A company called SCADA Intl from Taiwan are producing this sort off forks.

Why it was discontinued was because travel got longer than 80mm. Also, it can be a terrific chassis and light, but damping technology and reliability are equally important (where C-dale has always had issues with their tech). That said, this would be perfect for fat-bikes.

How did i miss this. Old fat dude getting in shape. Lost 50 lb so far. Still 300. Love riding. Road and some minor trails. Looking at losing my junk rockshock for some better cushioning. Im on a trek 3900 mountain bike. Love the frames solid feel. Need some help picking the right fork. Maybe get one used one of these and reshock it? Straight tube 1 1/8

I don't know why they stopped developing this fork design. It seemed to make so much sense. I really wanted an F800 back in the day.

The Lefty solved all mentioned issues. That said, around the same time they stopped making the Fatty they also stopped manufacturing the booted Lefty, so now Lefty's have the stiction and stanchion wear same as all the other forks. There still is some stiction to overcome on the booted design, from air piston and damper seals, but it is much much less.

Thanks for the great video. I have a cannondale bad boy with a fatty fork and got cheap as the damper seals were shot. I bought a couple spare dampers, cannondale tools for repair, and the revised improved damper seals. Now i have a great bike for a bargain, know how to repair forever, and a spare damper. Just went on a very rough gravel road and am always happy to have the suspension not be in my wrists. Likely not a great idea but am thinking this would be a cool bike for touring vietnam where the roads are famous for potholes and gravel. Carrying the spare cartridge and tools.... hahahaha.

I had a 2001 F700, and as you say, the stiffness was absolutely. The only problem is the high stack of the design, for the rest, a great design.

Unicrown construction certainly prevents unsynchronised blade compression and having needle bearings is pretty neat. The design is clever, but it never really came to fruition. I have a Headshok on a Silk Path frame, considering a drop bar conversion but the reboumd isn't what it used to be and the travel was only about an inch to start with. You have to love those severely angled stems they came with; "hey, the headtube is a little higher on this bike than it is on other bikes, do you want a 30° rise stem or a 30° drop? If neither of those works, you're basically hosed!"

Coming from a motocross background it always bothered me how mountain bike forks were set up with the one side a spring and the other side the damper. I was saying to myself how does the front axle not snap in half. Nice idea sickbiker!

I was watching/listening to a podcast recently talking about ideal Roubaix racing options, they where talking about suspension forks not having aero fork options etc... my brain just went to this... the fork would easily be able to be made into an aero road shape and still give active suspension something... even back in the 90's the headshock made so much sense, as suspension travel increased I understand why it went out... but I'd love to see something like this come to gravel

Of course when Cannondale was sold off to Dorel in 2008, the downwards spiral started. Also the manufacturing and later design moved as well in 2010. The only target is profit, not engineering. Now everything comes from Taiwan, hence the reason that "Cannondale" looks like every other similar bike.
@Aramigo123
@Aramigo123 4 года назад
The headshok stuff has been getting phased out since the move to China manufacture started in 2009 or so. Perhaps they cannot produce them as efficiently there? Sad that there is no longer the option on newer Cannondales. It defined the brand in the 90s and 00s.

I have just got a cannon dale f1000 with the fatty fork. I ride rigid forks usually but I like the fatty alot. Its really light, takes the edge off the bumps. I'm 195-200 lbs and its good for me. I have not tried jumping it but its a bit soft and I'm sure I would bottom it as I can now just by weight distribution. But I like it alot!

Is possible replace head shock with fork suspension ?
@evanbarnes9984
@evanbarnes9984 4 года назад
Yes, it should be, with a bit of work. First, you need to find a new fork that matches a few measurements on your head shock, specifically the axle-to-crown height and the offset. This will preserve the geometry of your bike. Then, you may also need to get a new set of headset bearings. Most modern forks use a tapered steerer tube that is 1.5" diameter at bottom, and 1.125"at top, whereas the headshox uses (I think, not 100% sure) a slightly oversized steeerer tube that's straight and slightly larger than 1.5" diameter the whole way up. So you definitely need a different headset. I don't know what travel length fork you could put on as a replacement, but that will be constrained by the axle-to-crown height. Also make sure to get a fork that matches your hub, so non-boost 100mm or boost 110mm width, with the appropriate axle type, like 10mm QR skewer or 15mm thru axle. Good luck!

I am inspired by your channel content and have a project bike that I recently purchased. It just so happens that my project bike is a late 90s Canondale f400 with a fatty shock. The shock is blown ( I didn’t know at the time) and I would like to replace it because it seems the replacement inner components are near impossible to find. Can anyone recommend a reasonable fork to replace the Fatty with? It looks like I would need a reducer?
@justanalias
@justanalias 2 года назад
Right above the front tire and under the shock is there a Schrader valve? If so look up the Cannondale specs for air pressure and fill it. I needed a little over 100 PSI being a 200 lb rider. I recently bought a c-dale bad boy Ultra with this Fork thinking the fork was blown but it just needed some air in it.

How much of a standard suspension fork's twisting is because there is a shock on one side and damper on the other? If the answer is "a lot", would it make sense to put half the spring and half the damping in each leg so they are balanced? Each leg's spring/damper would only have to do half as much as before, and if a channel allowed whatever air was used to equalize, balance would appear to be no problem.

Impossible to fit 29 wheels or longer travel that's why it's dead. You can still find similar design on touring bike. New SID 35 is just super sensitive and stiff enough IMHO.

Magura makes the best cartrage and damaging unite for this great fork! I still have two of them and they work great 👍 The biggest problem was the hight of the head tube. When things went to 100mil of travel it created a lot of geometry problems. Just look at some of the steams Tinker used on his bike! This was the biggest problem with this design. And why the lefty came to life. Yes they had issues but were still lighter and stiffer than most of the forks available at that time. The otcho fork now is just crazy it finally has the right amount of pre load and compression with the great stiffness! As a matter of fact they had take out some of the stiffness on the new fork. The fatty was ahead of its time and won many championships!

You'd need a bike with the right diameter headtube. But it's a great idea. I have a 30mm travel version on my 20 year old Cannondale XS800 cyclocross bike which I run on and off road. Works great! Feels great! My next bike will be a Cannondale Slate with a lefty oliver fork. The only reason to change is to run discs (my bike has rim brakes) and save 2-3 kgs in weight.
