Thank you for this video! My daughter was in first grade of school when she got ringworm of the scalp, we saw many dermatologists there was a misdiagnosis because they told her it was psoriasis when it was not and as a result everyone in my home was infected. That disease is a nightmare. The scalp itches so bad all day and it hurts, the hair falls out. I have a question, my daugher was prescribed with Griseofulvin, how many weeks of Griseofulvin is necessary to heal? I was prescribed itroconazole capsule for 20 days.
Griseofulvin is an older generation drug but in some cases the only effective treatment. I usually do a check-up visit every few weeks and decide about further treatment
My son had tinea capitis with a large patch of hair loss and was treated with griseofulvin with good improvement. He continued to have dryness of his scalp. Later the dryness became worse and the griseofulvin was repeated with good results. Several months later he began to have red painful bumps on the back of his head that spread to the sides of his head so we went to a dermatologist instead of his PCP. The culture took a few weeks and the finding was fungal. He was treated with Terbinafine for 6 weeks and his scalp improved with dry skin left. About 3-4 weeks after stopping the medication, the red bumps are now back and spreading rapidly. Could this be caused by something other than a fungus? We have no pets. We live in Texas. Than you so much for the video and any thoughts about about his case.
Every situation is different and also depends on the type of fungus. I usually continue antifungal treatment for 2 months or more until all cultures are negative and every clinical sine of active disease is gone
I have this but my dermatologist did not believe me, it cost me money and I’m stuck now trying to find a way to manage living with it. She refused to get close to my hair she just thought my scalp was dry and maybe from stress, but if she looked closer and cared she would’ve found the morsecode hair. she said it only occurs in children not adults. I don’t know what to do.
Hi Prof. I'm still battling FFA now with MTX, isotretinoin again(after I stopped and the inflammation went up) and Finasteride. Have you seen results with isotretinoin decreasing inflammation in your patients in clinic?can it take longer than 2-4 month to control it and is it dose dependent? I'm taking only 20mg daily. I really hope you'll see this. Thank you in advance.
I usually use a lower dose, but 20 mg is OK. Adding finasteride or dutasteride will improve the effect. The stabilisation is after about 2-4 months. Sometimes intralesional corticosteroids are helpful
@@profLidiaRudnicka Thank you Prof. !!!! I really don't know why derms prescribe Plaquenil as first line treatment when it did nothing for me and when isotretinoin is proven to be far more effective.
Hello Doctor, How can you differentiate tinea capitis from dissecting cellulitis in the scalp? I think my dermatologist gave mr a wrong diagnosis of d.c. Thanks Doctor.
