Should Kia consider making the next-generation Stinger all-electric? The powertrain from the EV6 GT would be awesome in this car someday. 😬 Thanks again to Keeps for sponsoring this video! Be sure to go to www.keeps.com/redline to get 50% off your first order!
I was just thinking the same thing, an all electric Stinger would smash a Tesla. I'd even prefer if they left the shifter exactly the same, just make it electric. Don't make it ugly and give it stupid wheels, drop a big battery in the floor and GO!!
@@rickyayy I disagree. By far the "biggest upgrade for 2022" is the replacement of the 2.0L turbo 4 with the 2.5L engine in the base GT-Line Stinger and offered as standard or optional in at least 9 KIA, Hyundai, and Genesis models. For a difference in 0-60 acceleration between the GT-Line and the GT2 of as little half a second, a weight advantage of the base Stinger amounting to the weight of an NFL linebacker and a price advantage of up to $15,000, the GT-Line is a screaming bargain compared to the GT2. BTW, Sofyan's MSRP comparisons are somewhat confusing. A GT-Line AWD version with the "Sun and Sound" package that adds a sunroof and 15 speaker sound system has an MSRP of $41,635 including destination. The AWD GT1 with the V6 engine comes in at $46,935. In addition to the engine it has several other upgrades, most notably electronically controlled suspension and torque vectoring AWD but it lacks the upgraded sound available in the GT-Line. The GT2 restores the upgraded audio and adds a number of other relatively minor upgrades over the GT1 but comes at an MSRP $56,320 with AWD and the $1300 "Scorpion" package consisting of some appearance features. If one is trying to match the luxury features of some European rivals the GT2 may be a bargain. But the "value" choices are clearly the GT-Line and GT1 models.
@@drodriguez1724 Scorpion package with AWD should be right around $56.5k. much more than that and it's probably a dealer "market adjustment" which I wouldn't want to pay. I got mine at MSRP and in this market I wasn't going to even try and negotiate down, but it was worth every penny! As was said in the review, it is a properly fast car with the 3.3L V6 and it's extremely practical. If you need a one-car-that-does-it-all solution, like me, I think the Stinger tops that list hands down!
I just bought a 2022 Stinger GT2 RWD. This is hands down the nicest car I have ever owned. A true blast to drive! People that discount this car because it is a KIA are really missing out.
I've had my GT2 for over 2 years. Such an amazing car. If they are giving the Stinger the ax, I hope they produce one more version to go all out. Maybe 400+ hp would be awesome. This is such a special and important car for KIA.
Dude your delivery is fantastic. Love the unbroken string of though as you make your point. Puts a lot of the other car review makers who make lots of cuts (looking at you Doug) to shame. Well done.
The styling on this car is just so PERFECT-I had a GT1 and now I have a GT-line because I didn't need all that power (and higher insurance rates haha). Beautiful inside and out (mine is Panthera grey with red leather)-I am keeping this car forever-I think it's a timeless design that is aging VERY well.
If you needed one car to be a Swiss Army Knife, to be good looking, well-built, latest tech, strong power, fun to drive, and has room for people and stuff, plus AWD, this is a great choice, if you can only have 1 vehicle, for under $50k (Kia dealers will happily sell you a loaded model for $5-10k off)
@@jacobrael9872 yeah but the base model kinda got hit with the nerf hammer in all the other ways but the engine. You're still stuck with that chintzy 3" or whatever screen in between your guages where the updated 7" LCD one would be, you get gloss black plastic everywhere instead of aluminum & faux aluminum. And for me, gloss black is deesgustiiing. Don't get me wrong it's still a good car for some people but I couldn't rock the GT-line. I _thought_ that the GT-line was going to be able to be fully optioned outside of some features you only get on the GT2 like power lift gate, adaptive headlights and all that jazz, but the inability to get the same interior and features and sacrifice the nicer engine makes it a loss for me.
I have 2 Stingers. A 2019 GT2 AWD fully loaded red with black interior. It turns a lot of heads. By far my favorite car. I also have a 2020 GT1 is ready wheel in white with red interior. If I have my way I will get a 2022. Praying they will have one in 2023. I saw this car at the car show when it was a concept car. I was so happy that it finally was put in the Kia line up. Now if they would just keep making I would love it. It definitely makes heads turns and when somebody asks what kind of car it is they are very surprised when I say it’s a Kia. The price point is also a positive! Keep making the Stinger Kia it’s a blast to drive!
This car still turns my head every time I see it. I love the design and the color schemes they have for this car. Something about this car evokes a lot of emotion just looking at it, and that's coming from an Audi guy. Such a cool looking car.
I have had my 2022 GT1 RWD Stinger for 4 months now and all I can say is what a car. The duality of this car makes it super appealing. If you want to have a nice chill drive it is super comfortable and if you want to hoon it its also satisfying due to its immense power. I will say almost all KIA products I have experienced all look really nice, but when you look closer the veneer can't disguise the cheap materials used. This car is the exception this has to be some of the nicest materials I have seen in any non-German car. The real metal, napa leather, and soft touch materials (almost zero gloss black thankfully) really make this a very well appointed car that will impress almost any one. Also the reliability of this car is good with no major issues to speak of. I came from a 2018 Civic Si coupe and the only things I miss from that car are the manual and the lightweight feeling. Your best bet is to go for the GT1 MSRP is $43k and I fortunately skirted the dealer mark-ups for an out the door price of $46k. Yes I would have liked to have some of the extra features that the GT2 offers, but it is not worth the extra $10k+ to me. If you are in the market for a full-sized sedan you could have a loaded out Accord, Camry, or Maxima, but why in the hell would you this car is at least twice as good as those cars. I would argue with the amount of room in the hatch this could easily beat out a small SUV in practicality. So just get over your brand/badge snobbery and go test drive this car and you will be sold on it.
I’ve always thought Kia underrated their HP and 0-60 times Because my stock RWD, Stinger GT runs 4.5secs consistently And I’ve raced a couple scat packs and 5.0 Mustangs and it’s almost always an even race, they’ll usually get me on the top end (triple digits)
Excellent review. I have said it so many times nd I will say it again. This is the best value for money car on the road when everything is considered. Consider standard equipment, price, performance, driving experience, quality and warranty and nothing comes close. Buy an equivalent German specced car here in Oz and it will cost twice as much. Love mine
Kia/Hyundai are definitely doing some good stuff these days. This price point has a lot of tough competition, but if you need the space, you can't beat that liftback!
On your 0-60 runs on this and all of your other test vehicles, it would be nice if you would do at least one 0-60 run without brake-torque and without launch control. Just old school letting off the brakes and punching the gas pedal. It would be great to know what the results would be if someone just suddenly punched the gas to the floor from a stop without any preparation. Just one run like that on each review would be appreciated.
Facts. The worst year for sales was the launch year if I'm not mistaken. They knew going into this that this car wasn't going to be flying off the shelves. It would really suck donkey dick if Kia got rid of ANOTHER sedan, their best one at that... They already scrapped the K900 and the Cadenza last year. I see absolutely no reason to give up on the Halo car already. Especially when the rest of the brand doesn't hold up to snuff to the Stinger. The Telluride is probably the only highly competent model but I feel like ditching the Stinger would hurt the brand more than help. There's nothing wrong with the car and lots of people wouldn't and shouldn't forgive them for it.
@@UnrealOG137 there may have never been a point. The K900 was just a well appointed luxury sedan you could buy if you didn't need the badge to be part of your driving/driven experience. But that's a really small market as it is. I can fully understand why Hyundai wouldn't want to be competing with themselves, or even if it was a decision as petty as them not wanting to have people be able to point at the Kia K900 and say look it's the same as a G90. That hurts the pedigree of the G90. So they killed it for the north American market where people don't appreciate sedans, much less super luxury sedans made by the Koreans who have no clout yet. When America is ready to give Kia and Hyundai the attention and money they deserve, perhaps we'll see cars like the Cadenza (now the K8 still living on in South Korea) and the Azera (Granduer) return. Time will tell.
@@UnrealOG137 I was looking for a K900 a few years back. Sad it's gone. I don't understand the point of genesis in general. That market is over saturated. They better off going for luxury SUVs and challenging Land Rover.
@@porfiriato84 Mainly just a little of little things that all added up to sully the overall experience. In order from most to least annoying (google these and you'll find that they're common complaints) 1. Transmission drag: When coming to a stop, it is basically *impossible* to coast or brake to a stop smoothly. The transmission downshifts in a way that it causes jerky deceleration that has no relation to how hard you are pressing the brake pedal. Very frustrating and really gave me buyers remorse within 500 miles of driving. The issue is most pronounced in Sport mode but it exists in all driving modes. 2. Interior ticks, creaks, and rattles: Door and sunroof seals ticking/creaking constantly. This may bother me more than others because I value a quiet cabin. I don't necessarily mind engine noise, but interior/seal creaks and rattles just really are unacceptable for a $50k+ car (don't pay that much for one of these, btw. They can be had for $45k or less using lease buyouts). 3. "Surgy" cruise control: I have never had a car that had a cruise control that always felt like it was coming on and off throttle to maintain a constant speed. If you get on the interstate and put the Stinger on cruise, you will notice that it is constantly "surging" to maintain its speed. All other cars I've had have just kept the speed. Really made me feel like the refinement wasn't there. 4. Tech: I generally loved the 360 degree camera and the while I dislike the surginess of the cruise, I did really enjoy the adaptive cruise feature. With that said, the adaptive cruise wasn't perfect. If I was on the interstate and someone merged really closely to me (assholes trying to squeeze between two cars at high speeds) the Stinger would break very strongly almost to the point where it was unsafe. Aside from that, the parking sensors or front collision sensors (can't remember which) would randomly start going off when sitting behind a car traffic lights. The sound system was not very great. I know that Sofyan said it was good in this review, but unless Kia changed something between MY19 and MY22, I disagree with him. The sound system in my 06 Lexus IS250 was superior to the Stinger. 5. Dealership experience: Kia dealerships are simply inferior to the premium dealers. Kia corporate came through and helped solve any complaint I have, but I had a couple of bad-to-subpar experiences with the dealers themselves. 6. Power: The car is quick from a stop. From 0-60 you'll love it. With that said, it is NOT a fast car from a roll. And if you are driving over 60mph and you step on it to pass someone, you'll be surprised just how little torque and power there is. 7. Subpar fuel economy: To reach the fuel estimates you would need to drive in eco mode like a granny. 8. Small gas tank: The fact that it drinks gas AND has a small gas tank means you will need to refill often. 9. Direct injection concerns: Because it has only direct injection (and no port injection) you will have to install oil catch cans. If you don't, you will have carbon buildup. This isn't necessarily a Stinger only problem, but it is something to know. I'm probably forgetting a few things, but that is the gist of it.
I was honestly considering the upcoming WRX as a daily AWD sedan, but I'd consider spending more money for this instead. Also, the new design language of the 2022 WRX just doesn't do it for me and the Stinger looks great
Would have loved to see a proper 6sp MT for this update. Seriously disappointing that all these companies are trying to bring back performance minded sedans but keep feeding drivers automatic only.
I had a 2021.. same car /color AWD for a year but had a bad back injury and traded it in on a GV70. I miss it. it's a great car.. Really great for the money. As far as the exhaust he talked about is the same with a Hyundai products. It's rev hang. It doesn't release quickly so when gassing it in Park it just hangs..
I’ve had a Stinger on lease for the past three years and it is due to go back in August. I can’t find anything out there that could replace it (I’ve had Audis, and Mercedes which all went back after the lease) so I’ve decided to buy it off the lease company and will be keeping it for quite some time I think.
Seeing how thorough and informative your review for the 2024 Mazda 3 Turbo hatchback was, I decided I needed to check to see if you had a review for another car I was considering: the Kia Stinger. I enjoyed the review, and I would love to see you revisit the Stinger in the future. Great content!
Genesis better take note: Make the redesigned G70 a liftback! As for Acura, do not take the negative criticism against the new Integra as an excuse to not make a liftback TLX. Ideally, I'd like to see a Wagon TLX, but at least develop a liftback if no wagon
Wagons are less than 5% of the world market, less than 2% of the us market. No one invests money in wagons and for good reason. Hatchbacks are nearly as bad and the only ones that sell are in smaller vehicles...and even those sell in much smaller numbers than equivalent cars with trunks.
@@casualsuede With those numbers, you need to take into account that cars with trunks are also cheaper than hatchback/wagon versions, which explains a bit the higher sales traditional sedans get. In the case of Kia, more people would buy the K5 over the stinger because the k5 is cheaper by over $10k. That doesn’t mean that the stinger is less desirable than a k5. Also, Subaru and the VW group would disagree with your statements.
I would like to see a factory 2-door, no sunroof, lightweight carbon fibre hood, roof and hatch, and other weight-saving mods where possible, shortened wheelbase wide body with 10" wheels, functional but subtle CAI picking up air at the base of the windscreen ala L88 Corvette, upgraded turbos, ECU and exhaust with an easy 400 - 450 hp, sequential manual and 4WD option for the puritans. C'mon KIA, you can do it.
Bought my 2019 GT2, same color combo, over 2 years ago. I'm still very satisfied with my purchase. It's not perfect in every way, but it's very fun to walk up to and to drive, especially on twisty back roads. A lot of German for a not so German price. Just enough utility as well. It is a head turner and gets tons of comments and compliments tough I wasn't buying it for that reason. The dealership experience isn't great (coming from a premium label car), but not a deal breaker. It's nice to drive something different than most other cars out there. I do feel bad for those who are paying retail (or more) now. Kia was cutting huge deals when I purchased given the low sales numbers. Not sure what I would trade this in for eventually given the style, power, and price. I do hope they keep making and improving this car, but rumor is it's going away. All electric Stinger? Not sure I could adjust to that. Give us one more generation of gas, make it sound better and put out 450+ hp and I would likely buy another one!
People who hate on Stingers either never drove one or got gapped by one 😂. Best car I’ve ever owned. Everyone turns their heads when I drive by, and get so many compliments.
Just hope everyone who buys one has better luck than I did with my company Kia Souls. Had 6 of them and had nothing but problems that the dealership could not fix. Even had to change out engines because the couldn't find the problems.
Good looking car! Also I see lots of complaints for dealership service. I hope those of you impacted are formally raising complaints. That’s how they know to improve.
The Stinger has much more beauty, design, looks and overall power than its competitors. It's a wonderful car and at an excellent price, impressive how this Stinger awakens eyes on the streets for its friendliness of the set 👏🥂 Kia should NOT end its production yet! I'm also trying to buy a GT2 in this ceramic silver color, but I can't find it…😢
@@djzulumask2138 Because I made over 10k on it and I bought a Mazda CX-30 turbo Premium Plus and now own the CX-30 and have 40k in the bank for my next vehicle which will be the GLA 45 AMG when they bring the euro spec over in 2024--a 400 Plus HP Inline 4 Turbo with AWD and a top speed of 175 plus--under 70k and gets 30 MPG if you do not dog it. So that is my plan.I also drive veterans around to medical appts and the stinger sat too low for some to get into and I did not realize that when i bought it--but main reason is it went up in value--I had 2 people overnight checks for my stinger within 12 hours of putting it up for sale and I sold it for a 10k profit.( I also owned the stinger) I actually went to buy a GV70 and the Mazda was on the lot and it felt just as fast and I decided to get it because it is very easy to drive--sits up high and is very fast for what it is and was a steal for me--35k is what i paid and it is now worth 38k right now and 36,800 on trade--so it already has gone up in value.
Quick note about the car audio for potential buyers - the Harmon Kardon system in the Stinger is not exceptional. It's good enough, at best. It's barely class competitive. Turning the volume up will quickly reveal the harshness from the cheap speakers. Many Stinger owners are swapping out speakers or going full custom system. Disconnecting the dash (center) speaker helps a little, it's a crappy 4" speaker that the HK system sends a lot of the vocals to depending on what sound effect settings you have enabled.
Sofyan, if your ears aren't hearing it you may need to defer to others to supply you with accurate information. You're doing the car community a disservice reporting erroneous information about the products.
I had two stingers (GT1 and GT2) Great cars. However, reliability is not as good as expected. GT2 problems with the Auto shutoff (never worked), unbearable rattles from the sunroof and a recall that can get fire in the engine. GT1 with sounds from the doors (Door bushings) and weak structure (not as rigid as expected). But the highest disappointing factor and the major issue is the service at the Kia Dealers. The car is premium but service not. Now with these crazy prices, the V6 is beyond the target. I see that Kia will discontinue it soon.
Totally agree. I love my GT1 but Kia service is the worst I've ever experienced in 30 years of owning cars. Even my experience with a Volkswagen service department was like Cadillac/Lincoln compared to Kia. So disappointing.
There were rumors going around that they were indeed killing off the stinger by Q2 of 2022, but in the last month that rumor has been denied. They will still be making the stinger well into the future as sales are doing well for the vehicle.
Dealer services I agree. But everything else is luck if the draw. I’ve had my GT for about 2 years now. Only annoying issue is dealers. But I just go to private mechanic only dealer if warranty work is needed.
My friend had this car for two years and had many issues including turbo going out at 27k I would think 🤔 twice before buying any Kia but they are fun cars when they working perfectly
Probably had a lemon I had my 2019 stinger gt awd and put about 60k miles on it so far of hard miles and I’m jb4 tuned with intakes and exhaust, I have had no issues
Too bad the dealers aren't up to par. Spend $50K+ on a car, but get treated like buying a third rate used car. Sure dealer experiences vary, but the above is more common than not.
My experience with KIA must be the exception that proves the rule or something. In 2019, I located a Sorento SXL at a dealer in Phoenix, AZ (the only one instate in the exact color combination we wanted), drove 120 mi up from Tucson, arrived at about 8 pm on the last day of the month, walked into the dealership, pointed to the car, and made an offer at 20% under the sticker price. SOLD! Admittedly, back in Tucson, I have to schedule service appointments three weeks out, but the recommended intervals are 7,500 miles and we've had no problems with the car otherwise.
Have you have you heard of anyone questioning Kia about not offering wireless CarPlay with the bigger screens? Some of their decision making gives me pause. That’s something that should be included. One reason to use their navigation over the phone navigation is to take advantage of the heads up display. With that said I think they should allow casting of CarPlay to the heads up display. In 2020 the Stinger GT2 was their most expensive (flagship) vehicle yet it didn’t offer an integrated remote starter, the updated navigation screen from the Kia Soul,, LKA level 2 or the Kia app compatibility. Maybe that should’ve been a sign that the Stinger was more of a project vehicle than a long term offering.
I wasn’t a fan of the fake hood vents on my Stinger, especially because they were gloss black. I ordered replacement hood vents that were overlayed in genuine carbon fiber and swapped them out. Really like the way the hood vents look now!
Not sure comparing the Stinger’s 10.25” screen to the G70’s 14” screen as small is fair considering the G70 also actually only has a 10.25” screen. Details matter, get them correct please.
Has Kia improved the structure or build quality in the car? Several reviews of earlier cars complained of poor rigidity and horrible rattles with hatch , sunroof, and doors.
I had Posted on your other review of this that i like the refresh but rather have the previous models taillights. I saw one out of town at night and didnt care for the taillight design.
Kia has really stepped up I have a Forte lx 2017 no cruise controll but still even with a 2.0 engine has surprised me like ALOT. yes the transmission isn't the best I don't like letting of the gas to shift on gear four but still gas mileage plus comfortable highway merge makes me feel decent considering the price I'm paying overall btw I just hit 60k 2 weeks ago I don't like my payment but I do like my car an price I'm paying
@@Lash012 The older taillights looked like the dodge dart, charger, Chrysler Pacifica. That was the theme back in 2015-18, light bars are the theme now. I want a fan art first but man seeing it in person I absolutely love the new taillights, just wish the turn signals were sequential like they are in Korea/Europe
Wish they would have put a digital cockpit in the top spec Stinger. Also, wish the gas mileage would have been at least 10% better. M340i can get 30mpg on highway and low 20’s in town. Best looking car in its class. Great buy for the money.
I'd get one but the kia dealership experience is terrible especially compared to the germans. Also this car is a bit too heavy when I test drove it on some back roads
Kia and Hyundai are really coming with very appealing cars. But after couple of years does the quality remain the same as when we actually bought the car? Does the interior parts produce rattle sound etc because quality remains the same for Toyota, Honda, German Cars even after few years?
I’m going to say something, I like the design, I like the interior and I like the power and the performance it has “ not really the engine sound” but there’s something that comes in my head and reminds me that is a Kia, I think it’s all mentally but I mean for the money sure I’ll take it, it’s probably the only Kia I would buy, but if money isn’t a problem at all, I’ll just go for the Acura because I think it’s the best looking in the segment, it sounds really good, has a good amount of space and an amazing AWD and at the end of the day is engineered by Honda so it must be reliable, if it wasn’t the Acura then the S4, I think both the S4 and Type S are the best all around car, not really the best at something but it just does everything good, the other one could be the IS500, I love the M340i but I would only take it because of the performance and the fact that I could make a lottt of power out of that car very easy, the Acura doesn’t have aftermarket parts at all and with a bunch of parts and money I could make the S4 a 3 second car 0-60 so 🤷🏻♂️
The s4 is a true good at everything but not the best at anything………type s on the other hand is just not good at anything. Only good thing is it’s looks which are subjective.
@@Steve-qi3moI agree with you about the back seat but just because it is slower in a straight line doesn’t mean it is less practical. In my opinion, practically speaking, the Type S would be wonderful to drive on a daily basis and has more than enough power to have some fun if you want to punch it. People get too caught up on the whole 0-60 thing. That isn’t really practical at all unless your only concern is peak performance.
i think a new generation stinger with the cooperate V6 3.5 with twin turbos, id like to see them squeeze between 450-500 hp out of it. or add an electric to the combustion.it shouldnt go pure electric yet
The 3.3 is very underrated from factory. Very light tune with no exhaust modifications has these engines making 420whp, 480ft-lbs. And that's about 490hp at the crank
With the EV6 KIA is obviously putting its performance "eggs" in EV basket, the ICE versions of the Stinger can't possibly match the performance of the top trim EV6. So it seems inevitable that the Stinger will either be fully electrified or dropped. And considering the ever declining market for sedans, I suspect it will be the latter by 2023. The Stinger has never come close to KIA's hopes in terms of sales and despite the value proposition of the GT-Line, especially in comparison to vehicles like the K5 GT, that's not likely to change for 2022.
Performance definitely matches that of the EV6 if you're talking about 0-60 (4.4-4.7 vs 4.6). Cornering, breaking, 1/4 mile there's no question the stinger will be the better performance. Has a more capable suspension setup, better brakes and weighs less. Don't forget the EV6 is a crossover.
I will challenge anyone on the fence, drive it. It’s comfy, the sound system rocks, it’s alive. I stopped daily driving BMW for this car. And if you can afford it new, that warranty is just beyond insane…
