My problem is the sprawl. The city builds horizontally instead of vertically. Downtown needs dense housing to truly revitalize it.

Not a con but if you don’t speak Spanish - learn it. You need both languages regularly.

Nah, you don't NEED to speak both regularly. I've lived here for about 18 years now, and never absolutely needed to learn Spanish, it can just help in certain situations.

I'm a Chinese student who is about to study at UTEP and have never studied Spanish before, which sounds a bit difficult for me.😭

@@zhangyan-id9hk you’ll be fine speaking English. Spanish is very prominent in the area and needed for many jobs. You will start picking it up once you’re there. No worries.

Imo, a big con is in poor city planning and roadway maintenance. Too many streets are in terrible condition in older parts of the city, and the constant construction being done all over never seems to fix the most basic of roadway issues and traffic congestion (if you know about Montwood not connecting to itself in the East side after passing 375, you know exactly the problem, and that's just one symptom of the disease itself).

Oh buddy, you forgot one major one! I haven’t even read the comment section yet to see if anyone else has mentioned this, but if you live on the west side, it’s almost impossible to navigate the traffic. I 10 is undergoing major construction in that area, so it is near about impossible to get anywhere, unless you really know your way around. my suggestion, look at maps, and really consider the area of El Paso you want to live before you move here.

We are considering moving to El Paso. So far we see far more plusses than minuses. Concerned that many neighborhoods DO NOT have streetlights in spite of the high property taxes. Are there 'hoods that have them? And any that are particularly walkable?

I didn’t even know this was a thing. It seems like most neighborhoods have streetlights, especially on the West Side.

I haven’t noticed a lack of streetlights but I’ll pay a little more attention. As far as walkable, there aren’t a lot of options other than Cimarron Canyon, maybe Kern or someplace around UTEP.

Most of the city you won't even see them. Downtown, and closer to the border highway, sure, there's BP and local PD all over the place and signs on the highway to watch for unexpected pedestrians, but I live in the east side of the city, and see migrants or refugees very rarely.

Unless you go looking for them in a very specific part of downtown, you won’t even know they’re in the city. Don’t believe the fake news - you could live here your entire life and be unaffected by migration/immigrants/Mexico/the-next-Fox-News-boogeyman.
