I've completed the 30 Day Minimalism Game again! I absolutely love this challenge, and if you haven't done it, you should give it a try immediately. This is the fourth time now that I've completed the challenge, and I think I could easily do it again. If I can do it four times, anyone can do it once!

Thank you for your words at the end of this video. You gave me the motivation to get rid of a project I started over 10 years ago. I really wanted to learn to knit but found it very frustrating. I had an unfinished scarf just sitting here for 10 years thinking I would one day finish it. Even though I don’t remember how to knit or even like the color of the yarn. Today I finally unraveled it and I’m donating the yarn! I’m free! ❤️

This is my favorite minimalism game video. I’ve watched it a few times over the years. I just love how you bought that easel and the canvas and admitted to us that you didn’t use it and donated it to a friend. You didn’t put yourself down with the money you spent or call yourself impulsive, nothing negative that I would have done to myself. Thank you.
5 лет назад
I loved your summary at the end. The unfinished project clutter is normally filled with bitterness, regret and a punch to the self esteem of the overachiever. I remember when I realised that I really didn't care about becoming a professional makeup artist, because it didn't fulfill me as a person. I let go of so much money, which it hurt, but keeping that would have put a burden on me that wouldn't have let me move forward.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 5 лет назад
Congratulations on letting such weighty things go! ...At first, I typed "important things" and then backspaced because they're not actually important things at that point, but they do carry a lot of, well, weight, and letting that go can be so freeing! I hope you've found something that is actually fulfilling to take its place! Even if you haven't yet, you're now free to find it!

We used to have a guest room also that became a dumping ground for anything we weren't using. When we moved to our current house a year ago, we decided to get rid of the concept of a "guest room" altogether. We realized that we have stay over guests very rarely, maybe once or twice a year if that, and so it didn't make sense to dedicate a whole room for guests that never came!

Your cat has such a dry humour it creases me. I started this challenge last Saturday and advanced to 6 days on day one ! It's always better to be ahead than playing catch up. It is the best way I have found to look at all my stuff and deal with it. There are things I got rid of and wondered why I kept them so long. Old pens, keys rings, folders etc. I take pics of each day then get the stuff down to charity, recycling bin etc as soon as possible to stop me changing my mind. One day I was running late and pulled a top out of the bag to wear to work to save the indecision. I swiftly washed after and once dried it went strange back to the bag. But just to say keep going and thank you for the motivation !

I appreciate this video. We've been in our house nearly 29 years and have accumulated way more stuff than you would even think. If I was good at decluttering, I wouldn't be in this mess, so every strategy that I can adopt will help a lot. There's so much stuff around here that a 30 day minimalism game will be a good way to get me into the groove!

Thank you! Re: fantasy self/old self items: the idea can take a while to sink in, but something I've been asking myself recently is whether or not my day-to-day life would actually be affected by getting rid of a particular thing. It yes, it can stay. If no... So many of the fantasy self items I've gotten rid of other the years have definitely been things I didn't use and whose absence would not affect me in any meaningful way, so off they go. Anyway, I hope that helps. Merry Christmas to you as well!

Wooooow! You really did a great job! Actually, I would not have imagined that you still had so many items to declutter. I consider my home clutter free, but I always find something to get rid of here and there lol. These past few weeks I have been decluttering furniture for two reasons: 1) I do not need so much storage space anymore and 2) I found better pieces of furniture (smaller and/or more functional, so we are having a renovation here...we are selling the old ones). I also care about aesthetics. Fortunately my husband has always been supportive. He is happy with all our progress over the past three years. Happy Holidays and greetings from Brazil (hot summer here)!

It's amazing what you can find tucked into drawers or inside closets! It feels so nice to have those spaces cleared. Oh man, doesn't it feel great when you get rid of something and then you realize that not having that one thing means not needing to own other, peripheral things? I absolutely love your videos!!You are such an inspiration to me. I love your voice, your down to earth manner and I get so inspired when you declutter. Isn’t it just amazing how we can feel so finished decluttering after a 30 day minimalism game and then find so much more stuff to declutter for the next game as well. A question: I have stuff that I keep for when my grandkids come over and I also keep a fair amount of stuff for Christmas decor (even though I decluttered this year) and family back yard summer picnics. I always want to make family times so enjoyable for everyone but it involves keeping way too much stuff. It’s got me stuck a little on my decluttering process. Does anyone have ideas for a different way I could be thinking about this? Have an amazing Christmas 🎄 and thanks so much for sharing your journey.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 5 лет назад
Thank you so much! You're absolutely right. Each time I've done the challenge, I think I can't possibly get rid of more, and then the bar of what is "necessary" moves and I find more stuff I'm not using or that is no longer important. Re: keeping stuff for when the grandkids visit: When I was a kid visiting my grandparents, I loved playing around with my grandmother's stuff and admiring her antiques or looking at her photo collections. She was kind of a packrat (still is, but not as bad), so there was a lot to explore. You don't have to keep stuff you don't want, but it might be nice for your grandkids to be able to get to know you and learn about you through the things you choose to keep rather than distracting them with toys (I assume you mean that you keep toys for the grandkids). I also spent a lot of time outside in her garden. Re: Christmas: I recently posted a video on my Christmas decor, but a tip I failed to include is to decorate using only your favorite things first. Then, when the box is half empty because you've already pulled out your favorite things, take a look back in the box and see what's left. That might help highlight things you could let go of. Re: backyard picnics: I'm not sure what kind of stuff you keep for these occasions, so I'm not sure what to suggest. One idea is to use your everyday dinnerware if you don't already and otherwise look around your house for existing things that could also be used outside, instead of having separate picnic-time-only items. I hope some of this and happy holidays to you too!

We've been declutting for almost 6 months we did our loft before Xmas and wow it was hard one books clothes toys everything you can think of we raised money for 3 charitys and sent all the cuddly toys to the hospice for them to sell I'm so glad we started this because we had so much stuff I've done my bedding closet and even got rid of 3 sleeping bags my girls used to use when they were small for sleep overs. We love it when we get letters from the charitys when they sell our stuff to let us know how much money theve raised all because of my stuff I know longer needed. We are still at it I've just got rid of a bag of Xmas decorations we don't want. Took them to the cancer shop with me having breast cancer we do like to give something back by raising money for them. Thanks! I definitely think this is a great "maintenance" technique. That said, now that I've been doing this for a while, I've become much more careful about things I bring into my home, which is almost nothing at this point. My husband brought the cat back from the vet the other day and placed the receipt on the dining table. As always a great video! It’s amazing how much stuff we humans can accumulate. Most importantly how quickly! My boyfriend and I just recently went through our books and declutteres more than 60. There are more which will probably have to go in half a year or so, but for now I am still hoping to read them.

The vast vast majority of those things were tucked away in drawers or cabinets or closets, so my house doesn't look different from the house tour I filmed recently-ish (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-42wEDiWdMrA.html), except there's now a tree in the middle of my living room. I have struggled with letting go of crafting supplies and such, but it is such a relief when I take the plunge and let go. I hope that renewed sense of creativity doesn't result in, well, more stuff that doesn't get finished, but the more you get to know yourself the less likely that is to happen. At least that's what I hope will happen the next time I get a bright idea. I've told several friends they are to remind me of these canvases the next time I feel crafty... Anyway, it definitely is a load off to let those things go! Happy holidays to you as well!

I have done all my Christmas and birthday present wrapping this year without having to buy any more and that has pleased me. That gift wrap was covered in tacos. Not like "we spilled a taco on it and it's ruined" but the actual print of the paper was...tacos. I think I could probably do it once more, and maybe once a year after that for maintenance (that said, I've become really good at not shopping and keeping stuff out of our home, so maybe I won't need a lot of maintenance), but I too am getting close to not being able to do this much more without dipping into things we regularly use. If you're struggling, make sure you're looking absolutely EVERYWHERE and decluttering things like paperwork and photos. I was hoping you'd do another of these! Yay!!! But I was wondering what happened with the Disney pin lanyard. My biggest problem now is getting the stuff out of the house. Clothes are not the problem but sentimental items are. I have sold, donated, and trashed, basically in that order but I have a collection of animal figurines that I want to dispose of and I really don't want to dump those in the garbage because I can't find a home for them. On the other hand, I don't want to keep them anymore either. This is the obstacle I face regularly so I have kind of hit a deadend with my decluttering. I want to try the challenge but wonder if I'll end up giving up because of not being able to find new homes for the stuff that is too good to be trashed yet probably desired by only a very select few.
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 5 лет назад
I totally understand. I've held on to lots of things over the years, not because I wanted to keep them but because I didn't know how to dispose of them. Giving things away to new homes can definitely help, especially with sentimental items, but, as you are experiencing, it's not always easy or possible to do. Could you not donate them to a thrift store? You may not get the satisfaction of knowing that they went to a new home immediately, but at least it's kind of nebulous and open ended--you can hope that they will eventually go to a new home. Another thing to consider is that these items are literally just a burden to you right now. You don't want them, but you're also captive to them. At the end of the day, they're just things. They're not adding value to your life; they're just a point of stress. Why willingly keep those things around? Perhaps you could look around on online at people selling similar figurines to help drive home the point to you that they may not be worth much monetarily. Sorry for the tough love, but, if you bite the bullet and get rid of these, it could be a turning point for you so you can learn to let other things go. Hope this helps and happy new year!
@Chariots1981
@Chariots1981 5 лет назад
@@VestedInterests Thanks for your helpful response... and a happy new year to you, too! I need the tough love because I've felt myself slipping on that point. If I talk to my non-minimalist friends, they would just laugh and tell me "What's the problem? Just keep them!" I have to consider to what extent these things are a burden or source of stress to me. Many of them are small items and don't take lots of room but just knowing that they are stuck in a storage box and I am not making use of them makes me feel sad for the things (oddly enough). I know they are not worth much so I need to convince myself to just wrap them up and trash them... so they won't be lurking in the back of my mind (and closet) anymore. I wish it were easier to remove the emotional element from some of the things I own....

I agree, knowing the purpose / function of each space is very valuable. It helps you easily decide what belongs / doesn't belong in each space, and it makes decluttering so much easier mentally. Goals - also foundational work before minimalism! Not only why are you wanting to be more minimalist, but what are your goals over the next 5 - 10 years? If you have stuff that doesn't fit into those life goals, why not let it go to someone who (for example) would love to learn the violin? Also, I have to say one of the saddest posts I ever saw when I was a member of a minimalism group on FB was "OK, now I've decluttered my whole house and I'm bored. What am I supposed to do next?" I for one don't have that problem :-)
@VestedInterests
@VestedInterests 5 лет назад
Absolutely--all great points! The violin has now gone to a new student who is very excited to have it, and I'm thrilled that it has found a good home. If you haven't seen my video on goals, you might enjoy it. I think everyone's "end game" is very different, but I really enjoy the calm and focus that it has brought me. I can now spend my time on things that are important to me instead of looking back and wondering where the time went!
