Also the guy with the notes on his car and the lady watching his house when he said I'm scared didn't that one end up him being with the girl she was a red headed girl not that girl but a thicker girl but still a pretty face. it’s a tactic to avoid conflict. it doesn’t reflect how he actually felt. it serves two purposes. 1. showing teeth asserts confidence and a willingness to fight back 2. smiling is comforting to strangers nev is smart. he’s doing this without even thinking about it. he knows he would lose that fight on crutches. he also knows he’s not making a huge sacrifice, because unless the dude is ready to kill someone, he won’t do anything. which is the third reason nev is smiling. 3. self assurance he knows he’s fine and he’s doing the good thing. he’s also proud with how he reacted when he felt afraid.
“Kelsey” seems like the the dude in high school that would post rants on Facebook about how no one popular accepts him and they all make fun of him, so he doesn’t want any friends, yet the reason behind him not having tons of friends is because he assumes everyone hates him, so he is purposely mean and angry at everyone.

What makes these people so creepy and unsettling is their total lack of empathy. Usually, people who've done "wrong" recognize it to some greater or less degree and show contrition or at least pretend to when caught. When you see people who just laugh about it or even act like the victim is the one in the wrong, it's deeply disturbing because it's so outside of what most of us understand or are even capable of understanding.
