Here's a good number to try to adjust that Disney will look at for more Acolyte in another format: pre-orders for the upcoming Justina Ireland book. Don't know if Audible lets you use the free trial you guys pitch on preorders but maybe suggest people using theirs on pre-ordering Wayfinder for a few weeks?

57:24 I’d be fascinated to see a series in live that covers an era instead of a character focus. Instead of “the mandalorian” “ahsoka” “Andor”, switch gears and go for something like The Clone Wars. TCW’s has a little something for everyone, and while it has a core cast to love and grow with, it easily hops and plays ensemble cast or focuses on new characters for entire arcs. It would be great to see something more ambitious like that, again tied to an era rather than a character. I feel like that’s something that could hold its own in a world where Disney/Lucasfilm says “hey, this is your Star Wars show for the next 3 season of Disney + streaming.”

What bugs me a lot about the nostalgia aspect of what studios will green light is that a lot of what is considered culturally relevant and beloved only got that way because they had, in the example of tv, these massive 22 episode seasons and ran for 5+ seasons. The early seasons of TNG were pretty hit or miss, and Voyager, DS9, Buffy, Stargate etc were all allowed to find their feet, explore the characters, take chances and run experiments, as well as having satisfying arcs and a feeling of progression. In a lot ways I love a lot of the shows coming out, but I'll be curious how we feel about this period when we look back in 10, 20 years, because I just don't feel like I really know any of these characters particularly well and then they're gone, half finished, and half explored.

I'm not sad it's not coming back. I really hate it for the fans of the show though. Just because I didn't connect to something doesn't mean I should want others to be deprived of it.

Thing is though you should really take that up with Disney because they're the ones that made that "Business Decision". I'm tired of all this rhetoric blaming those of us that didn't like the show, for being the ones Disney have listened to, it's just nonesense! IF Disney really listened to one side of the fanbase, don't you think they would have NEVER greenlit the Rey movie!? I mean just look at how many fans don't want that movie to happen, nor with they go watch it if it ever gets made. Did Disney listen to that!? NOPE. Nor did Disney listen to the fans who were very interested in where Grogu's story would go when he left with Luke, no, Disney "listened" to KK and believed that Grogu being with Luke for a while, would hurt the viewing numbers for the Mandalorian S3; this had the complete opposite effect, and many fans actually didn't like that Grogu returned to Din Djarin so soon in BOBF, just for them to be on screen together ready for Season 3 of the Mandalorian. My point is Disney basically looked at the cost of the Acolyte, and that massive cost simply did NOT justify the amount of Viewership that show got when the Disney bosses looked at all the graphs and barcharts of Acolyte's viewing figures. I just wish all the Acolyte fans would honestly realize this, but this whole "Culture War" going on within our Entertainment and beloved franchises, between the Right and the Left, it's just getting ridiculous. Honestly the best thing Disney and Lucasfilm can do right now to ease this whole massive Division between left/right leaning fans, I mean between even Acolyte and Sequels fans and the Rest of the Starwars Fandom (who basically don't like those two things); is for them to just make a comic book or novelization that basically wraps up and concludes Osha & Qimir's stories. AND Master Vernastra, how exactly she is able to cover up all that sh*t that went down (which logically considering we see Yoda, still seems like a big stretch to me personally but whatever). Then Lucasfilm/Disney should really just start ADAPTING some of the beloved *Legends" stories into like CW/Bad Batch Animated style one off series or movies. AND make the writing really good! Like Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi quality level of writing!! So that those adaps can be 100% FAITHFUL to those "Legends" stories. This would bring back so many of these disillusioned starwars fans who simply do not like anything Disney has been doing lately. Disney and Lucasfilm really need to understand they're NEVER going to get most these oldskool starwars fans to embrace and accept their "Disney Canon" because that canon is a sheer mess! It's inconsistent that's why so many of the fans just don't take it seriously. And it's really no good just taking the attitude of - "well those oldskool fans are ALL WHITE MEN in their 50s/60s so we don't need them anyway." NO! that's bigoted in of itself to think like that because there are plenty of Black/Latino Ethnic older starwars fans, they're simply NOT all white men. AND those fans have Families of their own, raising they kids to NOT follow the new stuff, but only appreciate the older starwars, and just actual good Disney starwars stuff like "Jedi Fallen Order" the Mandalorian and Rogue One & Andor. Disney really need start thinking of BOTH sides of this fandom now.

Disappointing. Disney needed to separate the online propaganda from reality. The "fans" that attacked The Acolyte had a problem with the director, one actor, and a few comments they made. This point was proven by the review bombing before the first episode even aired. This whole saga has just shown what a toxic cesspool the Star Wars "Fandumb Menace" has become. The fact that Disney has given into it has just given them more power going forward. Sad.

SW fan since 77. I'm in my fifties. I have seen fandom shift in many places, politically, socially and entertainment based as well. Small voices with big megaphones lately. There were plenty y of flaws but they are show flaws, not life flaws. People should grow up but we know, they don't have to unfortunately (I'm a parent of a new trans adult child recently, also a big DEI advocate at work but I'm a regular guy with regular thoughts) Totally agree with all you said. I think if movies are where they are going, and I like that, it should be television movies for the streaming shows and movie movies for the announcements made. Make an Acolyte sequel movie and make a Solo sequel movie on Disney plus. Close out the storylines. Make landos movie on Disney plus. Obi wan/Vader movie too. Close out the loose threads. That's four films right there for Disney plus. The rest in the big screen You're welcome 😂. Been a listener of you since Jedi council! -Barsnobs Mike DeMarino . Be well!

I want to echo what others are saying here, but thank you, ForceCenter. I loved listening to your reviews and reflections on each episode. I loved The Acolyte and I'm really disappointed and angry that it wasn't renewed for a second season. As a person of color and longtime Star Wars fan (and prequelist), I really appreciate Jennifer's perspectives about the show. Also, I'm still upset about Willow not having a season 2 and being removed. Can't help but notice that both of these shows focused on women relationships, had queer representation, featured people of color in leading roles, and subverted expectations in a meaningful and positive way.

This is a shame. I feel as though if you start a project, it should be finished and not shelved. Perhaps lucasfilm should allow creators to finish their work. Solo was also a victim of this. I know it's often money that drives these choices but i could damage any brand to show non-commitment to finishing a show.
@Vulcanerd

@@gaznottingham9652 This is where that clash happens between corporations and creatives. Corporations don’t exist on their own in a vacuum and need creatives to push product. Creatives don’t have the financial muscle on their own (or rarely in the cases of someone like Lucas originally or Kevin Smith) so rely on corporations to provider them with the finances and logistics to realize their creations. Both need money to exist or even thrive so it feels like money winds up being the main factor in determining “success” and “failure”.

This is a very important episode of Force Center because it speaks to my ongoing frustrations with the toxic online Star Wars environment. I was worried going in about how the culture wars would would play into the reaction to The Acolyte and my worst fears have been realized. This movement has the potential to cause so much more damage, particularly to the Rey movie,. Even Skeleton Crew could get bombed and ripped apart. To me, The Acolyte is one of the best Star Wars shows. I'm depressed about us not getting another season. There are far too many so called fans who are out to destroy Star Wars. Yeah, I mentioned this already in the previous video, but I’m pretty bummed about it. I think it had a lot of things to offer going forward with a chance to see what actual Sith training looked like with Qimir and Osha. Would Plagueis have been involved, what’s the fallout for Vernestra and the Jedi, if any, for the coverup, would we have seen a full circle confrontation with Osha and Mae if Vernestra trained her? Oh, yeah, and Koril. Oof, definitely feeling the pain of anyone who’s had their favorite thing end prematurely.

While I had my issues with some of the pacing and character motivations in The Acolyte I was really hoping the story would continue especially after some of the teases we got at the end. If given another season the show could have improved on some of the first seasons issues and come out greater by the end rhe show had potential. The issue at hand is not whether the show was good or bad. Disney seems to have given in to the negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, resulting in many Star Wars fans refusing to watch the series based on those slanted viewpoint. This led to low viewership and re-viewership on Disney+. Disney seems to have ignored this and decided to cancel the series solely based on those metrics, which is a bad decision. If all viewers had a chance to form their own opinions based on viewership numbers, the decision to pull Acolyte could have been different. By doing so, Disney has allowed the "Haters" to succeed and award their effort. This may backfire with Disney in the long run, as the haters could impact future series releases based on personal opinions on Director and Actors. In the end, it seems like the haters will influence what Disney produces. Is this really what Disney wants in the end? Now that Disney has canceled The Acolyte, its remaining fans feel betrayed and may want to join hate groups, making their effort even more successful.
@joncarroll2040
@joncarroll2040 23 дня назад

Hey, Tony! Good to see ya here. Disney didn't cave to negative reviews. The basis of the decision is _Return on Investment._ The review bombing hurt the series a lot. Even my friends "heard it wasn't very good." The rage baiters will take this as a win for them and they'll never learn from it. *The Acolyte* will continue in books, and I hope the characters will be seen in other series. They didn't win. They only removed it from their limited views. It will continue, just not on TV.

The show is objectively bad. The story, the script, dialogue, acting, plot holes, I struggled to get through each episode and physically winced multiple times at the poor acting. Osha's manic behavior and sudden character arc (there was absolutely no development, she just suddenly switches to the dark side.), the poor chemistry between characters. It is just a painfully bad show.

The point of this is ROI. Disney tried some things with TV to make their platform work. Bob Iger decided what works is what gets turned into movies and what doesn't work well gets turned into books. They get a bigger _return on investments_ with movies in any case. Subscribers on streaming services has become as expensive as cable to keep them all.

Because of streaming, Disney knows who bail on shows, re-watches, picks up later, etc…they know at an intimate level how their customers are interacting with their content. That intel informs their decisions. Negative online discussions is something they are aware of but it’s nothing compared to the viewership analytics…it’s really that straightforward.

But accepting it for the time being, I feel like aside from the twins and the Plaugeis of it all I can connect it to TPM. That final scene with Vern going to Yoda is what helps me settle it. Like, without seeing the conversation I can assume she told him what’s up and that leads to Yoda learning/knowing of the Rule of Two and adds context to him swapping looks with Mace when Qui-Gon breaks the news about fighting Maul.

It plays into an issue from throughout Acolyte’s run, it has been covered by the media with a slant (intentional or not, malicious or not) towards the negative and angry perspective. For instance, there were RU-vid critics who I follow, reasonable critics, who reviewed this show and followed it regularly in a way they hadn’t been for other D+ Star Wars shows. Obviously you go where the clicks are, this was something new and much talked about. And while I’m sure they were genuine in their critical response to the show (and this goes for anyone acting in good faith) they were nevertheless feeding the monster! Same thing Deadline is doing with that headline. Idk what to do about it, but in our current media climate you have to be AWARE of the CONTEXT and be AWARE of how it will be RECEIVED. You have to be aware of how your words and thoughts could be used. As Obi-Wan said about Luke’s feelings, “they do you credit but they could be used to serve the emperor.” It’s not enough to start every review with the caveat that what you’re about to say has nothing to do with the diversity of the cast. If you know how it will sound and that makes you uncomfortable, maybe you shouldn’t say it? TL;DR I’m bummed by this news and by the state of the industry and of “fandom.”

Good points! And thank you for always having a positive view of things, too much hate out there as it is in the fandom. While I did not enjoy the Acolyte myself, it had nothing to do with whatever hype was around it among the haters. Rather the story and characters failed on several levels, to me that is. As a queer person myself, I was looking forward to this show, alas, it had none of the ingredients I expected it to have. But, I would have loved to have seen the continuation of the story just the same as the premise was good, the force witches, the younger Jedi, Sol, they were all interesting alas the show did not give them time to grow, it felt, rushed somehow, the whole story. But that’s just me. Nothing to do with any other thing, than the story and character failing for me, personally. Guess it’s all up to fan fiction now to wrap this story up now!?

I was (and admittedly still am) a little devastated upon hearing this news. The Acolyte was a show I wasn't particularly excited about but it really grabbed me. I've rewatched it 3 times and found new things to appreciate each time. It's one of the very few SW shows I really loved and not just "kinda liked" like the rest. For the first time since the first two seasons of Mando was I actively counting down the days till the next episode and it was a rush to be that excited about Star Wars again. So yeah now I'm just left devastated and kinda angry with no clear target for that anger.

I loved The Acolyte. It seems pretty irresponsible of Lucasfilm to have a huge reveal of a character like Plagueis in live action for the first time without having solid plans of moving forward with the story. I know the story still counts and everything that happened is canon, but it just feels like sort of a waste. Now, they could always continue Plagueis' story elsewhere and maybe even involve characters we saw in this show but that would just seem to be an odd decision to just pluck "things that worked" in this show and continue them elsewhere. The state of the entertainment industry is just sad right now. We are in a transition period and fans are suffering for it while the studios try to figure it out. Studios need to have more loyalty to projects they invest in and stop being so reactive to the negative voices that are often louder and fewer than the positive. How do they even know that the negative voices are actually interested in, watching, or giving the show/movie a fair shot. People these days are swayed too much by others' opinions which just spreads negativity like wildfire.

The word cancelled didn't stand out to me, I think because I'm still used to the old days where all the networks would announce their fall schedules during the same week and you'd find out if the shows you liked were cancelled or renewed all at once. But as I'm typing this I'm getting it more that with streaming the assumption is kind of that any season of a show is a one-off thing and occasionally we get more whereas with broadcast the assumption was that any show that made it to the end of the season was going to come back unless it got cancelled so that's no longer the appropriate term for choosing not to make more beyond whatever had been ordered that far.

I love this podcast. It's nice to see people discussing things in a diplomatic way and personal way without having to tell and argue. I can see that all three have different tastes and views but at the end they can all enjoy star wars in their way and discuss it. That's intelectual. I like this show a lot and I was hoping to see a season two. I would prefer a thousand times this show over mando. Mando feels too safe. In all ways. This was fresh and new. Challenging. It opened a lot of discussion. I wanted to see so much more of Qimir. He is one of the best villains in starwafs since Vader. And I like how they portrayed the Jedi. It was very close to real life spiritual leaders. And I liked that the sith weren't just this crazy evil guys. Qimir had a backstory and reason. In some ways america feels to me like it chases the extremes, and a lot of middleground is just ignored or seen as unimportant. And I completly disagree. I bring this up because I feel like this show is turning into a battleground of absolutes, either your with the show. Or your it's enemy. As we know only Sith deal in absolutes. For me, it was the obvious attempt to attract the “Yasss Queen” and Twitter stan audience that turned me off. My 52 year old father who grew up with Alien, E.T, Close Encounters and Star Wars (like many others) can’t relate to the audience this is meant for: 21-28 year old women that love a modern pop song, love watching a guy get undressed and walk slowly out of the water with a full 8-pack and love to hear that it’s the “gayest Star Wars ever”. And thus, it’s not a show that everyone can enjoy (not that every show should be catered to everyone) I don’t have any problem with targeting a specific audience for your show but then I’d say don’t be shocked when your ratings aren’t strong. If the audience was there for this, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

But Star Wars is about generational change. Literally how this entire thing started. An old warrior says this isn't my fight and the sword is passed to those coming up behind him. And we wouldn't be having this conversation if more people understood that. I'm 48. And one of the most important personal evolutions I went through was realizing that not every story needs to be for you. Like your father, I grew up on films and shows that spoke directly to me; and us as a generation. Now it's time for others to hear their stories. Don't fight change, find your place in change. I love that this show spoke to so many people. I celebrate that. Mourn its loss because of that. And this show -- or any Star Wars show -- is never for one specific audience. Never. Absolutely never. If you can't find your own truth reflected in the rather simple and direct universal themes presented in this show, then how are you watching these things? What are you looking for in your favorite art? You're missing out on so much! So much good stuff. And why -- because a guy took his shirt off? There are many reasons this show did not make it to season two. Some are on-screen reasons for sure, but mostly it was due to a drastically and rapidly changing business model -- despite many in this comment section not wanting to acknowledge how much that was a factor. Not because anyone there said, "Ok, hear me out, let's go for the Yasss Queen audience." And, come on, listen to a modern pop song. I'll make a playlist.
@LachlanMorris
@LachlanMorris 22 дня назад
@@KenNapzok Thank you for replying respectfully, Ken. Even when I came into the comment section heated haha. I know deep down that this feeling stems from me being frustrated that Star Wars recently hasn't felt like what I grew up with. I didn't hate this show at all, my frustration was in the feeling of indifference that I had which I've never felt with Star Wars. I do have to accept that not everything will tonally be what I'm looking for and I would, of course, love more people to get into Star Wars (it was pretty much my entire childhood). I feel like there’s still an opportunity down the line to revisit this part of the timeline. The general consensus from what I’ve gathered is that when the show focused on The Stranger, it was really popping off the screen. Perhaps a one off movie to fill that gap with The Stranger possibly forming the Knights of Ren? The Kylo Ren theme kept repeating over and over and I don’t think that was a coincidence. And despite what any negative comments may say, Lee Jung-Jae acted his Jedi Robes off. I was so impressed with his performance as Master Sol. At least he got a complete arc through the entire season. And I will get a collectible of Master Sol for my Star Wars collection and as an ode to the show. Curiously on the business side now that Dave Filoni is VEEP of content for Lucasfilm, he may be influential in getting another crack at this story. My understanding is this show was green lit, written, and shot while he was still learning from Jon Favreau about live action work and forming Ahsoka. I think this show had been sitting on the shelf for a year or so after its completion. Never say never.

I had an elevator pitch with all of the high points (low knowledge barrier to entry, diversity on both sides of the camera, a fun new time period to explore) and I shared it with anyone who seemed interested. I had a rebuttal prepared for each bad faith argument I expected to encounter. I wasn’t even sure I would enjoy the show, because I didn’t like Russian Doll and don’t care for EU/Legends… I just thought it was absolutely important that this endeavor be a success. I did end up watching every episode, but I had to bail on the discourse completely. It wasn’t even the bigots and misogynists that got to me; as a Missourian raised in the church, I have heard a lot of hate speech (though as a cishet white woman I have not often had it directed at me). It was the gleeful spewing of anti-Jedi venom by so-called fans who cannot abide a hero*. That Sithlatoxin proved to be much more difficult to filter out, and I’ve got no air to spare in praise of the Dark. So I will not be fighting the good fight for renewal of this series, but I do hope there will be future storytelling with different perspectives and more diversity on both sides of the camera.

*Yes, individual Jedi made mistakes, and yes, the Jedi as an organization failed the galaxy when they became overly dogmatic and allowed the Senate to make them their attack dogs. As you all pointed out, this is not a new concept in Star Wars, and it is increasingly important in the real world to hold the people in power to a higher standard. But that is what the Jedi as a whole do… they strive for peace and put the good of the galaxy above their own needs. Those lofty ideals require discipline and lifelong dedication, which is why they eschew attachment and start their training at a young age. They are not baby stealing autocrats who hate love.

Good shows normally get renewed, but not all the time, and I don't believe that's what has happened here. I feel bummed for people who wanted the story continued, but I blame Disney for not making a good show. I believe anyone can look and see that HOTD with HALF the budget of The Accolyte made a product 10 times better. No "hate" derailed HOTD because most people love it, and Accolyte didn't fail from "hate", most people just didn't like it.

@@reshanner Every single person I follow or who follow me on Insta loved that show, flaws and all. YOU like HOTD, I don't, I find GoT to be rather stupid. The show wasn't canceled, it just wasn't renewed, same with Gina Carrano, she can claim she was fired but in fact her contract wasn't renewed. Oh and Disney didn't make Acolyte, Lucasfilm did, and considering the number of shows that don't even get out of development there it's obvious that Lucasfilm was very supportive of the show as it was. YOU didn't like it, that's fine, please remember that toxic line when you start to declare that everyone didn't.

@@thegrahamdalorian185 if you want to blame "hate" for the show not being renewed that's cool, but I think that's redicilous. I have to assume that's what you're saying since you replied to my comment about online hate ending the show. Regardless, it matters not, the show is no more.
