Join me while we go over what makes a great cymbal crash. When playing percussion in an orchestra, the cymbal player plays a role that is more expressive than almost any other percussion instruments.
This video is great for any budding orchestral percussionist or classical music enthusiast who wants to explore more about percussion instruments.
This video is a bit longer than my other ones, and my intention was to (subtly) split the video into 2 halves. The first half should provide someone who is interested in a general overview of the cymbals with enough information to “get it”. The second half provides a few specific musical examples for those who want to dig in further or are a budding percussionist themselves. I opted for this form of presentation, rather than creating a “Part 1 & 2”, so that I would have all of the information about cymbals in one place. My goal was to make the entire (16 minute) video face-paced enough that it would be of interest to a wide variety of experience levels; including non-musicians.
This is my second video exploring the world of orchestral percussion. After making my first about the triangle, the logical next step was cymbals; which are my favorite percussion instruments. There are many fine details that go into playing a great cymbal crash, and it takes a life time for a percussionist to master them. Focusing on 4 of these details will hopefully help anyone understand what goes into making a great sound out of hitting 2 metal plates together.
Thanks for checking out my videos and if you have any comments or questions I would be very glad to hear them! If you liked this video I would also greatly appreciate it if you liked, commented, and/or subscribed to this video and my channel on RU-vid. Stay tuned for some more videos coming your way which will hopefully be released in the next few weeks.

1:11 Can you name all of the pieces in that montage?! (.... can you name all of the players too?? I can name maybe about half of them...)

Tchaikovsky 4, Pictures at an Exhibition, 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky 4 again, Tchaikovsky 6, Strauss Ein Heldenleben (I think), Mahler 5, No clue, Brahms Variations on a theme by Haydn, Bruckner 7, Strauss Alpine Symphony. So, no, I cannot, in fact, name all of the pieces.

I never thought about getting lessons for percussion accessories but man I learned so much things! I've been playing in orchetra for more than 10 years and there are many little things that I haven't been taught, like holding the cymbals right, doing a triangle roll, playing the wood sticks right.. so thank you for all that.

Thinking about the examples you provided and how you varied offset, angle and speed in each instance, what size of cymbal and style of playing would you recommend for marches played in a concert band context (e.g. Sousa, von Suppe)? Think lots of quarter note / eighth note passages that are written forte+.
