From everything Leslie Headland said, The Acolyte was gonna be a dark, Sith oriented, Drew Karpyshyn styled story. This was gonna be in a show done in the spirit of Kotor and The Old Republic era. This all turned out to be lies. A smoke screen. A desperate attempt by Disney to con people into seeing this show. Because, in reality, this show can best be describes as "cute" or just straight up CW television. Couldn't be more different than what they promised, which obviously makes the disappointment that much greater...
They also marketed The Acolyte with heavy emphasis on the Sith/Dark figure with the red lightsaber and Carrie-Anne Moss, even putting her on posters. She’s killed in the first 8 minutes of the first episode. Yeah, she’s going to show up in flashbacks, but it still feels like the marketing used her to hype the show up, to get more viewers, and then yank the carpet out from under your feet.
Very few people watched Andor (relatively speaking), and many that did said it was too boring and didn’t give it a chance. Saying “it’s not Star Wars”.
Rocha is not well. He and Campea have caught the same bug. At least Campea used to be epically entertaining and original. Rocha has always been and continues to be 😴
Depends on who those kinds of people are that jump on and talk about it? Most people would think it’d be normal to have an authentic conversation about that show whether they like it or not but that’s hard even for some nowadays. I am convinced Star Wars is just better enjoyed when you’re not online consuming the filth of social media.
Here's a fun anecdotal story. A friend just got a new job. He says the first day he was there everyone else who works there was talking about Star Wars and some of them have SW stuff on their desks. In the first week they talked about Rogue One being the best movie. Then a few weeks later, last week, one of the guys with a Darth Vader statue comments to my friend about the force impregnation acting like it's a totally new thing, and my friend comments to him "Yeah, like Anakin" and the guy says "Oh, I didn't know that". And these people in general at this workplace are all enjoying The Acolyte. These are the types of people who like Star Wars (and Marvel and etc) that aren't terminally online, and they wouldn't know or care about the RT viewer rating.
Exactly. The normal people that actually like these things just watch it and move on, they do go on RT to positively rate it. Acolyte was the most viewed Disney+ premiere this year, no way did 85% of them all hate it and go downvote it online.

Fanbase so toxic that when people who genuinely don't like it, get accused of review bombing. Andor had minority lead characters, strong female characters, a very diverse cast but it was very good and the review scores proved it. As long as it's good, most people don't care about anything else. Forgot to mention there's also a gay relationship between Vel & Cinta. That checks all that boxes yet somehow, it's considered one of the best of Disney Star Wars.

The “audience” reaction is completely mired in a number of factors, including a very online reactionary for the sake of it bloc. However, none of this phenomenon takes place if Star Wars hadn’t been compromised by Disney on the cinematic and mythological level. A fundamental breaking of faith has occurred that hasn’t been restored, regardless of some instances of quality output from Disney. There is no faith that the studio sees Star Wars as anything more than content, when the audience sees it as the most important canon of modern mythology. That breach isn’t going to be fixed until the studio treats it like cinema, not content. That it all matters on the deepest of levels. We are a long way away from that.
The main problem with Disney/Lucasfilm is that they don’t care about the original Star Wars fanbase, and have even said as much openly. They are trying to create their own fanbase, who are much younger. But the majority of the money comes from the old school Star Wars fans, their current target audience is kids or teenagers, who have no money. If you had two options open to you, established fanbase, or new fanbase which is a unknown figure. From a business perspective, surely you would go after the money, or target the audience that can make you the most money. But for some reason, Disney keep targeting the smaller audience. They’re weird.
You have to bring in a new audience. The old audience is going to get, well, old and leave. Then what? I’m not defending Disney, but you have to keep the fanbase fresh

Aside from a gripe about the Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan Kenobi fight in A New Hope, most people enjoy those movies. Which means that they a universal appeal. But modern Disney writers don't really understand what it is about those movies that people actually enjoy, which is why their new stories fall flat.
20:50... I think Andor was very good and Ahsoka did okay for having many (if not the majority) of characters being women. It isn't about gender, it is about writing. Just look at House of the Dragon. The two primary characters were girls and now women, and it is such a good show.

The makeup is very poor at times, like 90s Star Trek. Some of the sets look cheap and fake and it breaks immersion. The directing is so bad they managed to make Dafne Keene look poor as an actress. They look like fans cos playing in a budgeted fan production, the effects are poor, the writing awful. Fn sad.

Took my 6 year old daughter to the movies for her first time to see Inside Out 2. She loved it! As soon as we got out, she saw a poster for the new Minions movie and wanted to go to that, haha. Was a great day!
The REAL disconnect is that 85% of “critics” actually think The Acolyte is GOOD! That, alone, is why I never trust Rotten Tomatoes anymore. I use IMDb and Letterboxd ratings to judge a movie before I watch it (if I need help deciding to watch it, which is not always).
I don't even think lots of the people are sexist or homophobic when they complain about "woke". Lot's of people are sick of being pandered to like as if disney or any of the companies could give 2 sh**s about any of the causes they champion. Look how they edit posters and movies for China. Don't push pride in the middle east etc It's just a big joke. So when you see they are lining up all these woman, minorities, and LGBT people for brownie points it's disgusting and it also takes away from the creative people who just want to make great inclusive shows. Not inclusive mediocre shows.
Rocha's point 17:20 is spot on. Simply put, that's it right there. And Disney Star Wars doubling down on "its just the toxic community" makes the divide and frustration all the more worse, unfortunately.

I dont think The Boys, House of Dragon and The Bear being adult oriented. I think its just a matter of writing. Those 3 shows are written extremely well and Acolyte is just not up to snuff with them.

I’ve mentioned it before here, but Dark Matter is also my favorite show on TV right now. It’s great, the cast/story is so intriguing, and Edgerton is the best I’ve ever seen considering what he’s doing.
Disney isnt doing themselves any favors by releasing these shows weekly unfortunately. I think if a show is under 45 minutes an episode and less than 10 episodes, it needs to be a drop all at once show.
Mainstream audiences may not know Anya Taylor Joy’s name but they definitely recognise her face. You brought up Millie Bobbie Brown but she has zero box office imprint and I suspect most mainstream viewers would struggle to name her correctly.

its not just about the Acolyte. People are fed up with Disney Star Wars. Year after year, series after series of mid or downright trash writing and productions. Fans want better stories, better execution of said stories, and The Acolyte is almost like a final straw. At what point do we start holding Dave Filoni responsible? I mean, he saw the dailies, he signed off on all of these decisions. At what point do we start criticizing him? And it's fair to do so. If you gave us amazing storytelling we wouldnt be having this conversation every year.
Filoni has not signed off on all the decisions lol, he only just became CCO recently. Before that he was really more so a hired hand for animation and doing Mandalorian.

The problem with going back to Brendok several times during the 8 episodes is it takes away from the actual storyline, just like episode 3 is. If you spend too much time in flashbacks, you never give yourself a chance to make a compelling story
Disney paid critics to give this show high ratings. I know this because in all the promotional ads on instagram when the show first released, every single comment was talking VERY highly of this show when the general audience was not enjoying the first two episodes. It was obvious that Disney was paying people to leave positive comments.
I am the most casual Star Wars fan on the planet, so much so that at the end of last year, I decided Star Wars just wasn't for me anymore and I completely blocked anything to do with it out of my life, and then I started hearing and seeing the hype for The Acolyte start to ramp up and I got excited about it. I saw the cast, and I love Carrie Ann Moss, I love Amandla Stenberg, so I was hyped for it... I've watched all the episodes that have come thus far, and I don't hate it, I'm actually quite enjoying it. Some of the acting is not fully up to par. Some of the storyline isn't fully gripping me, and I'm feeling like a very "inside baseball" sense of responsibility to go back and watch other parts of the lore to understand what's going on but I like the show, I keep going back to watch each week, so it's clearly doing something right for me. I like it, and I think I'm gonna finish it and make up my own mind as to how I feel about it overall.
The Acolyte was DEFINITELY review bombed. There are LOTS of people out there who like it but those who hate are making the loudest noise. Each time I log into YT almost every video that pops up is hyperbolic nonsense about LESBIAN WITCHES etc. The Acolyte is a gift that keeps on giving for those Anti-Woke YT channels. Midnight’s Edge and The Critical Drinker make multiple videos each week all saying the exact same thing - over and over again. Yawn.

Despite what the anti-woke trolls cry about, the obvious DEI and lesbian undertones aren't the problem. It's the poor execution, the convoluted and contrived story, lame dialogue, illogical character actions, wooden acting, the cringe chanting/gyrating/yelping/heavy breathing/eye rolling ("The power of one, the power of two, the power of many!"), excessive kung-fu fighting, cosplay costumes, cheap-looking cinematography, and especially the retconning of Star Wars lore. Mark Hamill has expressed his disappointment with Star Wars' current direction. In recent interviews, George Lucas commented that "nobody understands the Force" and that the focus has shifted away from telling a good story. Then there are the problematic actors, like Charlie Barnett. He claimed he's a fan but constantly proves he knows nothing about Star Wars. During his Star Wars Celebration interview, he stated, "the best parts about Star Wars is there is no good or evil." During his press tour, he said Vader is just "a bad person," that "Anakin blew up the Death Star" and "possibly killed millions and millions of people." And for a series with a huge budget, it doesn't look cinematic. #FYI: the budget for The Acolyte ($180M-200M) was one of Disney's most expensive. Factoring in some inflation, compare that to each season of Game of Thrones ($60M-100M), House of the Dragon ($190M), The Boys ($90M), or the films Dune ($165M), Dune 2 ($190M), Blade Runner 2049 ($185M), Mad Max: Fury Road ($155M-185M), Harry Potter ($100M-150M), and Lord of the Rings/Hobbit ($93M-180M). Rocha stating that the rest of the series needs to be watched before we judge is wrong.

As someone who saw the original Star Wars as an 8 yo kid, I have no idea how or why the Star Wars fans have gone bonkers.Can everyone just relax. I cannot click on any reccomended Star Wars content without extremists behaving like it's serious politics and religion. Regardless if you like it or not, Imagine if kids at my age at the time of the original had ecountered this crap?
The ancient period of Star Wars is without doubt the most esthetically pleasing and most intriguing part of Star Wars. Though not canon yet, Old Republic and it's visual depictions of planets, garb, lightsabers, droids and the overall politics and ancient force wielding is fucking insane. They literally have the second coming of Star Wars right under their nose, but aren't using it. PS. High Republic was cooler in Jedi: Survivor than Acolyte.
I am loving The Acolyte right now. I do not get the hate. I do not tend to agree with you on movies/shows though. My rating may change as the show moves on, deciding as of episode 3 is a bit premature.

Like complaining how we don’t know what something means or who someone is, when any sensible person knows how shows work and is waiting to see what the answers will be. The fans are always right. The critics are either bought and paid for or just outright shills for their own benefit. I don't even look at the critic score anymore, I only trust the audience rating. And you just watch. One of these days, they're gonna take that away from us, just like they did the dislike button on RU-vid when one of the videos they endorsed got correctly dumped on. Then we won't know what's up except to search out trusted individual reviews.
This story, like most modern Star Wars stories, is written, directed, and produced by people who don't care about Star Wars, aren't qualified to make Star Wars, and the fanbase is over it. Make escapism not activism.
It's not even about "triggering the other side" anymore... The same side is also getting tired of it. I'm in the same political spectrum as "the outlaw", so are my family and friends and everyone is just tired of it all. 100% agree about tailoring the budget better to the size of the potential audience (that's a business no brainer) On one side you have trolls, but on the other you have the "gatekeepers" who get to decide what criticism is valid and to be honest, more and more fans don't want to be associated with the fandom because of how toxic the culture around it has become.

Kristian was speaking facts about Obi Wan woulda been more successful had they focused on Obi Wan and Anakin. I would’ve thought that that would’ve been the obvious direction but apparently not. Same with Mando season 1 and 2 and Andor, those were great. I just wish they would understand how much those original 6 films mean to people like me. I don’t want to sound hateful by saying I don’t want to be distracted by the politics they are trying to push.
I think there’s some great points on the discourse around Acolyte. I do think that the dumb sexist/racist incel critiques are used to invalidate legitimate criticism. A while back there was an interview where Kennedy responded to a question about critiques of the sequel trilogy with only talking about the abuse Kelley Marie-Tran suffered. And that was horrible, but it doesn’t invalidate some of the legitimate criticisms of the ST. But those more inflammatory comments often overshadow the nuanced and level headed critiques.
I’m with you! I love House of the Dragon! So happy it’s back, best show on tv. Truthfully I was never huge on game of thrones, I like it but not like this.

Big studios often didn’t want to admit that “conservative” male audiences that grow and maintain the fanbase from the inception of the IP to this day (comic, film etc.) That what happens to Marvel and their tv show after endgame And the moment Kennedy declare force is women, it shows that Lucasfilm abandon their fanbase
To your guys point on making quality stuff, Beau Demayo was on a podcast and mentioned how to handle messaging in your shows and that people can do it, but they need to check themselves before inserting it and make sure it makes sense within the story etc. You guys should find it and watch the panel he was on because he makes so many great points and gives some insight into how he wrote the show.
I agree with you both I do think there are legitimate concerns with Acolyte, but these hate groups that scream "woke" really muddy the waters, thank you John also for being a strong advocate and positive voice, love you both, hope this show gets better.
It’s not because people are racist or homophobic. People do not like the show. The problem with this whole narrative is that plenty of things have female leads, minority characters, gay characters and are well received. Take everything Everywhere All at Once for example. It is a story about an Asian family and a mother accepting her daughter as a lesbian. People liked it because it was well done and interesting with good characters.
The racist/homophobic etc. aspects are because a lot of toxic fans genuinely do write negative comments and reviews focusing on those aspects. The fact that the show isn't great doesn't help. But it's hard to deny those toxic fans are out there and very vocal online.

I personally have not seen many people saying that the reason the show is bad is because of the race or sexuality of characters. (Obviously it would be wrong to do so, don’t watch it if you don’t want) but I have seen people complain that the show seems to make Star Wars try to reflect a very 2024 modern political landscape. I think that is a valid criticism that shouldn’t just be thrown out as being “racist” I guess the good thing about tv and movies is you ca. like what you want 🤷🏼♂️ I personally love rewatching the first Suicide Squad even though most hate it. One of them got offended when I pointed out that the toxic fandom existed, saying it was his right to hate whoever he likes. I just feel like Lucas Film isn’t taking care of Star Wars. Yes, Dave filoni and Jon Favreau are massive fans of Star Wars. However, I feel like they are hiring directors and writers who don’t have a resume of making quality films and tv and also dont understand how much Star Wars means to the fans. I’d love to see them hire more people like Tony Gilroy (Andor was great!). Sometimes it seems like they are trying to preach a message that has to do with real world issues instead of letting the audience get transported to a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, where we ultimately want to forget about problems in this world. It’s heartbreak to me to see how far the quality has fallen off from what George was doing. The fact that The Book of Boba fett, Obi Wan, The Acolyte, and the Mandalorian is in the same universe as Empire strikes back and revenge of the sith doesn’t compute with me.

That there is black guy or a female in the lead not that I care because there have been plenty of good movies with black actors or females in the lead so that is bullshit. Yeah so you're one of the fans who just don't like the quality of the shows. There's nothing wrong with that. I like The Acolyte so far, but I don't love it. But I am interested to see where it goes . I think the Disney influence has been affecting all these shows, making sure that they're geared towards kids (at least to some degree), at the expense of better writing.
People should stop put so much faith into scores on movie websites like Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB. The only people that care about them are fanboys / haters when they need an easy way to defend their opinions.

I watched the first two episodes with a friend who's about ten years younger than me. We both thought it was pretty awful, and it didn't help they killed Trinity like 10 seconds into the season. I don't know about anyone else but my first thought was: hey cool they imported her mostly intact from the Matrix, that's a neat angle. And then: oh she was just brought in to die to this person who challenges her with one of the weirdest lines anyone's ever heard. This is coming from someone who likes strong female leads. I stan for Captain Marvel, The Old Guard, and any other dope women doing dope things. Beyond some OK choreography (it's a little creaky in spots), this show offers very little.
They're both right, although "professional critics" truly don't understand it. It's a peculiar variant of "so bad it's good". Except traditionally that refers to a movie or series that has horrible effects, ridiculous tropes or blatant mistakes. Acolyte however is competently made, par for the course. BUT the shock is in the complete heresy to Lucas' Jedi and the Force that's presented here. Genuine Star Wars fans are literally watching it with their hands in front of his their mouths. "Are they really doing this...?!" The audacity of it all makes it a must-watch. I can't wait for the next episode, and then watch hours and hours on RU-vid of fans taking it apart, and rightly so.. ..from a particular point of view.. The critics and the extremist wokist fringe will never get it. Heck, Lucasfilm will never get it. Oh and Squid Game Jedi is a revelation. Knocks it out of the park with frankly the best Jedi since Alec Guinness.
To showcase how insufferable and obnoxious Rocha is...I'm an extremely progressive Black dude who was trying to point out the fact that Andor was able to showcase and incorporate diverse characters into their story without receiving backlash or being labeled "woke"...and Rocha completely dismissed the point (although Kristian understood) and began spouting his revisionist history Disney narratives. The reason Andor didn't have high viewership was because it was an obscure character, political drama, that didn't include any Jedi or Sith lightsaber action. The main criticism of the show was folks hoping that the Emperor or Darth Vader showed up. NOBODY was complaining about the lesbian couple, the mixed race couple, female lead characters etc. Those are just the Disney talking points and scapegoat excuses whenever their projects fail.
Acolyte is shite,that's the truth,Headley admitted what the show is about,when you make a show about an agenda instead of a story and character its gonna turn out bad,make a great story and character,if In making that show the character turns out gay/black whatever then it won't affect the show,the show is a piece of activism

Big Star Wars fan, the Acolyte is the first show I’m completely sitting out of. Haven’t really enjoyed what they’ve been putting out as much as I’d hoped, I don’t have the time to watch something that’s probably not aimed at me
Why does “review bombing” only goes one way? We all know the studios own these sites & they should probably take longer look at how multiple movies have a huge gap.
Audience score for tv is completely unregulated, for movies it is a truer indicator. So it's a waste of time to look compare (and we all know how this song and dance goes anyway) Unsure if it's talked about today but kind of disappointed Peele's new movie isn't out for another 2 and a half years, did see henry selick signed up to direct a new neil gaimen adaptation which makes me happy though!

If everything that has the word acolyte in it on rotten tomatoes is getting tanked by audience reviews that pretty much tells you that it’s not legit it’s just haters going to complain
