The one they missed is the best one of all AFAIC and that is the Ford EcoBoost 2.3 liter. That engine is making 350hp in the Focus RS and the Mustang and it is very easy to make over 405hp with a chip.
@@mikesamra9126 You mean the Mazda 2.3 liter that ford is now calling EcoBoost, but are producing them cheaply, because they bought 25% of Mazda and got a license for the engine and the CD3 platform?
@@badass6300 in fact the 2.0 engine was designed by Mazda model L and modified by Ford under the ecoboost variant and the 2.3 ecoboost engine is the same 2.0 engine only enlarged and hardened to withstand a higher power. And the mazda no longer uses this type of engine so I could say that from here on is the Ford engine
@@EliasTheHunter what are you making with it? I literally just bought a 91 hard top na mr2, want to convert it to 3sgte or do a hybrid of the na & turbo to make a 5sgte as they call it
William Colon Very nice! I never got it on the dyno before I sold it. But I just bought a stock 2003 on Friday in Tampa, got back home to Detroit last nice. Putting it on the dyno for a baseline in a few hours!
PorkChopGaming Completely agree, especially with the B series, the B series was the main reason I ever even wanted a Honda they are the most Iconic Honda series (my opinion) and extremely reliable I was actually really shocked to see that they were on the list...
that and the M3 at the time were totally legendary. the sounds are unreal, and were good at top end too,155mph/250 km/h,not too shabby at all for that time. still think the Evo 2 was the mutts nuts.....yeah and now the A45S, how times have changed.
The Mercedes unit was so much better than the BMW unit of the time, the BMW would shake your teeth out . The 2.3 16v was so much more linear and smooth with the same power delivery. Plus the car was miles better too in every possible metric.
Can someone help me? I’m really confused. When I type Toyota R engine family in google I notice that it is capable of doing 40-412kw. Is it really true for that engine to make 412kw in a production car and if please tell me which car is that.
@@Daniel-qy9vc Never in production cars. Maybe there's a crazy hot 20/22r hybrid running a TON of boost that can do that but that's not typical at all.
Guys, if you're going to have an engines 'best of' video can we please have some clear audio of each one? Surely worth a few seconds of extra video length ;)
Car Throttle messed up this one. In the 1.6 we have Citroen/Peugeot GTI or Toyota AE86, so much better than the Alfa. The EJ25 instead of the legendary EJ20? C'mon...
1. The EJ257 still has and always has had unequal length headers. 2. The EJ207 is the one that's really worthy to be on the list. I'm actually wondering if you confused the two, considering the EJ207 is the one that went from unequal to equal length headers.
@@nikolaikvarme4006 or the Volvo engine is basically a Saab engine, and Saab was also the first to get some actuall power in it witch Volvo didn't really achive intill the t5 in the 850R
surprised the honda b series isn't on here, by far the best bang for buck engine ever made (imo), and has run 7 second quarter miles at 200mph with 1600whp+
Alex Thompson Maybe letting the quarter mile apart, the B series is one of the best and reliable four cylinders one can buy today. This engine can be the perfect one if you don't have enough money or be a beast if you do. They are a lot more common that the SR20 or 4G63, easy to mantain, and with a supercharger or turbo bolted on you can go plenty fast. Plus, you find them on great chassis cars, like the EF, EG, EK Civics, Integras and more.
dr hurtz sure but most of the 4age's life was outside of the timeframe so i can inderstand if they didnt want to include it for that reason. love dat little engine.
The Saab B235R from the 99-02 Viggen, for sure. Mitsubishi TD04 turbo, 2.3l, 230bhp, extremely tuneable, extremely reliable. 100 hp/litre. All shoved into a small 1410kg/3100lb hatchback. Have seen accounts of 600+ bhp from this engine when bored out to 2.5l on high compression, low boost. They also had the B205R, 2.0l, 205hp with the same TD04 between 1998-2002.
gotta love the 2.0T from 94-99.. the only thing in my 9-3 that's still going strong! Is the mitsubishi unit that much better than the garret? I think the td04 also powers the 9-2x/wrx aswell if im not mistaken. About to take possession of a 9-2x tomorrow!
Matthew Dmytar the TD04 is far better than the Garrett, yes. The 9-2x is basically a rebranded and restyled Subaru Impreza. 9-2x W/hood scoop is the WRX and takes all the same mods as that car with a nicer interior. IMO if you're looking for a 05-06 WRX on the super cheap, get a 9-2x Aero. At least half the price and nicer inside.
Yeah I'll be replacing my 99 9-3 with a 9-2x aero for now. I have a feeling the engine is going to cost me much more than the b series in the 9-3. I already have to do the belt for example. Glad to hear about the TD04 however, and as Mr. CarThrottle says it does growl nicely, of course. You don't have a Viggen do you? At the end of the day though my C900 is still the most fun.. it's just a little dead. ;)
Wasent the b235 the ones with the oil sludge problems,The eco power one with less friktion ? The b205 however is bulletproof, i got 470 horses at the wheels on mine and i dident change any parts in the engine.
No B202 either. The engine that single-handedly started the hot hatch turbo segment of cars. My slightly breathed on '90 900spg still surprises many new cars
yall forgot to add the Toyota 2zz motor that went into the celiac and vibe and back when lotus was around it was supercharged and put into the lotus elis
I`ve heared that in almost all cases of oil starvation (which is common on track car with original wet sump) you would need to replace crankshaft. But it`s extremely light weight is really good thing.
I have it in my Lotus Exige S2 (NA, not supercharged). 192 HP for 1.8L and 8500rpm redline. It's really fun to drive in a light car with it's huge "VTEC" (lol) effect :-) In a track driven Lotus with semi slicks a baffled oil pan is mandatory !
I have a vibe gt with the 2zz in it and I live driving it that little thing hits 8200 RPM I have never driven something that hits that high on the Revs also the "vtec" is really cool also never driven something with that before my vibe and it is just different
2ZZ-GE for sure! 180 HP and redline at 8.2k RPMs got me falling in love with it! I own a 2001 Celica with said 2ZZ-GE and i love it to death! Not perfect by any means but damn does it have a charm to it!
yup i have a 04 TSX with a K24 engine and raced a friend in a 2013 civic SI. even tho my car is 10 years older it still won and i haven't modded it yet lol
i believe so but would have to more research on both engines. but the whole thing was interesting given that my car is 10 years older than his yet it was as close as it was. heard the newer SIs and type R are better tho so at least honda did add more power with the new gen
Mazda BPZE, 1.6 and 1.8 in MX-5's, 323's and Astina/Lantis. Reliable, forged crank, oil squrters for the pistons and 7k red line. And its a non-interference design to boot.
jose .rodriguez as im 16 now, me and dad bought a 323 gtr that was not being used for more than 12 years now and im planning to fix it. Guess im lucky huh?
Saab B202 also :D in many cases it's more reliable then B204 but have to agree with you C20LET insane engine also. I got my own Saab 9000 1998 B204E (Turbo)
How do you explain that? since stock H22A's struggle with 300hp before shitting themselves while stock B series engines have been ran way higher with less displacement.
clearly he cant do basic math...lol but the ford engines are kinda bad, the turbo models are known to gum up the intake valves unless you put a oil catch can on it.
That's the moment I realized.... they're cranking out these videos, reading some wikipedia bullshit and... they're not true enthusiasts, but rather another marketing body on yt. What a fucking stroke-fest of a video. Anyone can google "popular 4 cylinder engines" and get some bs facts about the most common engines of the last 20 years. God damned. this is like some click bait bullshit, click 8 times to see ever slide, facebook shit post shit. Unsubscribing from car throttle now.
It held the world record for the most torque per litre (114 Nm per litre) for a naturally aspirated car until 2009 being beaten by the Ferrari 458 (117 Nm per litre).
@@basmca1 The Alfa 4C engine is an all aluminium new engine contrary to the 1.8 twin spark that has iron engine block. The first iterations of the 1750 TBI also had a iron cylinder block but don't think it was the same as the 1.8 ts one.
22RE is a great motor, wife and I fit one to her RA40 late last year. It's got decent power. But, there are many other Toyota engines that are much better and much more legendary. This list is kind of disappointing as only one Toyota motor made it in.
My wife's Celica hasn't blown a headgasket as of yet. Chain guides are fucked though so need to replace with metal ones. It's a nice turn key car now with the EFI, also fit AC and power steering. Major upgrade from the shitty 18RC that come in them.
Fantastic engine - loved the one I had in my '90 Toyota pickup... but really all it did well was be bulletproof. No spectacular numbers anywhere. Even the Nissan 2.4L at the time made more HP/Tq.
Can't expect people who don't know anything about engines to value proper race engines fitted to regular cars. I would say under-rated but they are very highly rated rally engines.
I was expecting the c20xe in this list not that im a fan of vauxhall or opel but i like the hp number with this engine after i was reading about it a while ago
Truck engines are generally aggressively detuned. This is what allows them to haul seriously heavy loads for hundreds of thousands of miles while only needing routine maintenance. Sport cars and utility trucks are very different beasts, with very different use cases and tuning. You're making an apples to oranges comparison
zoufmalade zoufmalade The one fitted in the Caldina GT-T is a 3S-GTE not a 3S-GE. It's turbocharged and has only 256hp (1hp more than a ST205 WRC). The Caldina GT-Fours' 3S-GTE produces 260hp.
You really dont know much about these engines. My unit has 250k on clock and 18 eayrs old, it has never been open nothing failed only maintenance, runs like new. Those engins on stock part can handle up to 400hp. Considering that stock makes 150-180 its a lot. As galingong said its well known that they're bulletproof.
The Saab b207 engine was pretty damn good. it pushed more HP than a couple of these easily. A modified b207 was what was used in the Chevy Cobalt SS, aka the fwd car that can beat the GTR when tuned right. Great mileage and amazing power output.
Mercedes m111, saab b204, cosworth yb, peugeot xu, audi bam, Suzuki k9 this lust could go on and on there have been some amazing 4 pots over the last 20 years
I thought the C20LET would’ve been up on this list too. Redtops have powered so many fast Vauxhall’s through the years and many other things besides but everyone hates Vauxhall so it isn’t likely to be included on any list :(
Being a mechanic and seeing varied issues and what not. Where is the vauxhall c20let. Turbo 160v. The rover k series. More power to engine weight of any car of the time. 160 ps from a vvc unit you can carry with your bare hands. And last but not least the long lasting ford based cosworth 2.0 unit found in export and rs500 alike. Absolute iconic. If u wanted to include the Scrooby who chews gaskets and rattles cranks out at 30 k then congratulations
J Anything you can hit 250 whp with stock internals. By that time all you need are some evo heads. You have yourself a 460 hp engine. By that time other upgrades are obviously needed to the car but the engine itself it’s pretty sweet
No, it wasn't. It made a lot of peak horsepower for its displacement, but that has no real value. It was an engine that lacked usable power and had to be rung out just to make the power of a typical larger displacement engine that spins at a comfortable RPM. Beside that, because it was so high-revving, it was a terribly inefficient. That's why Honda S2000s were terrible sellers.
In my opinion the 381hp 2.0 four cylinder engine from AMG (A45, CLA 45) should have made the list... as far as I'm conserned it has the highest HP to litre ratio from a production car
I agreed to that and i been told the next version of this engine is gonna get 400 HP or maybe even more. That is a lot of power from a 2 liter 4 banger.
yes i know. If i remember correct it has a output of around 270 HP per liter, but i dout this engine gonna last 300K miles. But this video is all about 4 bangers and that is why i only meantied 4 banger.
The AMG 2.0 Turbo has tons of problems if i recall correctly. Plus as the other said, the Evo VIII FQ-400 and Evo X FQ 440 have better specific outputs as well anyway
Saab Trionic 5 Engine. Forged crank and rods from factory, and reinforced pistons. It can easily run 500whp+ without breaking. Usually you run a Trionic 5 bottom end with a Trionic 7 head gasket, (trionic 7 is a newer engine and its head gasket is unbreakable almost) and also trionic 5 cams since they are a bit sharper. You have to lathe the pistons if you are to use a trionic 7 head gasket. But T5 bottom end with T7 head gasket, and also T7 injection, you can go up to 700hp without aftermarket parts and ECU. You might need to get some harder valve springs but other than that you have an awesome 2 liter turbocharged engine! A mix of a B205R engine and B204
A lot of engines missing, C20XE, K series, B series, ae86 4A-GE, old Volkswagen/Audi 1.8l engines from a3 for example... But it's ok to miss some of them, but twin spark from alfa romeu? Not in this world
@@kavajamusic5411 The variator needs to be changed after approx 200K, but beside that its a pretty good engine if properly taken care of. If you cant live with the built in oil consumption by design (not to be mistaken for bad tolerances) it obviously not an engine for you :)
200.000km! You`r fucking dumb. At the Fiat, they say it`s to be changed after 20.000 km. That is the worst engine ever, compared to japan and german engine, it`s like shit and chocolate.
4age that's in my 1990 geo prism 6 years no oil change no added oils bad winters and hot summers still started up till the day I change the oil and it died 😂
Cannot believe you didn’t include the Kseries engine. Lightweight, powerful for its size. Powering legends such as the defender, mg TF and lotus Elise s1 amongst many others
i know this is about engines from 20 years ago but my fav 4bang was and is the 22RE-Fi by toyota. not in terms of performance but the sheer ability to keep going with nothing but the basic maintenance . rip my 88 toyota pick up. the engine lasted longer than the frame.
All versions of the 3SGE engine made during the 90's were arguably the greatest 4 cylinder engines ever made. Their motorsport pedigree is legendary. They should have put the gen 5 one in the last 2nd gen (or even 3rd gen) MR2's though.
YoLoCaT Yeah the B207R Ecopower were known as the ultimate sleepers, they made alot more power than what they were advertised at. Not a Suburu engine by any degree but basically the same as the Ecotec 2.0 but with a turbo and not supercharged.
B234R should be on this list. 225 HP and 342 Nm from factory and the block is good for a lot more. Heck, even the B204E I have can take 225 HP without issues if I wanted it to with a stage 1 kit (add the magnetic turbo valve from an L or R engine and reflash the ECU using free open source software). Trionic 5 is a seriously underrated engine management system, just like the SAAB DI ignition system.
I'm an Alfisti so I'm glad to see the TS, but I really think that the C20XE should have made the list. Used in the Opel Kadett GSi 16v and variations of it was used by Chevrolet as late as 2012 I think in the WTCC cars.
Obviously you have a preference for Japanese engines or maybe the only ones you know about. You missed the B205 and B235 from SAAB those are legendary engines that are tunable to more than 480 BHP properly done. Even though the engines had reputation of oil and coolant leaks that does not diminishes their capability and power...just watch the Nordic Tunng videos to get a taste.
Richard Allenbach ever actually worked on one? You might change your tune. You're entitled to your opinion but there's a reason they went out of business.
