Just got back from a trip to Costa Rica. I used a lot of these techniques. Unfortunately I have returned to my land locked home. Not sure when I will see the ocean again and be able to practice. These videos are at time torture to watch and at the same time fill a deep need to be out in the water. Keep 'em coming!

As both a smooth jazz aficionado and former shortboard rider who's progressed to an 8' Log, this video was perfect. Thankfully, I learned the importance of torso-initiated turns from years of snowboarding. With that said, the pointer on rear foot placement in relation to the fin was pure gold! Haven't moved into the realm of noseriding as of yet, but your commentary on that seems super helpful, as well. By the way, your homage to Shawshank Redemption still ranks in my eyes as one of the greatest ever RU-vid videos.

this was so so helpful! I had knee surgery earlier this year and couldn't surf, and it's been fun getting back into your videos now that I'm allowed back into the water. Also want to say that I'm so impressed with the editing and production value in your videos!! I definitely notice the change between when I was watching your videos last year pre-surgery and your more recent videos now!! Keep it up, your channel is awesome :)

What’s up man! I’ve been surfing for almost a year now, but it’s only from September that I’ve taken it seriously after fortunately getting a 9’6 from a friend. I have to say getting to know this sport and seeing my progress is very very satisfying and fun. Though I’ll never abandon the longboard, here in Italy is very rare to have spots like those in the video with very long waves since a good wave here is like max 10/15 seconds of riding, so I’m finding it better to slowly progress into a smaller board (bought a used 7’6 but I think I could easily ride a better 7’). Nevertheless, I’ve watched quite a few videos to tell you that you’re really good at this, and I’m not just talking about your surfing skills, but the way you explain things and the tips you give are actually super useful. Thank you for sharing these videos and helping me and many more people learn the basics and progressing because of them, you really have making a difference. Much love from Italy, hope to one day catch a few waves with you and noseride our way through!❤️🤙

thanks so much!! Sorry for the late response! Honestly, our rides are rarely longer than 10 seconds as well. So if you're longboarding, you get enough time for maybe one noseride and a quick turn haha! My wife was just in Italy and wants to take me next time haha! So maybe i'll get to surf over there

It's the same with skimboarding. I've been trying to point with 1 hand and drop the hand with the other to force the turn. I should try that on a longboard. Even on a skimboard, I'm so far from the back.

you know what really helps most of all, is surfing around REALLY good surfers. i moved to Oahu from Oregon and the time span that i learned how to surf with style was soo short. but ofc that can't happen for everyone. also give turning a shot without really(thats right without!) using your shoulders. but thats for if you are don't want to rip on your longboard(i personally do not want that style) makes your turns flowy and really good looking

It’s pretty interesting to me that I have a home in OC and I watch content from a surfer on the east coast and 2 in Australia. Cracks me up actually. I’m guessing it’s due to amount of people who surf here and them not wanting to give away there local break or deal with the consequences of overcrowding an already overcrowded break. The locals would shame them no doubt. I saw that you will be in the OC for a couple days. Three days will be a whirlwind. The guys that Ben will be surfing with will tell you guys where to check out, but my guess is that you already have a good idea. Safe travels and be prepared to save for another trip, because you’re in for a treat.

Wow this gets me excited haha!! Can't wait. I think the main reason people don't do channels in OC is that they just don't do them hehe. You have to be a little nuts, very ambitious, and expect no return to start a youtube channel lol! But I love it

This is a great video and probably the most important you’ve done. I actually think that the route of problems long boarding stems from how instructors teach it. We’ve all learned how to popup ON A SHORT board. Traditional popup will land you smack dab in the middle of the board and you will learn how to surf the rails. A year later you will realize that you need to break bad habits. It’s crazy. Good video.

every 12 year old kid at your local break can perch 5s and 10s all the way down the point in and out of the pocket, but how many of them can really round out a proper hammer of a turn. People get so caught up on trying to look cool on the nose that they forget to have fun and move their board around. Strictly popping up, doing a sort-of bottom turn and then trying to noseride the entire length of the wave, or getting through the noseride section and just kicking out is a disease. Gotta throw some turns and complete the waves for it to really start being fun. Glad you're focused up on the fun stuff!

Good to hear you mention Ben C as you two are my fave long-boarding teachers here on YT. In another vid, you mentioned trying your friend’s 9’ in CA (vs your 9’6” in NJ). So I was wondering if your square tail has only a traditional single fin setup, or have you tried a 2+1 in any of your sessions? Just curious how you feel these factors change one’s turns and rides.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
Oh yea , Ben is the best!! I haven't ridden a 2+1 in a long time and couldn't say what exact differences there are. BUT, they feel extremely different haha. Also, 2+1 setups are found on high performance boards which are much lighter.. so there are more factors then just the fin setup. A single fin traditional log is heavy (which is a good thing) and turning is a different sensation and slightly more 'pivoty'. A High pro 2+1 is more of a sweeping on rail type turn and won't slip like a traditional would on very large waves. Hope that helps
@laurat1129
@laurat1129 Год назад
@@LongboardSessions Just got a 9’4” Solid EZ Street. So not a traditional LB or Log, but I’m curious to see how it is 2+1 vs single. Though I may not be experienced enough yet to tell the difference!

Another great vid on important skills to stay upright on a long board, thank you. I have a question for the community, does the shape of your boards rail and rocker effect the turning of the board? I have some vintage boards (60's) I have restored and late model boards and its my impression the rail and rocker can effect the turning ability. What do you think?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions Год назад
oh yes for sure it does. I don't know the exact science behind rail shape, but a 60/40 will hold better than a 50/50 i believe, however 60/40 are not considered traditional longboard rails. Also, more rocker makes turning and noseride setups easier IMO.

@@LongboardSessions I tried it and my turns are definitely improving, although backhand needs serious work. Mate most decent longboarders I know are competent on all boards - short and mid length. Just my opinion but if you get some more critical waves on other equipment the challenge and skill level required will take you to another level much faster. Learning about compression for example - even on a logger it’s critical. (Plus it’s a lot of fun). What have you got to lose? Cheers

heya Brian, what do you think about the idea of a beginner learning on a longboard for stability, even if they plan to transition to a shorter board later?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 11 месяцев назад
I think it's a fabulous idea! Beginners need to learn on larger boards no matter what. BUT... often people who want to shortboard end up picking boards too small and progress much slower (this is what I did). Of course I eventually became a longboarder in the end anyway lol. I have a question for you if that’s ok. I transitioned from shortboarding to Longboarding like you. It’s transformed my surfing, I think I should always have been a longboarder as I’m bigger than average. My question is, I’ve been going out on large waves and having fun, but so many people seem to think longboards aren’t good for big waves. Apart from being harder to get to the line out I don’t understand why? Waves I’d have been wiping out on my shorty I’m catching for fun now 🤷‍♂️
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 11 месяцев назад
Well when we have big waves over here I go out on my longboard. Many people seem to look at me with jealousy as I'm catching twice the amount of waves as them. Both boards have their plusses and minuses on big waves. But yea the stigma is you sholdn't take a longboard out on big waves. Good thing is we can do whatever we want! haha

Watched a few of these videos past few months. Just watching this guy surf it seems to me that he learned as an older guy and went directly to long boarding. I could be wrong but I don’t think so. The long board should be a progression from a short board. IMO people who go straight to the long board never learn how to surf. Once waves get a bit dicey they quickly get exposed. Can’t handle the challenge or control their surfboards. Can tell in their overall lack of style as well. They need small easy waves. If people get something out of it that’s great but skipping learning how to properly surf a short board and develop those instincts and reactions will absolutely limit your surfing.
