If you've been learning Mandarin Chinese for a while, you might have come across this common scenario where a native speaker tries to explain a Chinese character using some squiggles on their hand which make no sense visually but also using words you've perhaps never heard.
A common way to explain Chinese characters is to use the names of the strokes to further clarify which one you mean, so for example, the character for 王
could be explained by saying "The one with 3 horizontal strokes and one vertical stroke.
There are only a handful of Chinese calligraphy strokes (and many more combinations) so knowing these core ones will definitely help you out.

Thanks. Please also make video on Stroke Order. Like: 1. From left to right. 人 2. From top to bottom. 三 3. Horizontal before vertical。 十 4. From outside to inside. 月 5. Middle before two sides. 小 6. Inside before closing. 回 etc

I love Skritter, but I also strongly recommend learning to write characters using a good springy Chinese brush and appropriate ink. There is something magical about the feel of using a brush, along with the beauty of the brushstrokes. And it links you with Chinese traditional culture.

Excellent, Fiona. I've been watching/studying your videos for a while, when you were, uh, elsewhere... I can recognize a few common characters, but am literally at the doorstep of beginning to write them. I have books, but this helps immensely.
