Ballon dor is the equivalent of the MVP trophy, you need to have stellar performances and they need to have value (ie matches for CL, WC, League, Cup, and country). So if you have good CL matches and bad Cup matches you are more likely to win compared to someone who had good cup matches and bad CL matches because the champions league is the most valuable club competition so it makes the matches and performances in that competition more valuable
