Your video made me think of the scene from High Fidelity (which did not made it to the final movie) where the record shop owner Rob Gordon (played by John Cusack) visits a lady who's man has left her and asked her to sell off his record collection. The collection has EVERYTHING and he can get it for almost no money - but ends up not buying it, because as he says: "I can't do that to another record collector" 😆

Hey!! So glad you featured those Misfits records. I also have a “3rd” press Bullet which I was skeptical about but I was able to prove its authenticity. I have a great book called “On Earth as it is in Hell” which was made by a collective of Misfits collectors. They broke down each single and took detailed pictures of all the variations between the real and fake ones. If you need I can send you some pics of the pages about Bullet. Always dig watching your videos especially the punk stuff!

You've lost me. As a customer and a fan. You've lost me. I lived in Arizona and loved shopping at your store. Since moving away I've watched your videos and thought of you as a champion for collectors, sellers, transparency and integrity. I have no problem with you charging whatever you want for records you buy, or keeping them for your own personal collection, but where you've lost me is the hoarding of rare records, keeping them out of circulation for the sole purpose of trying to inflate their value. I know a few record stores that do this, and I don't shop there anymore. Record stores are the beacons that attract folks selling off collections, and then in turn the customers buy from those record stores (at a profit), getting those records back into circulation where they can be listened to and appreciated. You won't sell the Misfits or Nirvana 7 inches until they are worth the cost of a luxury car, or down payment for a home? This kind of tactic is what is currently artificially driving up the prices across the board. I hope to God those Nirvana records never get to be worth that much. Making them even more unattainable for those who aren't super rich or own a record shop. You want to see records graded and resealed like trading cards? That defeats the whole purpose of listening and enjoying them, and would be an awful turn off for many collectors. The only people who would enjoy that kind of turn would be those sitting on a hoard. I really hope you consider a change in thinking around selling these rare grails. To be clear I'm not gonna buy them even at the current market prices. OG Misfits records are crazy expensive. The bubble is already here. Sell now. Share the wealth. But if you squirrel them away hoping for a golden retirement plan, it shows me a side of you I hadn't seen before. Where's the guy who takes ERC and Michael Fremer to task for their inflation tactics? Where's the guy who takes MOFI to task for their misrepresentation that leads to inflated value? I'm not a troll. I was your fan and subscriber for years. I tried calling the shop 2 weeks ago to discuss and try to appeal to your personally, because you've always seemed like a good and reasonable guy. But since I haven't heard back, I'm writing this publicly in hopes that you will reconsider. Charge what you want for the records. What the market will bear. But don't try to manipulate the market. You're better than that. I hope you make the right decision in the end. (longest post I ever left anywhere)
@TheInGroove
@TheInGroove Год назад
I’m not trying to manipulate the market. I just don’t agree with the market. I feel these records are worth more than the market does and until they reach what I think they should be I don’t want to sell them. I do feel records will end up being graded in the future and I think the big money is yet to come. Nobody has been prevented from listening to this music by my actions. Almost all the music in the world is currently available on my cell phone. The very first record numbered to 1000 by one of the biggest bands of all time Is not on the same playing field as a manufactured collectible like ERC.
@michaelscholar
@michaelscholar Год назад
You sitting on these records, takes them out of circulation, increases the scarcity and therefore increases the value. You don’t like the market price, and so through your sitting on them you are manipulating the market price. This is an unfortunate tactic used by some less reputable record shops. I never expected it from you. Sitting on rare records waiting for the value to increase and even causing the cost to increase. This is not consistent with your previous actions taking other record industry folks to task for similar shady practices. You might want to reflect on this a little more before doubling down. You are a record seller, collector and community leader. But until now, you have not been known as a hoarder hoping that the records you acquired will make you super rich. Those records are already over priced. And you’re pushing for even more absurd price hikes? I hope you fail in this quest. It would be a dark time for record collecting if you’re vision of the future were to come to fruition.
@bigsweetc6
@bigsweetc6 Год назад
@@michaelscholar I just want to say I couldn’t agree more. The fact that he has a platform and is essentially influencing young collectors is sad as well. I think people forgot about the community aspect of the hobby and when it simply comes down a stock market mentality it’s actually quite depressing. But this is also the same guy who brags about and hoards VU & Nicos. It’s like don’t you want to get records into the hands of the people who will appreciate them and cherish them and make a few bucks or is it all about making all the bucks…
@michaelscholar
@michaelscholar Год назад
@@bigsweetc6 yeah for me there's a clear line between selling records, and trying to turn them into your investments. If you're gonna listen to them, or just collect them, great. More power to you. If you're gonna sell them for high prices, do your thing. But when you say you're gonna sit on them for years until they are worth way more, that's just shitty. It creates a false sense of scarcity and manipulates the market. For me it was a sharp turn after years of loving Mike and the In Groove. I really thought of Mike as one of the good guys. Someone who loves music and fights for his customers and music lovers. Who fought for what is right. This is DICK move though. I know a few record stores that stock pile shit in hopes of making huge payloads down the road. Its gross and enough to make me want to spend my money and time elsewhere. I used to watch the In Groove videos all the time. Now I cant watch any. Im done.
@bigsweetc6

@@michaelscholar I agree with everything you said except the pricing methods have gone into excessive greed categories as well. I’ve collected punk singles for over 25 years so I’m very familiar with the market. There’s a few of these I’d really want and would make tremendous offers but he has them priced literally 30 to 40 percent over the HIGHEST sold price. For instance-I’ve been looking for the Fastbacks single for years. I love that record and would play it in my heavy rotation. All the recent sales have been around $180-$250 and I’d happily even offer Mike like $275 which is exceptionally high and excessive for that record. It sold only in the $300 range in 2017-5 years ago and I kid you not they are asking like $365! It’s just just ethically wrong. People should make money selling records, I’m not opposed to that but I see so many other dealers and shops that sell those exact same titles and aren’t compelled to put the full squeeze on a fan base just because they know it’s in demand. Mike I’ve been collecting punk records for over 25 years and some of the prices you have put on these on your discogs are totally out of touch. I understand you’re a businessman and need to make a profit but aren’t you also a collector as well? I’ve seen many that you listed that would easily be the highest that record has EVER sold for. I think it totally ruins the hobby when stuff is so radically priced over historical market prices. Just because you CAN get some ridiculous high price doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Mike by all means make a profit, just please don’t gouge people so much that we lose all enjoyment. I bought a NM Deadbeats for $75 about 8 years ago. I know it’s gone up since then but I dare to even ask what you’re charging for your copy.
