I read an article that said Winchester originally loaded this round with a 510gr solid @2150fps with 5,670FT/LBS of muzzle energy and the compressed gunpowder would clump together under certain conditions which lead to mr Lott getting mauled by a cape buffalo because his 458win ammo malfunctioned and he created the 458 Lott because of it, now because of modren gun powder and better ammo technology the 458 win mag is a monster with no ammo clumping problems anymore.
My understanding was the 458 had to have the same energy as the 416 Rigby. When you load the Rigby to the same pressure levels as the 458 you can push a 400 grain bullet to 2600fps.
A fella took a .458 Win Mag to Africa after Cape Buffalo. While recovering in the hospital, he mused about a more powerful cartridge. His name was Jack Lott.
Sir, I am from India can you please share some idea which rifle is better winchester model 70 375 H&H magnum or westly richard's 375 magnum... Thank you
Well, at the time, Winchester was lying. It didn't perform as well as the box said. They had serious problems with powder clumpin lack of velocity. At the time it just didn't live up to the hype.Cause if it had the 458 Lott would never have been produced.
