Hi @Xris, thank you for taking the time to create this video about our Lunar. First of all, We apologize for any confusion we caused the last time we were commenting. In regards to your question at 2.11, as Tony mention in their comment, we recommend using the rubber heat pad that comes packed with the scale. The heat pad can be flipped up to level the portafilter so it does not spill any grounds (and for some users, not having the experience of metal on metal). You can tell the difference as the 'lip' of the pad will face up. The Pearl Model S, along with our other scales, all have their main focuses on what they are best suited to within a commercial or home environment. The Pearl series are all directed towards pour-over brewing and portafilter use (we also recommend using a heat-resistant pad with all in this series). The Lunar is built with the intention of espresso machine brewing (based on its tailored modes) but can also be used for pour-over manual brewing in the dual-display mode. Different materials have different desirable properties and also set products apart from each other visually. We are also happy to discuss this more with you!
It may have been worth touching on exactly how responsive, accurate, and fast this scale is. That was a tremendous factor when I was considering purchasing the Lunar.
To put the debate to rest, I spoke w/ Andrew Meo (recently retired) who was the owner/chief operator of Rocket and he said absolutely start your timer once you lift the lever and actuate the pump. There you have it. And it’s a major upgrade from the Appartamento to the Mozzafiato! Start saving since the Mozzafiato had a recent price increase.
Great review. I would be surprised if they updated the lunar since the just released it in white a few months back. Also if you didn't know you can remove modes on your scale. If you find yourself using 2 modes you can take the rest of so you don't have to cycle through that made it a lot better for me.
Excellent video bro! Actually I have a Gaggia classic pro (with PID) and a niche zero grinder. You made a really good perspective video. What do you think about the accuracy of your past scale is the same accuracy than this lunar scale? Thanks!
Good review, I have the pearl and just treated myself to the ECM Synchronica for Christmas. I started with espresso four years ago with a Gaggia classic pro and I bought a ECM grinder as I knew I would eventually get a higher end espresso machine once I had learned the ropes. I think the new lunar will work well because I like their products as well as the slim low profile. It will sit nicely on my drip tray. Thanks for the good review.. What do you think about the Mahlkonig E 65 GWB grinder? Expensive but I like the grind by weight and faster prep time, plus I think it will outlive me.
Great video! Left a subscription. And btw. I really think about buying the lunar as I have upgraded my machine to a Lelit Bianca, Eureka mignon specialita grinder, VST baskets aso. The only two things missing is a good scale and a single dose grinder (this will be the niche zero somewhere in the future).
Good honest review and absolutely it is way overpriced BUT like you found, if it is a daily use item that brings simplicity to your routine and removes some niggles from your workflow then it is worth paying the price. I can't help but think other manufacturers will have reverse engineered it and we will soon see some less than half price knockoffs that will have 90% of the functionality though. Acaia are the Apple of espresso weighing it seems
I bought a Pyxis a while ago. It was really the best fit size wise with my Flair Pro 2, and I believe it's the most sensitive scale on the market which I love. I ignore the smart features, and leave it on weigh/time mode and it's great. I don't regret my purchase at all.
Auto-Start Auto-Tare is super useful in a cafe setting where one might be working on a multi group head machine. Being able to pull 3 shots at a time and not needing to worry about starting timers or taring made the workflow much faster/ smoother.
@@itsxris Absolutely! I've also found the fact it is water resistant really helps. Also, you are right in your concern about the metal casing- I've seen them dropped and bent up. That sort of wear and tear gets expensive!
I have enjoyed all your videos. I am new to coffee and Espresso brewing. I was going to order the Lunar but did not because of your comment about a possible upgrade. What do you think of the Acaia Pyris. I will be using it on the Flair 58 and I have ordered The Smart Espresso Profiler and it needs an Acia scale for its app.
I actually think it has too many functions. It annoys me when I accidentally find myself on a different function than intended. However, it’s a beautiful thing and feel good to hold and to use. To borrow from Mary Kwan... it brings me joy.
Question! What type/brand tamping station is that in your set up? Looks nice. Also, what’s the espresso machine base you are using underneath it (to raise it up a bit)? Thanks! Great video.
Oh im angry alright. Angry at how unbelievably SENSIBLE you are!!! For real though I appreciate the reasoning for why and when buying this might make sense. When dealing with any luxury item it's never going to be a fully practical purchasing decision.
I’m still on the fence. Also kind of put off by the battery only lasting 3-5 years before having to send it back in somewhere for a new one at a cost. I’d want this thing to last forever without any hassle/expense once purchased. Hmmm, I’m just going to have to close my eyes one day and click “buy”. One of those purchases.
I'm looking for a scale now and this one looks to be the defacto standard. Wish it also had better build quality / design. All of the closeups show coffee grounds getting trapped between the display and the scale body itself. Functionally it seems to work and is well though out so they charge what they can. This is one of those cases where a competitor needs to step in with a better offering.
I have enjoyed mine. The responsiveness is what I was looking for. Do you need it? Of course not. But I don’t for a moment regret spending the money. I love the rubber heat shield. I flip it over to hold my bottomless portafilter up when I am weighing my dose.
Acaia Lunar is one of my best Investments 'for home' I love funktion there starts timer after first drip and actualy stops the timer again when shoot is finish, I already have shot timer build in in my machine, so my favorite shot's brew in 25 sec after first drop and total 35 sec, No other scale can do this ;-)
You can disable the modes you don’t use making the scale easier to use. It’s just done manually on the scale instead of the app. Acaia has a write up instructions. Also highly recommend using the rubber mat with them, gets rid of the metal to metal contact, adds grip to the cup.
Interesting - didn't know it could be removed on the scale, will need to look into it I have the rubber mat but didn't like how it looked 😅 got dirty quick, but yea it would remove the metal on metal contact
It‘s a great little scale that suits both espresso, aeropress and V60 preparation. It is fast and works well for what it is intended. However, the apps are for the bin. Would still buy it again, but I find it too highly priced.
The Acaia Lunar is definitely the scale that interest me more to fit under espresso machines when pulling shots, great review! Edit: "The Acaia Lunar" not "The Acaia Pearl S"
I'm SO tired of my scale sometimes going... backwards. No joke. Have to finish the shit, pick up the cup and reweigh the entire cup. I know what the cup weight is so doing some mental math I get to the amount extracted. Talk about mind blown. A scale that goes backwards...
@Xris, I think you were spot on with your conclusion. It is aimed at a commercial setting or for coffee enthusiasts that have already invested a ton on their coffee setup.
This really helped me realize I do not need an acai scale when I recently started investing in craft coffee, but I am currently trying to decide on a filter-specific brew grinder. Do you have any thoughts on whether the Fellow ode or the Eureka Mignon Filtro would be the better choice?
Not that it matters, but why do you pronounce it Loo-Nar with the emphasis on the "nar?" It's Lunar, with the emphasis on the "Lu." Like a lunar eclipse. You know, the moon?
Great review. I found a feature on my Pearl scale app where you can select a scale. It does not allow all of the features for the Lunar, but it is available. In app features were more of a novelty. I use both skills every day and rarely ever open the app. That’s just my experience. Agree on the shot timer. The brew starts when the water hits the coffee. My Rocket has a timer, so that has not been a problem. I enjoy your channel!!
It’s just rebranded alibaba stuff. Good? Sure. Worth the 10000% markup? Absolutely not. They charge an insane amount because they know people have already spent a ton of money and they feel good about buying a $250 scale
It's still way too overpriced for what it is. Not the best build, pretty well known for having quality control issues. But it is the only scale that comes with the features in the smaller form factor. The Lunar should cost around 50 dollars for what it does. In a commercial setting I have NEVER seen anyone use the app, so that whole point is bunk. Maybe for the setup initially, but the app is for home users. Hopefully, some enterprising Taiwanese or Chinese company can make a competitor at a lower price and loosen Acaia's grip on the market.
[ 4:45 ] Yeah man I feel that big time! It's really frustrating when I'm pulling shots behind the bar and I've accidentally touched button to cause it to switch out of the mode it was originally set to (esp. when there's a big rush). Like, please don't tare while the shot is pulling!! Though one thing to add, the scale is robust as hell from my experience. It has fallen from a distance of 5ft many, many times onto a tiled floor and it has surprisingly survived and kept chugging along. It has hella dents and scratches from being used in the shop so it's not as clean looking any more. Also, totally nitpicking here but, when are they going to make the switch to USB Type C? And could they add a rubber cover to the USB port just for added security when constantly using it in the shop?
