Not only is this instructional, this is very nurturing and even nostalgic. Some of the fondest memories I have are of me shooting with my father. It's days like this that are remembered and passed down to our children's kids. Good on you.
I just ordered one of these for my 6 year old. He's a lefty and I was looking for the southpaw model but after watching your son do just fine I settled on the standard version. Thanks for the video.
Excellent video! Great to see so many wonderful aspects of spending time with your child teaching and learning about firearms. Importantly, Dad was primarily mindful about the child’s comfort and ease of use! This is paramount when trying to encourage firearms safety and skill. No doubt Dad’s approach will engender respect for him as a parent and in the use of firearms! I wish you both many, many years of enjoyment together! Bravo, Dad! Kudos to you, Sir!
Got my little guy a Crickett rifle. They've got a bunch of choices. He hated pulling the plunger back, so we upgraded to a mag-fed bolt gun. So much fun to watch them plink stuff.
I am just a year behind you but I was thinking the same thing. As a light weight knock about I think it has potential. If the length of pull is a problem a slip on butt pad should do the trick.
I bought the rascal for my son on his 5th birthday. Awesome starter rifle and I love that it also has mounts for a scope (he'll be getting that for his 7th birthday).
Awesome stuff Ian! I have fond memories of my father teaching me on a single shot .22 caliber rifle, making me rethink my purchase of a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 for my son and his first rifle.
I remember shooting .22s with my grandfather as a kid. :) As far as a 1st rifle, it is hard to beat a single shot. My suggestion, as your son gets used to the rifle, load 1 round at a time until he masters trigger control. It keeps everyone safer too :)
Just picked up one , with wood stock, for my 7 grandsons . also have a single shot COOEY CANUCK , about 90 - 100 years old. Good things just never go out of style. Good show insisting on safety glasses !
Excellent work teaching shooting fundamentals. My oldest knows it well, and the youngest is just turning old enough to get into it. So far as the grouping, it's probably an ammo issue. Rimfires have a specific taste, and I bet if you find an ammo that the rifle likes, I bet those groups cut at least in half. My CZ 455 match rifle likes SK Match 22lr ammo, which runs about 1/2 moa, vs an ammo it does not like will run 1.5-2 MOA. Even the Lapua midas didn't do all that well compared to the SK (thank the lord..$$$). One of the guys I shoot matches with, the lucky Sunnuva gun, his match rifle like BLAZER.... yes, you read that right. Shoots just under 1/2" with freaking Blazer ammo..... Anyway, good video, cheers!
I bought one for myself Friday, handy little rifle I can shoot in the backyard with primer only rounds, soUnd like an air gun with those. I and going to try and modiFy it into a takedown that I can put in the backpaack
Any update on wherher optics fixed the accuracy? On the verge of purchasing one for my daughter and just curious. Thanks for the vid. The "happy kid doing it all by himself" is a good way of selling my kid on the idea that she can do it too and it will be fun. A+ 🇺🇸
I’m 12 now but when I was 9 or 10 I got one in woodgrain i still use it but now i have a shotgun to hunt with, I have a scope and a leather strap on mine
Thinking about buying one for my girls. They shoot my Savage FV-SR and they love it but it is a bit heavy for the 8 year old. I think this would be perfect for them.
Ian, an informative video. My grandson is left handed and I've been bouncing back and forth between a left-hand, which have limited full size options when he grows older, or right-hand, more options and he'll have to develop muscle memory and technique of operating a right-hand rifle. In hindsight, would you stick with the right or go with left. Your son is operating the right just fine.
Kit Badger Slightly different crowd but im sure the masses can make the shift! Just do the tactical world a favor and never promote Tapco/promag/keltec garbage like certain other youtubers who shall remain unnamed 😂😂😂
@Catcher of thicc minnows Yes. But in my big, stupid looking eyes, teaching them with magazine fed will make the transition easier and quicker. But that's just me. I'm an asshole. I don't even have kids. I guess to start off a single shot will be fine. I would go straight to a mag fed rifle because I'm a huge, lazy jackass. I only say that about myself because I'm a freakin' loser ass sissy man. I try to act all tough round people. I'm just apiece of shit. I love pizza.
Hey Kit, awesome video! Question: my son is 6 and fairly small (about 3'9") and hasn't really handled any firearm. Would you say this savage would be too much gun for him? I've been going back and forth between an airsoft rifle, a bb gun, and a 22lr like this one and the keystone crickett. Thanks in advance!
@@KitBadger hey brother, so I took my 6yo son with me to his first range trip to let him try out his rascal and he basically told me in his own way that he wasn't ready so I didn't try to force it. I might just start him with a bb gun and maybe in a couple more years he'll be ready for his savage. In any case, thanks again for your advice!
Despite being a short rifle for youth I bet you this would be a good survival 22 rifle? If you put a small scope or optic on it. So you wanted a rifle for survival to bury with a cach... In some 22 ammo. This rifle could easily be used by a adult to take small game.
They do actually make a lefty version, but just in the wood stock. Which is about a extra half pound. And, while more and more manufactures are making left handed rifles, it is still a right handed world. :) Thanks Matt!
Or you could get him the correct version for a south paw. Considering bolt actions, shot guns, and AR-15 can be had in left handed versions by multiple companies. Hell, Bula has even started making a LH M1A
Naaa bro his accuracy is about as good as your's was with that cz with the shit ammo lol. J/k What ammo are you running? I've noticed getting my gf into 22's the CCI minimags brand tends to be the most accurate. The cci stingers are a hot lil round super fast. I think this is cool as hell. When I was 8 my dad let me shoot his .22lr I think it was a marlin the woodstock with the rounds you load under the barrel. I feel like 8 is the universal country boy start shooting age lol.
Whelp...I'm starting my country girl at 7 and that's only after my wife gave her blessing finding out my buddy started all his kids at 5! All kids are different though. Keep it fun like a game (with serious rules) and he will love it forever. Don't be an accuracy nazi at first, just keep it fun, once he gets the hang of it and is having fun, hopefully he will drive himself on accuracy. Never forget even at these ages, kids learn by playing!!!
Hes left handed?. They sell left handed versions of that gun. Although this video is old. Lol so might be a little late for that. Not many stuff for left handed people.
