2018 Avalon. They really went down in quality and you just didn’t get as much for your money. I bought a 2011 Venza to get me around Boulder. No complaints with it, another example of getting a lot for your money from toyota. I need a V6 engine at this altitude and I have to say, if I had to get rid of my current Venza, I wouldn’t be looking at getting this new one. Too small, too expensive, too slow. One of my great measuring tools for tracking the quality and value for cost of these cars is watching what speakers they offer. You can get a 9 speaker stereo. Great if that does it for you, but my current Venza has 13. So why upgrade? Apple CarPlay and better MPG? Not worth all that much to me right now.

I have a Venza, at first the touch controls were a little hard to get use too. I find them easy to use, now that I’m more familiar with the vehicle. For the volume if you press and hold it increases/decreases volume quickly. I actually enjoy the clean look, I will say my biggest gripe is the beeping when you press a button. There is an option to shut it off in the settings, however, that only applies to touching buttons on the screen.

I really like the almost 39 mpg and the nice your too close to the lane assist unlike my 2020 Honda CR-V touring, which my sister secret Santa me with, which it’s a bully and extremely sensitive. I normally drive with the lane assist off because it keeps bouncing me left to right unlike the venza much finer tuned. Honda step up your game! I can’t get the MPG as promised on my CR-V even while driving within speed limits 😔 wish I could get a VENZA with some of my CR-V specs but I guess you can’t have it all. Toyota does ECVT with physical first gear and planetary gears. Ultra reliable and super smooth, especially at highway speeds.

More Japanese looking to me. Good styling though and I definitely see where you say it looks like a whale lol I think it's a blue whale the one you're thinking of

I wouldn’t mind the touch volume knob if the head unit will auto-adjust volume based on speed like my 2019 Ram Longhorn does. Does it?

It looks smaller in comparison to the 1st gen. model. The rims are too busy-looking; hard to clean. 5-spoke rims will compliment this new model a lot nicer.

The Venza is a very nice looking vehicle with lots of tech. However, I read one review that complained that the front seats were short with no cushion extensions. Worse, the drivers seat doesn't tilt up and down, a major omission. I'm 6'2" tall and wonder if I could get comfortable. Lots of cars don't have cushion extensions, but I can usually get comfortable by tilting the seat up. How did you find the drivers seat and driving position?

You didn't mention that the passenger seat does not have lumbar nor mimics the driver's seat in any way. That's a bummer!

I like Hybrids that you don't have to plug in. This vehicle does not impress me. If I were to drop down from a mid size SUV to a small SUV, I would take the Rav4 Hybrid. IDK about the Prime because of the price, but def. more my style. And no, the touch volume controls in the center suck. It is redundant in the heat/ac controls as well. I would not buy or lease it. lol

I really really like the styling. And it does look like it has a whale mouth and that’s awesome!

Funny to see the generation gap between father and son. If I have a son that’s opinionated like Tommy I’d be so happy.
