So basically it’s a civic coupe with a new Prius looking front end. This ain’t fam. The civic coupe sold poorly and I don’t expect this to do too much better unless it’s priced right, has a manual option, and has 300ish hp. Just my opinion.
I only WISH a manual would increase sales. I am blessed to have a 2009 Cayman, stick-shift (NOT THE S!) with 252 horsepower and it has more than enough power to thrill me on the road, and enough to get me in trouble. (especially on on-ramps while I hit 7000 rpm in second gear with a screaming engine behind me). Companies that had committed to the manual transmissions have learned that despite the language in these forums, few people want to learn to shift. And now that manual shifting brings worse gas mileage, it becomes less of choice for an everyday driver. So, i think the Miata will be the last to lose the stick, but the rest of you longing for a stick better act on it. Sticks are disappearing. I don't track my Porsche, for me it's just a fun toy, but it has surprised me with its reliability. Noisy on the highway, but the best highway car I have ever driven. Seems to hang in the center of a lane effortlessly. And the cost for parts for the older Cayman have surprised me with being reasonable. Hmm, I think Porsche intentionally makes durable vehicles; they are makers of high-quality products (with few rare exceptions).
@@458italiap Will defeat the entire purpose of buying this car. A manual swap would require removing the entire hybrid drive. May as well just buy a Civic Si.
@@TheBb6prelude the car was supposed to be a canyon carver in its day imo, they should’ve been rwd. Instead of fwd w all wheel steering to make up for the lack of cornering ability from it being fwd… plus it’d be more expensive and heavy in awd the point is cheap fun car. The benchmark for that is the BRZ. So that’s what I’m basing my comment off of.
@@EnriqueVelett that's funny considering nothing corners faster for the same price as the type R. It's FWD. Just because you can do donuts with a RWD car doesn't mean you're fast. RWD cars can understeer too. RWD doesn't mean fast or faster. Facts prove it.
@@TheBb6prelude yeah but that’s the Type R bro that’s like a 60k car. Tuned and designed specifically for the track. You’d expect it to be a weapon atp. We’re talking base for base here. Its competitors have always been the 86 mx5, Celica. Thats why they developed aws so it could feel like one of these cars while being FWD.
It needs to at least be rear wheel drive ideally all wheel. I still have my 1994 v-tec prelude. The biggest problem with it was that it was front wheel drive. If the rumored Celica is going to be all wheel Honda needs to step up.
Got the 2023 Prius Prime and learned a lot about how they market these new cars. The engine is a 2.0L from the Corolla Hatchback, but with atkinson cams and mapping. The engine and e-motors are mechanically linked, with planetary gears acting as the CVT, not the belt kind. Other than that, there's a lot of other identical parts to the Corolla Hatchback, like the exhaust routing and the chassis, from mid to rear end. I dont think I'll have issues sourcing parts down the line. For the Prelude, this might be why the Civic Coupe is MIA this gen. They would be too similar. I know it's not what most want, but more interest means new aftermarket opportunities that haven't been outlawed (yet). The only hybrid to get their ECU cracked so far is a Honda Insight.
Im thinking curb weight will be around 3,000-3,300 lbs, 2.0T with a mild hybrid and FWD. All that should put it in the ranks with the Elantra N and Mustang Ecoboost(speed wise) 225hp would make sense (250+ would be fun.). 0-60 in around 5 secs.
As a former Prelude owner (3rd gen 88-91) and someone who wished I was short enough to fit a 5th gen, I was disappointed with the design of this new version. Totally subjective of course, but I love the design cues of the 2nd/3rd/5th gen Preludes and did not like the 4th gen appearance at all - it reminded me of an Oldsmobile Alero. This new one looks like it is an update to the 4th gen. The platform being shared with a Civic was a letdown, and the actual powertrain itself also disappointing. The big weakness of the OG Preludes every generation was a poor power-to-weight ratio, and going from a ~200hp motor from 93-01 to this version is extremely underwhelming. Honda had a chance to finally give us the perfect Prelude and instead we get this thing.
I drove an ‘85 Prelude high school and then a ‘93 Prelude Si after I graduated college (VTEC Yo!). I love they’re considering bringing it back! I hope they do, I’d definitely consider driving one if it turns out to be as fun as when drove them in my younger years
Looks great, sparing that funky front light bar that makes it look like they're trying too hard to include a high-tech look update. The e-hybrid means it's going to be pricey and possibly heavy.
Please don't give this the CRZ treatment Honda. If they are going to go hybrid/manual then the performance needs to either match or exceed the Civic Si to really get some traction. A base and performance variant with a bump in powertrain outputs by like 30-40hp would be nice. Gotta be at least faster or comparable to the new Toyota Pruis or it's a flop.
I couldn't agree more. I can do with no manual, if they give it more power than a Civic Si, but less than a Civic Type-R (or more than a Type-R, imagine!)
@@RezBoaDawg The current civic hybrid is already faster in a straight line than the Si. If the prelude gets the handling bits from the type R (suspension, brembos) it will just be straight up faster.
I had a gen 4 and 5 Prelude. Most fun cars I've had, including a Cayman S. I just don't see what I had in the design study. In fact, all i see is its former competition with 90s Eclipse and Celica queues. Where's the long hood and notchback? The thumbnail gets it right, but not what Honda 's giving us, apparently.
Im.just surprised they Actually making it a coupe!!! Finally!!! ❤ I know... Suvs are in demand.. blah blah blah.. but it's nice to have something different. They "should" sell pretty well. Especially if the price is fair. That makes me happy. 😢 a tear jerker.
One of the best looking cars, but a rumored 200bhp is too low. Getting a BMW Supra to replace my GR Yaris, but I would have considered this if it had at least 300 - 350.
Honda lately has been known to be flopping on almost all their vehicles compared to Toyota. Please give us a 2.0 or 2.4 non hybrid version with a turbo. C'mon Honda get at least one more right!!
Looks nothing like a prelude. A prelude needs to be flat & wide with a long front end. The tlx if it was a coupe would come close but the current rendering looks like a fucking civic.
How could Honda make a hot car like the Civic Type R manual-understanding the driver/car connection- and not apply that concept to the Prelude. Being a previous owner of a manual Prelude, I find a new automatic only prelude very underwhelming. Missing a great opportunity, Honda! Please dont stop greatness at the Civic Type R.
I saw the blue on the front grill and knew it was going to be silly hybrid stuff. Its a cheap easy way to get instant torque but this things is probably going to be heavy....
All of this will depend if Honda gets this right. You need more than 200hp but not Type R power and you need to show off something people haven’t seen. IE would be using the electric e-cvt to individually control the front wheels making another SH model. The reality of a manual transmission though I think is a pipe dream. No reason for them not to bring it to the US either since we have no 2 door Hondas anymore since the reason why the discontinued it in the first place was you a had a 2 door accord at the time. Car is very high on my list if done right, if not I’m happy with my Type R.
Its a nice car but to be blunt and honest.... From my thoughts..... These days Coupe sales have been really down , and for those people who want a performance car, they can go for a performance sedan, station wagon, SUV and a pickup truck. Even some hot-hatchback like the mercedes A45s amg and golf R offer more cargo space. So ya automakers may still make coupe but the sales numbers may not be as good as Sedans, SUVs and pickup. If anyone has their own thoughts, pls fell free to let me know😅
@@HaiRune Yes, but the Celica was always much closer in size to the Corolla than Camry. The last 2 generations of Celica were effectively Corolla coupes with the Camry engine.
More than 220-250hp for ~$35k would be a hit. 300hp for $40k in a Type R/S. It will almost certainly come to America. Hell, it will probably be built in Ohio. Honda has emptied the Ohio factories moving almost everything to Indiana, gotta build something there.
They better come with a manual transamission and a TYPE R version will be greatly appreciate by the car enthusiasts. But automatic only, they can keep this as a concept, no one will buy it.
As a former prelude owner and enthusiast (5th gen) I can say that we all thought the prelude should have been rwd. That’s why the S2000 was made. It was basically a rwd prelude. If they make this one fwd, they will have definitely missed the mark.
You guys are all lying to yourself, if you believe this cat will come out at a sub 40k msrp. Every single fun/reboot/ enthusiasts car has hit the market, and instantly alienated itself from its primary potential buyers. Why?? Because the msrp has place it out of reach, from the actual masses that are excited for them. This new prelude will do the same. If you guys miss fun cars... go out and buy the old school models. The ones that truly captured the essence of fun and affordability. Not these new rebrands, with goofy powertrains. Just my .02
Affordable price? When pigs fly! Thirty five k would be a low ball today. Somewhere in the Fourties’ is probable. Forget bargain anything. Ten year car payments with a two year 24,000 mile warranty. Honda’s better idea is for car repair bonanza. Remember Honda reliability Has fallen . It is now rated below BMW. They cheapened the cars a lot since he last Prelude
The 1991 was my favorite ....I won't be buying a new one cause the tack screen covering the dash .....just waiting for this trend to end so I can buy another car.
I owned a new 1988 Honda prelude si and a red 1993 si with 4ws I had a lot of fun them . The new 2025 Honda prelude looks nothing like a Honda prelude as a matter of fact, the front end looks like I Toyota, unfortunately the new prelude, which is nothing special and basic probably won’t last long. Just my opinion.
This Car Will Surely Be A$$, 1000% guarantee this vehicle will lack due to not being in Manuel / it being electric. Not to mention it’ll cost twice or double as it should with crappy hp.
This car will be a commercial failure. It doesn't appeal the the sports car purists, who want a manual, high-reving, light-weight, RWD coupe. It doesn't even appeal to non-purists who just want a "fast" car. It also doesn't appeal to practical commuters, who want 4 seats and storage.
@@TheBb6prelude everyone has their own opinion, you like the odd one out of the group, and i like the ones that look like they came from a previous generation🤷🏾♂️
No manual and less than 200 hp? No thank you, we don't need a repeat disappointment with the CR-Z. Also, you are so real for wanting even a Ford Probe! What an underrated car. The MX-6 and Probe were so cool and overshadowed.
mmmmm it will be slowwwww, or you need to pay $48K for a fwd R model that is way to $$$$$$ , all these car makers need make cars normal people can buy and not have 7 year car payment
Not to correct you twice; The prelude’s replacement was the S2000 from 2004 to 2011 And they have a massive following still today. Secondly, Honda revived the Integra name and they’ve been selling like hotcakes, even I have one haha. They gave the integra the manual option as well, which people love for a nostalgic throwback! And all you people who are gonna argue that the integra today isn’t what it was; let me stop you there and tell you it pretty much is! The most power you could get from a 90s integra was 190hp from a naturally aspirated 2.0L The base integras were exactly what today’s one is, a normal sporty economy alternative to the civic! So don’t get your hopes up too high thinking Honda is gonna pump a lot of horsepower into the brand new prelude either…. It never had that much to begin with back then….
Let me search that lol one sec Edit: sorry you were right about 1.8 Litre yes Horsepower we’re both wrong. 195 hp and 190 lb feet torque For the type R
Hey you still had the power wrong don’t act so smug 😂 My point originally still stands, he was wrong when he said nothing replaced the Prelude originally. It was in fact the S2000 in 2004 because Honda wanted to focus on a more direct sports car.
@RetroKingOG I'm being smug because u go around talking shit when in reality u don't know shit about these cars. Getting the horsepower wrong is one thing. But if you really knew about Hondas u would know the type r is a b series and u would know that it was never a 2 liter. Plus u would know dam well that it didn't make that much torque.
Mehhh!, Honda will most likely price that thing over $50K.when Honda issues a car that will have many fans, like the S2000 and the Civic Type R, they will price the thing too expensive for what it is.......
I’m waiting till after the prelude to see what Honda pulls out its brain after that..if there is a chance at the next s2k only cause I forsure know that will be more performance based then the prelude and if the prelude don’t come with a manual hybrid or not it’s going to flop
Honda needs to bring back their IMA system and KEEP the 6-speed manual. That way, you have the fuel economy and boost of the hybrid system while being true to the roots prelude that's legitimately fun to drive. Otherwise, it feels like just a civic rebadge. Win win for everyone. For the love of GOD, don't make it an EV.
They desperately need to fix the design. It looks WAAAY too much like a Prius. Like I literally thought this video was about a Prius until I read the title.
It’s basically the current civic hybrid but with 2 less doors. So it’s essentially far less practical than the current sedan and hatchback hybrid, at nearly the same price and probably worse for resale. I’m getting the hatch hybrid. I think the Prelude going to flop so hard, like sitting on lots for months flop. It doesn’t make sense when they are just throwing the 2.0 hybrid engine in it. It’s going to be probably around the same numbers as the outgoing civics, no one is gonna buy it. A 2 door FWD hybrid with 0-60 around 6 seconds. No one will buy it. Remember this comment guys. No one asked for this car. NO ONE!!!!
@@f1jones544 The Civic 2 door sold horribly. The prelude will be worse! If you really want one just wait it out, these things will depreciate like crazy. If Americans are gonna be asked to spend 35k on a car it has to be practical and usable daily. The days of the weekend car are over. They made cars too expensive.
