It’s not in her file that she’s a twin because the Jedi who were there are hiding something about what went down there.

They are definitely 2 people I think the twist is osha was the one who started the fire (evil) but yet the Jedi took her and left the weaker (good) twin which had corrupted her

Osha is in master sol's custody. When Mae 1st attacks master Torbin.

What if Osha is both Mae and Osha and is using force projection to be in 2 places at once. Mae didn't actually die in the fire but is the Sith in the helmet and is horribly scarred from the fire.

You both say it. Put two of Sol's lines together: "You can't trust your eyes." and "I saw her die." Those were the two dots I connected the instant I heard the second line.

Okay, so one way this theory might actually work is that after Mae's death, Osha physically split her body into two people.

Anyone who has seen Russian Doll, Leslye Headland's previous work, is aware that what seems like a straight forward premise isn't.

The twist is that the Jedi are the bad guys who have killed her entire village and because of guilt tried to raise the surviving child but because of her trauma kicked her out, not realizing that her sister lives on through her. By the way one personality can use the force, Mae because of her hatred and the other can't because the Jedi blocked her ability.

Both of Osha's wake-ups are in the same place, they're just shot from a bit of a different angle.

-I’ve felt like something bizarre going on with Mae, Sol says to Vanestra that the twin was presumed dead, while telling the others he saw the twin die. -Is an Unreliable narrator at play here? Or is it possible Mae died and brought back via how the witch coven used the force? Could the witch coven have a connection to the Master or Apprentice at the time, with them having used their abilities to save Mae? -Were the Twins predisposition to the light & the dark each, so Sol took Osha. Also the Jedi master who took the silence vow inside the mediation shield said to Mae “we thought what we were doing was right” before he took the poison which was very interesting.

I share this theory, so here are my notes: Osha is Mae - other prisoners say Jedi Killer is crazy, and she planned the escape - blocks of time missing from Osha - Osha’s mexnek partner asked where she went the night the Jedi was killed - Osha can’t use the force, Mae can - quote during flashback of the two girls, “you’re with me, I’m with you, always one, born as two” - the Light and Dark “O”s in the title card - The show seems to set up audience tricks - OSHA was never in the same room as Mae and witnesses - Sol says your eyes can deceive you, do not trust them. Then says he saw Mae die - “You look exactly like her” Qimir - “It’s not going to stay safe if OSHA keeps running away” Not OSHA and Mae - Only one girl blocks during training, other girl stands behind. Other trainees block side by side - ‘Ascension’ is the power of many over One - The girls argue, “we are not the same” then “of course we are”. Hair braiders behind them are shook by this - OSHA and Mae are always dressed the same as children - “What the thread has tied together, no one can separate”. Is that what the Jedi tried to do? Separate? - Only Mae is Ascendant - Only OSHA comes out to meet Jedi - As kids they are not identical, in the future they are. So this split personality theory could start after the fire. Because of Ascension? - Sol keeps asking who trained Mae, it was him

Maybe she was force projecting with master Torbin, not really there but he could see her in his mind. She arrives as the conversation ends just in time to hand him the vial right before Yord walks in. Also, maybe, as others have said, Yord is the sith, he knows Mae/Osha has a split personality and he plays along.

Unreliable Narrator seems like a really good theory. I think we're on to something here. We know from TOR that the Jedi don't shy away from murdering entire colonies of sentients who are disrupting their stuff on their home planet. We know the Jedi don't help unless they absolutely think they should. On top of that, we know the Jedi wipe memories. It was even referenced in one of the episodes. It's a reference to Revan.

Can she teleport? After Indara's death, Osha's next character interaction is with a coworker that she tells, "What I do on my days off is none of your business". Sol is convinced that Mae is dead, but turns right around and tells Osha, "I believe you", after SHE says that Mae is alive. He's placating her, like a mental patient. Maybe they memory wiped her, but it never quite worked fully. You're not insane, Meg. Great theory!

The only way this theory could work is if she's subconsciously force projecting Mae when she sleeps as a means of dealing with the trauma of loosing her. Maybe she knew this was starting to happen when she was a padawan, it freaked her out, and she left the order.

Leslye Headland states, everything you think the Acolyte is, it’s not. So for those who actually think this show is good, it’s not.

Theory might hold some weight. Between filming from a POV stand point and inconsistency in time between scenes Mae being an alter ego of Osha (or vice versa) is possible. Jail breakers were caught way to quick from one scene to the next. And the bar tender being there on the ship to accuse Osha of wreaking his bar was also out of place. They're playing with time between scenes. Also Osha and Mae are almost in the same location when sleepy jedi un-alvies himself. Yord vouches for Osha's innocence in that scene, appearing as a standup guy. But if Osha and Mae are one and the same, Yord is covering for her crimes. Might he be the sith in disguise then? The show is asking the audience to think. They are too many little inconsistencies in how things are presented in this show. Assassins just don't roll up on their target and say "fight me bro" while taking a dueling stance.

Good points and there's something to it, BUT they are not the same person. It's something else.

The Jedi 100% slaughtered that that coven. I wonder if they made OSHA think she saw her sister, of even controlled her sisters actions?

I think Mae is Osha. She went to the dark side mourning her sister. She brought her sister back with help from the sith and/or mothers and she is placed or given a “life” as a Mekmek. Osha knows what the Jedi did and wants revenge.

Great theory Meg! This kinda reminds me of seeing “The 6th Sense” in theaters. Most didn’t didn’t pick up the subtle fact “Bruce Willis” character was deceased on the initial watch.

Hey, Star Wars Meg, I don't know if anyone has suggested this, but what if Osha is the twin who died, and she is just a projection? Have you noticed that her droid is always close to her, even when she was taken prisoner in the first episode, he is always there. The only time he seemed missing is when she had her "vision" interacting with her sister. Is her droid projecting Osha? I feel like Sol knows.

SinceOsha was in Jedi custody at the beginning of ep 02, and in another star system, to boot, I was prepared torejectthis theory, until I remembered that Luke used a similar hability to project himself though star systems in TLJ.

Definitely a compelling theory. I could see Mae dying and accidentally using Osha as her vessel (as Palpatine intended to do with Rey). The more I think of it there's another plot point from the Sequels (Luke projecting himself from Ach-To to Crait) that could explain the holes, especially Mae's first attempt on Torbin's life while Osha is on Carlac.

It is weird that her twin has the identical hair style and color even though they havent seen one another since kids. She could be force projecting like luke did.

I had the same thought. I told a friend that Mae was a "Tyler Durden" so to speak. It's wild that you found that Fight Club connection. The wake-up scenes where Osha gasps and sits bolt upright reinforced that theory for me. After 5 episodes, I'm less convinced this will pan out. That bring said, I still think there will be some twist surrounding the twins.

Hedlund has plagiarized so much already that I had decided a few days ago that they’d pull a Fight Club Tyler Durden kind of thing & one is dead while the other developed a split personality because of the trauma. They’ve never been seen by anyone else interacting with each other. There’s a difference in influences and copying.

Mae isnt dead. But Indara is probably alive and a Sith

i think there is a dark force user who is manipulating her grief as a youngling to believe her sister lives meanwhile the sith maybe is using some ability to take control of osha? maybe temporarily control her mind as the alter ego rather than having a twin still? maybe the dark force user thinks the way to defeat the jedi is to use other jedi… similarly to how palpatine learned to groom jedi anakin into vader?

Maybe she is able to Force project her alternate ego, and maybe that's why she was not able to touch the meditating Jedi cause her conscious was also focused on the hear and now. With the Jedi who found her.

I rewatched the first 2 episodes trying to see if this theory could be possible. Honestly the only way I see this working or being possible is through the use of Force Projection. In the Last Jedi Luke used it to fool Kylo so that everyone else could escape. While using Force Projection he was able to fool everyone into thinking he was there. He even was able to hand Leia the dice from the Millennium Falcon. Yet when it came to fighting Luke is unable to interact with the physical world so unlike other lightsaber duels the blades never have contact. For Luke to keep up the illusion he only plays defense. However once his powers ceased the dice disappeared. Now there are a few problems with Luke's form of Force Projection being key to this theory. The first being it is a Lightside ability. Second in order to use it to the extent Luke did it meant him sacrificing his life because of how draining it was. Third Mae clear fights & interacts with Master Indara, she gives Torbin the poison he used to die neither should be possible with this power even if Darkside user could weild it. The fourth issue is when Luke used it he was in a deep state of mediation so the possibility of Osha using it while sleeping maybe works however when Mae is trying to escape Osha is shown clearly awake. The final issue is if Mae/Osha were able to be capable of this ability I doubt they would only be an acolyte trying to become an apprentice to a master. However since this theory could be really cool I did a little deeper dive. There are 2 other forms of force projection that could work as a solution but they only have existed in Legends material. Now given the show has already pulled from extended Star Wars content by introducing the Barash Vows into live action I definitely think they could use something from Legends and make it canon. The first alternative force projection ability is Doppelganger. With this ability computer scans, Droids and everyone else could be fooled into believing the projection was real. With this ability the user could interact with the physical world. Now with the Doppelganger ability the illusion was an exact copy projection meaning it wouldn't be possible for Osha & Mae to appear dressed differently or be distinguishable from each other. It also was a Lightside ability. The second possibility is Force Phantom. It was a darkside ability and the projection could be anything but the user's own image. So while they are twins I think it is possible that the Tattoo might be enough of variation to fit how the ability works. Force Phantoms can interact with the physical world and they can inflict injury &/or death on someone. Which to me means if force projection is how they are manipulating events Force Phantom makes the most sense. In legends the person would have to be a significant force user to use this power however unlike Luke's version it wasn't as taxing in terms of life force. There is also a non Force Projection option that is talked about in Star Wars Myths & Fables which for a lack of better way of putting it involves a Jekyll and Hyde like factor. However I dont think that is an option because Mae has been seen by others while Osha's presence can be accounted for. Now what is unclear is the proximity limits of this ability it is not clear if it works over great distances. Given the two places at once issues I think the Jekyll & Hyde, Sixth Sense and Tyler Durden (Fight Club) explanations do not work. The only way for Osha not to be aware of her activity or for Osha/Mae to pull off the two places at once ruse you would need an accomplice in the style of the Tony Clifton ruse Andy Kaufman used in real life. If you aren't familiar this concept here is quick explanation. The actor/ comedienne Andy Kaufman created a foul-mouthed, loud & obnoxious alter ego Tony Clifton. He would show up on set or in public and just piss people off. Andy would blame Tony for things and act like he was unaware of what Tony was doing. While Andy & Tony looked totally different those close to Andy wouldn't buy into Andy denying to be Tony or Tony denying to be Andy. However one day while in full view of the public Tony showed up at an event with Andy clearly being present. How this was accomplished was by having Andy's friend Bob Zmuda appear as Tony. In the grand scheme people figured out the whole thing was a giant bit but briefly some actually believed the two people existed separately. Which mean that if this style explanation is possible there would need to be a third party pretending to be Mae to be an alibi for Osha. I think the biggest question that has to be answered for the only one Twin is actually alive theory to work is why go to this extreme to seek revenge? Why would you need to pretend your dead twin is alive if all you are after is revenge? Whether you kill as Mae or as Osha the result is the same. However I think there is one explanation or motive that works. There has been a lot of focus on the concept of killing a Jedi without a weapon and killing the dream of the Jedi. Now for 3 of the four Jedi Mae has set out to kill none of those characters really would care who is trying to kill them whether it be Mae or Osha. Yet with the fourth Jedi the circumstance is very different Master Sol claims to have seen Mae die, he genuinely cares about Osha, he also may have been aware of whatever events that involved the Coven's destruction but didnt participate in the events same as the other 3. Given the other 3 Jedi are living in solidarity isolated from the day to day events of the Jedi it likely stemmed from great shame & guilt making them believe they needed to remove themselves believing themselves unworthy of being traditional Jedi. Whereas Sol who seems to have some regrets but largely seems content with events of the past. Therefore getting to Sol would be harder both physically and emotionally. So if he were to find out the whole time Osha was helping solve these murders she was actually playing the long game to get him and betray him. That level of pain would destroy him it would shatter his world, destroy his beliefs and like Anakin betraying Obi-Wan be a pain too great to fully comprehend. Essentially that revelation might be enough to cause his death but no weapon will be used to accomplish it.

Luke, in The Last Jedi, was in 2 places at once when facing Kylo at the end of the movie. So, maybe Osha can project Maye in the same way Luke did in the TLJ. The director said she was influenced by the TLJ, so........?

You either embrace the madness that is the Acolyte or you utterly despise it. There is no middle ground, no in-between.

Qimir said, "you look just like HER". If he was tipping his hand to say he knows she's the other twin, wouldn't he say "You look just like Mae"? For this theory, maybe he was saying Osha looks just like her MOTHER. Maybe he's saying this bc he was there when her mom died and there's more to him. I think he's another acolyte or the Sith apprentice.

I listened to the entire video very carefully and I think this is pretty brilliant. It would explain a lot of the clunkiness in the dialogue and pacing. I didn't even understand why Osha woke up in a such a panic to start the show! That was odd to me from the onset. Nothing had happened (in her mechanic life) and she wakes up as if something awful just happened. It also explains why Mae and Osha have the same hairstyle - which seemed like a ridiculously, lazy oversight by the directors. The odds of 2 young women who have not been around each other since being toddlers having the exact same hair is pretty dumb on its face. And I love that it makes Sol's statements logical - "I SAW HER DIE." He says it quite definitively. And he tells Osha - "I believe YOU" - that doesn't necessarily mean he believes Maw is a different person killing Jedi. It could just mean he believes Osha is being sincere that SHE (that side of her personality) did not commit the murder. Throw in the Fight Club breadcrumbs (which I was unaware of) and all it adds up. Amazing theory. Great work!

Best theory I've heard for the Acolyte yet! I still don't think it justifies redefining the force, but we have yet to see that.

I noticed that May woke up the first 2 times we cut away from Osha. I wondered if there was some “force projection” going on. Like Luke from the Last Jedi but over a shorter distance.

I think that it’s one spirit bouncing between two bodies. Because Osha split from the group and Yord followed, but how did they get to Torbin after if they took a short cut? Which adds to the mystery with Yord. If you notice, many of Mae’s scenes happen when Osha is incapacitated to a degree. Yord could’ve been observing the spirit transference happen.

The poison tor the jedi was actually put there by the guy who made it.... The real sith.... She used force projection to enter the mind of the jedi. The force field she was trying to break through to get to the jedi was a mental. We see them interacting only mentally. Think about it. Why was she trying to attack him if she brought the poison for him to voluntarily take? I think she NEEDS them to attack her with all their force because she uses their own force against them or to help generate her projection stronger.

What if Mae is OSHA and OSHA is Mae?

If this is the case then it would be similar to a Magnum PI episode from the 80s. It was the episode where Sharon Stone played a twin however it turns out her twin sister was dead and the one sister was schizophrenic and she was talking to her evil sister in her head. This was before Sharon Stone was famous. It’s a great episode to watch. A double episode 👍🏼

I'm visually impaired so I'm a listener not a watcher. I thought the split personality thing was what they were hinting rather heavily at, to the point that I assumed it was a deliberate red herring. Öh, and that Sol is the Sith master.

it might not be a bad theory, think of how Luke projected himself in the Last Jedi. Maybe there is something to this. I was thinking that Mae might kills Osha in the end without a weapon to become an Acolyte.

Maybe she died a different way initially, and then the witches reanimated her. This infuriated the Jedi, they went to kill the witches and started a fire… they thought the reanimated twin died, but she actually didn’t.

What if the twins ARE both alive but Osha does have a split personality but isn;t Mae but zctually the Sith and is manipulating her own sister! Qirin could be the red herring and just who he says he is.

I think this is a nice theory. But I think the last scene of episode 3 kills this theory - I wont spoil it for anyone who has not seen it yet.

It always confuses me how one actor can play multiple characters related to each other. For example Patton Oswald playing quadruplets in AOS

I at first thought the same thing Meg...until Master Rwoh states in Episode two that Master Torbin was attacked... Since Osha was physically on a starship with no less than four other Jedi when that happened. Osha couldnt physically have been there and done it. So Unless Mae is some sort of new "force ghost" ability or something, that cant be it.

I hope this comes to fruition. Much more interesting than how it has been going so far.

Ah, well, they were literally in the same scene together, right? So...Kinda hard to have that. Unless the person running out of the temple and in the getaway vehicle was someone else entirely, and Osha was just 'seeing' Mae there, then I'm skeptical. Could she have been seeing her sister when it was in fact someone else? Sure. Her master was there down the road and looked on with a worried look. *Could he have seen the 'real' person in the getaway vehicle? Possible. But it's a big stretch.

It’s possible that if you’re right and May is an alter ego, that may remembers what the Jedi did and that thing has something to do with erasing OSHAs mind or messing with her memories and that’s part of her motivation for killing the Jedi.

I caught a momentary glance at a tattoo on Mae's forehead when she was fighting the first Master (Indara). I have not seen that same tattoo on Osha's forehead. It's hard to see past those braids, but even during the prison ship escape and crash I didn't see it. Not saying that debunks your theory but food for thought. Also, Jedi Knight Yord could be the masked Sith if the trailer is of him fighting someone else not the Sith Lord. Maybe he was the Sith apprentice and killed the Master, That along with the whole Lord - Yord thing. That would also explain him vouching for Osha after Torbin. Very interesting theory Meg!

But everyone else saw mae and fought with Mae while Osha was right there . And Osha was with the jedi when Mae was poisoning the meditating jedi

I think they are a force dyad and one is naturally always gonna live a dark life and the other a light life Mae is the natural light one tho and osha is the natural dark one even tho they are on opposite sides of the force oshas destiny is to become the sith and make will die but on the light side of the force and osha continues the rule of two and bc she’s part of a dyad that’s what pushes back against the force and creates anakin skywalker bc of what the sith do in this series

Events happened at different times, but being delivered to us sequentially

I thought about this as well and In the first episode I thought that Mae may (ha!) very well be a Force twin that pops up whenever Osha is unconscious. But given that we have seen them together - but NOT together (if you see what I mean) still makes this theory a possibility - so definitely with you there, Meg. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I actually like the show so far, and willing to give it a chance when others will not.

Osha and Mae look at eachother when Mae is in the speeder in ep 2, Osha tries to shoot her, so that pretty much debunks the theory.

Intriguing theory! There's a chance that something like this could be happening, potentially involving a dark side application of force projection. The Last Jedi showcased Luke using this ability during his fight with Kylo Ren. Similarly, Kylo and Rey were both shown to be projecting to each other remotely since they were a force dyad. (Luke's death after using it is a whole other discussion.) Perhaps "Mae" is indeed Osha, but after leaving the Jedi Order, became the Acolyte, and is now physically pretending to be Mae, hence the physical fight scenes. However, maybe with her and her sister possibly being a dyad (despite Palpatine's claim in Episode 9 about force dyads being rare - perhaps with Mae's death, their dyad status went unnoticed). If the sisters were a dyad, and Osha is dealing with significant trauma, she might have truly tapped into the dark side and discovered a way to simultaneously force project as we see in Osha's perspective scenes. For example, Osha during the crash wasn't able to use the force to retrieve her droid, suggesting that the version of Osha we see is actually the force projection, while the "real" Osha, could be masquerading as Mae. It's also possible the real Osha, if posing as Mae, might be tapping so deeply into the dark side, she's not actually consciously aware that she's also projecting through the force to appear physically as Osha - so she could have been shocked seeing what appeared to be a real version of her sister when she was escaping on the speeder. It's definitely a stretch, but the surviving twin's anger and trauma could be amplifying her ability to utilize force projection in this unique way (unlike Luke's usage). Palpatine's quote about the dark side of the force being a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural could be an interesting layer to this theory and the force projection concept. They may have chosen to include something along this line as a potential big twist.

It is an interesting theory. That she has dissociative identity disorder due to her trauma from her childhood. With the Jedi trying to cultivate Osha and the Sith trying to cultivate Mae. Disney have done this topic before too, with Moon Knight, so I definitely wouldn't rule it out. But it would also imply that Sol is covering for her somehow when Mae attacks the Jedi master while Osha is in custody. Is Mae really powerful enough to force project for that long when it quite literally killed Luke Skywalker? I guess we'll see!

There’s a famous Star Wars comic book where Luke wasn’t on the millennium Falcon but made it appear as if he was, so the gang would escape, which they wouldn’t have if Luke didn’t go with them. After they escaped, the illusion was lifted. As such, there’s some precedent of Jedi faking their presence at a place they weren’t.

Astral projection: when Osha goes to sleep, Mae manifests herself from Force, like Luke did. When she wakes up Mae disappears. But something went wrong during episode 2 and Mae saw Osha. From teaser "Awake" I belive in this theory.

Sol watched Osha shoot at Mae and miss. Wouldn't that prove they exist simultaneously? Not as a manifestation...

Your theory would explain Sol's remark that Mae is dead. A Jedi would not be fooled. Could he have sensed Osha's split personality? And she could've easily killed Torbin while the others were watching for the apothecary to show up. The street urchin could be been told to attack the door when her party appeared. The Jedi could've died hours earlier. You've raised my curiousity to a whole other level. I'll be watching till the end now

They don’t actually show Torbin die. He takes the poison and “Mae” leaves. When she comes back as “Osha” he was dead.

There was something similar in Agents of Shield with "Leopold" being an alter ego of "Fitz"

Evidence in your favor: The tattoo is a classic narrative set up for a reveal later when you see Mae had the tattoo The whole vision where Mae says always one but split as two or whatever Qimir says you look like "her" not you look like Mae Osha and Mae never seen by anyone else together Sol caught Mae from falling the same way he caught Osha They pointed out Osha not going out with friends at the time the murder took place

I’m inclined to agree with this theory you have presented…and that we won’t get a clear answer until the end of the series. I think the mysteries will also build with things seemingly “off” where Osha is concerned, but I do believe that Master Sol knows or at least suspects the truth. This series is going to be better than I thought.

At first, it feels like too many clues and over-the-top twists to be comprehensible. By the third episode Osha openly rejects the coven and makes her bid for the Jedi. This is what keeps me in. Agree, it's messy.

Great theory. If you are correct then Yord lied about her not killing Torbin. That leads to the theory that Yord is the Sith.

I thought of this as a possibility a couple of days ago and said it jokingly during a couple of different livestreams on YT that I caught. That there aren't actually twins and it's the same person and that's the real twist. I've been thinking about it more since then, because I found the editing confusing as well. I didn't know that Headland had made everyone watch Fight Club but hearing that really makes me think it is the case even more. That and some of the other things you've pointed out, particularly the perceived clunky dialogue and Sol's reaction and behaviour around her. The weird editing during the Torbin scene is what prompted it for me, but I like that point about her waking up twice on the crashed ship. It's something we've seen in these types of psychologically fractured characters as back as Firefly when River Tam wakes up twice. Or was that Serenity? I can't remember? I don't know. Olega really points to two different people. Yord was watching Osha the entire time they were there. There was no time for her to have Torbin take the poison. Nor was there an opportunity for Osha to berak into see Torbin the first time as she was with the other Jedi on their ship. That right there, in my mind, shows there are two different people rather than one with multiple personalities.
