We all know these are tricky shots, but they don't feel like they should be, your close to the green, its a short swing and the ball can roll for most of its journey, but they still give many golfers lots of issues.
So in this video Chris Ryan runs through the 5 do's and don'ts of chipping and explains why we should choose each one as an option.
Follow these 5 steps and your chipping will soon be a strength not a weakness

Good stuff - might comment on the importance of grip and how that might affect the soles interaction with turf…As you know, strong right hand grips can be disastrous for chipping

This is a revamp of some of your earlier short game vids, and it's great Chris. I've been using your short game tips for a while now, and it made a massive difference, especially proximity to the ball and weight distribution. I actually now tend to use my 9 around the green (unless the lie required a wedge) and I'm averaging 2 putts as a result. Feels great to chip to within a few feet! I only got there with your help 👍😉

Hi Chris, useful as ever. What would be your suggestion for the optimal distance between toes and ball ? and would you recommend to retract the left foot slightly ?
@bottlecap57
@bottlecap57 5 лет назад
Rolling the back foot towards the target and keeping it there made a noticeable difference to my chipping. No more getting caught on the back foot and good contact 95% of the time.

Chris, your videos are helping me to better my whole game. I do wish, as a women, they you could do some videos more geared for us with a women featured in the video. We don't look like you and also our center of gravity is in our hips not our chest. Our chest sometimes gets in the way in fact. The fundamentals are the same, I know, but it's nice to SEE a golfer who looks like you when learning.

My question, I'm normally a very good chipper but recently I've been hitting the occasional clanker off to the right I think I'm hitting the hosel any ideas ?
@jasjitnijhar3725

First off...thx Chris...great explanation.. I'm a beginner and my problem is strength modulation...I find myself close to the greens within 2/3 shots..but i end up with a score of 8 because i can't seem to modulate by chipping or pitching. My mates say my back swing is too much and to compensate i decelerate my swing or stop completely after contact w the ball. When I try the no wrist method..I tend to top the balls.... Help!!! Any pointers?
@maxgrahlher2206
@maxgrahlher2206 5 лет назад
Whatever technique works for the individual, but I have used the no wrist movement for years and it has always been awful for me. I switched to the Phil technique where you basically play your chips completely out of your wrists. I admit it‘s more challenging and your contact needs to be pretty much spot on, but ever since I have much better distance control and I don‘t get stuck in the rough anymore on deep lies, because I‘m moving much more aggressively through the rough and turf, which also generates so much more spin because of a much steeper attack angle. Also I feel like I have much less stored energy when just using the wrists.

Mate The first tip of standing closer has sorted my chipping dramatically. Cleaner contact, more consistent direction, and now holing, or lipping out chips.

What brand slacks are you wearing?

I find it easier on very short chips like this one to use the wrist more. I'm not talking about flicking them through of course, but I always struggle with making small enough of a body turn on short chips.

How far back should the club be taken back? This has been my biggest problem. I either take it back too far or not enough. What is the minimum take back distance?
@davidwalters313

Thanks Chris. Great video. If you open the face to get more loft do you aim your body more left to compensate?
@robbiegardner53

Do you chip using bounce only on a good lie. In 2nd cut would you more use leading edge with a steeper angle of attack? Or stick to same whatever the lie. 👍🏼

What is the maximum distance you would use your chipping technique for before switching to your pitching technique?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 года назад
Hey William, no set distance but I’d say a chip in terms of how I define it would be around the 10yd carry max 👍

I’ve realised lately that why always take a sand wedge from short range? If there’s no hazard creating the need for a high shot that stops when landing, why not just tap with a pitching wedge? Much higher success rate than a sand!
