This could be one of your best videos on Greek explanation. Most of the time, mistakes regarding interpretation are made because most individuals are moving too fast. What made your explanation so good (in my opinion) was that you got people (us) to slow down and focus. You also took the text, read through it, made comments along the way, and even added some academia to it. So, not only was the word taken in (read/understood), but a person closes this video being better educated in the scripture. Hope this input is helpful. As a quick note: If anyone is interested in better understanding koine Greek, I recommend the book: A Primer of Biblical Greek (N. Clayton Croy). Good material. It will help build your vocabulary, understand syntax, and provides exercises. I appreciate your dedication word, Corey. Thank you.
Below are a couple of quotes from New Testament scholars who disagree with Corey's interpretation. Check it out if you can bro "Although one article used for two plural nouns does not necessarily denote identity, as seen in 2:20 where there is one article for apostles and prophets, it does indicate that “groups more or less distinct are treated as one for the purpose in hand.” Accordingly, in the present context some sort of distinction should be maintained. After a study of the grammatical structure of one article followed by two plural nouns separated by a καί (as here), Wallace suggests that the first is the subset of the second and thus “all pastors are to be teachers, though not all teachers are to be pastors.” Hence, while there is a distinction between the two, the distinction is not total." -Harold Hoehner's exegetical commentary of Ephesians "It is doubtful, however, that the two ministry roles are to be identified. First, uniting two nouns under one article does not always convey identity. We have observed this earlier in Ephesians in noting that “apostles and prophets” are two different groups even though they are united under one article (τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν). Second, the Granville Sharp rule, sometimes invoked for supporting the identity of pastors and teachers, does not apply to this construction. Dan Wallace, who wrote his doctoral dissertation on the function of the Greek article when it appears with multiple substantives, has pointed out that the rule does not apply when the article appears with plural substantives. The pastors and teachers are therefore not to be identified as referring to one group of gifted ministers in the church. Nevertheless, because the two nouns are united under the one article, they are not to be regarded as entirely distinct groups. Paul probably expressed himself in this way because he wanted to convey that pastors are to be gifted to teach (thus, the latter is a subset of the former), but he stops short of saying that all teachers are gifted to be pastors." -Clinton Arnold exegetical commentary of Ephesians
Amen! Great video Corey. I was reading a commentary by Ray Stedman and he said in the Greek, Pastor/Teacher was one office. But it was good to see your explanation with the actual Greek text. Appreciate it. 🙏
I say this as a pastor with much respect for the great work that this channel has produced. Although I disagree with much of what you hear these days about prophets and Apostles in the charismatic movement, I must say that there are a ton of respected NT scholars (such as Daniel Wallace) who disagree with Corey's interpretation. Below is just a brief sample from the academic world "Although one article used for two plural nouns does not necessarily denote identity, as seen in 2:20 where there is one article for apostles and prophets, it does indicate that “groups more or less distinct are treated as one for the purpose in hand.” Accordingly, in the present context some sort of distinction should be maintained. I wonder when it started. The Lord pulled me away from a Lutheran church 15 years ago, that was doing deliverance ministry. I begged them to deliver me and they wouldn't. They said God was gonna do something different. 🤷🏼♀️I then moved across the country for work and God pulled me out of deception. Realize they refused most likely because God protected me. I watched them "deliver" my friend then blame her for "letting the demons back in with her behavior". Yea microwave sanctification isn't real.
@@Taushathetech Most people miss the part about being "Born Again" John 2-4. The Messiah says you can't even see the Kingdom, if you're not born again. Maybe think of it this way, it really isnt what would Jesus do ; it's what did The Sent Messiah do , where did He go to Church, who rules was He obeying, Who's the Gardener?
For anyone looking for an alternative understanding from a more academic perspective I highly recommend Dr Clinton Arnold's exegetical commentary of Ephesians or Harold Hoehner's exegetical commentary of Ephesians in which they both argue from the Greek text that the "Pastor and teacher" roles are actually distinct yet closely related. I appreciate the good from this RU-vid channel but you have to be cautious when individuals who make dogmatic claims on topics that are hotly debated in academia amongst conservative biblical scholars. Gotta take a more humble approach on certain topics.
Just cause your humble doesn't mean you're getting correct, trustworthy information. They arent different they both do the same thing. Kinda like a Father or Mother. Different on outside but inside both have same goal.....raise the children. Theres no difference stop causing strife in the body.
Respectfully, I never said humility equals accuracy. In regards to Eph 4:11, you're making dogmatic assertions that many with phds in the field have not even made. You cant just undermine certain alternative interpretations bro. Im not causing strife, im simply providing other legitimate ways to look at the text while recognizing the nuance. We're not talking about something as essential as the deity of Jesus, we're talking about a spiritual gifts distinctions. How about this, take a look at the following quotes by some of the foremost New Testament scholars on the subject( men such as the well respected Daniel Wallace) and perhaps you will see why I encourage a more nuanced view then what has been espoused in this video.

What is a pastor-teacher 😂. These are two different offices. Sometimes you might be a good teacher but not gifted as a pastor. However you would expect a pastor to at least be able to teach.
Thank you Corey for the explanation. For years, I always thought it was 5 offices until I realize that pastor/teacher is basically the same since both are teaching the Bible.
Our Father God never changes, we see he kept his promise about the comforter, he lives in us now, we are 2000 years or more inside of the last hour. An evangelist need different gifts then what a teacher needs, I believe in evangelist may very well work in signs and wonders, where a minister is going to work more with the gift of knowledge and understanding, a true believer who is a doctor have healing gift. Oh no he's moving just differently.😇 We need understanding
Aren't the older women instructed to teach the younger women in Titus 2??? We KNOW women can't be pastors so then the command in Titus 2 would make them...wait for it...TEACHERS! That's enough for me to confidently believe there are 5 roles. So in regards to making my point, I agree with Corey, "this issue is not that hard!" 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
By your logic, if dad cooks dinner, that makes him a chef; and if mom puts a bandage on a scraped knee, that makes her a doctor. Your argument is an equivocation fallacy.
Your argument is so weak though… Titus is not referring to a gift/calling. Just that older women must teach the younger. Colossians says we must teach each other one another in wisdom and psalms…. That doesn’t necessarily mean an office of a teacher!
He won't respond to this.... I've said the same thing.... I've even tried to get him to respond even to asking him to show me where ONE GUY was THE pastor of a local church? No response
In hebrew this would make more sense. As the word "and" is represented by the letter "vav" which is symbolic of a nail, it is the connector. It connects preacher to teacher in this case..... Meaning same or included together Like your analogy "Lord and Savior"
What is plain has been rendered difficult by by a wresting of scriptures. By his reckoning the office of teacher cannot stand alone. Moreover, by that same reckoning, the pastor is the only office accompanied by the gift of the teacher, which is not correct. In Acts 13 there was at Antioch prophets and teachers, no mention of a pastor. In addition, Paul, the apostle, declares that he is a teacher. One might argue that the apostle, prophet, teacher, and evangelist are teachers. That does not preclude that the teacher is not a separate and distinct administrative gift. The fact is, one may have more than one gift. And a congregation may be given more than one administrative gift residing in more than one person. Just because the gift of teaching is paired with another administrative gift, given by Jesus Christ, that does not invalidate it as one of the five administrative offices.
These offices are the expressions of Christ in the believer and there's no such thing as, each gift is distributed individually according to how God sees fit as other people would think. As long as you have the Holy Spirit you already function in all those gifts. We see this with Jesus and the Apostles and how they did ministry is the same as we should also do ministry. The work of the foundational Apostles was already accomplished therefore anyone who calls themselves an Apostle in this day and age is just the same as a missionary who goes on assignment to go preach the gospel. The same Apostle is an Evangelist because the message they are sharing is the good news of Christ, when they have a word to edify the church or instruct, they function in the office of a Prophet in that moment, and preaching the gospel is the same as teaching just as Jesus would raise disciples by preaching and teaching them for the work of ministry. And the same person is a Pastor because they have a responsibilty of feeding and being accountable for the sheep they're feeding, to mature and perfect all of them for the work of ministry. A believer has received all gifts freely and there's no special office to claim and say God specifically called me to be a such and such. It's not a title but an expression of Christ in the believer.
Under our apostle Paul’s ministry,to be SAVED, you must BELIEVE/ TRUST The Gospel of Jesus Christ,1 st Corinthians Chapter 15 verses 1-4.Jesus Christ died on the cross for all of your sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day.Jesus Christ’s Shed Blood is what saves you when you Believe this plan of salvation with your heart.Romans 3:25” Faith in His Blood”.
The thing that is causing confusion is ppl giving themselves that God never gave them. Ray Comfort is a textbook example of this. A lot of ppl love to give themselves this kind of authority because of the clout and attention that comes with it, especially the YT "teachers" and "prophets". Not only is it possible that ppl are practicing the wrong office, it is reality. Satan is a master counterfeiter, and God's government has always been his biggest target.
@lutherbronner okay, next time you have a disagreement with your pastor on a biblical point, why not just hop on the platform, take his mic. and correct him?
I watch your videos sometimes and I pretty much agree with some of your content. But THIS particular standpoint is simply wrong ! There are 5 offices … And each office still stands as of today! And HE gave “SOME”… Every ministry is NOT a 5 fold … And that doesn’t mean the ministry is wrong, but simply The Lord didn’t make THAT particular ministry to be 5 fold! But Apostles are still in the land as well as Prophets… No need to cover the other 3 … We know those offices still are of today! But this is not a Salvation issue but a doctrinal issue . So i digress !
So if teacher can be separated from pastor why say there isn't a 5 fold. There those that are teachers and the there are pastors who should be able to teach
@@naeembourne2474 Paul was a teacher according to scripture. 2 Timothy 1:11 NASB95 - for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.
Corey you contradict yourself. #1. You say that there’s no 5 fold ministry because all listed in Eph. Are one person, which you interpreted Along side Greek concerning the word (AND) is just ridiculous. You have to consider the context in which someone is speaking. Instead you dismiss it based off of one way of using that word. The Greek word Kai, is actually used as a form of uncertainty. Which means it could be bad, or it could be very bad. It is also used in an addition to something that already is. God made the heavens and he made the stars also… The church is one body , but have many members, that all have a different function… Not to dismiss the other, but all gifts are needed. Your feet doesn’t have the gift of sight, but your eyes needs your feet to get you to where it sees….etc. Here’s your contradiction : You say that in Eph these are referring to one person! Which includes Apostles and prophets, pastors, evangelists and teachers… but then in another video you say there are no Apostles/Prophets today! You should study your Bible just a little bit more, The scripture you gave is not the only one that tells us about the five fold. Rather there’s another scripture that gives us the order of the church leaders/gifts to the body. ”And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.“ 1 Corinthians 12:28 KJV
The moment you find yourself trying to explain to 2+2 to adults in the university of becomes a problem. The problem is the lecturer. The interpretation of scripture is not based on greek or Aramaic.......it's based on meditating and assimilation and making sure you keep things in context. I think it can take you about 2 hours explaining this.
Why is anyone calling people “pastor” the most common of titles used and. I one gives a thought to the scripture where Jesus literally tells us NOT to do that. Any title elevates that person and no one is above another .. Jesus is the head not “pastor” How about you just call him by his name!
No, Christ said that a Christian shouldn't call someone "Father" as a title. Your theology is clearly not consistent with the fact that Christ Himself elevated Simon above the other disciples by renaming him "Peter". In the ancient world, the "Peter" name designated someone as the chief leader of a religion. That isn't to say that Peter was a pope, but God most assuredly elevated certain men above others in His Church with His government.
@@theeternalsbeliever1779 wrong … Matthew 28… don’t call anyone father or teacher… and since pastor is related to Shepard, minister, preacher, teacher , etc I think it’s clear Jesus didn’t want anyone to walk around with a title. The very next verses are the about exalting and humbling. So, the question remains … why do you call someone “pastor” ?? It isn’t actually biblical. What happened when the disciples called Jesus “rabbi”?
I think making a mountain out a mole hill. You can take either way, your emphasizing paster/teacher. Although many pastors are teachers that does not change the fact that are many teachers that aren't pastors. If you want emphasize something emphasize the fact scripture teaches women are not to preach to men. Ignoring what the word states plainly in black and white.
There are many women in ministry recorded in the Bible. Apollos was thought by a couple. Paul commended the works of some women in ministry. Pastors are not the only ministry role. So saying women shouldn't be pastors, well what about the other 4 offices
@@teoesak Paul talks a woman not having spiritual authority over a man. So as long as that criteria is meet then a woman knock herself out. Another words women and children are her ministry platform. There is scripture that talks about women aren't to govern.
@@jamesharris8652 yes you're right but what does it mean not to have authority over a man. In a ministry context. Because what Paul said must have parameters. And the passage he said that what was the context of the whole chapter
@@teoesak It appears to me that woman is not correct (even if she's right) a man's opinion on a scriptural matter. I have had a woman try to correct me on a point I was making with a man. Who even thought her husband was the lead but it was evident she was the man. The scripture is clear a woman is to be silent in regards to scriptual matters. They are to be taught by her husband. I believe they can lead music praise/worship and prayer. They can speak prophetic messages, all though they should not lead in any service that has to apply scriptural understanding, like the Lords supper.
@@jamesharris8652 the idea of a woman can't correct a man even though she is correct and he is wrong. All I see is pride, which Jesus taught against. Not Having authority over someone doesn't make you unteachable. Humility means you can be taught, and by anyone.
Listen, we don't have the real Hebrew Bible. You don't have the Hebrew valley, so why are you complaining about the word? No problem is saying why you complain about the word. Why you trying to stir up different things about? The word world, it's a word of God. No, we don't need. You don't need to be up here doing this.
Wonder why the English translators don't translate from the Greek like you just did? Does any English bible translate from the Greek as you have done? If no English bible does, why not? Does any English bible agree with you anywhere in the world?
@@fnjesusfreak If they did, there would be no reason for this controversy of this 4 or 5 fold thing. We would all speak the same thing and believe the same thing. As Paul wanted everyone to do.
Corey seems to have a very cynical approach to anything that is on the “charismatic” side. His same measure would easily crush him on something’s he says out of his own mouth.
@@ricksonora6656 I agree. That is my point. Corey states that a person with the Holy Spirit should know that there is only a "4" fold ministry but I can also say if Corey had the Holy Spirit he wouldn't say "x" or "y" especially someone as "studied" as him
