I find it funny how he calls the little girl out on not having a name like it's a mark against her, when literally no one else in the movie has an actual name either xD
@anessone

Yeah neither do the people in the little prince book as well haha
@shamanite

The strongest point of the movie is how it tells children about death. It's not a subject you see in a lot of kid's movies. And it's done beautifully. At the beginning you think that the main theme is gonna be growing up, but death becomes the main theme as the story progress. I thought the third part was a little weird (it felt... fanfic-y) but the climax was just beautiful.
@elsie8757
@elsie8757 8 лет назад
Well if you interpret the third act as how the girl imagined the ending of the Little Prince story, it kinda _is_ a fanfic of sorts :P
@shamanite
@shamanite 8 лет назад
Elsie Not Giving You My Last Name Exactly! That what I was thinking while watching for the first time! That's why I prefer the first and second part of the movie.
@anessone
@anessone 8 лет назад
But the whole point of the movie is how hard the original story impacts her and how she interprets it. She may be generic in the first act but she gets quite a bit of development later on thanks to how the ending played out
@shamanite
@shamanite 8 лет назад
anessone I agree, the development of the main character is satisfying, it's making the Little Prince a lost grown-up and making the Businessman the villain that I found a little weak.

+shamanite (no spoilors) you should watch kubo and the two strings if you haven't already, it handles death in a good way also and it has amazing visuals. I just really enjoyed it, also I like laika and stop motion in general so that helped

Surprised this wasn't mentioned, but a lot of the mom's behavior does make sense when you look into the context. It has been made pretty clear that the girl's father is either left the family or is working away from them. It hasn't been made clear which, but I am betting on the former. With this is mind, a lot of the story involving the mother and daughter does have a new perspective for us to observe. In fact, there might be new insight behind what happens in the third act if you consider what sort of relationship the little girl and her missing father must of had. A lot of it being mostly a mix of speculation and interpretation on my part.

Well, to be fair, this wouldn't be the first time Mat missed a really important detail regarding a certain plot point. (You know, like how he assumed the grandmother in Arrietty had no reason to try and capture the little people even though it was very clearly stated why she did it)
@slashermaster28
@slashermaster28 8 лет назад
CamsEyeView Yeah, and then he proceeds to ignore the comments pointing this stuff out when he makes the top 5 best and worst list and only focuses on a brief run-down on what he said in the review, not once acknowledging that he made a mistake.
@elsie8757
@elsie8757 8 лет назад
Yeah and he says "in the real world she would be considered a psycho" but it's obviously NOT the "real world", it's a caricature meant to display the hyper-obsession grown-ups have with business and schedules and everything being in order, to symbolically contrast it with the childlike free-spirited worldview that the Little Prince represents. Thus creating the moral of the movie: Don't run from adulthood, but also don't let go of the wonder and creativity you had as a child.

As someone who has never heard of the book and had no preconception of the film and was just looking for something fun to watch on netflix, this film blew me away. I agree, the characters were generic, but the voice cast pushed them over the top to make them so special and made me care for and became so invested in all the characters. I don't thin the message was forced, I feel like it captured childhood whimsi without going overboard. I honestly sobbed throughout the entire movie. It gave me so many emotions, and the relationship between the girl and the old man was so believable and reminded me of being a child hanging out with my grandparents, so it really hit close to home. I thought this film was excellent. My only nitpick was that it got a little too silly and over the top during the climax. The drastic change in tone was definitely distracting. But other than that, there was a simplicity and intelligence to this movie that you don't see in children's films these days. It felt like it was treated the audience, young and old, with dignity but also wanted you to feel that childlike wander that it's so easy to forget. This film was great, and I admire your opinion on the review...but i wonder what it would be like if you didn't have a connection with the book? But still, really good review...I just loved it a whole lot more, but that's just me!

I agree entirely. I loved this movie and I cried during it too. I agree with with everything but I will offer one thing about the third act, what if she was dreaming? Hear me out ok?! I know the whole, it was all a dream is overused and I agree, but if you re-watch the movie then you could see that the props and characters that are use at the end are used throughout the movie. My theory is that she went out the window and when the pipe fell she hit her head and dreamed about flying, that is the only way I could see it working.

Ah nostalgic memories just overflow me with this beautiful movie. (yes sorry I am late.)

I think every character in this film is worth remembering, every single one of them represents something in the real world, and it’s a movie that ACTUALLY makes you think, unlike many action movies today that has no real point, this movie has the power to teach young kids about relationships, the value in life, and death, I think it’s a beautiful work of art and I appreciate the animators attention to detail

I disagree, I found the whole point of the little girl's story a reflection of how The Little Prince can affect our own lives and I think it is a tribute to how much impact the novel made on the world. Yeah, the character's are kinda generic but that creates the contrast between that and the magic and originality of The Little Prince and then in the 3rd act it all melds together into mix of stereotypes and magic. As for the 3rd act not being possible if you consider the end of the book.. SPOILER ALERT!!!! The whole point of the end of the book was that IF the Little Prince is in fact dead (we never really know) he lives on in our minds. Hence the whole thing about hearing his laughter when we look at the stars. And that's what happens in the third act. The story of the Little Prince is lost with the old man in the girl's mind, but she goes and refinds him and returns him to his original glory, immortalising him, as the movie continues to immortalise the Little Prince by continuing his story on in a modern context. I could go on but imma going to stop now.

Bro, u better review a movie when you know for sure, not just think but know for sure if u really understood the movie for what it is. According to this review I understood that you need to be matured and open minded or a cool as a child to understand this movie, off which, unfortunately my dear, you are none. The movie tried to explain the characters such as little prince, the king, the business man and the police as the characters that are embedded in your system. The Little prince attributes a person innovation, creativity, fantasy, compassion, thoughtfulness and optimism. When we were born, we were given these qualities by keeping the little prince in charge. As we grow up, in the process we will form a network that is controlled by business man having policemen, the king and the professor working for him to adapt the surroundings which mostly end up killing our childhood (or the little prince). When the business man says the prince at the end about his 370 jobs, it emphasizes how we are actually abusing our childhood killing its traits, pushing it into a bottomless abyss for eternity until we realize what we missed in this process, probably at the old age as the aviator did. This is why he never wanted another poor soul cry like him for killing his life out of his career. He then, meets the little girl who happened to have no name because she represents every child on earth. Have you ever thought while she was busy the whole night on an adventurous trip on plane to the businessman's world in the pursuit of little prince, how could she manage to combine all the aviator's work into one book? The director left a clue for what happened in realty. It's none other than an immaculate resemblance between the vacuum cleaner tank in which she scraped and vacuumed her neon stars into and the vessel in which the business man collected all the stars in his realm. All this adventurous trip was running in the little girl's mind in the background while she was putting all the aviators work together and finds her little prince in shape once again by the end. The fox represent's an assurance and optimism while the stars represents dreams in this film. These are the friends we are loosing in the process of growing up into this commercial world. This is about the little prince as much as it is about the girl, may be a bit more about the little prince. The director took a part of the little prince's original version just to show how amazing him and his friends such as fox and the rose are. If we have to support the girl's adventure to save the little prince inside herself, first we need to know his essence, and this is why he took the help from the little prince novel. This doesn't any way tells you or hints you the movie should be the original novel version entirely. This is the reason, you need some maturity to understand and feel the grace in this movie. You better resign to your reviewer job. Reviewer is not the one that just says how the movie smelled, he should be able to say how the movie inspired. My advise for you is to try to find another job that suits you.
@jeffreybinnekamp6840
@jeffreybinnekamp6840 7 лет назад
Pranav Thoutam, dude, let him have his opinion. No need to tell him to stop reviewing altogether. A reviewer is supposed to express his feelings towards the film. This is subjective. Your deep interpretation isn't necessarily the only right one. It's just a matter of perspective. But a reviewer also has to look at aspects of a film that are more agreed upon to indicate quality. Films without a coherent plot can be considered to have less quality, for example. My point is, this is Animat's perspective. He just didn't read as deep into it when watching it. As a reviewer he did cover the more objective aspects just fine too. By the way, i don't mean to start an argument here. Just trying to relativate a bit :)

I actualy really love this movie.. More as it´s own version of the story. For the first half of the movie I thought it was okay and thought that maybe they could have added more of the original Little Prince... but after Violet takes the plane and travels to another world... I thought it was one of the best movies ever. And I just couldn´t stop watching it and being impressed. And I really love how they tried to tell the story in here. But I don´t wanna talk about it because I can´t talk about it without any spoilers. But it was one of the best movie moments from last year for me and I totaly absolutely loved it.

It has been years since I cried during an animated movie. This one pulled me hard. The one scene that got to me is when her "dad" sends her the same crappy gift every year. It shows how little effort he has to his own flesh and blood. In my head cannon; when she is old enough she writes him stating how dead he is to her and how she is going to remove his last name from her own.

I've been a longtime fan of the original book and have seen both a play and a ton of animations. I absolutely loved the idea of the frame story. You cannot ever convert the book directly into a movie. Trust me. It worked as a play, sorta, and I can't vouch for the comic book yet. But on film? No. Never. Never ever. It's impossible to adapt it directly and a using a frame story seems like the only possible option. Also, I'm embarassed to say that I cried at least four times during this movie. I won't down-vote, though, because I'm not a pussy who can't handle others' opinions. Also, Matt? I think you missed the point of the book. You're very down-to-Earth, which is of course useful in a lot of situations. In with this book, however, it just comes off as cynicism.

I wouldn't really consider the girl a "jerk". She only fought with her mom because she wanted to have a childhood and she didn't want her mom to control her whole life. And the scene where she lashes as the aviator is just because she still a kid who doesn't fully comprehend death and she misunderstood the aviator.

All I really took from this was that he really liked the book and expected it's contents to be able to fill a feature length film by itself.

The 3D animated TV show of The Little Prince is actually really good. The animation looks great, the designs are interesting and goddammit, the Snake is a great villain. That's how you villainize a character that wasn't evil in the original. *angrily glares at Disney's Junglebook*

i thought the parts with the little girl was great. it shows how suffocating it is to be 'professional', or to 'adult'. theres hardly any room to be a child in any sense. i felt it perfectly portrays the story's theme.

1:30 So what if he isn't the star of the film? There are other films based on books where the main character of the book isn't the main character of the film.

They obviously couldn't have made the entire movie in that stop-motion style. That would have been incredibly expensive and time consuming. Making a full-length movie like that would have taken way too long for any studio to be interested. And it would have been much too expensive to do without one. It works better in small doses and contrasts with how sterile the CG looks. If the CG was lively and colorful, the stop-motion wouldn't be as special or impressive without that contrast.

Mark Osbourne is one of the most underrated animation directors out there. Been a fan of his since seeing his short film "More" (in the form of a music video) on Toonami Midnight Run. It changed the way I looked at animation. To me, this was Osbourne's best work. But i can see your point of view. I never grew up with the story, so this was my first real exposure to it. Still, it's something that I love going back to at least once a year.

We're all entitled to our beliefs, and I value the time you took to analyze this film! Even though we'd disagree on it's overall merit, it's probably because of how we both saw, and felt different things from the film. Some things are more comparable than others to certain people! And just because you didn't get the same intensity I received from the film, doesn't make you less right or more wrong. ^.^

Movie was kind of ok, stop motion and actual Little Prince parts were truly amazing. But holy shit, third act was a clusterfuck of creators going "shit, we need to fill out another 25 minutes with some action sequence". Fuck. Little Prince is not a god damn Transformers. You don't have to put a fast, big confrontation in the third act. Actually, I'd love to see only the stop motion parts as a short movie.
@anessone
@anessone 8 лет назад
I think you may be missing the whole point of that since the whole third act just gives her a looot of character development. Everything that impacted her from the prince's story to her life is mixed in and it makes sense how over the top it is due to her age and trying to figure things out. For a "padding" of 25 minutes its really well done padding.

I actually don't mind the idea of the frame story, it's just that it takes too much room up in the movie. It should have stayed the frame work for putting the Little Prince into a new context, not the main event. And then the third act came and really ruined the movie for me. Which is too bad, because beforehand I was all "that is great!!!" especially when they told the parts which are actually from the book.
@anessone
@anessone 8 лет назад
But the whole point of the third act is that she uses the power of the prince's story to figure stuff out and put in her own ending just like anyone who sees an open ending could do. She's not supposed to be a reliable narrator

If only they made a shortfilm with the animation they used for the book segments. The part with the girl just oversimplifies the meaning of the original story in a cliche way that I would expect from a B grade Peter Pan adaptation.

All of these movie reviews of The Little Prince are really biased towards it. I've read the original story and I'm not upset with Paramount's adaptation of it. The movie made me cry at least 5 times. 3 times the first time I watched it, 2 times the second. I honestly don't see what's wrong, there's nothing wrong about the movie at all!

Idk about you but I think this movie is A M A Z I N G! I've just finished it and thought it was pretty good. I never have gotten the message to be shoving down my throat cause I was so into the character designs and animation. It looks like a pretty film to me and I love how it's all slow-motion when they show the original story. It's fine if you have a different opinion on it. We all have that. I'm just stating about on why I love the movie ^^;

It is free on Netflix too you don't have to rent it fun fact it was made for a movie wide release along with commercials and even some posters that theaters hung up to give the movie more hype but for some reason it was shut down and Netflix bought it which was a shame because I think it would've down fairly well in the box office especially with animation buffs like me or even to little kids
