One important point about Saturn 3 was that it was written by British novelist Martin Amis. His experiences in writing the movie made their way into his novel "Money". The portrayal of one aging actor in the novel caused legal action between Kirk Douglas and Amis. It is very funny though.
DUDE! thank you for doing this. all these lists you are putting out are epic. i truly appreciate all the time and dedication you are putting in to each one. it shows your passion and love for these movies.🙏🏽💙🤘🏽
Wait, what? Sci-fi? I clicked on this assuming it was the next episode in the other '80s project, but you're doing sci-fi too? We are blessed, and you are a glutton for punishment. Long may it continue.
I really hope your viewership numbers are up on the 80’s Project series, cause I absolutely love it and hope it continues on for quite some time. Great work and an excellent series.
What a wonderful surprise! A sci-fi edition of the 80:s project! Already in the first episode we get some hidden gems that I didn't know about. Thank you, Josh!
I know! Josh gets to fashion a hobby into a job. I mean, let's not forget all the hard work he puts into these videos to make them look so much better than a lot of the other stuff on RU-vid. And he's clearly not having any fun when he's turning Fair Use placards. 😂 But yeah, he's lucky and his passion comes through for us all to enjoy.
Oh wow, always hoped to have a sci fi version of the 80s Project but never expected you to do it at the same time as the horror one! You are awesome Josh!!
After seeing what passes for sci-fi and movies these days, I have started collecting late 70s and 80s sci-fi, as well as some horror, movies. They truly made magic back then!
WHOA!! Now you're doing Sci-Fi films of the '80s, too??? You're taking on quite the Herculean task here, my friend!!! It's probably gonna take several years for you to finish both of these!!
@@dankeplace release dates were different in other countries also there was an 80s telly series of the day of the triffids and there was also but l may be mistaken a quartermass or maybe someone can tell me the right name ( people were drawn to football stadiums and something happened to the people burnt alive or beamed somewhere not sure but was in the 80s
Saturn III is literally my childhood scary movie. I think watching it on laser disc as a child by myself did something. My mum didn’t monitor these things back then
I once read Lathe of Heaven had a lot of issues not least the original reels of film were rescued from a fire. What remains has been pieced together. Amazing concept.
These 80s project videos are superb. Probably the thing I look forward to appearing on RU-vid more than anything - and there's a lot of decent stuff out there.
You are absolutely right...the Boba Fett action toy did not have a launchable missile. The toy that caused a child to choke that did have one was the Viper ship toy from Battlestar Galactica; that is the incident people are mis-remembering. Both the Viper & the Cylon Raider had them and these toys were pulled from the market as a result, retooled and re-released, but given the bad publicity, never sold exceptionally well afterwards.
Yay for Forbidden Zone. Absolutely love that film, as problematic as it might be in places. But the insanity and how much it’s a Fleischer cartoon in real life is just amazing. Also great soundtrack
Like everyone else, when I saw the 80s project thumbnail, I was expecting the next chapter in the horror project, not a whole new project. Now you've got 20 years of work ahead of you. Respect.
I have considered doing this very thing myself in watching all the 1980's SF films that I could find. Thanks for providing a check list and pointing out the ones worth seeking and watching.
Growing up on a different continent gave me a 80s sci-fi experience that was very different and as much as l was starve of content to watch I’m grateful I didn’t have to endure most of these titles.
OK, I should have waited until the end. I have in fact seen all of these, and saw about half in the theater when they came out. I have a soft spot for Galaxina, viewing it more like a Dark Star. And yes, of course Empire is above everything on your list, but for me, Forbidden Zone is actually pretty close; it's such an amazing work.
I remember watching part of The Lathe of Heaven as a child back in 1980. I could never remember the name, just the plot about his dreams changing reality and his attemp to overcome racism leading to a world where everyone had gray skin. Now I finally have a name.
I can't wait untill you start on the years 1984 and up to 1989 wich had the best thriller and horror movies ever made. This 80's project is great, keep up the good work,so many movie treasures out there to tell about.I realy enjoy watching this, thank you for a nice job done so far.
Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie of them all it has great action great acting good directing and a great script and also one of the best plot twist ever I give Empire Strikes Back a 5/5 I still love it and I will watch it again when I do a Star Wars Marathon in the future when they end the Mandalorion and the other shows that they are doing to continue the Skywalker Saga on the Small screen.
It's maddening that the unaltered SW trilogy isn't widely available, but at least Empire is the best of the Special Editions. It's the only one of them I'll willingly watch.
Empire is marred by the writers turning Han from cranky and irascible in the original to a creepy jerk in the second, but the Dagobah scenes are brilliant. Saturn 3 was yet another lost opportunity. It could have been a compelling Heavy Metal-ish yarn but it was undermined by standard Hollywood chaos and incompetence and an unprofessional cast (except Farrah). Puma Man is definitely one of the best MST3K episodes ever.
Regarding Lathe of Heaven: So PBS (being originally a government off-shoot) never has to pay royalties to actors or musicians, so home video rights are difficult for them.
There was a movie that I can't remember the name of, that had a human body in a hotel on outskirts that looked warped and pulsating, a survivor was outside when a small bug creature burst from a person nearby, and lands on the windscreen of a car, this takes place at night. I thought the movie was called Mutant but I was wrong, so I'm kinda hoping somebody recalls it, I know the info is vague given how many movies like this were made. What I do also recall, victims of the bug, alien in nature seemed partially alive, and it was two men who survived I believe, travelled from one location to another, that's it, so if anyone can come up with name/s, please let me know 🙏 P.S, this was an American movie.
so anything that has any horror in it will go in the regular Project. any of the genre films with no horror elements will go here, so the straight sci-fi or superhero stuff. giant monsters will also be here, instead of horror.
I liked Saturn 3. It was no Star Wars. And now that I know some of the background, I understand why it wasn't a better movie. It was one of those movies that you watch, and feel like it was more of a scene of a larger movie. It was meant to be a larger movie, but the writer/director/producer wasn't inspired to do more. I'll give you an analogy/example, remember the scene in Jaws where the three main characters were in the boat, talking about their scars? Imagine that scene was made into a movie, and that's it. It was a fascinating scene, but you felt you wanted more. You never saw the shark, or the town, or anything beyond what you saw.
Okay, I am sad for this, but The Empire Strikes Back when it came out, was the sequel to Star Wars, and the original 1980 theartrical version was released as a wide screen special feture a few years ago, and that is the only version of this film that I watch. And as far as my favorite, of course Empire
Pumaman is a work of genius. If only Pleasance could say it correctly. Weird Saturn3 is like a clone if Singing in the Rain. Don't be so hard on Gamera they were out of money. Not they were classics before it came out.
It's not just about watching them, I collect on BR or UHD, sometimes I have no choice but to get the DVD, these movies are sometimes rare and hard to find,
The 80s Project hopefully will avoid my biggest frustration with the In Search Of .... series, which was never spending enough time on the films and having so many talking heads
I love The Forbidden Zone. I discovered this movie after falling in love with Oingo Boingo. The movie definitely comes across as a fever dream but that adds to its charm.
I remember listening to a podcast with Richard Elfman being interviewed about the Forbidden Zone and he talks about how he got attacked for the character of Mr. Bernstein (the money changer). Apparently that character was played by his grandfather and that's actually just how he acted in real life. I can't help but laugh at that.
Between 1981 and 1980 you have reviewed a couple of my favorite horror movies the rest I have never heard of and to be honest they seem quite silly to me and probably won't hold my attention
You should do a review of the movie Mission Stardust. It was released in 1967, but it's an interesting movie that makes a nice second feature after watching Galaxina.
Sweet! Josh has his schedule filled out for him for a while with the Sci-Fi and Horror 80's projects. Also, Josh, can we get the chapters on these like are in the Horror ones?
I used to have Alien 2 on VHS tape but it wasn't released here in the UK as Alien 2, it was called Alien Terror. So nobody over here knew about the controversy of it ripping off Alien. I remember the scene with the little girl at the beginning and the deserted bowling alley with the alien in it at the end, really freaking me out as a kid.....I re watched it a few years back and....Yeah....Not so much lol
Have you thought about doing a side by side comparison of Galaxina and The Creature Wasn’t Nice (1981)? They are so similar in tone and style and what they were trying to do…
Cool. Maybe I'll see that one scifi movie from the 80's that I saw on HBO with the monster on the ship and the naked woman with the boobs. All I remember from the show but that part is etched in my head like the naked lady from The Vanishing Point on the motorcycle. Tried to google it a few times but this is the most 80's scifi all in one place I've ever seen. I haven't heard of a lot of these and some of the others are ones I thought I was the only who remembered. Cool.
I really need to check out that little Indie film you were talking about at the end of the video. This here Stir Wears: The Umpire Stroked Out. Sounds like a cool movie. Probably not as cool as Galaxina or Alien 2 though. Those were the true goliaths of 1980. 😂😂😂😂
Thank you Joshua Spiegel for not making me watch stupid “premium” ads. From now on, I will like your videos. I already watch everything you do so it doesn’t matter to me. Unless i’m imposed premium ads I cannot skip. Call me stupid. I use an Xbox Series X for youtube. Try ad blocker on Xbox. Thank you for what you do Josh.
