The Acolyte Ep 3 - A step in the right direction for this Star Wars show?

With The Acolyte I was hoping to get back in to Star Wars. And general fandom/discourse about that Galaxy Far Far Away but after the first couple episodes left me wanting... this third episode admittedly felt like a step in the right direction for me. Jodie Turner Smith being a HUGE highlight.
Not only did it deepen the lore in directions I was hoping it may take but it also gave me something the pilot didn't, some investment in these characters. (Plus 100% less weird aging up choices, who knew deaging would work better here?) Great to briefly see Carrie Ann Moss back and Sol (as played by Lee Jung-Jae) continues to be incredible. Excited and hopeful to care more about Amanda Stenbergs portrayal of Mae and Osha (her acting was never the problem) in the next ep now that this backstory centric episode did some heavy lifting.
Star Wars is a fandom that I haven't really dabbled into for years. I've kept up with the shows for the most part. (I've seen them all but haven't been day one must watch with the majority of them.) I've seen every movie opening night since Episode One (somewhere I have a picture of me dressed as Darth Maul waiting for that midnight line).
But with a few exceptions (Andor, The Last Jedi, Bill Burr's episodes of Mandolorian) it's been a galaxy far far away that I've felt pretty casually towards. There's absolutely a rush hearing a lightsaber ignite, or the wail or a tie fighter in DOLBY surround, or even going on Rise of the Resistance and FEELING like you're in George Lucas' mind, but I feel like so much of that comes from my childhood love of New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, more than the present.

Funny that everyone is saying that they liked ep3 the best. It’s the opposite for me. Was on board for 1 and 2. 3 kinda lost me. And like you, the only reason I’m going to keep watching is the Star Wars branding and I enjoying listening and joining the (healthy) discourse around the shows. Hoping it gets better from here

I thought the first 2 episodes were ok but this one lost me- I just thought it was rather boring. The acting and dialogue was especially bad this episode. Instead of creating a new sect of witches, I wish they would’ve just went with the night sisters of Dathomir, I felt these new witches were again just kind of boring. The sets and the costumes again I’m not buying it, very CW look. Hoping the quality improves over the season.

Yeah guess I'm in the minority from what I've heard so far, I'm not sure why everyone who saw this early was saying this episode was mind-blowing, it was my least favourite so far. Maybe it's because I have a super low tolerance for petulant, bratty kids. I don't think it massively changed the lore of Star Wars either like people were saying either. I dunno the writing, direction and acting all felt like a step down from episodes 1-2 to for me. Jodie was great though! I definitely agree that a slight reworking of this episode would’ve made a better first episode. I also really appreciate having this kind of conversation and discourse because it is important that we do. Being able to talk about something you don’t like without completely shitting all over other peoples enjoyment is so important. And especially realizing that people come into things with different expectations and experiences. Because the Internet is already full of people who don’t like it for disingenuous reasons and don’t come at it in good faith. At my local comic book shop I would always have conversations with the manager about Star Wars and we didn’t always agree, but we both loved Star Wars and it didn’t devolve into a yelling match. It usually ended with huh interesting point, I’ll consider that.

Great video Coy, very intriguing in the real world comparisons you saw within The Acolyte. Aniseya and the magic/sorceress group is very interesting. From outfits it seems they aren’t apart of the Nightsisters’ but I am interested to see what makes Aniseya and her clan distinctive to the Nightsisters. 5:29 I see your point and it is very interesting, like how Aniseya explained the Thread, where one person couldn’t push back Aniseya’s force, while when 2 people work as one could compete against it. So for. That view point I could see where Osha and Mae inhabits one body.

This was a great episode for me, Im always a fan of seeing different factions that have different ideas or beliefs of the force, having this coven be exiles from potentially Path of the Open Hand or offshoot of the Nightsisters. Plus, using dark magick to potentially Clone....hell yes. The Marvel series of the Phases of High Republic are pretty good reads for Star Wars Comics.
@intbananas
@intbananas 3 месяца назад
Like you, I feel only a few characters are standing out. My main point of interest for this show remains the mystery of what happened, which we're starting to get more info on, but there's definitely still more to learn. I'm also intrigued by the coven's perspective on the Force, that they don't see themselves as dark side; it adds more complexity to that part of the Star Wars universe than I think we've seen in any of the live action media. Because of this I'm still keeping an open mind,; however, I can't help but compare it to reading The Da Vinci Code, where the mystery meant I ploughed through the book, but it wasn't satisfying when everything was revealed. I'm hoping that this show will build to a strong ending; the potential is definitely there; what did the Jedi do that led to Torbin's decisions to take a vow of silence and immediately drink the poison?
@aprilshighfantasysoul5891
@aprilshighfantasysoul5891 3 месяца назад
I think they didn't start with the flashback to prime you to not just believe everything you're seeing. I think the show is really focusing in on challenging your preconceived notions of what the truth is - you first see Mae attacking a Jedi (someone we've been told are always good and just) at it looks like she's just another dark-side person who hates the light. We see that Osha believes the Jedi to be perfect, good saviors who rescued her and she's 100% willing to see the worst in her sister, having believed her whole life that she killed her entire family (something the Jedi told her happened though she didn't actually see Mae do all of that). And then we got Torbin clearly feeling guilty enough to kill himself when facing Mae again. I think if we got the flashback first, we might not have questioned Osha's belief that her sister was dead/started the fire and killed her family. Knowing Torbin killed himself and apologized to Mae lets us know that what we saw this episode wasn't the whole story. By keeping us in the dark of what the characters saw that night, until now, it allowed us to think we knew what was going on, only to realize that we let our own pre-concieved notions and their own take of events guide the way we viewed all the characters. I think it's much more impactful to make the audience have to confront assumptions they made after they've been allowed to settle into them - having seen the breadcrumbs along the way that the story we've been told might not actually be the case The Acolyte seems to be in the position to really be able to point out propaganda and the re-writing of history and how different groups view the same actions which is a great thing to explore in a story like star wars that is filled with powerful organizations claiming what they're doing is what's best for the galaxy. Of course, we haven't seen everything yet, but I'm hopeful they can stick the landing just like Andor did. For me, the characters/concept was investing from the start once I realized that it was going to be about indoctrination and how people deal with discovering everything they thought they knew (were taught by an authority) and then acted on (devoted their life to) might not have been correct. I can see so much potential for them to explore this with Osha and Yord and perhaps we'll see more about what Sol knows/doesn't know and why the wookie jedi has chosen isolation after what happened. Maybe it's just that I'm interested in seeing deconstruction from high-control group stories because it's so close to my own experience, but if that's not something that is in your wheelhouse, then it might be more difficult to identify with the characters

1 / 2😮Coy. I have been racking my brain to come up with a simple straightforward comment to you about the Jedi and I cannot do it. No matter how I approach it in my head it never ends in a good way. If you look at the Jedi as if they were like Buddhist monks then maybe that might work, but the problem is in the world of Star Wars if the Jedi do not have an adversary to justify their existence, then all they have is the idea that there is this all encompassing mystical power that if you are not trained by us in controlling it you could become evil or consumed by the lust for the power of the force. So what happens if there’s peace in the galaxy, then what they are doing is then going throughout the galaxy looking for people who have the ability to tap into this power and then take them away to train them in how to control it. I also read that there’s a division within the order, that if you do not become a night or a master or even a Padawan, there is literally a council of reassignment where I am assuming they train you for I guess civil service or something else and I also think there’s like an option for you. Just just go back home again, which is weird because I seriously doubt the Jedi would let anybody who has forced sensitivity to just go home and not keep an eye on them. Either way I know this is just fantasy stuff but in the long run, it just looks bad in general for the Jedi as an organization not saying that they are bad but as an organization, they have a lot to lose if something goes down to make the order look bad because now they literally have a reputation to maintain.

I really wanted to like this show and I thought we were in store for another Andor quality show, but it just isn’t there after 3 episodes. I agree the writing has been lacking a lot of substance, but I disagree on the acting. Sol is the only actor in this show holding it up right now (the poor dialogue is hurting more.) I just can’t escape this ”fan faction” quality the show puts off. I think it’s going to be a 3 strikes your out for this show. If a show is unable to hook you after 3 episodes, and it’s been a headache to get through, there’s no point in continuing. Happy for those who are able to find something to like

The episode order was wrong. This should have been the first episode. RU-vidrs overhyped this episode and it was just meh. It doesn't break anything. Two religions interpreting the force. @alexp601
@alexp601 3 месяца назад
Yeah I heard it was going to break canon and cause everyone to rage. I heard it was going to say that the Force is used differently by females. I guess that was just the toxic fans' interpretations of it. It was just a coven of force-sensitive witches.
@rebirthofgodrics907
@rebirthofgodrics907 3 месяца назад
There's no twins in kotor that's the mmo which people just tolerate everyone is fine with it as long as it is not Canon. Though many would prefer over anything Disney. Creating life is a unique feat that in all of star wars has only been attributed to Darth plagueis. Heck Darth plagueis whole shtick is that he could create life but now we have a random coven of witches that just know how to do it ...this just means there's probably more people in the galaxy that can create life and plagueis wasn't so special maybe Palpatine should have told anakin of the witches instead. It breaks the myth now plagueis is just a sith like all the others. It cheapens the story the same way the chosen one cheapens the story if Vader is to bring balance to the force but then Palpatine returns or any other sith. Then the prophecy is null at least old Canon you could argue that as long as the Skywalker bloodline exist there can be balance still bad is bad no matter who makes it.
@spongybananas6967
@spongybananas6967 3 месяца назад
Idk how you can say it doesn't break anything when absolutely nothing makes sense. Why would the jedi come to 'claim' the two children when the jedi don't concern themselves with taking all force sensitive children in the galaxy, let alone ones that are seemingly 8-9 years old like the twins. The Jedi were ready to turn Anakin away because he was too old to be trained and he was the fucking chosen one. Also the fact some random witches managed to create two force sensitive children but Kaminoans, Jedi and Nightsisters could never figure it out makes absolutely no sense. They're also clearly setting it up that the fire didn't kill the witches as none of the witches were on fire or burnt when we saw their dead corpses. Theres two ways for them to go with it which is either the sith killed them which would make no sense because the jedi were literally there and would've seen it, potentially even fought with them, breaking the whole 'There hasn't been a sith for a millennia', or the more likely option, the jedi killed the coven for the children and mind tricked Osha into believing it was the fire, which would make sense with the context of the jedi master killing himself saying we though what we were doing was right. That would actually destroy everything we know about star wars and the jedi and make them as bad as the sith and would be a spit in the face to every fan of star wars ever I have no idea how people still praise this show when it has awful writing, awful acting, awful fight scenes and choreography no care for any previously established cannon and such stupid oversights like a blowing open fire in space, or stone bricks that can catch on fire and burn... There is absolutely nothing redeeming about the show. But i guess im just a racist homophobic bigot, a grifter, a toxic hater and not a real star wars fan right?
@alexp601

@@spongybananas6967 you should probably wait until the end of the show, as a lot of your bad writing issues will likely be explained. That’s what shows do, they show us things that might not make sense without the full picture, and then go on to explain things further. It’s like, if we see someone die but don’t see who killed them, it doesn’t mean it’s bad writing, it means there’s more to find out. And I’m not someone who calls people names for not liking something. If you don’t like something because of the writing/acting etc that’s completely fine. It’s all subjective.

Those shows were set in the aftermath of The Original Trilogy and had more simple story lines, more recognized characters and lore than The ACOLYTE, which is full of Expanded Universe references and lore that a casual just wouldn't connect with right away. I'm sorry but that is the case with this particular show, but it's good that episode 3 has brought you in a little bit more now. May the Force/Thread be with you. ☺️😉

No new information or development 🤷 I'm out 👍 Episode one - they tell us that Osha had a sister and family. They died in a mysterious fire. Episode two- Characters discuss that Osha had a sister and family and they died in a mysterious fire. Episode three- here's Oshas sister and family, watch them die in a mysterious fire. I guess the show is running on a thrilling 3 episode "tell, tell, show" system... Y'know, to make sure we've really chewed our food before we swallow. This show is terrible and I've lost so much respect for channels who's insite I'd usually admire, my heart sunk when I watched the Reel Rejects suck Disneys dick dry over this show 🤦 it's not just bad Star Wars, it bad overall entertainment. I have no issue with the females witches nor the lesbian couple in it. What really doesn't make it a show for me is a few things. One, the dialogue. The dialogue feels very pedestrian and simple, like its extremely watered down. 2, it doesnt feel epic as Star Wars normally is. It feels like a fan made the show. And not knocking on any fan made films. The recent wolvernine is my favorite one so far. And that felt more grand than the Acolyte. I mean c'mon the wookie jedi doesnt look like a wookie at all. It looks like a regular guy in jedi clothing WITH a wookie mask on.

What I like about the series so far that it does feels like an onion. Now we’re seeing the Jedi in a more good light, but is it really? I would oppose a reorganization of the episodes orders because of this very reason. I think the commentary here is about Jedi as a religion / colonizers and what is the ‘right’ way to use the Force / Thread, who has the right to wield it and why the coven should abide to the Jedi rule. Another interesting point is that just like Anakin, Osha and Mae don’t seem to have an actual father but the Force / Thread. I’m actually very intrigued by this aspect of the Jedi’s dogma getting explored and how the Force at end of the day supersedes and outlived both the dogmas of the coven and the Jedi.

What did the Jedi do that was so bad they need to be killed by Mae? Why did the Jedi Torbin need to drink the poison because he didn’t do anything wrong? Mae should be getting hunted because she killed everyone. How did Mae start a fire that burned brick everywhere? Why are all the witches not burnt but supposedly dead, so how did they die? If you watched episode 3 and didn’t think the writing was dumb, I can’t feasibly care about your opinion moving forward.

I am also curious what powers Mae could have gotten from "ascending", maybe Osha could go back to her home planet to try to "ascend" to be able to fight her sister. We saw Osha's ceremony got interrupted by the Jedi, so i wonder if that could be causing some sort of power imbalance in the girls "thread".

Hi Coy, Great to see you talking about The Acolyte again. I very much enjoyed your take on this. I've just finished watching the episode. I'll start with my overall thoughts. I thought it was alright, I didn't absolutely love it, and I definitely didn't hate it. I really enjoyed the witches interpretation of the force. I'm always really confused by fans that have to be SO strict when it comes to the lore of star wars. Surely with something like the force there will be different interpretations of it depending on the characters outlook. This is just the way this coven of witches interpret it. I liked that. I have also seen fans annoyed that they think it totally breaks canon by having two witches using the force to create life. Remember, this was 100 years before the phantom menace, and clearly done in secret. The jedi might not have even known about this, and by the end of the show they could all be dead so the story wouldn't have even been passed on. Also, even if they are left alive at the end, I very much doubt they'd want to go around telling everyone that this ability exists. I imagine they'd keep this a secret. I also find it bizarre that people would be annoyed at the portrayal of a group of women, and two shown to clearly be in a relationship. We have covens of nuns in real life. I imagine some of those nuns may be gay, and possibly be in hidden relationships. It seems a silly thing to lose your mind over and definitely not something that "RUINS STAR WARS" I hope we get to see how that one little fire managed to destroy the entire facility, as I did think that was a bit of a plot hole, so I really hope we get to see more of what happened to Mae and the Jedi/Witches during that bit. I do have one little criticism, this being the music during the ceremony. I thought the non-diegetic song being the same words as the witches were saying was a little cringe, but it didn't ruin the episode for me. Overall, looking at the continued backlash of this show online, I honestly don't know what Star Wars "fans" actually want from a Star Wars show any more? This is the first fully new/fresh story we've had from Star Wars in years, actually focusing on a time period we've not seen before, including a whole set of new characters we've not seen before. It's far from a perfect show, I'm going to reserve my entire judgement until I've seen it all, but so far it's definitely not something I think is dreadful. My last comment I'll leave is to all those people that spend their time totally outraged, making videos about how "THIS HAS RUINED EVERYTHING..BLA BLA BLA", there are PLENTY of other amazing shows out there to watch, even in the sci-fi genre. Spend your time watching stuff that is superb, shows like Severance, Silo, Dark, Foundation etc. There are so many good shows you could use your channel to talk about. Don't constantly live in a negative mindset and start giving other shows their due deserve. Cheers

This is such a well thought out comment!! You articulated so many of my own thoughts regarding the ridiculous “outrage” over this show. It’s definitely not perfect but’s not as bad as some claim. At this point I really don’t know what people expect Disney to do. At first they tried to “advance” the franchise with the sequel trilogy (I wasn’t a fan) and fans were rightly upset at the way the classic characters were interpreted and many of there accomplishments undone. That’s a valid complaint. And it seems Disney learned something from that experience by finally deciding to carve out their own little “slice” of the Star Wars galaxy by creating the High Republic. Literally the best idea they could come up with, an unexplored time period with brand new characters to explore. I’m sure the thought was “who could possibly complain about this?” So then we finally have the first live action interpretation of this unique and unexplored era and what’s the result…certain fans just can’t help but complain. It’s really sad. Again I’m not saying the show is “for me” but it definitely isn’t as bad as some make it out to be. Honestly it will never upset me in the same way as misinterpreting a classic character to fit the “vision” of a new director. I understand how that upsets fans. But this show is literally the opposite, all new characters in an all- new environment and yet the hate remains. Disney really can’t win at this point.

The chant was cheesy? It's a show directed at a younger audience, so it's hard for me to peg that as a flaw, but to each his own I suppose! I did like the subplot you mentioned there, so with you on that! Also having another view of the force was interesting, it's always cool to see how another sect views what we know of as The Force. The likability of characters isn't an issue for me yet, but I think that could have been fixed if they simply didn't make these episodes so tight. For example: A scene of the Jedi's before they arrive just chatting about whatever would have helped, then seeing the contrast of how they talk to each other, as opposed to how they talk to other people. That just would've helped for character development and contrast. I'm hopeful that episode 4 will be the _this is why you're watching this_ kind of episode since it's halfway into the story. As always it's nice to see how you view things without being all toxic about it. It's very interesting to here opinions like this born not of negativity.

I feel like the best Star War shows are the grittier smaller scale stories like Andor and Mandalorian where the main characters aren't Jedi or anything crazy just normal people for the most part. But these shows with much bigger stakes involving Jedi and Sith like this, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka always sort of feel cheap and a little goofy at times. Say what you want about the movies, they (mostly) captured just how big of a deal the force users are, the shows makes it feel like I'm watching watered down jedi for some reason. And I absolutely feel the same, like I'm only watching out of obligation because it's Star Wars, not because I am super interested in what's going on, even if I don't think it's that bad.

The major issue i have with this show is it's predictable. Whatever this cult is isn't really important whether they are a sect of night sisters or another force cult. The mystery is did the Jedi eradicate them out of fear and they were actually innocent. The answer is obviously the Jedi acted out of fear , probably provoked by the witches and the Jedi slaughtered them in what they thought was self defense, and in doing so wiped out the last of their kind , and then justified it as taking care of a threat. Then later they realized they made a mistake and covered it up from the council. while mae the survivor was found by a sith, told her story to him and that sets the sith up to move more aggressively with their plan . Darth Sidious destroyed the Jedi without using a weapon ( for the most part) which again is the sith way as quoted in this show. Maybe I get some small details wrong or more small details are added but that's the story. A story that was done a lot in 70s thrillers and devil movies. Just because you port that into Starwars doesn't make it suddenly original.

I will say, the Mandalorian was great, Kenobi had good moments and was not bad, Andor was fun (but i need to remove biases and rewatch it), Tales of the Jedi was great, Mandalorian s3 needed work, Ahsoka was similar to Kenobi but was overall a good time, Empire was fun but missed the ball for me, and Acolyte should have used a different era in my opinion. Old Republic could have been touched. Or the Plagiues Novel or Bane, however, this show does struggle to push a sense of joy for it. It is new, however, the spirit of Star Wars seems to be lacking. The irony of course is that The Acolyte is inspired by Rashomon and TLJ, which deals with people feeling and remembering things differently despite seeing the same thing lol.

I thought this was going to be more about bad cops but this is more like bad Jedi cult that snatches kids from their family, totally not on my bingo card. A lot more darker on the Jedi than I thought it would be. I didn't also expect this would be a lot about the Jedi gatekeeping who can use the force. So far it's interesting but i hope they explain more and not be too mysterious
@alexp601
@alexp601 3 месяца назад
I guess if there's a law that says all Jedi must test force-sensitive kids, and give them the choice to join the Jedi, that isn't so bad. It's not as bad as them coming in with lightsabres and taking kids against their will.

How does stone burn? Why would torbin commit suicide over doing nothing wrong?? Howd he age 40 years in 15 years?? How were the kids created if anakin is the chosen one completely ruins that? If they can create children out of nothing just make an army of them make a million of them?

Maul is a Zabrak, and the female Zabrak is of a different variantion of the species. The Dathomirian witches are similar. However, they tend to race the dead. The withces and ancient Sith had many dark arts that parallel the evil power of the sorcerers of Marvel

Honestly, I hope this would give Lucasfilm and Disney to do a Darth Bane Trilogy of shows. However, they have seemed unwilling to do that. My fear is that they would chance to much of what made all three novels great. Maybe his life is too similar to Anakin's? Or Maybe have villain as the protagonist of a project is against there brand. I would trust Max to make good show.

My problem with the episode if comes in the second half of the episode. Like what was up with Mae turing into a evil brat? She legit tried to kill her sister because she wanted to leave. Like what???? That instantly made the first 2 episodes worse because they were tyring to make her sympathetic that doesn't work if she's this evil devil child.

That’s the mystery. Also, probably that’s the twist. I think we are dealing with an unreliable narrator episode here, I don’t believe that’s what actually happened.
@hawkeyemihawkgettingmoneylord
@hawkeyemihawkgettingmoneylord 3 месяца назад
@@zaurijunior the mystery is why she's evil? Maybe because she was created unnaturally using the dark side of the force lol.? Honestly not much of a intressting story So your suggesting that half this episode was actually a lie and completely worthless so . This episode we only get 20 minutes of actually content. And within that 20 minutes it's still breaking the lore of the force? Yea bud ima have respectfully hard disagree with you there. And of this is a incomplete story it make no sense why this couldn't be the first episode.

@@hawkeyemihawkgettingmoneylordOne of the major inspirations for The Acolyte is Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon. It’s not really about what is ‘real’ but what Osha remembers of the incident that lead to her Jedi training. I don’t think that’s the only version of that narrative we’re seeing, and maybe the truth is somewhere in between.

I mean, it's actually been less than two hours lmao. 40 minutes per with 5 minutes of credits, we're about 105 minutes (I know, splitting hairs here) I really appreciate the approach you're taking with this. I didn't really feel episode 1 & 2 and if anything, I might have had the opening scene and that's it. I would have gone right into Episode 3 right after that kind of 'prologue' with a Jedi murder and then moved the story on from there. which I felt was way better (& emotionally affecting) I think there's a section of the internet that relies a lot on that incel/white supremacist grift where the criticism is not just in bad faith, but pretty well hate speech. So when I see a channel examining it from a casual Star Wars fan who is deeply insightful on all the other topics, you know I have to hit that subscribe button. Cheers.
