*Important:* At 5:15 a map was used which excludes portions of India which are claimed by China, despite the fact that they are obviously owned by India. I, Caleb, was the one who edited this video, and completely missed this detail due to the fact that I am not too familiar with the geography of India - while making this blue map of India, I grabbed a silhouette off of Google maps to use as a template in Photoshop, but failed to realize that the silhouette excluded these Chinese-claimed parts of India. I absolutely should have double-checked this to ensure the map's accuracy, but failed to do so. *We are not in support of China claiming these parts of India* and so in order to rectify this, we have intentionally blurred the map of India in an effort to avoid spreading false information. Update: On October 2nd, 2020, Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla would be launching in India in 2021, and thanked Tesla fans for waiting for the EV manufacturer! Tesla is also in discussions with the industries department of the Karnataka government to set up an R&D centre in Bengaluru. Update: Nitin Gadkari has officially announced that Tesla will be coming to India in 2021.
Indian constitution claims those territories based on outdated map cartography done by Britishers a century ago, but for all practical purposes are owned and operated in by China. So there is the Indian nationalism in me which says it belongs to India, but a practical brain which knows the real world scenario. You should look up into the territorial dispute of Kashmir and how it is divided up between India, Pakistan and China if you are interested in Geo-Politics. Apart from that, this was a great video and you summarized the possibility of Tesla coming to India pretty nicely.

I am Techie from India & I have multiple startups in developing few of the complex projects in AI & ML. And when I got to know about Tesla Autopilot features few years back, no wonder, till today I discuss about *Tesla on Indian Roads* with my colleagues or friends. In those discussions, one point I always notices is ---- *If TESLA can pull it's AI/ML based fully functional Autopilot feature in India, then ELON will be considered as GOD here* And it's not exaggeration, that's absolutely TRUE. That technology will really be an engineering marvel of all; which I hope it happens soon, bcoz you know its ELON MUSK over there you humankind & he is kind of an ALIEN who can pull anything if it's Challenging to him. If that happens, most of Indians start buying Tesla's which is one way a huge market, and rest others car owners also tend to shift to Tesla gradually. If such happens, the same Jeff Bezos thing repeats like you know where Amazon & Bezos market value stands before & after entering to Indian market right...!?! Business in India is all about population & number game. Like it depends on selling one item with a profit of 10$ for 10-people make 100$... Or else sellling one item with a profit of just 1$ for 100-people makes 100$... That's the Buss-model what most works in India bcoz imagine running 10-Tesla Cars in a same street bcoz of taking high profits less business -;- And now imagine 100-Tesla Cars in that same street bcoz of less profits high business. The same thing what Jeff Bezos Amazon did with Prime Subscription Price in India & rest of the world. And many many more it goes on, if I type more. So stopping it here for now.😁 *And Thanks for making this Video @Celeb* --- it is very well detailed & the mentioning with Indian conversion Values for better understanding to Indians & all others too. I liked that part very much. Appreciate it & subscribed now. 🙏 Like to see much more awesome content as such. 😊

@Neel Javia I'd say such people who think that only emotion nationalistic people are capable of having is to be offended at this video are a wuss. I'd call myself a hyper-nationalist by all figures of speech, but I also am aware of the areas we as a country and people fall short in and do not shy away for admitting it. When people tell "There's a problem" on your face and it's true, the greatest virtue you can exhibit is to accept it and continue to work on whatever ideals you were working on to remove or at least strive to remove that shortcoming. The internet generation however believes in outrage more than building something. Oh, we aren't one, that's for sure. To be a superpower takes a lot of PR. Tesla may enter india..but it's sophisticated features are not ready for Indian roads, rash driving,no following of traffic rules...no way autopilot will work here.
I have a feeling that the emergency features will actually make driving in India more difficult. For example, automatic swerving to avoid collision will actually cause some accidents, as I know in India people don't mind driving straight towards each other at full speed, and then missing each other by inches at the very last second. Also, squeezing through traffic with your mirrors up is a way of life here - Tesla will be beeping and trying to avoid collisions in such scenarios. In a way, Indian drivers are the most talented in the world - they keep calm in situations where people from countries like the United States or Canada would be panicking. -Caleb

Hi Praniel, while I do hope this happens, I highly doubt it will. This is not something that I have seen happening from other luxury brands - the price remains constant (or increased if factors like import tax are at play) most of the time with luxury products, and the company selling the product pockets the difference. But if you know of some examples of the price decreasing, please let me know, I might just be unaware of such examples. Because you're right, labor costs will be quite low in India. -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires Best example is iPhone. Generally Indians pay a 30% premium as import duty. But the recent budget models (SE & XR) which were assembled in India had good price cuts due to local assembly in the Foxcon plant at Chennai. If Tesla can source their assembly parts in India & push their backward integration here, the cost of production will come down to peanuts.
With the level of automation that Tesla has, it might be difficult for labour cost to have much impact. It's because of automation that the cost has gone down to $35k
Backstage With Millionaires . Indian EVs like Nexon have a range of around 312 km with a battery size of 30 kWh and still costs ₹14,00,000. I know that Tesla has a luxurious feel , make super charging stations and have to spend on research and development. But 70,00,000 is a huge sum for most Indians. Autopilot won’t work in India. And Indian EVs price will be coming down as lithium batteries can getting cheaper every year. They will have a hard time competing in India among middle and upper middle classes.

I live in chandigarh....and i will recommend you to check the architecture of chandigarh.......tesla cars are gonna work perfectly in chandigarh. It is like the perfect city for a Tesla.
@Neel Javia I have a theory , We Indians doesnt follow Lanes becasue percantage of lanes marked perfectly ( maybe 1-10% ) . Thats because maintaining marker lanes is expensive even on National Highways . Its both people and system like feedback loop . Road System doesnt work properly due to low funds by Govt. -> low Income Tax payments (2-3% pay tax in india ) its less than people bought new cars bought every year . From 60 years we learn as we Indians doesnt want to pay tax , its best to remove it completely and create new system like add 1-15% transaction cost on every product based on type of product and service while paying similarly like GST. I stuided that in Singapore or Malaysia , every 10%tax on transaction cost collected spent on military . So each and every Percantage should be decided like 1% on Roads , 2% on Police and internal Security , 5% on infrastructure development , ect.,
Indian people are sensible enough to not let their Tesla drive on "normal" roads, most of us will only use autopilot in highways and I'm sure. This will drastically lower down the accident rates on indian highways, so I think Tesla would dominate indian market. And if the import taxes are lowered by any chance, boom, literally every person with a good income will own a Tesla and guess what, the pollution would get lowered down to such great levels. It would also help if tesla also introduces an affordable renewable energy source, it would impact the climate drastically. I really hope that in 2021, the price of tesla does not exceed 60Lakhs after taxes, after that, it would be unaffordable for most of us. And if tesla comes without taxes, which is 21 lakhs in the Indian market, you would see a Tesla literally everywhere.

The issue lies with Indians who agree to work for peanuts in their initial stage for experience, which for some continues until retirement. It is also impossible to get paid more because it's said that in major cities in India if you throw a stone it either hits a dog or an Engineer.
I think the issue lies with our population explosion, if you ask for an average salary and refuse to work for peanuts, it would take them a few minutes to find someone who would take that job!

Government wants MNC to invest & build their factories here in India(as the name itself suggests MAKE IN INDIA) So, fingers crossed 🤞 & we as Indians will glad if Tesla set up its factory in India 🇮🇳.
Hi Kanik, yes I came across Make In India quite a bit while creating this video (although I had heard about it before this, as I cover the weekly Indian startup news), and I completely understand why the Indian government has decided to set these duties at 100%. Even I don't want to see Tesla come in and dominate and monopolize India's EV market. At the same time though, as per Elon Musk's tweet, it is this 100% tax that has actually prevented Tesla from setting up a factory here in India - as per their company policy, they don't build factories until they've made enough from selling Teslas in the country where the factory would be located. I guess in a way, if they can sell enough Teslas to pay for a factory, then they know without any doubt that the factory is a worthwhile investment. However, I do hope that either the government or Tesla as a company decides to change their policies so that a factory is built in India soon! -Caleb

Hi Gurjant, charging stations are certainly an issue, and yes, as I said in the video, as long as Tesla sticks to the metros, price won't be an issue - there are a lot of wealthy people in India who are excited to own a Tesla. But I think the biggest issue, as I said in the video, is the 100% import tax. This is arguably the only reason why Tesla hasn't entered India. -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires the only solution for is to establish a manufacturing factory and reduce the dependency on imports. Cause i personally think govt. policies are really fucked up here and require a lot of changes to work efficiently in future

Hi Bhavya, thank you for the comment - please don't take offense at me disagreeing with you and Abhishek, but I honestly feel that the same situation exists everywhere that Teslas are available. For the time being, most high-quality EVs are more expensive than petrol/diesel vehicles in the same price range, even after you factor in cost savings from subsidies and lifetime fuel consumption vs. lifetime electricity consumption. That being said, I do agree with you about needing a stronger reason to switch. In the United States, a lot of the people who are buying Teslas are doing so because they want to feel good about themselves and they want to feel that they are helping the earth by slowing global warming. But in India, people are much more price-conscious, and I think also here in India people are a bit more desensitized to the whole global warming thing. It can be 45°C in Delhi, the air is unbreathable due to air pollution, but people will still chose the A3 over the Model 3. And I guess the only way to fix this is to make EVs cheaper than petrol/diesel cars. -Caleb

Ites really a well researched video. As an indian, I must say that I have no choice but to agree with most of the points and facts mentioned by you. I wish Tesla could setup factories in India soon instead of just thinking about making profit by exporting and selling their products here. Tesla needs to embrace India as their own if they ever wanna do well here. That's the way India's trade policies are designed. Tesla needs to understand the worth of India with one fifth of the world's population. They need to create jobs here and share their profit with the people, and in return they will empower Tesla even further. Just look at the way TATA does its business, it's sustainable as it is for mutual benefit of both parties. The world needs to become one now, and only businesses can do that with their policy change, as there is no more room for exploitation, the world has ran out of resources.

I think that it would be so cool to see thousands of charging stations across the country the way that we see in the United States. -Caleb
It's crazy! I'm not sure where you live Huma, but I once hit a pothole so hard the front panel of my scooter cracked off, so you could see inside my scooter. The plastic which was holding the screws to keep that panel on just cracked and exploded from the impact - I had to go buy another front panel. I hope you weren't seriously injured. -Caleb
what india needs first is the infrastructure to support electric mobility before we think of having EV's on our roads. Not the other way round. Let them think of establishing ev charging points first and then talk about having their cars on the road.
Hi KM Appanna, it seems that you have thought this through, but I'm curious to know why you feel this way. Shouldn't demand dictate supply? I personally feel that charging stations should be build in preparation for the EVs that will be on India's roads in future years, but some would argue the opposite. It's a circular chicken and egg problem. -Caleb
@@backstagewithmillionaires Thank you for replying to my post. But what is the point in having ev's if you cannot charge them . It's because if you look at the way any infrastructure is built in India is exactly the opposite. We make a city but all the infrastructure that is needed to support it comes later and which only puts more pressure on the citizens and the system . I would want a lot of EV charging points to be setup across any city first and support from the government to promote ev's as a sustainable form of transport that would encourage more people to buy such vehicles in the future and make it more economical .
Hi Soham, glad you liked it 😂 I actually made the thumbnail before even writing the script believe it or not. I just had a lightbulb moment and spend half the day working on making the Tesla look Indian, and _then_ did all of the required research and script writing. -Caleb
I mean it's too different in each of the states , I myself am from kerala which is in the south side of india and it's mostly different from lets say mumbai, We rarely have powercuts and I've seen a lot of lanes on the road here but for the most part you are correct , and by the way I'm just speaking from my experience here and it may differ for others , so please don't spread hate. :)
Hi Atom, I appreciate the reasonable, level-headed response! You're right, India is a diverse country with a huge infrastructure quality spectrum. Some areas are highly developed, while others are falling apart and in desperate need of repair. It really just depends on what city/state you're in! -Caleb
We hope the situation gets better too Vinayak. Somehow, I am quite optimistic about the next 10-20 years for India. While there are flaws in India's infrastructure and other areas, it is also a wonderful opportunity for a lot of people, especially the once who are looking to solve problems. It would be amazing to have a few tech companies coming from India that can be as big as Tesla, Google or Apple. :) -Varun
Tesla Model S Indian version. Feature: can Identify potholes and speedbreakers. Do care about lanes but still not. Has Animal recognition, can recognize horses and cows. Autopilot will adjust it speed and even overtake whenever there is a chance. Can say curse words if anyone cutts you off By the way I am an Indian.
I feel like Tesla should launch in cities like: 1.Mumbai 2.Delhi 3.Kolkata 4.Bengalore/Bengaluru 5.Chennai and a few more big cities before going onto small cities/towns(Sorry if the spelling of the cities are wrong) Edit:I forgot to mention that Tesla Autopilot might be a bad idea on Indian roads as they are very bumpy, bad, old.(This is my opinion please dont hate on me)
