Toni, my 90 year old mother was working on a throw twelve years ago when she suddenly had open heart surgery. The incomplete throw went into a bag and this month my mom rediscovered her unfinished project BUT she forgot how to do the stitch. She is a visual learner and the written book she had was simply, now, confusing. She described what the stitch was and I went searching through RU-vid. This lovely video of yours popped up, I sat her in front of my computer and I FF to the first row. She had two AH-HA moments, remembered what she forgot, and bounced into her sitting room. I went on to watch a few vlogs I had in my watch list when she burst back into my room with the project and showed me four NEW ROWS she completed that were identical to the previous rows created over twelve years ago. To tell you the truth, there are not many ways to make a 90 year old woman happy, BUT YOU DID. THANK YOU!

I love how you explain the "why's". I'm a why person- like why do you only pull thru 1 loop on the 1st chain, then 2 for the remainder... the why's help me to understand and actually learn vs memorizing...you explained many why's and i appreciate it. Keep up the great tutorials!!!

Have you ever tried to learn something, you buy books, you watch video's and it just never sinks in. Then one day, you come across a yarn review. The reviewer is so good, so entertaining, you subscribe to her channel as you feel like you are sitting with a friend and she is talking directly to you. Her smile is infectious, and you cant help but smile too. You watch her make these lovely swatches. Tunisian crochet! The one stitch that you just could not pick up from books, from other videos, this wonderful lady shows you in and a few minutes, you too can now do it!! I can not thank you enough, this is something I have been trying to learn for a long time and just couldn’t get. Your teaching skills? Perfection and just what I needed. I cant tell you how tickled I am to now be able to do this. I plan on watching the rest of this videos so I can pick up the variations and different patterns. You made my day, my week, my month! :)

I have taken regular crochet in person classes and tried to learn on RU-vid. It has been very frustrating as the teachers will do 3-4 slow stitches and then whip through the rest of the row. Here, the teacher for Tunisian Crochet goes slow on each row and talks through what she is doing for each stitch. What an amazing experience! Being successful immediately is very rewarding.

Back in the day I got frustrated with Tunisian because of that "curl" -- first time I heard that one should go up a couple of hook sizes. Did that and had way less curl on my swatch. Can't wait to check out more of Tunisian stitch videos. (Though I'd better do it when I haven't been drinking red wine...)

@Lisa Conaway People get knitting and crocheting wrong all of the time. I do both. I started off learning how to knit. People said I crocheted. It's crazy how people get them confused. People who knit or crochet even know how something was made. Regular people just call it one or the other.

My grandmother grabbed so much yarn and hooks thinking she'd get into crocheting and knitting and never did. She found out I got into it and gave me a bunch of stuff like bags and bags of yarn and hooks and one is a Tunisian crochet hook and I started squealing lol she had no idea how happy I would get. I've been really low on money(couldn't afford my hobby) and I've never had a Tunisian crochet hook I was about to cry. She was saying that if she knew I would get so happy she would have waited for Christmas cuz she doesn't know if she could top that 😂😂

Thank you so much for this. I tried learning Tunisian a couple decades ago and it always curled so tight I ended up with tubes that were also slanted somehow. No one ever said "go up two hook sizes" nor did they point out to use the side stitch instead of the final top loop. I still have the hooks I bought two decades ago. I've been holding onto them because, you know, they ARE crochet hooks and I always told myself 'someday'. Now that I have watched this video of yours I truly feel that someday is finally here. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am excited to try again.

Thank you! Years ago, 35 or so, I inherited my mom's collection of knitting needles and crochet hooks. There was one odd item that I never understood. It looked like a knitting needle with a crochet hook on the end. I kept it but never used it. A couple of months ago, while browsing crochet videos, this one caught my eye. That odd hook/needle was in the photo! I watched the video, got that hook out and tried Tunisian crochet! Since then, I've subscribed, watched many of your videos, and even bought a set of Tunisian crochet hooks. It's my new favorite craft. Thanks for solving the mystery and for being such a great teacher!

Lady, where have you been all my life???? My grandmother taught to crochet decades ago…..I do not know who taught her, but she was amazing. I have never forgotten her (of course) or crochet. I’ve dabbled over the years. The one thing she never said, were the names of things. She would just teach me how to do it. Even the names of hooks (Tunisian) ??? What??? Just got back into crochet, because I retired and you popped up on my RU-vid today. Oh my, oh, my……..thank you. I feel like I just got home.

I never tried Tunisian crochet before I saw your set of videos. Toni, thank you for a wonderfully clear video. I think what makes the difference, at least for me, is the obvious respect that you show for your students. Some other teachers slow things down, but leave us with the feeling that they consider us idiots that need to be talked down to. Not only do you explain the "why" of things, but you are also able to predict the kind of questions that naturally arise in the minds of intelligent beginners. You project a kind confidence that we will be able to learn this new [to us] way of crocheting [logic without condescension]. Of course it is not a new style: the afghans made in the 18th century testify to that.

Your tutorial was absolutely delightful to watch! You explained very thoroughly without constantly “croaking” your voice like a lot of people tend to do, so I thank you for that. I’ve wanted to know about Tunisian crochet for some time and felt very daunted by it with all the pics of alllll those loops on one hook. Not so daunted anymore thanks to you! 🙂 My favorite line: “Look at you! You’re the best!” 🥰🥰🥰

Super simple to follow! just made a bookmark with this (decreased the base rows to make it thinner, and worked it long enough to be a bookmark) and im super happy with it. I have it wet blocking right now, looking forward to taking it off and seeing it all done!

I'm learning to do Tunisian Crochet today. I've been crocheting for over 20 years now, and I've had my Knit Picks Interchangeable Crochet Hooks for over 4 years, but I'm just attaching the cables today and going to try to tackle the Alum Bay Shawl by Sharon Carter (yarnimals on Ravelry) A few things I love about your video: 1) Your smile. You channel your enjoyment and happiness visually through your face, and it's contagious. 2) Your voice quality and your audio. I don't know what you use for your camera and sound, but it's working very well. Your voice is soothing, your instructions clear, and there's not background noise distracting from what you're doing. 3) You are extremely easy to follow. You know what you're saying so you don't trail off or make mistakes; you explain why things are done the way they're done; you keep your yarn, hands, and hook all very well within the frame so nothing is ever not visible; your choice of background is extremely conducive to helping to be able to see the individual threads of even your very lightly colored yarn.

I am strictly a knit only person, crochet in general has always scared me because of the tension. I came upon Tunisian crochet while browsing instagram, and I love that it kinda looks like knitting. I got to say, your video is perfect! I am excited to try this technique and I love all your positivity! I feel proud of myself already and I haven't even tried it! Thank you!!!! 💓

What a great tutorial. You have a way of making it look easy. So much so that I have now ordered some Tunisian hooks and am going to try your smock stitch pillow cover video. Wish me luck. I'm a crocheter so it shouldn't be too much of a change for me. Thank you so much for the inspiration. You rock!

Toni you are so helpful!!!! I am a relatively new crocheter. I've been crocheting everyday for about a year and wanted to try something new for a different look. I was so confused reading a book about this stitch but this video made things so easy. Thank you especially for going over the anatomy of the stitch and where to go in for the next stitch. - super helpful.

I watched your video once, then started an experimental swatch of my own. Your explanation was perfect. I too love how you went over every detail. It was easy to do from memory! I'm afraid I found a few favorite stitch. I'll have to keep swatching and playing though. My tension inconsistencies really show with this method. Darn tension!!! 😅

Goodness, Toni, you are so good at teaching this! You clearly love doing it. Your verbal instructions are absolutely clear, including the way you anticipate your students' questions! Your camera work is amazing and both your voice instructions and the visuals make learning this SO easy! I am an experienced crocheter, but I very much want to learn this new technique and you're making it so easy! I ordered a set of hooks to get started with and, as with my Tulip hooks, I will undoubtedly find favorites as I get more experienced with Tunisian. Thanks again for being so clear and patient!
