My great grandmother and great uncle knew Haigh well and said he was always friendly. They lived near his workshop in Crawley and he would often take care of my great grandmother's cat and would take it back to her if he saw it out at night. It was often joked in the family that it was lucky that they were penniless or they too would have been murdered. My great uncle said that Haigh was a regular at the local pub, and would always sit in the same place. After his crimes came to light, nobody would sit there and the empty seat was like a looming presence.

I recall a quote from someone who wrote about Haigh before saying along the lines of "if he hadn't tried to make out he was mad and just been himself, they would have found him insane."

There was a joke that Haigh helped increase the conviction rate while he was held while on trial as he would offer inmates 'legal advice' much of which was complete rubbish. He was also nicknamed 'Corpus delicti' as he believed that this meant that in order to be prosecuted, the police had to have a body. (Haigh misinterpreted 'Corpus' as literally meaning 'body' whereas it's meaning is more like 'Body' in 'Body of evidence'.)

Well I never... because John George Haigh was a story I was going to suggest be covered here! Something that may be of interesting; reporting of Haigh's trial by the Daily Mail led to the editor, Silvester Bolam, being sentenced to three months in prison for contempt of court after the paper called Haigh a murderer before he had been convicted. The paper had also called him a vampire, but that doesn't seem to have carried the same weight.

@incredibleflameboy

@@rosemaryfranzese317 that's a fair comment but the Plymouth brethren were particularly hard line in their practices and quite secretive about what they did. Crowley left the group at around 15 years old and was pulled into extremes of excess with the freedom that came with that. John Haigh similarly grew up in the group and once free of them chased freedom to the extent of commiting murder to achieve it. Both showed a lack of moral compass, John only thinking of himself and Crowley actively preaching that the only important thing is your own (true) will, in other words if you want to do it you can regardless of others and consequence. I don't really understand your comparison to forced incarceration, torture and genocide to a religious group that taught that they were better than everyone else. The members of the Plymouth brethren weren't the ones being subjugated whilst holocaust survivors were entirely the victims. It's quite clear that the Plymouth brethren were harmful to their members. We know that John Haigh was told from a young age that a birthmark he had was a sign of sin and the devil and both of them were regularly beaten as children. I don't believe for a second that Crowley was the wickedest man in the world, he was a free thinker and very much before his time, but his childhood created a man who's disregard of others actually led to deaths, Haigh took the time to carry out the acts himself. It's great that you're standing up for them but let's be honest here, the hate of the Plymouth brethren begat hate and there's very little to defend in that.
@rosemaryfranzese317
@rosemaryfranzese317 Год назад
@@incredibleflameboy My intention was not to stand up for the Plymouth Brethren, I don’t know much about them. The point I meant to make was that evil people spring from all types of backgrounds and even the most terrible treatment doesn’t necessarily cause someone to be evil.

I was brought up in a Christian Bretheren family and recognise nothing of Haigh's experiences. I received nothing but love and support from my wonderful parents. What John Haigh experienced was dysfunctional and destructive, and you are correct to assume that it had a dreadful effect on his personality. However, many have experienced such a childhood and have not gone on to commit such heinous crimes.

Interestingly, most people interpret the saying to mean physical punishment when it originally meant guidance as the rod was used by shepherds to guide their flocks. The saying still works however, as his parents did not guide him well, instead lying to him about the marks of sin. Thus, when he did misbehave and no mark appeared, he lost all belief in what their preaching. This in no way absolves him as he was well aware that he was committing heinous crimes. Insanity as a defense is only possible if you truly have no understanding of right or wrong.
