Welcome to the AARPG’s first installment of Playing With Myself, a look at Solo Play and Twilight 2000 4th Edition. In Part 1, your co-host Matt will take a deeper look at the Shift Mechanic and how characters in Twilight can spend their days just trying to get enough food and water to survive. It will follow a single day for four notional basic characters and walk through many of the different tasks your characters can perform during a shift.
The rolls are real and the outcome is less than stellar for the four hapless survivors but their struggle is a very real possibility for any group of characters that are trying to survive the harsh and unforgiving world of Twilight 2000

Thank you for watching and the kind feedback. Glad it was of use. I am way behind schedule but do have plans for more of these in the future. Are there any topics or aspects of the game you might have questions about?

I hope this series keeps up. This has been a HUGE help! most of the playthroughs online have been heavy role play. That's fine, but I want to really learn the crunch by example. Thank you.

Matt is working on a tutorial on explosions right now. Might do Artillery strikes next. Basically, all the things we had trouble with in our actual play. Haha. Is there any topic you’d like to see us cover? (Nathan)

Nicely done Matt. I think I was confused at first because you identified the dice bump after you rolled. I also did not connect that there were multiple terrain tables in the rulebook. I was very impressed by the presentation itself.

Thanks for the feedback, glad you liked it. I should have covered the terrain modifications chart (it was on the sheet, but I forgot), it would have better explained the bump for the roll. I put it all together using Camtasia, but Nathan made sure the sound was good.

@21:00 for solo play make the cooking roll AFTER they eat it. If bob fails then roll for stamina/possible food poisoning, etc.
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
You could definitely do it that way, makes total sense for solo play since there is no way to otherwise hide the outcome from yourself. Another great example of how this game system can provide surprise even when playing with ones self.

A good friend of mine has been running a TW2k4 game for us over the past couple months (every other Saturday) and he's doing a good job of learning the system, but I can't wait until he can see his way past all this crunch. 4th Ed is actually twice as crunchy as 1st Ed. There is so much die rolling going on I'm beginning to understand why I never played this game until my friend decided to run it.
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
We tried to do a lot of crunch at first as we were just learning the system, but I think there were times where Nathan handwaved some stuff or it was taken care of in roleplay. Some people (Matt here for one) appreciate a higher level of crunch, it's the physics, biology, and chemistry that make up a game world, the forces that push back when you try to do something crazy. And for solo play, critical if your looking for something to keep your own desire for success at bay. But as always, it is a discussion between the GM and players to find the mix that is right for your group.

Great video and very helpful. The water rules seem a bit silly, IMO. Seems to me the test should be finding water. If you do then you can simply fill up whatever container you have. Doesn't seem thematic to find a great source of fresh water, but then only able to get 1 unit from it. The finding food and hunting make perfect sense. But not the water. If you were foraging in a store, then sure, you found perhaps one unopened bottle of water. But with a river, it's fresh or it's not. :)
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
Yeah I hand-waved some of that when I ran “Always Cloudy…”. But I do like “resource scarcity” as a mechanic.
@carpma11
@carpma11 2 года назад
I think it would be a no-brainer house rule that a body of water in a grid equals automatic success "finding water" especially if you're not worrying about whether the water is potable or not.
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
So i actually agree, if there is a river, you ought to be able to collect water from it. We also kind of fudged it once because normally, unless you are no where near a body of water, you should be able to transport as much water as you can carry. In one shift we just all gave our canteens to one person to go fill. Not that a single canteen of water is enough for a whole day, but we sort of treated it like that. Another house rule, or one that I just have not read much on is temperature and water. Does water intake needs go up when the weather gets really hot? In my own experience, when I have had the fun of living outdoors in hot climates, I drank a ton of water.

Just got into this series. Amazing how FL achieved to expand upon the YZ engine in order to simulate the more complex spirit of the original editions. Although I've never played the original, the FL games I've played so far turned me into a fanboy. Good job!

We really like the system as well and some of the mechanics that seem to weave a thread through many of their games (namely stress, pushing, and the open, hex-crawl feel). We also highly recommend the Aliens rule set as well and although I (Matt) have not played Coriolis, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the lore and play rules.

@@theaarpgs I like solo play because I can run the adventures I wanted. Being a gm you don't always get to. I did homebrew a feature where if you have a camp you need to gather units of wood and the base number of units is dependent on the season and weather
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
That is a pretty cool homebrew. Did you basically fold it under the forage mechanic? I know even on fun family camping overnights, one job for the kids is always get out there and forage me some sticks to get the fire going.
@johnlocke9091
@johnlocke9091 2 года назад
@@theaarpgs It is a separate roll using the foraging rules. I used it for stationary camps such as people going to hold out for several weeks. The units of wood is dependent of weather and number of people. Fall 1 unit wood, Winter 1 1/2 unit, Jan Feb 2 units spring 1 unit, summer 1/2 unit. Plus 1 unit for every 6 people because you need larger fire.

Nathan here. The hunting table is on pg 147 in the player’s guide. Rabbit is in there. Thanks for watching!
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
oooo if you do an expanded hunting table please share. I thought the list was very limited as well, especially when you consider not only normal animals that you would expect to find in a part of the world, lets not forget all the critters in the zoos that may have found themselves a new home in the apocalypse.
@abstractbybrian
@abstractbybrian Год назад
It’s odd to me that if there is a river to fish from then you shouldn’t have to forage for water. Finding water should be automatic. I guess you could roll for an aquatic encounter with a very low chance of having one. But getting water and boiling it, I guess you could roll for starting a fire etc.
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs Год назад
you are correct, this is something I got wrong (hehe, you are not the first to notice), I would agree, you should only need to forage for water when there is not an obvious water source. I think the only reason you might forage for water with an obvious source is if you had concern about the water itself. When I was a kid, my uncle would take me with his friends camping, we normally boiled any water from streams and such, but we would search uphill for small water springs just coming out of the ground and drink from them without boiling.

Seem like too much rolling to set up a camp
@theaarpgs
@theaarpgs 2 года назад
So just setting up a camp is a single survival role, but yes, they way I read it was if you want to make your camp difficult to spot, the second role is needed. As with any rule, it is up to the GM and players to work out what they want to abstract and what they want to crunch on.
