I’ve played solo: Earth; Expeditions; Dune Imperium (with all expansions); Vindication: “The Awakening” Solo adventure. And I loved all of them! Wow. I never imagined solo gaming could be so great! It’s amazing.
My faves so far this year would be Rebuilding Seattle, Ark Nova, Ramen! Ramen!, Next Station London, Dragon Castle, Dorf Romantik, Oranienburger Kanal, and 51st State. Lands of Galzyr is also fun - but I would love a more connected story at times. Honorable mention to Moonrakers (with the App), Dune Imperium, Lost Ruins of Arnak, and Gaia Project. All would be in my top 20!
My current favorite games to play solo (in no particular order) are Obsession, Oak, Keep the Heroes Out, Legacy of Yu, Rococo Deluxe, Cursed!?, and Gates. Fun list! I've only played a few of the ones you mentioned as there's just so many games out there. I also love Cthulhu Death May Die and Everdell, but I think I prefer those with at least one other player.
I couldn't stand Oak. The board's icons were too small to read, and the color scheme was just a variety of greens...everywhere. Plus, there's nothing I didn't see before in a worker placement game like that. SOLD!
My favourite(s), Imperium Classics & Imperium Legends were no where to be seen! Aeons End, Warps Edge and It’s a Wonderful World are all on my want to try wish list.
Having found myself coming out of a very, very long bout of depression after becoming single again, I find I need to start doing things in my spare time, of which I have a lot, so this is very helpful, thank you. No idea where to start but there's quite a few which peaks my interest. Thanks for the list.
I'm sorry if times are rough for you currently - board games and music are my therapy if I have tough times. I'm glad to be able to accompany you a bit. 😊
We still have an active Aeon's End group gathering every other week. Marvel champions and Spirit Island see maybe a little more play but Aeon's End is still amazing.
i got it like a week ago but havent got arround to playing! i saw a couple videos of rhino vs spidey wich ill try myself but it seems its hard for me to learn the card thing! cause ive never played a tcg .. but im looking forward! i ordered the green goblin scenario and cyclops deck
@@jorgedawsonwetto25 that's all I've played so far. Just use the learn to play. It's pretty straight forward. I allowed myself one take back because I didn't realize the mechanic with the bosses boost card at first. Ended up taking awhile to beat rhino, but I plan to play more this week and probably use a netdeck for Spiderman and see the power difference.
@@86Disab cool! yess ill use the guide! and ive watched some videos it doesnt seem thaat hard its just its easier for me the boardgames i think but i do want to learn cause so many pple say its the best solo game! what do u say u want to get for the deck? and one can also use some of the cards the other heroes bring to spice up the spidey deck? the non specific ones?
@@jorgedawsonwetto25 the high cost cards seem okay, but I'm sure there's better options. Webbed up was really good as well as web kick. Web kick felt too good though and the kill was anti climactic.
I've played and enjoyed a number of my games on your list. Some additional games you didn't mention that I've also enjoyed are Under Falling Skies, Doom Machine, Final Girl, and The Red Cathedral. Two newer games that I've enjoyed recently (solo) have been Expeditions and Terraforming Mars: The Dice Game. Nice list!
Thanks for sharing your list! some of my favorite solo games are 1 Ark Nova 2. The Castles of Burgandy 3. Viticulture 4. Lost Ruins of Arnak 5. Distilled 6. Grand Austria Hotel. Definitely going to look into Aeons End and others on your list... thanks again!
Great list! I love the mobile app implementation of Onirim, but the production quality on their physical games is fantastic. A few of my standout solo games this year: Dorfromantik - Tile placement with a campaign. Set your own pace, try and score as high as you can, whilst unlocking and trying to complete missions/sidequests. Oh My Goods - Hand management, reminiscent of Texas Hold'em poker. There's a campaign with the expansions Lonsdale in Revolt and Canyon Brook. Expedition to Newsdale - Builds on Oh My Goods and adds a board as well as a resource bag. Rolling Realms - Dice placement with many different modes. The campaign system involves certain modes with challenges to increase the difficulty.
I usually sleeve my most favorite games, those that are either expensive or hard to get and those that require a lot of shuffling, such as deckbuilding games. I use the matte sleeves by Arcane Tinmen. 🤓
Hello, Thanks for sharing your list I'm trying to stay under 30 games so I tried and played a lot but keep what I like the most and/or what is playing easely after not playing the game for a few months. I love aeon's end and I'm glad you give him justice. But, I have to say that I sell all my collection and that his little space brother "ASTRO knights" take over him! And I have no regrets has it is such à pleasure and with a faster setup! At the moment I have to say that Marvel Champions is taking the crown at home, a big investment (or not if you're not a collector) for such a great solo game! I also love LOTR rings lcg. So all in all if I had to summer up my favorites ones and also mentions fews honorables.. It would look like this : Honorable : Legacy of Yu Guild of merchant explorers Parks (with my solo variant) Resist Under falling skies Heat Isle of cats explore & draw Welcome to the moon Set a Watch And my preferred ones (in no particular order) : Aeon's end / Astro Knights Marvel champions LCG LOTR LCG Sprawpolis Bullet Cascadia Warp's edge Sentinels OfT multiverse (DE) Raiders of Scythia And I probably forgot some others :) Cheers from Belgium And happy playing!
Yeah, this year I have decided to not call these videos like that anymore, even though it leads to less clicks. I really dislike anything that is just remotely click baity. 🤓 I'm quite happy with the way I'm calling them now. ☺️
This was a good list, and I enjoyed the fast pace of it. I definitely agree with you on number one. Aeon's End was one of the two games that got me into the hobby (the other being Sentinels of the Multiverse), and is the one I have the most stuff for. I've got everything! My only issue is that setup can be a pain, with such a completely absurd amount of cards. Randomizing and then searching for all the different market cards in my collection is irritating. It's not my #1 favorite... Final Girl (I've got everything for this one too) came along and took that spot... but it's still absolutely brilliant.
Yeah, Final Girl is a cool design and I get why many people like it - it just wasn't my cup of tea. But Aeon's End will probably always stay high up in my collection. 😁
I keep thinking about Black Angel and Aeon's End. Black Angel looks so complicated, I am always a bit hesitant on that, but I do love Science Fiction themes.
Very good short review of solo games. The new and better solo mode of castles of burgundy only comes with the expensive special edition? Bought Aeons End 2 weeks ago. I love it ! 😊 Have you tried Ark nova or Carnegie in solo mode ?. Brilliant games
Please check out Halls of Hegra, a solo only WW2 based worker placement game. The flow of the different phases is really well designed. The tension rises as the Germans attack and siege your fort. Good planning and anticipation are required not to be overrun. Very thematic and strategic, I gave it a 9/10 instantly. Looking for deep solo immersion and a high difficulty (Not extremely rules heavy, but low survival rate)? Try Nemesis. There's simply no other boardgame like it! Believe me, you will feel the tension, as you desperately try to repair the ship, and find an exit strategy, all while trying to evade the aliens. And finally This War of Mine. All the same arguments as above, but without the aliens. A very confronting and humbling game experience... Never won it, but love it even more.
10:28 If you're interested in adding a progression system to Lands of Galzyr, I made a homebrew rule for that on BGG which fits on a single card that you can store with your character. Essentially, for every 25 Prestige you earn you can choose a perk, which include additional Skill Pips, being able to re-roll dice, carry more Items, and retaining allies and mercenaries easier. It's designed mainly for solo mode to give more of an incentive to earning Prestige and to help compensate for your inability to get help from other players like you might get during a co-operative campaign.
nice games! i also love wingspan! the one i would recomend for just solo is "under falling skies"! i got marvel champions but havent played it yet! but unfallen skies is very easy to learn and fun! also a small roll and write game "longshot" of horse racing! super simple but fun! ill be honest i printed that one 😅
good content though Aeon End is probably at the end of my list. unfortunately cards for deck building are limited and the monsters deck cards lack any thematic art.
I need to try Meadow’s solo more. It’s one I usually play at 2p with just my wife and we love it. Cthulhu Death May Die is probably my favorite solo game right now. Just mindlessly chucking dice at the end of the day can be a nice time. Two others not on your list that I’d recommend: The Bloody Inn, and the Night Cage.
@@SirThecos Aeon’s End is one I’ve been looking at, and I think this review tipped me over into buying it (though it has different forms, and there’s a legacy version, so I’m still dithering). The Artemis Project is a new one to me, and it seems really interesting. Paperback Adventures is one I’ve seen in reviews, but I’ve never actually seen it in real life at the game store. Come to think of it, that might be true to Artemis Project too. I played Onirim on my iPad and honestly didn’t like it, but your review interested me in a couple of the others. I don’t think I’ve seen people talk about the other games, so Stellarion and Castelion were both new to me and I think I might like those.
i played its a wonderful world for the first time this month, and i really really enjoy it. its so simple but so replayable, the solo is challenging imo i feel like im bad at it. my scores range from 17 to 53 on a good game. (symetric, no scenario) idk what average scores for this game are like but hey im having a lot of fun with it. i wish there was 2 more rounds though haha ,but thats the challenge of the game.
Heya, yeah it's a great game. This strategy guide helped me get better scores (base game) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mUhCZtjbNO4.htmlsi=XAnEf_ZhycOJioxJ
Since I become a father I started to play a lot solo so my favourites in no particular order need to do my top 100 first but I enjoyed solo plays of those Spirit Island, Ark nova, Sprawlopolis, Brass Birmingham, Kanban EV, On Mars with expansion, Paladins of the west kingdom, Next station London, Turing Machine, Tekhenu...
Hi Sir Thacos, My list is: Teotihuacan (+expansions) Dewellings of Eledervale Dinosaur Wordl (+expansions) Feudum (+expansions) Arkham LCG (+expansions) Shadowrift (+expansions) Set a Watch (+expansion) Wall of Hadrianus Dune Imperium (+expansions) Sword and Sorcery (+expansions) Hero Realms (+expansions) Mage Knight (+expansions) Shadows of Brimstone (+expansions) Race for the Galaxy (+expansions) Elder Sign (+expansions) The Pursit of Happiness (+expansions) Dice Throne (+adventures expansion) Pathfinder As far as I see from opinions (have not played yet) also good solo experience might be: Darkest Knight Altar Quest Friday 7th Continent The Lord Of The Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth This War of Mine Hostage Negotiator Feast of Odin Nemesis Also suggested games that I do not like playing solo but others do: Scythe Lost Ruins of Arnak Robinson Crusoe Gloomhaven Gloomhaven - Jaws Of The Lion LOTR lcg Tiny Towns Marvel LCG Imperium Classic (+Imperium Legend) Clans of Caledonia
Fit to Print is a game that wasn’t on the list that I’ve enjoyed solo. Also love Everdale, Wingspan, and the Button Shy games. Also, I picked up Galzyr based on last year’s video and have enjoyed every moment of it. I owe you at least one drink for that rec!
Everdell has the worst solo mode I have ever encountered in a boardgame. It plays so differently from the normal game and even on the lowest difficulty is near impossible to beat (havent managed to achieve that yet, after dozens of games). I prefer the unoficial automa from bgg.
My top 10 solo games: 1. Spirit Island 2. Spirit Island with Branch and Claw 3. Spirit Island with Branch and Claw and promo pack 1 4. Spirit Island with Branch and Claw, promo pack 1 and Jagged Earth 5. Spirit Island with Branch and Claw, promo packs 1 and 2, and Jagged Earth 6. All of the above with premium token pack 1 7. All of the above with Nature Incarnate 8. All of the above with a really good insert 9. All of the above with Horizons of Spirit Island 10. All of the above with Premium tokens pack 2
Honestly I was amazed to see Everdell here without the Mistwood expansion. I always thought that the out-of-the-box solo mode was a bit unbalanced and tacked-on. Mistwood spider on the other hand completely fixes that and creates a truly engaging solo experience (while unfortunately requiring an additional purchase, but well worth it IMO).
You're not wrong: The solo mode is definitely not perfect. But I think it does a pretty good job. But yes, I've heard that there are better solo modes for Everdell. I'll have to check those out some time. 👀
I really enjoy everdell and have the complete collection. Never got around to the expansion. Will need to check it out. Just wanted to add everdell on the switch or steam is fun to play multiplayer with AI. If you want a multiplayer solo that's another option
Great list Sir Thecos! Have you tried Mage Knight? That’s my favourite and I read people comparing aspects Dragons of Etchinstone to it, so you might like it
I have! And well...it was quite a rough two-player game. It took us seven (!) hours and we had to keep referencing the rulebook until the very end. I see why people like this game but it was a very rough experience, unfortunately.
@@SirThecos I can empathise, it’s really heavy rules wise and definitely takes a long time to learn! I also wouldn’t ever recommend it multiplayer, only as a solo game due to the potential for analysis paralysis. I would recommend to perhaps give it another try just solo sometime to see if it clicks with you.
I just finished my first campaign of Hoplomachus Victorum and I thought it was amazing. From production, to rulebook, flow of game, it was just right for me. The "samey" concern I feel is overblown and you can control when the game changes and finishes as well.
@@SirThecos the lack of dice mitigation has been partly solved as well - there are some conditions that allow for reroll now. I might have to revise my decision to avoid HV.
if you like Dice Placement it's strange you don't like Circadians first light. My favourite it's still Mage knight or Mage lite when i need to be portable, after that it's probably Hadrians Wall, Aeons End and recently i really liked Skytear Horde
Currently, my favorite solo game is hands down "Voidfall" and I don't see it being pushed off the throne anytime soon. My all time favorite solo game is hard to pin down but I think it would be "Cloudspire". Although it would win only by miniscule advantage. Then there is "Fallen Lands" which will always have a very special place in my heart. It isn't the best solo for me or the most beloved but definitely the most unique one.
If you get bitten by the Marvel Champions bug, I am confident it will break into your top 10 next year 👌🏽 It is my top solo game with over 100 plays 😎 Also really happy to see Paperback Adventures on the list too- it’s incredible!
I gave marvel champions a second chance this last month.. And I already have 50+ games in less than two months... Surely making his path to my top solo of all time. Setup is way better compare to Arkham lcg and solo is as good as the LOTR lcg. I'm Glad I gave him a second chance, but my wallet not so much :D
Currently teaching myself the 2012 reissue version of Thunderbolt Apache Leader. Outside of that, my three go-to solo play titles of the last year are Space Hulk: Death Angel, Sagrada and Tin Helm (which I saw in this video briefly).
I have 8 games out of the 31 you showcased. Our tastes are pretty different. You have a lot of simpler games on the list, so you're not a "heavy" solo gamer it seems. Out of your list, I would classify your playing interests as "light-to-medium weight".
Love your choice, maybe because I have 21 of the games you picked 😊 Btw: Have you heard of Kingsbridge the card game that can be played solo ? I ask because I bought it but it seems there are no playthroughs of it on UT and I would love to watch someone play it. Hem,hem Sir Thecos 😉😉 Kind Regards.
Pretty cool. Maybe a day without electronics would be good. I think ill grab some of the good ones. For wingspan i can't find that one with the peacock. Found the one with the bird with brown tail. the rest expansion. any of those worth getting and can be played separately. I wouldn't of bought a game with a bird on it. maybe mid evil, space stuff. Any more that don't have a lot of pieces? afrade of loosing pieces. What one's get extra stuff you gotta buy? I got a deck of cards at the dolor store. IDK. I like TCG. It's just to expensive. War hammer is out of my league of expensiveness.
For Wingspan, you just need either the base game box (the large blue one) or Wingspan Asia (the pink one) for up to two players only. All the other boxes are just expansions and only needed if you like the game enough. And yes, a deck of cards is always a good thing to have! 😊
@@SirThecos I looked up singles player board games. For the times I feel like not turning on the electrics and alone. So can I add to it? What one adds to it and still single player... I got some multiplayer board games already.
I ended up getting aeons end for now. Warps end is on the way. Maybe ill pick something else up. are the expansion worth it? Ill see what satisfaction i get from these. Usually just play solitaire with a deck of cards from the dolor store. I don't want to do the wizards of the coast trading cards again. It's to costly. I can only see them disappear instead of having a good game. I can do pick one of these up for $50. and maybe buy a car. instead. I usually do the electronics more thou. Omish night is always ok. I can probably make these on my own with all the cardboard i find and markers. I am lazy and already got gift money.
Got aeon's end. A new age Looks like a lot. Doesn't come a game board? A gameboard with instructions and stuff on it would be nice. Maybe holders for the cards. Can grab some stuff. maybe make some holders. Hope I figure it out. In the weekend.
yes, automa it s very good, and easy,it s a deck. the game it s compleate with rise of ix,and immortality,i think they are not expanson but the copmlete game.and me too i play in solo.@@jorgedawsonwetto25
