Live axle, awd system from a van, tb from a Corvette and an 18g turbo. Nothing special at all. Yet the result was special.

That's because a V8 swap is so easy.

The stock fuel injection system in these trucks in certain years is their downfall. With the spider injection (center sequential) injectors were not able to be swapped and thus the max one could obtain was around 400hp max with correct tuning. Later years used the multiport which solved this issue, but before that the only way was to swap to a marine intake and run an after market system. Also the 4.3 Z code engines were also multi-point in an era of throttle body injection, thus allowing them to stretch the limits when matched with the td06.

+Mark Rich Yes perhaps for the 4.3 iron slug (except mine is an aluminum motor)I don't believe there is anywhere I can purchase a custom auto tranny to manual tranny conversion kit including pedal box or a direct swap tubular coilover suspension front(AWD) and rear to replace the leaf spring and torsion bar setup, or a bolt in roll cage that integrates into the chassis for stiffness and maximum safety, or bolt in chassis stiffening tubing, or unique wide body front fenders and rear body panels or radiator relocate kit, or bolt in racing seats, or bolt in quick release steering column with quick release, There is a ton of custom fab work that you don't see in the video that if I didn't add would make any regular bolt on s-10 look twist like a worm on the race track. None of this would have been possible without quality fabrication and welding.

There is nothing special about your truck that isnt done daily . Im a machinist there isnt much I havent seen . Almost every part on your motor you bought and bolted on. Do you understand what custom means? 1 off you made with not one like it in the world. Daily people add manual transmissions , different transfer cases . IE from the sarfi, astro van. Why do you think people love chevys there legos for grown men. Any one who wants to do 11 secs or better gets a custom roll cage. Come to my house , I have a 50K machine shop in my garage with a 4 axis CNC. You will see real fab work. Taking a billet raw piece of metal and making a unique part. Cast a piece of Aluminum and create something no one else has. Its amazing what people consider "Custom" this day in age. Pal your truck is bolted together. You want to see custom work look to the part 103 aviation community some guys are building carbon fiber planes from nothing.

+Mark Rich Yes as far as the motor is concerned you are correct, except there is more to this project than just the motor. If you are a fabricator then you would understand that it would be impossible to duplicate the complete build with simply "bolt-on" parts. Like I said there is a considerable amount of metalwork and welding fabrication underneath the skin. Budget is a concern as well, so fabricating everything one off when I could source from GM parts bin would be silly. I don't have access or the machining, and engineering skills to even attempt to build my own engine block. Also, who is claiming the truck is a one off masterpiece? There are a handful of other AWD Syclones, but none that I can think of that have gone to the extreme that I have with the build purpose of hillclimbing. I'I bet your shop is impressive no doubt and if you want to mill your own engine block just for bragging rights or trinket value, more power to you.

JD FR = Front-engine, Rear wheel drive. FR based AWD examples include the GT-R, BMW AWD cars, AWD Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, AWD/4WD trucks and Truck based S/CUVs. You take out the Front wheel drive components of an AWD vehicle and it is still a RWD vehicle. FR based AWD cars are fairly uncommon becasue of the prevulence of FF, Front engine, Front wheel drive, cars to which AWD is often added after the fact, like the Ford Fusion, Mitsubishi Lan Evo, among others.. Purpose made FF-Based AWD cars include most AUDIs and Subarus.

vix121 Nope. "based". FR-based AWD... If you take out the Front wheel drive components of an AWD vehicle, it can still function just easily as a RWD, as a FF-Based AWD will function as a FWD with the RWD components removed. FR based cars are uncommon because there aren't many FR cars this is done to, these days. But FR-Based AWDs still occur, like the GT-R and BMW and Mercedes AWD versions of their RWD cars. CHRYSLER and GM have similar offerings but there are desperately few Purpose made FR based AWD cars.

500hp to four wheels is quite a bit. Possible conservative tuning?

As I mentioned previously below the truck had roughly 110k miles on it when we decided to go all out. If I get the urge, I can buy a low mile collectible Syclone, park it, look at it, never drive it and hope it appreciates in value some day. The 4.3L aluminum block is now out of production, but once upon a time it was offered by the GM Performance division. It is what is known as their a Bowtie racing block designed to be stronger to handle higher horsepower levels along with better oiling passages designed for higher loads and rpms. 500 horsepower to the wheels is plenty for a 3000 lb truck used primarily for road racing. Keeping the engine reliable and the truck drivable is crucial. Even with the all wheel drive and sticky R compound tires, this much power can still spin all four tires!

Andrew B Exactly! Tuned conservatively for longevity! No interest in building a 1000 hp dyno queen by swapping in a giant lethargic turbo, monster fuel injectors, overly aggressive timing and ultimately having to rebuild the motor all too frequently.

And turn it into every other youtube car channel - nah!!! Tuned is great, it gives real world people a real world chance to show of their real world and affordable creations on the world stage. High end builds are great - for the 10% of the population that can afford them and the 10% of that 10% who wish to modify them, the rest of us mere mortals are happy with Tuned showing builds that are done at home, over time, using blood sweat and tears, no cheque books and big name tuners.

We've done Porsche's (2 of them, in fact,) a C6 Race Car, we've done BMW M3's, (four of those), we've done Aston Martin's, Mercedes (2 of those), the Venom GT, which costs $1.1 Million, GTR's (two of those), Lamborghini's, CTS-V's, a six-figure Lotus, and a million-dollar motorhome. So we've done tons of high end stuff, you've just forgotten about it.

Making a Syclone/Typhoon run properly in stock form in the first place costs as much as a BMW. Let alone the countless dollars sunk into this particular Syclone to get it to where it is. You may not know it, but this is a high end build.

Actually, that is the 8 second drag Syclone owned by Robert Pothorcki in Sweden. I own this Syclone.

Blowing out a freeze plug is not from abuse. It could have easily happened when the owner was driving it. At least it didn't happen during competition.
