After the success of Belle & Sebastian, Nickelodeon went looking for another Japanese anime adaptation of French literature about boy cross the European countryside. We explore The Adventures of the Little Prince, from it's origins as a book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, to its rough journey to animation, and finally its hack-and-slash English localization.

It's really disappointing to see how poorly this show was handled. I would love to see a full television adaptation of the book that captures the essence of it, all of its melancholy and wonder, all of its nostalgia and harsh reality. I've heard the animated film adaptation from a few years ago is really good, though.

Fun fact... Little Prince had the same character designer as Chargeman Ken - Eiji Tanaka, who also worked on Speed Racer. And none other than Yoshikazu Yasuhiko also did character design work, apparently in between working on Zambot 3 and Gundam. A lot of the voice actors in the English dub worked on the Christian radio drama Adventures in Odyssey as well - it's easy to hear "Connie Kendall," "Mr. Whittaker" and "Tom Riley" in some of the voices.

Not having watched this show when it aired on Nick, as you described the localization, I had a feeling Jameson Brewer's name would show up. The "pretending Earth of a specific time period is many other alien planets" and pretending deaths didn't occur and changing plots in ways that ran counter to the animation was an approach he took when localizing Gatchaman for Sandy Frank as "Battle of the Planets."
@ChristopherSobieniak
@ChristopherSobieniak 4 года назад
Yep, that show was pretty much ripped a new one with what Brewer brought to the table. A lot of violence removed and often scenes were padded out when they cut them so short. Unlike The Little Prince, Battle of the Planets had the luxury of new crappy animation inserted to show us a new character who acts as narrator and scenes of the crew in a rec room doing pointless things!
@ChuckD79
@ChuckD79 3 года назад
Looks like Sandy Frank's people had a hand in the localization of TLP, as well...associate producer Irving Klein and production manager Kenneth Urheim had previously worked on Frank's early 80s musical game show, Face the Music.

I don't get why adults treat kids like they're stupid, just because they're not old enough to learn certain things yet, especially when it comes to animation, like the "Little Prince" anime. In the Japanese version, the focus was on the old man. In the Jambre version, they thought Yuri the bear would have more appeal to children (young kids care far more for a cute baby bear than for a bearded old man, right?), and God forbid he died during the episode, so the focus is on Yuri the bear, and his death was retconned by the dub/localization. "The village children the Little Prince fetched to the gravesite took him to the vet" is the best thing you can say to appease the young audience!
@ChristopherSobieniak
@ChristopherSobieniak 4 года назад
Though not a lot is known of Jambre Productions, I suppose the name itself is really based on the first three letters of the first and last name for Jameson Brewer, producer and writer for the dubbing of The Little Prince. I'm guessing this was his company he founded at the time and the type of people he worked with (the voice cast weren't nobodies in the field so he had credentials to hire what he thought was the best). Jameson Brewer previously worked on Battle of the Planets, that show was the nadir of how far an Americanized take on a Japanese property could be when an earthbound team can fly through space and battle an alien army without even fighting. I could see how he honed his skills on adapting a Japanese cartoon in the manner he saw fit than to rely on accuracy or sticking to the script.
@ChuckD79
@ChuckD79 2 года назад
Amusingly, Jambre's reworking of the premise (having TLP travel from his home planet in each episode, then return home at the end) directly contradicts the lyrics of the American closing theme: "He comes from somewhere/A world way out there/And he hasn't been back since..." (perhaps the lyrics were written with the original Japanese plot in mind?)

Also now I know the name of the studio who gave us Chargeman Ken and Astroganga, Astroganga is actually quite popular in Arabic countries after it was dubbed in the 80s, which was distributed to capitalize on the popularity of Toei's mecha anime series UFO Robo Grendizer, Grendizer was a major phenomenon and helped popularize the Anime genre in the Arabic part of the Middle East.

One theory about why they changed the story to make the little boy be on a series of round trips: He had a romantic relationship with the other person his planet, right? But then Transformers decided THEY'D kill off their good-guy leader--and it traumatized so many kids (after all, the TF cartoon audience was younger) that Hasbro told the makers of the G.I. Are you really that confused about why they changed the premise in the dub? It's because the original really didn't have any recurring characters beyond the Prince himself, any recurring locations, or really much else to sell the show on (the other show at least had a dog they could use as a selling point). Adding that bit of the Prince on his planet at the beginning of every episode suddenly made the whole show much more fantastical and easier to market, especially for kids who could only watch the show spontaneously and would never get to see the first/last episode. I'm not saying they SHOULD have done it, but the reasoning makes sense.
@thepantweaver

Just a spitball here, but, is it possible that those added bits of going to and from his planet were added because the original show had to be edited a certain way? Well kids ARE stupid. I NEVER noticed the repeat scenes, or the backgrounds, and i never cared about the bad lip matching the words. I just loved this show. And the reason the Prince needs to go back home all the time is; the Prince had to go home to keep his promise to HIS ROSE! Duh. And I NEVER noticed that the father and daughter acted flirty or anything. I WAS A KID! Granted I wasn't a kid in 2003! I was a kid in the 80's. We fell for stuff kids nowadays wouldn't.

"Does Star Trek hold up well in animation?" Yes, yes it does. It's one of flimation's best works, accurate to the point one of the episodes was actually considered cannon to Spock's backstory (Yesteryear) and had some interesting new crewmembers like Mress and Atax. So yes, it holds up

Didn't they also make the flower a horrible...person I guess works in this case...by making her rude and demanding attention? I also noticed the name Julie Dees (aka Julie McWhirter), the voice actress who I believe was married to weekend radio host Rick Dees at the time. Oh, and advanced warning: As a defender of Filmation and seeing how many animation reviewers who didn't grow up with them treat their work I'm going to be very curious how you approach this. And as a Christian I'm curious about one particularly infamous episode that didn't belong on a 1970s Saturday morning show...at least not with the message as interpreted.

I used to watch a lot of Filmation in my youth. People tend to say their strengths were in their stories.
@ShadowWingTronix
@ShadowWingTronix 4 года назад
Exactly. What they might have lacked in animation (using as much stock footage and reused elements as they could get away with) their stories were great. They didn't talk down to kids but treated them as intelligent, knowing what they could handle and couldn't in their action shows, and had good messages while leading the way in the treatment of women and characters of color, something we supposedly still lack today.

There are various shows that are underrated if they're mentioned at all (Mission America is a good example), although I can't think of one animation company or distributor alone who got it perfect, depending on your tastes and preferences.Come to think of it, there are anime studios that also can produce some clunkers among their hits or hits among their clunkers. We just usually get the better stuff now.
