I live in Fairfax VA and tell visitors to the area if they have a car to take the 66 west to Front Royal and drive part of Shenandoah National Park, especially around this time of the year. It is about an hour and a half from DC.

As a Northern Virginia resident, your traffic comments are spot on. Leave lots of extra time if you're driving around the DC metro area. I would add that if you're going to Williamsburg, stay 2 or 3 days and visit Jamestown and Yorktown too.

I've lived and worked in the DC area for more than 30 years. There are lots of great day trips from DC... I would add Fort McHenry National Monument and Fort Washington National Park in Maryland; Old Town Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Blue Ridge Parkway (connects with Shenandoah National Park near Sperryville), and Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, with its quaint shops, roman-style spas and George Washington's "bathtub." I would also add that during the holiday season, Mount Vernon offers evening candlelight tours of the home and grounds. They serve warm cider and ginger cookies, and there are some fun outdoor exhibits and animals to see. Williamsburg is magical during the Christmas season, as well. And if you do visit Baltimore's Inner Harbor, try to catch an Orioles game at Camden Yards. It's a beautiful stadium, and it's within walking distance of all the hotels and restaurants on the Inner Harbor.

As a school child in Maryland, Harper's Ferry was a major fifth or sixth grade field trip. It meant that we left before school started in the morning and got back in the later evening, after school was over. It was quite and experience! My family took overnight trips to Williamsburg, VA. When my son was school-aged, we took several trips to Mount Vernon. It is a wonderful place with lots to see. Give yourself at least a full day for the visit. As a young adult, I was in a wedding at another of George Washington's river farms a little North of Mount Vernon. As we were standing on the lawn outside, we could see sail boats going by. We wedding guest were saying, "Look! Sail boats!" while the people on the boats were pointing at us and saying, "Look! A wedding!"

Hey! DC local and big fan. A great, hidden bonus of visiting DC is the ability to tour the significant buildings. After reaching out to your congressional representative, ask for building tours and times. They’re free and you can see places such as FBI HQ, Library of Congress, Capitol, Supreme court and others. For day trips, I’d suggest Winchester (1.5 hours), North Beach Maryland (1hour), or checking out the Luray Caverns Cave (1hour). Thanks for all your great videos and enjoy your travels!

As a local, I would add Shenandoah National Park as a must if you can. Also some others further of field- if you’re into the Civil War stuff, needless to say there’s a lot, but Antietam battlefield is about the same driving distance as Gettysburg. Richmond is also a hugely historic and quickly modernizing city that is only about 1 1/2 hours either driving or via train. Would also recommend a place beyond Annapolis to really take in the Chesapeake Bay, like Sandy Point or Kent Island.

Williamsburg used to be 2 1/2 hours 20 years ago - now it's at least 3 1/2 hours with traffic. Food in Baltimore isn't worth the drive unless you want crabcakes. Another day trip would be Great Falls Park on the Maryland side - The Billy Goat Trail is a really nice walk and view of the rapids.

Great suggestions. During a DC visit I suggested Harper's Ferry. Famous for history. But the natural beauty amazed us. The rivers flood, discouraging development and preserving that history and beauty. In DC: the National Cathedral is Gothic builr by the Anglicans. The Catholic Basilica is Neo Byzantine with amazing gold mosaics and a chapel for every ethnic group's vision of Our Lady...

As always, love your content, one place to visit outside the Mall (Smithsonian) is the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Air Museum out at Dulles IAP. It has all the BIG planes that does not fit in the Air & Space on the Mall. Another relaxing drive is Sky-Line Drive, check out Manasas & New Market Civil War battlefields in the valley then pop back up to the Drive. Also the National USMC Museum south of Mt Vernon in Triangle VA worth a mention...

I grew up in Hampton Roads and currently live in DC and go back and forth regularly. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to drive to Williamsburg in less than 3 hours even leaving early on a Sunday morning. It’s closer to 3.5 with minimal traffic.
@susanm9485
@susanm9485 3 дня назад
Because there is so much to see and do at Williamsburg, I wouldn’t consider it a day trip. For something smaller, but of the same sort of idea - only 100 years earlier - consider Historic St. Mary’s City. It’s about 90 minutes from DC. It’s some reconstructed 1630s - 1680s ish building, with living history interpreters demonstrating life in that time. It’s also an active archaeological site. It’s small enough that you can easily see it in a day, then head a little further south on Rt. 5 for some great hole-in-the-wall seafood places. If you want to make it an overnight trip, or if it is summer when there are long daylight hours, you can add on a visit to Point Lookout.

Excellent choices for day trips...... With Harper's Ferry it could be combined with the nearby historic college town, Shepherdstown, West Virginia (cool place worth a visit). I'd add Charlottesville, Virginia for an overnight trip (about 2 to 2 1/2 hours away from D.C) with lots of historic sites (Jefferson's Monticello) and many excellent wineries. Berkeley Springs, West Virginia (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away) is interesting, but visit Harper's Ferry first. Other places not mentioned are Middleburg, Virginia (an hour away) and the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia. Colonial Williamsburg is better treated as a separate overnight trip (or several nights). Richmond, Virginia is quite underrated (2 - 3 hours depending on traffic).

Monticello, Thomas Jefferson' home. Similar experience as visiting Mount Vernon. Next to Charlottesville and University of Virginia. A little over 2 hours drive from DC. Also Antietam National Battlefield another Civil War battlefield is similar experience as Gettysburg and about 1.5 hours drive from DC. While in Williamsburg can also visit the site of Jamestown the first successful English colonial town and Yorktown battlefield where the British surrendered to George Washington.

talking from experience here, if you want to see colonial Williamsburg, rent a room there, yes it is not cheap but no driving. We stayed in an apartment made out of an old smokehouse, very nice and we just walked about 400 ft and took a turn and we came through the hedge behind the Governors Palace. If we wanted to rest in the heat of the day, we were right there. The activities in the evening are great, the taverns put out good food and there are traveling period performers and you might even run into Jefferson, Washington or Franklin. Just immerse yourself, it's great

The “Real” Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, the Udvar- Hazy version is the exit just South of the main Dulles Airport road. In VA28. It gets ignored by many tourists because it is a ways out in the burbs. You can see all the big planes that don’t fit into the smaller version of it on the mall, including one of the Space Shuttles, the Ebola Gay, one of the Concordes, an SR-71 Blackbird and a ton of other planes and rockets from the history of flight. Probably a 45-50 min ride out from DC when there is no traffic on the Dulles Toll Road. Well worth it.
