I understand why Freo went away from the red & green look (though I think it has aged incredibly well) but I will never understand ditching the anchor for some generic chevrons. It's like if they changed the iconic twitter logo to a letter of the alphabet... wait Same goes for the original port jumper honestly
It made sense cause it is taken from the original WAFL Fremantle FC guernsey, which was white with 3 red chevrons. They used it for the heritage rounds, then ended up using it as the basis for the current home guernsey, just with purple and white instead of white and red
The problem is that Freo don't wear purple anymore. Its something more like a navy. So they need to embrace their tradition and wear a brighter purple. But it all comes down to merchandise sales and they've sold their souls by changing colours, getting rid of anchor, changing iconic logo, leaving the Port etc...
Agree. They obviously felt self-conscious of wearing the original standard purple (as if they think it's some kind of effeminate colour) so they went to a noticeably darker purple that might aswell not be purple at all. I get that the boring old "less-is-more" crap is kind of the cool thing nowadays, but the club should get over itself and wear purple with pride again. The Melbourne Storm, Sydney Kings and Pheonix Suns all sport purple as their trademark colour, and I've not once heard of a single supporter complaining about it.
@@eddielong8663 originally the jumper designs wanted the purple even brighter and lighter. But club in 1995 actually went more conservative. The fact is that a lighter purple was trendy in 1990s, but isn't trendy now. Purple comes around about every 30 years. Glory, Dockers and Storm all started at the same time when purple was trendy. I hate it how the club has increased black and grey in their merchandise. Freo were green and red too and they need to keep their tradition.
Like your suggestions. Just Port I would change to a prison bar design, though with a teal top. Brilliant from a GWS perspective, just try and keep it to three guernseys, with a orange back for the home, as well as ridding of the away guernsey. Great for dockers. No changes there, and bulldogs I think the only thing needed is the blue collars. I think the saints will probably need a redesign, as well as hawthorn, north, and a new clash guernsey for brisbane. Great job, I believe there is more than 5 teams that need a new guernsey design but you know what your doing. Keep it up.
If it were up to me, North, Collingwood and Hawthorn would all be getting the same treatment as they all wear basically the same jumper but tell that to their fans 😂
I agree with the freo green and red designs but I feel like the purple haze is a great decision. Freo would reluctantly hand the green and red to Tasmania for the future.
@@mattn1 yea as I said I do agree with your terms. The green and red I’m pretty sure represents port and starboard. The purple were the overalls the actual dockers wore on the docks. A very well thought identity.
Reckon the old 70s/80s Dogs jumper will be our next change. Really like them too, gives an old school vibe. If we do retro round this year, that's my bet. Although I disagree with your opinion about our current guernsey (it was better with the red trim in 21/22)
I can understand the need to be different, but orange, white and charcoal are shocking colours, imo, as is the GWS name. As for Freo, the white anchor on purple (1:31) is awesome as is the white alternate version.
If Freo bring back the anchor just make sure both chest panels are green this time basically an inversion of their original away jumper with no red on the cuffs and the reason im suggesting this is no team ever in the history of the AFL has had more than 3 colours (including white or black) going from seam to seam on the jumper with a design, not to mention the colour of the number on the back as well as with any away or clash jumper Adelaide - blue, red, gold/yellow Brisbane - maroon, gold, white/blue Carlton - white, blue, grey Collingwood - black, white Essendon - red, black, white Fremantle - purple, red, green AND white Geelong - blue, white Gold coast - red, blue, gold GWS - orange, white, charcoal/grey Hawthorn - brown, gold, white Melbourne - red, blue, silver North Melbourne - white, black, blue/orange Port Adelaide - black, white, teal/silver Richmond - black, white, yellow/gold St Kilda - white, black, red/yellow Sydney - red, white, black West coast - blue, gold, white Western bulldogs - blue, red, white Seam what I mean
Hey, I reckon you should have a post where you tell the public to come up with suggestions for a jumper design and you'll do it. That will get a lot of interraction I reckon. I'd straight away push for a dark brown jumper with yellow pin stripes for Hawthorn. For Bulldogs a red jumper with the blue and white stripes, with red shorts. Port a return to the lightning bolt. Suns with an actual sun design. Fremantle an away strip involving a full chevron. Or alternative getting the green and red back into the home jumper, even if its just filling the spaces betwen the white chevrons.
Bulldogs for most of 70s to 90s had a white red white horizontal stripe. Its just recently they've gone back to the 50s with a white and red stripe. I think the blue jumper should definitely have red trimmings and I reckon it looks great with red shorts. I grew up playing footy against a team that wore the Footscray jumper with red shorts at home. Footscray red inverse design with red shorts.. Both looked bright and striking.
As a Port and Freo fan I totally agree with your redesigns. Don't quite think the Bulldogs are in need of a redesigns as I think their outfit looks pretty good, at least compared to the lameness of most other Melbourne teams.
I still think that Freo if they're playing Gold coast or Swans should wear a jumper with a lower blue yolk with blue shorts. It would immediately make their jumper and shorts be mostly blue and would avoid the clash without Brisbane having to wear a totally alternative strip.
Freo can't go back to the original jumpers. The jumpers got lost in the crowd. Players on the field couldn't see team-mates because they blended in with the crowd.
Suns actually need a sun on their jumper. I like the idea with the red and gold vertical panel. Half the jumper red and half gold. A bit like the classic surf life saving look. Time for the GC to go. Mind you the Red jumper with red shorts is really striking but just needs fine tuning.
Gold coast Sun should not use blue because this similar the West Coast Eagles jumper . Then if the sun changed the bike you like then Port Adelaide can wear the black and white poisons bars. This same difference
I'd like to see whether the EAgles could go for an golden-orange design. Either orange with dark blue wings. Or vice versa. How would that work. Then I'd like to see if a darker orange or ochre jumper with blu wings could be worn with orange shorts. I reckon all ochre/orange would look better than all yellow.
Why don't you line up the Freo alternative. Current home strip with the dark purple and the current home strip with a lighter 1990s purple. Line them up for opinion.
Yeh they ditched the anchor because they believed it was holding them down to the bottom of the ladder…. 😂 my theory is that they’ve never had a key fwd…in 2013 they could have beaten the hawks if they had one.. hmm 2015 they choked at home also
@@sam47511 he actually played as a key defender and in the midfield also… He went to fwd because they didn’t have anyone … don’t get me wrong Pav was a gun but in 2013 he wasn’t at his peak by memory he was injured.. he only played maybe 10-12 games …
there is no real hatred between eagles and dockers. both are owned by wafc and they've done their best at developing a perceived difference. But in reality they are 2 WA footy teams and most West Aussies want to see the other team do well.
For Freo’s home Guernsey, I would keep the chevrons but make the top one red, middle one white and bottom one green. For their away, I agree go back to a white anchor on a simple purple background. For clash, I would inverse the home jumper having the white background with the three chevrons and a purple middle one. I agree for derbies as well. Great work Matt, keep it up.
The anchor has always been badly done that's the problem. It should look less like a seagull and more like an anchor. Regardless Freo must have green and red on their jumper. Their all white with white shorts is a shocker that only the Dockers can deliver. Atrocious. Freo don't even like it much and wanted to wear their main purple jumper with white shorts, but the AFL have basically blocked it most of the times. Though surely if they played Hawks away they'd wear a purple jumper with white shorts. Freo need to embrace green before Tassie take it forever.
I wish Richmond would just wear an actual gold sash, ie the colour they wore throughout their history, not the "lime green high viz council worker" tone sash they've worn now for several seasons.
As a Freo fan and someone who respects Port (even though formerly from the other half of SA), I disagree on both. The anchor was good in its time, but the current one feels more traditional, especially since it was inspired by the Fremantle WAFL guernsey they wore for heritage rounds. I was glad when Port changed theirs, as I was never a fan of the original AFL guernseys. If they were to change it, I would go for the wharf pylons/jail bars, just with teal for the stripes instead of black, to lean into the port look and shut the Collingwood fans up. GWS and Gold Coast do need better guernseys, but for Gold Coast removing the logo will instantly make it better. Red with the yellow side panels would be perfect. For GWS having a pointed yoke with a pointed white v/chevron would be best, with black over orange for home and orange over black for away. Its just me, but I prefer the more traditional styles over some of the ones that look like NRL jersey for the year.
Never liked the Dockers anchor. It’s a weight around their neck. Keep the chevron with a Dockers logo on the jumper. No club should use green. You’re completely wrong about Footscray. The jumper is blue with a red and blue strip. Change that and Ted Whitten will turn over in his grave!
@@ACDZ123 The Bulldogs are a proud club representing Western Melbourne and Western Victoria. Don’t disrespect them. How many premiership’s have Fremantle won? Adelaide & Port have won and they’re expansion clubs. How many jumpers have Freo had? Too many to count. Can they land on one? Still looking for an identity and will ever be in the Eagles shadow.
You're talking about my pet hate of AFL. The horrible guernseys. The old classic guernseys of Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn etc are the best. These new teams have terrible designs. What are they thinking. they're just ugly. Hate the logos eg the dog on the bulldogs the G on the Giants. UGLY. Go classic. One thing with soccer, they get the club strips right. Sometimes it looks like children designed the strip.
It’s not a good thing when you could recolour a guernsey and it could represent anyone, guernsey designs should have a unique element that identifies who the team is.
