The Accelerated Dragon is one of the sharpest and most fun openings in chess. It’s unforgiving, and it gives you no room for mistakes. The side that manages to get an attack going faster is usually going to win the game.
If you are unfamiliar with the Sicilian Defense, I’d recommend the introductory video in which I covered the ideas for both sides as well as all most common theoretical lines briefly: • Sicilian Defense (intr...
Here are two games I played as white against the Accelerated Dragon. In the first one my opponent made a theoretical mistake early on and I managed to exploit it and convert easily. In the other one, I made a mistake but it went unpunished. Perhaps these two games could serve as an example of what can occur out of the opening: Tomic vs Bojanic • Accelerated Dragon fai...
Tomic vs Blaga • Push too hard and you ...
The opening occurs after the moves:
1.e4 c5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.d4 cxd4
4.Nxd4 g6 - the move g6 signifies the accelerated dragon. As opposed to the normal dragon, black wastes no time fianchettoing his bishop and castling kingside. White has three ways to react to this aggressive opening choice.
5.Nc3 is the main line
5.c4 is the Maroczy Bind variation, and the most solid way for white to look for an advantage
5.Nxc6 is the exchange variation and it’s probably the worse of the three for white. Black immediately gets a central pawn majority which can be useful in any endgame scenarios.
Players whose games you should study (for the black side): Magnus Carlsen (vs Morozevich, 2013; vs Caruana 2014), Vassily Ivanchuk (vs Leko 2007). There are many other, but I think these two can provide two completely approaches to the opening.

The reason to go for the a5 lines for black (after the Nc3 main line setup) is because going d6 is directly contradicting blacks plan from the beginning! The accelerated dragon allows you to "accelerate" the d5 pawn push which in almost ALL variations except for the Maroczy bind, black will play without losing a tempo with d6! Thus, the Yugoslav setup with f3 loses a lot of steam to simply d5!! Even in the a5 lines, black has already begun his pawn pushes which makes queenside casting much worse for white and therefore discourages the f3-g4-h5 pawn pushes inherent to the Yugoslav attack! By playing d6 before hand, you have simply reverted into the Yugoslav attack and must be prepared for a grueling attack from white! TLDR: play the a5 lines as black! They equalize easily, allow your d5 push, and take the steam out of the traditional Yugoslav attack
@sid5537
@sid5537 Год назад
that's what I also thought that playing d5 in one move is the main idea of Accelerated dragon

As with all your videos, this was excellent. Such interesting positions! Just one question, what happens if black forgoes the move d6 and attempts an early d5 break? The way I see it, and please I encourage anyone to correct me, playing d6 is too similar to the “regular” dragon lines (especially if white doesn’t play c4).
@marshallfarrier4732
@marshallfarrier4732 3 года назад
Thank you for the great video! As I've also been brushing up on the dragon and accelerated dragon, I wanted to mention that there's one move order where I think white gets good initiative by exchanging knights on c6, namely 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6, as in Timman-Korchnoi, Brussels 1991 (candidates qf). The tempo white gets by making the knight on f6 retreat gives black trouble in the opening.

5:07 - Why not king takes? The king on f6 is basically castled because he does not get in the way of the organic development - bishop to g7 and rook to e8, which is also a natural move behind the three central pawns.

I think it's a mistake for black to play an early d6 because you're allowing the Yugoslav Attack and black's main reason for playing the accelerated Dragon is to avoid the Yugoslav Attack. You don't go over positions where black gets to play d5 in one move.

Ok I checked it, and you only play d5 when white plays Pawn to f3 before developing the WB to c4. Otherwise the accelerated dragon also has d6 but delays it the way Stjepan did in the video. So this is the accelerated dragon...well of course it is.

Once d6 is played for Black it’s no longer an Accelerated Dragon. Also the Hyper Accelerated Dragon starts with 2.g6. The aim is to avoid the Rossilimo eg 1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5. In this variation white tries to take the knight on c6 with his bishop to double blacks pawns on the c-file. The Hyper Accelerated Dragon avoids this variation.

Qb3 Also 6.Bc4 0-0 7.Qd2 runs into 7._____ Ng4 which is not that great for white 6.Bc4 0-0 7.0-0 Black can play Nxe4 and then follow it by d5 and equalise Therefore 7.Bb3 is almost forced to fight for an advantage.

When you play d6, you transpose to the dragon variation, the whole point of the accelerated dragon variation is to push the d pawn 2 squares up to d5 all in one go instead of first playing d6 then d5 like in the dragon. So instead of playing d6 play d5.

As highlighted by some of the comments this video doesn't really talk to the spirit of the accelerated dragon, which is not to play d6. He goes into way too much detail on the Nc3 variation and doesn't address the idea of the opening at all (to play d5 in one move and hence stop white playing a Yugoslav set up). There are also some important sidelines such as 7. Qa5 or e6. His more recent videos are much better so this is really a sign of how far his RU-vid channel has come. But if you want to learn the accelerated dragon there are better resources - I'd recommend the free chessable course by Kamil Plichta which has 90 mins of video content included
