None of these people have given a coherent reason for why they voted to leave. Everything they've said is incredibly vague. I get the impression they simply didn't think it through and had absolutely no idea what they were voting for or the impact that leaving will have on us all. I did so many face palms during this I nearly knocked myself out.
@solay78
@solay78 7 лет назад
Same impression here....as much as I tried to ingnore the nagging feeling of immigration being the driver, all I saw were a bunch of comfortabley wealthy home owners bemoaning the fact that their country had changed. @speleokeir
@speleokeir 7 лет назад
You're missing the point. I'm fine with people having a different opinion. It's when people can't back them up with a coherent argument that bothers me. The utter ignorance of the people in this video regarding the EU and it's benefits and what Brexit will mean for us all is disturbing. If you think austerity has been bad then wait until Brexit. We'll lose a massive amount of tax revenue. That means even less money available for public services and the NHS. So they'll be more cuts. That's why we HAVE to stay in the Single Market and Customs Union. And if we do that we may as well stay in the EU. I've yet to hear any plan for Brexit, even a year on,or any actual benefit to the UK. Even the Tories admit it won't make any difference to immigration. The city and economists universally agree it will be an economic disaster. This can already be seen by the pound plummeting, inflation and the cost of living rising, losing our credit rating, major companies planning to move abroad, dropping from the 5th biggest economy to 6th, dropping to the slowest economic growth in the EU, etc. There's also no plan regarding leaving the EMA or Euratom which is essential for stuff like getting isotopes for cancer treatment . Or replacing lost research grants. Or any number of other things. In fact there is still NO PLAN. I'm also deeply concerned that our human rights and workers rights are at risk. And EU controls regarding pollution and food safety standards won't be kept. Especially since the Tories have advocated scraping all of these since 2015. Many people didn't understand that Brexit was a vote for more poverty, more cuts, worse health and their rights being removed. Looking at alternatives to being in the EU is fine. Leaving without any alternative plan is insane. It's like a teenager leaving home after a row not knowing where they'll sleep or how what they'll do for money.
@sammy9679
@sammy9679 7 лет назад
A "coherent argument" is relative. For example, talking to modern nazis, you could say "hitler was evil because he commited genocide." You would see that as a coherent argument. A modern nazi however would probably take the time to explain situations to you, explain plans and talk through Hitlers actions, why he did what he did and why it should have led to a greater Germany. To you, they mayaswell not be speaking at all because they wont change your opinion on the matter. To them, YOU'RE the one who sounds incredibly vague. To these Brexiters, all they need to say is what they need to say. Understand it's very arrogant and patronising to tell other people that they didn't know what they were voting for. There are alot of problems with Brexit (Just as there would have been alot of problems with remaining) but in order to solve these problems we have to have open discussion, that doesn't including bring rude to people and acting high and mighty. The country is so divided and it's the result of everyone on BOTH sides of the argument who can't stand to be told their opinions might not be worth as much as what they think they are.
@speleokeir
@speleokeir 7 лет назад
It's not arrogant to say Brexiters didn't know what they were voting for. It's a simple fact. Because there was NO PLAN for Brexit except to leave the EU. No alternative was ever given. And still hasn't been. Guess what? "Brexit means Brexit" isn't a plan. You might as well say "Flobble means flobble" It makes as much sense. A coherent argument to me is saying: 1) What do you expect to gain from Brexit ? 2) Then stating a realistic plan of how you'll acheive those aims. I've yet to hear anyone who voted to leave offer either. And they've had a year to think of something. And they haven't come up with a single benefit of leaving. The impression I get is that lots of people feel they are ignored and that they felt Brexit would be a change and that any change would be an improvement, unforunately that's not true. The trouble is the EU has long been used as a scapegoat for problems that are actually down to a series UK governments. Leaving the EU won't solve these things. If anyone comes up with a plan that will benefit the UK more than being in the EU then great, I'm all for it. But so far nobody has. We're all going to be worse off if we leave. In fact we already are. Check the cost of your weekly shop compared to a year ago. We had the highest increase in living costs for years. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If we actually do leave the EU things will get much worse. Leavers say Remainers are arrogant. If telling someone they've made a mistake then explaining why is being arrogant then fine we are. What does stinking your fingers in your ears and saying "Not listening, not listening" make Leavers? There's a mountain of factual evidence of how Brexit will damage the UK. Continuing with Brexit now is cutting off your nose to spite your face. It's an act of self-harm done simply because Leavers don't want to admit they've made an error.

Not necessarily, i think there is a feeling among many people in this country, not actually unfounded, that our politicians are giving away the birthrights of people who will go on to inherit this country. The EU is one way this is happening, both through immigration and our tradition of national sovereignty. Also, just because young people like something doesn't indicate it's worth; my generation has a romanticized view of the EU, they see it as a haven of progressiveness and positive rights and have a tendency to overlook it's more negative characteristics.

Interesting, but don't you think that perhaps exercising some change rather than aborting could have been a solution. It rather baffles me that this rather radical decision was taken on the basis of an non-binding referendum. Especially considering that Johnson and the like didn't seem to have any concrete plan on moving forward after leave had turned out to get a slight majority.

only one point of yours stands imo. the language issue around integration. The EU has provided such a huge market for banks and boosted economic growth the ability to borrow and loan for new enterprises has been 10 fold greater then any legislation that has hindered small busineseses, we've seen our greatest influx of businesses and growth of new businesses since the end of the 1950's, which was a decade post war. Furthermore wages arent being pushed down by cheap labour since immigration is has been charted to be only of a large percentage (around 15-20%) in large cities like london manchester birmmmingham etc and in nearly all cases they all voted remain. Additionally rising inflation, not immigrants, is inadvertently pushing wages down by forcing real prices of goods up hence we are getting less for our money. Also culture is an issue many of our british dont want to admit. I've seen many black asian etc do menial jobs that pay decent wages if not poorly but many British feel they are above those job then go and blame migrants for taking roles when better jobs are given to those in previous employment or who show commitment in the work field i.e working menial jobs and making progress in life instead of the older generations feeling entitled to dictate that they deserve British jobs first simply because they were lucky enough to be born here and not earn or graft for it which they love to brag about, when they've done fuck all, won no wars since our last major war was nearly a century ago and enjoyed all the benefits of a booming EU but now downturn has grew they want to cut its leg off, the low house prices, cheap if not free university and the ability to buy a car and get a mortgage in your local community if you lived in a major city, but the youth and migrants are both self absorbed and full of entitlement, whats the word "millennials"

The return of fisheries and agriculture controls to Westminster will benefit coastal and rural communities as the UK government will be able to shape policy to suit these communities without having to dilute their proposals within a framework that accounts for 500 millions EU members. I've seen estimates of over 100k jobs lost in fisheries since we joined the common fisheries policy in the 70's.

@charlesfitzgerald890
@charlesfitzgerald890 7 лет назад
Some of what you highlighted there is true, ill give you that, yes people like me who at the time was 21 and about to graduate university voted to remain because we were scared,. We were scared of another recession, scared of more debt, scared of absolute uncertainty because no nation had ever voted to leave the European Union. I was lucky enough to be a child during the last recession but that doesn't mean it didn't hit my family's and my own future finances. The 2008 crash is directly related to the rise of the Conservatives and the tripling of the fees I had to pay to secure the education your generation got for a fraction of the cost. My generation is not entitled, we simply have the ability to look back and reflect and the see the opportunities others had before us and no legitimate reason as to why we can't have them other than the fact there isn't a "magic money tree". Yet here May is with a promise of 17% corporation tax and financial help for those who Tory MPs who lost their seats. I voted remain for stability and the chance to simply live a decent life like my parents and grandparents before me. We now face the biggest crisis since 1945, with no government, no plan, and no mandate. Its also a bit rich saying people voted remain were uninformed, where's that 350 million quid a week for the NHS mate? oh, that's right, it's going to pay for the 100 billion pound divorce bill...

As a non-UK citizen, just a few comments: mentioning Switzerland is ridiculous... That country has EU legislation and codes for almost anything they produce, import and export and do in general. Switzerland is much more into EU than one may think. The same goes for Norway, there are few tiny reasons why these countries do not want to be part of the EU. And that's ok, but UK is not Switzerland nor Norway. Also, I see these people talk often about "future generation". Guess what, that "future generation", or young, to be more precise, voted "Remain". So, how are you supporting future generations of Britts when you voted opposite to what they voted for? And finally, for those who voted "Leave" because they are scared of immigrants: well, nothing will stop Indians, Pakistanis, Iraqis etc to enter UK. It has nothing to do with the EU. But Brexit will for sure stop Poles, Slovaks, Lithuanians, Croats etc. Immigration to the UK is much more related to your historical connections to certain countries, than to EU regulations. Anyway, good luck. Such an amateurish mistake.

I was struck by how nebulous the reasons given for Brexit were. It was as if there was some sort of code, that I'm not privy to, that was being used. It would be useful if Brexit supporters were more forthcoming. The one explanation that seemed clear, that freeing Britain of euro-regulation would promote trade, appears to me both short-sighted and self-contradictory.
@louislux

I don't get it either. They talk about community but don't talk about how that relates to the EU. If it's about foreigners it's really hard to argue that it's not at least a bit related to racism and xenophobia like the blonde girl said. When talking about being ignored and not being heard by government, seems unrelated to the EU. On trade they were just wrong, Europe is the UK's biggest trading partner and other countries rather trade with the EU as a bloc than with just the UK. The issue with Greece and other smaller economies is a problem the EU has to deal with and it's not a position the UK would ever be in especially since it's not part of the euro zone.

I really think these people have mistaken the fragmented union (U.K.) as being a problem created by Europe. Most of the issues and concerns that leavers cite community, or lack of, being a big issue. Economically, we were doing very well in Europe before Brexit, we still are to some degree. But the problems in. Britain do not come from Europe, they are a result of lack of proper internal governing. If you think things will change, then you need to change the government. But we don’t have a credible alternative at the moment. Brexit has, over the past two years, consumed the government in the politics and the enormous requirements needed to divorce us from Europe, at the expense of everything else. The saddest thing of all, is we will lose our friends in Europe. Britain is an island and we still have an island mentality. But this is 2018....when we should be thinking globally, in Europe this was possible. It still is with Brexit, but our true trading partners are in Europe and the USA.... As for the rest of the country, Brexit will be tough for the regions... It’s the survival of the fittest, Wales won’t have EU funding to fall back on now. I appreciate this is a democracy, but some things the U.K. public should never have been given a vote on, Brexit was one of them.

The female retiree to North Wales was the epitome of hypocrisy, in my opinion. Part of the reason she can enjoy such a relaxing retirement in the area is due to the relative deprivation of income depressing house prices. Having grown up in North Wales and still having family in a very rural area, the level of EU funding that has helped regenerate the area is phenomenal. To the extent that it's difficult to visit anywhere in the region and not see a sign saying 'EU funded project'. At school in the ~2000's we were beneficiaries of funding encouraging outdoor activities, as was my younger brother. £16M in funding for boosting adventure tourism alone has been lost, in addition to £8m+ in establishing cultural heritage sites related to tourism. 75% of the region's income is from tourism. New Scientist had an article sometime ago on how Brexit could be good for the environment; without the UK watering down legislation stronger standards will emerger. I dread to think what the 52% will think when the UK signs trade agreements that require we conform to EU laws and regulations, which we will no longer have any say in their design.
@A203D
@A203D 7 лет назад
There are no 'EU funded projects'. Its all our money we've given to the EU, they've taken some for themselves and given us back less than what we've paid in. Then they've taken credit for something we've paid for. N.T has it exactly right. Its a sham. Nothing more than theft.

But do yo uthink that money would have went into those non existent EU funded projects? Because it would not have. Because that money would not exist, because Brittain would be the hobo on the border of europe. @johnrobinson51
@johnrobinson51 7 лет назад
@N.T. The main contention I have with your point is that you assume that the Westminster parliament would distribute wealth and investment to these extremely rural areas of it's own volition. Which it can do already if it so chooses to, but it doesn't and hasn't as budgetary funding to local authorities across the UK and Wales has been slashed. Whilst, I do understand that it having the funding streams dictated to you is a source of frustration. The sentiment from the Welsh Assembly and local authorities is that Westminster devolves and spends too little. Making, the EU funding streams a vital contribution to regenerating the area. It is not a cyclical argument, the EU has identified these areas as deprived and has been attempting to regenerate areas that Westminster has been neglectful of. The lack of due diligence by the Westminster to improve the lives of the majority of the population is shocking. As I am sure you are aware, the UK gov. has been in breach of it's own air pollution standards, and has said that improving it to our own regulatory standards is too difficult. I am thankful that the EU has taken the UK gov. to court, in order to improve this. The austerity narrative has crippling the development of the UK outside of London. I think it is far more important that we focus on making the UK government more accountable than blaming all of our problems on an EU bureaucratic boogeyman. *Our funding deficit with the EU is closer to ~14% and not the 100% you used in your analogy, but I do concede the point you make.
@johnrobinson51
@johnrobinson51 7 лет назад
Hareward Wakes Please don't reduce the discourse to slurs. I did not contest the UK’s position as a net contributor. If you believe there is information I am missing, please direct me towards it; understanding both sides is fruitful to discussion. I have also been aware of the apparent subversion of democracy through the EU choosing to endorse regeneration projects that Westminster has not followed. And, also my internal contradiction through a disdain of centralised and removed bureaucrats. I accept all of the above because Westminster under the foreseeable enduring Tory policy/ideologies it seems that regional funding for regeneration will not improve. There appears to be very little impetus, especially given the depth and breadth of cuts and fixation with Brexit at the cost of all other ongoing domestic issues. I have not and would not try to make a case for remaining in the EU on the basis of regional funding alone. The ship has already sunk and valid points for and against can be found along the entire fracture line. It is a lamentation at the realistic prospect of regional deprivation deepening and, the partial absurdity of loosing funds because our own government is ideologically opposed to regional investment.

to me all these reasons for leaving the European union are no concrete reasons at all. the UK is in a chaos and it seems to me that people are using the European union as an excuse and putting the blame on them for the mess they find themselves in. why is it that it was mostly the older generation that voted to leave. this brexit issue has divided the UK so much and it's shocking to also hear some Britons coming out with discriminating remarks on some other RU-vid sections about how they want their country back from the Polish for example. I was born in the UK and gave up my citizenship in 93 with no regrets. I have been so grateful that in the European union I have been able to have free movement and make a better life for myself. i feel so sorry for the younger generation back in the UK that won't have that opportunity.

@camcam638
@camcam638 7 лет назад
Will there really be a change after Brexit? All those interviewed are quite well off people. Will Britain not need people to work for low wages in order to keep Britain competitive. Or how else will this be done in an economy which is based on service industry, farming and only little production? Wouldn't the economic system need to be changed to a more social model which I assumed Corbyn was proposing. Someone characterized his agenda as a continental social welfare system - which made sense to me somehow. I didn't get why people made him up as a communist when he actually said that if you go through with Brexit you have to reconsider the basis on which your economy rests. So will it continue to be a free market capitalism which is somehow dependent on competition in wages as well? Or will the British system changed towards better work contracts and a better education system and thus with an improved state organized welfare system? It seems that you cannot have both after Brexit because you voted for Brexit to get rid of immigrants. How will they be replaced, by whom without opening the border again - now through uniquely British legislation? Or will they be replaced by British nationals - are there many who'd be quickly integrated into the labour b´market and qualified? I see no way around a more social model of British economy than is now if Britain wants to leave the EU entirely. How else will the government keep the promise to keep labour immigration influx low and Britain competitive? Will they find ways to force British people to work (very much like in the movie "I, Daniel Blake") to keep up with the competitiveness? If they want to keep the economy going they will have to open the borders after Brexit again? Or how will this work? Will Britain suddenly not be dependent on cheap labour any longer? And how so? Restructuring an economy takes quite a while because people need to learn new professions. I can see why people are happy about being independent. But how will the foreseeable future after 2019 look like? Isn't this "let's have a brighter future through change" a bit naive - because the world won't change and the actual system won't change much. People vote for democracy, more democracy and the people's say. That's great and gives great feelings to have a common cause. But once free trade and global capitalism steps in all these arguments aren't quite as convincing because the country needs to find new ways to adapt to the old problem: how to be competitive. Please, someone enlighten me about how this is debated in Britain and what hope Brexiteers have?

Your view about if change is needed then it's essential that it's guided by the right people. Define the right people. @martinwanko5571

Hi James The subjugation of Greece ? Which subjugation ? The greek lend a lot of money, and when the banks didn't want to give them more, they should be bankrupt. Just like this. But the other Euro states bailed them out gave them credits, in return for the demand to get their things in order. What is the problem ? If the greek had balls, they would have said: money ? we don't need money. We do it the argentinian style. By the way, how much GB gave for the bailout of the greek ?

Well the fact you described there arguments as "blah blah blah" pretty much sums up your bigoted opinions. You clearly were not listening to what they said, so I will spell it out for you. Number 1. The EU is fundamentally undemocratic, Number 2 immigration has been too fast for communities to adapt, Number 3 to open up trade with the rest of the world. With your comment you have exemplified the problems with the remain campaign, you don't listen to other people and anyone different to yourself must be wrong.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what the UK has to leverage in the upcoming trade negotiations with the entire world? Because as far as I can see, Britian doesn't do anything that can't be done anywhere else, and with the EU set to make a stunning example out of what happens to those who leave the EU, how does that translate into a position of power when negotiating with other nations? UK to EU, give us all the free access to your market or we will ??? UK to US, give us a great deal or we will trade with ??? Seriously, change my view. All I hear is, now the UK can trade with the world on our own terms! But you already were, as part of the largest economic zone in the world. Which has more clout? The supermarket or the corner store?

I'm just amazed the Guardian made a video about pro-Brexit people without sneering at them and putting them down or anything. This video isn't great, but at least they let them talk. Although many commentors say this video is bad because of the weak reasons these Brexiteers gave. I'm pro Brexit, but I agree. This videos points aren't great. Maybe that's why the Guardian made this video.

N.T., The UK had a right to veto every EU law & regulation, it exercised that right more times than the other 27 EU countries did combined, so the sovereignty issue is confused just on the right to veto argument. Trading with the rest of the world through import/export licenses has been an integral part of the EU since its inception, without any major problems, international businesses & financial markets do not like uncertainty, but what the Brexit deal will look like is very uncertain, that's why on the balance of probability I voted to remain, but I fully acknowledge & respect the referendums outcome & leavers views.

After much deliberation I voted to leave. I find it shocking that both sides use such rhetoric as Remain being for idiots and Leave being racist etc. My decision was based on what I see as an existential threat to Europe and the many nations that make it up. Ultimately I had to ask some tough questions such as why is the trade of goods linked to movement of people? What was the EU, formally the EEC established for? Based upon its actions for many years what will the EU be in 10 or 20 years? All signs support the theory that it wants to create a united states of Europe. That prospect is terrorising if you care to look at the history of Europe. P.S. Both campaigns were utter dog shit.

What a refreshing change to see some of the many people who voted to exit the E U , with legitimate arguments, not being depicted as the senile, uneducated, racist, and deluded people that the BBC and remainers have tried to make out we all were. I voted to leave, principally on a question of sovereignty, and also because of the worries that the EU hierarchy were determined to go down the road of the United States of a Europe, further reducing the control of the individual members over their own laws. I have been asking everyone I meet that voted remain, to explain how the system works, so far, no one has been able to answer me, and yet the remain voters all insist that anyone who voted to leave did not know what they were voting for. How ironic is that?

Explain to us Rosamond how we lose sovereignty as an EU member given that every single EU regulation is drafted by our government and voted for by our ministers. Any move towards a true United States of Europe would require unanimity.
@danielmouncer4131
@danielmouncer4131 6 лет назад
Try asking brexiteers how the system works, and you'll get the same amount of people not knowing how the EU system works. The fact is EU membership is relatively complicated, and can't be summed up in one or two short sentences. Most of the time Brexiteers say something like " we want to take back control!, regain our sovereignty!". OK well that sounds nice and all but what actually does that mean? How does brexit actually benefit you? If we left the EU tonight at midnight with no deal, does anything actually help you? What laws that you are forced to follow or dislike are you no longer repressed by?
@Pizza23333
@Pizza23333 6 лет назад
For people to be reasonably expected to accept a simple difference of opinion said opinion does actually have to have some basis in truth and reality. Unfortunately for those who voted Brexit, most of their arguments can be disproven really, really easily. The few that can't are still disproven somewhat easily assuming you keep moderately informed. Take, for example, your "United States of Europe" point. All I have to do to show that isn't an issue is to point to the opt-out secured by David Cameron, which allowed the UK to refuse any further intergration within the EU if it so wished. This is why it is said Leavers did not know.

People basically recognise the importance of being able to control those who govern over them. Political union was not what the UK voted for in 1973. And in order to make their case for continued EU membership, those who advocated remaining must denigrate and belittle the UK to a point where it no longer seems possible to be an independent sovereign nation. That will never play well with the majority.
@Winston31
@Winston31 7 лет назад
It seems to me for the most part the UK retains sovereignty over the vast majority of things that affects its citizens in their every day lives. Which areas are you specifically concerned about and where do you feel we are losing our sovereignty? It would be great to get someone else's perspective on this.
@awesomeavenger2810
@awesomeavenger2810 7 лет назад
Are you claiming that the EU has no effect on laws and regulations in the UK? In return for giving its permission for the UK to leave the EU, Brussels has demanded anything upwards of £100 billion from the UK taxpayer. This, it claims, includes a hefty sum to cover the cost of pensions and benefits to UK bureaucrats working in Brussels and Strasbourg. What do you think those people did all day?
@Winston31
@Winston31 7 лет назад
Awesome Avenger not at all, I'm just asking which areas that affect our daily lives are impacted most due to a lack of sovereignty? And quoting the amount of the supposed divorce bill doesn't answer the question.
@awesomeavenger2810
@awesomeavenger2810 7 лет назад
It kinda does. These people are not employed to sit and twiddle their thumbs all day long. As the EU takes on more 'competences' (power), it takes away more authority from directly elected government. Take trade, for example. We have those who advocated remaining in the EU talking of disaster should the UK leave the single market. And yet the UK doesn't have any trade deal with its biggest single trading partner, the US. Why? Because such things are no longer handled by national government. It's interesting that we have those who wish to ignore the referendum results demanding a second referendum on any trade deal the UK government might reach with the EU. And yet I don't remember any talk of a referendum in the UK, never mind the rest of the EU, on the TTIP trade agreement with the US? You would agree that trade is important, I'm assuming? It is after all the main weapon in the arsenal of those that wish to remain within the EU.

Most reasons are not related to the EU. Even Swiss has to comply with almost all EU regulations... Both camps clearly are having trouble with local problems, and the best thing is to put them at the EU so they do not have to blame them selve or Westminster. But sadly they will discover that those problems will stay after leaving the EU.
