All immediately after graduating with honors from Yale... Yeah dudes pretty committed and impressive in that regard for sure. He’s also far from a racist at least publicly speaking- nobody but he knows if he is or not but obviously facts definitely point to him not being whatsoever and good luck proving he’s racist as it’s impossible to do without fabricating or falsifying facts and reality
Yea my guy had to be using steroids for American History X. Those traps are way too big for even a dull year of insane training. That takes roids or multiple years. You can get a six pack or big arm muscles but those neck traps are generally a good way to tell if a guy is natural or not. Muscle tissue is really hard to build there, especially for guys that weight 150lbs. Id think a heavier guy who naturally gains weight easier could maybe do it in a year but not ed. Imo.
@@lachlanmadden740 The original ending had Derek looking himself in the mirror shaving his head, returning to his old ways. Norton strongly disagreed and believed the ending should be as you see in the film. personally i think Norton was right, and I'm glad he went to the studio and fought for what he thought the end should be. I think the original ending would have totally destroyed the film
American History X is one of those movies where it's hard for you to want to watch it a second time, and not because it's bad. It just has to be one of the most tragic movies I've ever seen.
I have watched this movie a thousand times. I am facsinated at the human condition, and how what happens to us in life, no matter how big or little, can change us forever. We all have the potential for evil, as well as our own justifications for it.
@@keithmuset6510 As someone who has lived that life (except for buttfucking in shower) I can tell you it takes very little to seed the hate in a young heart full of pain and it takes a lot of willpower and time to later fix it, but fortunately it can be done! This film was part of my healing and returning to the right path. People don't even realize how little is needed for someone to become a monster
Derek was such a painful character to watch go through such an immense transition. American History X is not just a masterpiece of cinema, it’s an important and vital dialogue that needed to be spoken. Brutal movie. A hard watch. A necessary story.
And..because of the extreme PC change over the last 2/3 years (since 2020)- we probably won’t see movies like this ever again. It’s a shame. Society has become *very* sensitive over subjects like this.
@@zeej80 yeahp. Just recently they removed shotcaller from netflix, a movie about a DUI driver who had to become skinhead to survive prison, then triumphs to topple the aryan gang and protect his family. They just can't hold that type of movie on their platform in this day and age. despite having had shotcaller on their platform basically since it came out.
That’s very insightful. True he’s like rubber he’s an average and dull (but not in a bad way) that can just shift into characters. I don’t know if I’m describing it how you say but I see what your saying.
😐 Is someone going to tell him? Nobody? Fine...I'll do it. Two things, High Speed. 1. All Actors are suppose to be Chameleons. Research acting methods. 2. " You're not watching a celebrity, you're watching the character. " This (is fucking cringey) isn't at the fault of the actor, but the lack of being able to separate the actor from his characters (your fault).
@@curtebo He fought with the director of American History X to change the storyline to what it is now. Is hollywood gonna give awards to guy like that? I dont think so.
Ever since Joe had Mel Gibson on that one time his guests on his show have become next lvl. Joe getting Mike Tyson on was another HUGE moment for the Podcast. I guess word spread that having a 2 or 3 hour non scripted podcast session with Joe was actually a really good thing and he makes it easy... The fans get to see a more "real and unfiltered" side of some of the most amazing icon/actors and minds of our time.
His entire performance is excellent but I think the standout moment is when he's giving his speech just before they trash that store. You can really see his anger and frustration.
"You see this?! It means NOT WELCOME! How could you bring him to my fathers table? How could you go from Dad to THAT?! Arent you ashamed??" "Im ashamed that you came out of my body"
@@samdiego1989 the problem is that what happens after the speech isn't what someone who gives a speech like that would do. It's blatant social engineering.
Derick say always end with a Quote...So I picked someone I think you guys would like...“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
She's defiantly in my Top 10 of Latina actors! The scene from Dust Till Dawn!! If you have never seen it which I'm sure most people have,if not sue so before you pass away!
How humble of him to not mention he also edited the movie himself. According to how I heard it, he sat in on the editing sessions with the director and disagreed with many of the decisions they were making throughout the process. So he went back in by himself and edited his own version which was longer and darker, and that's the version the studio went with.
Didn't know that either. Then, I'd have to assume that he had a hand in how raw the dinner flashback scene was (Derek losing it and all the dialogue leading up to that point). Maybe it just feels like it dragged on because of how genuinely uncomfortable it makes me feel, but it definitely seems like a prime candidate for Hollywood butchering. Too long, hammering the point in too hard, etc. w/e. It wasn't, or rather, it was supposed to be, and I'm glad they didn't cut into it.
I read something different. I read that the director had such a falling out with Norton-Furlong and the producers that he didn't even want his name attached to the project. He also stated that he would never work with Norton again and that Norton continuesly tied up production due to all the changes they wanted to apply. This information is also on IMDB. I read that somewhere else first. I think Norton and Furlong are superior talents so it seems hard to believe but you never know.
Yeah I was wondering about the question. He asks him if it's difficult to keep going after an iconic role, but he has had multiple iconic roles. So that makes it much easier to keep going actually.
NOW SAY GOODNIGHT That's why it's such a good movie. You sympathize with a violent racist murderer. You understand how he got where he is. He wants to change but he cant move on from the past because, either he cant accept what he's done, or because he's being dragged back to a worse version of himself by people he cared about. A very intelligent character study about the affects of institutional racism and the roots of it
@@robertlaube574 Chill bro, don't get your panties in a twist. But it's a fictional story. I don't think white guys are getting away with 2 years in jail for triple homicide, including a curb stomp lol.
Said that'll never happen because Tarantino's done after his next movie and he is already said he's trying to make a tarantino version. R rated. So unless ed and pit are going to play spock and kirk. Forget it
@@ron.hertzberg Quentin never said he was "done", he said he was done writing and/or directing. He still loves movies, he just wants to stay a little further back, like a producer. wording matters.
@@FoxUnitNell Think his star trek idea has bern shelved for now. Heard talks of him doing a horror movie instead for his 10th. Technically OUATIH was his 10th but he considers killbill to be all one movie.
David Oakes Oh, ANOTHER random on the internet who knows EXACTLY how someone should look while offering insults too. What good do your bring to the world by being such a tool?
I didn't think Jamie did the uploading of clips here. I thought there was someone else chopping up the podcast and uploading them as the podcast is still going
American History X is one of the greatest films ever made. Edward Norton deserved an Oscar for it. I saw it as a teenager and just had my teenage son watch it. He loved it too.
One of the most accurately depicted, beautifully written and filmed pieces of socio political commentary ever created. Everyone should have to watch this movie atleast once but sadly nowadays this would get silenced by people who take it at face value because they are unwilling to see how impactfully brilliant and deep it is
Inspired by God.. truth. The change and realization it created to bring his people back to the right path… lots of movies and songs are inspired by God. Poetry books art.. how soothing is nature, a walk in the woods. A flower in the desert, the sound of the wind etc.
Sadly it was silenced then. That is Hollywood for you. Same thing with American Sniper. And oddly enough the same thing with Straight outta Compton. Hollywood is hypocritical
I was watching Skin the other night and both me and my wife discussed American History X while watching this new movie Skin. We came to the conclusion that American History X was so good that if you watch any other movie of that genre, it just doesn't stand up and you end up saying "remember how good American history X was?"
That got so much fucking hate and I never understood why.... It is 1 of those movies that critics hates, and I watched multiple times.... It taught me not to listen to critics
AHX was a masterpiece of a movie. Such hard hitting and great acted by everyone. I always said Edward Furlong should have been the next DiCapiro after that performance
He's a method actor, he really immersed himself into his character in American History X to the point he received some backlash, I'm sure he needed some down time to climb back out of that character. He was amazing.
It’s crazy to see these amazing actors age. To realize kids today won’t ever realize their massive effect on the film industry they made and how amazing of actors they use to be
Yeah fr. It seems only movies that seem to get play are action superhero movies where the emphasis is not really on the characters and acting etc so we don't really see too much of these stories and their actors making waves
It's a powerful tribute to his ability that before "American History X" I couldn't possibly have imagined him in that role, and then after seeing him in it... I can't possibly imagine anyone else doing so well with it.
Agreed. I think the same thing was being said about Heath Ledger as the Joker. Before that role, he was seen as this sensitive, good-looking, charming boy and he had roles to match that image. Nobody expected him to do well as a scary, psychotic, evil, mastermind. Then he just delivered probably one of the best villain roles of all time.
@@neemnoa303perhaps there is something to be said about how society depicts psychopaths and their antagonistic traits versus the innate darkness in the ones we view as harmless.
American History X is one of those films that stays with you for a few days after you watch it. That twinkle in his eye as he's getting cuffed on his knees in the street is spine chilling.
This guy taught must of us what curb stomping is. It’s one thing to hear it described in history books, but the filming of it and “doing it” on screen forever imprinted it in our brain circuits.
Brilliant in this movie. Somehow makes the character charismatic in his brutality then so vulnerable when he breaks... a character arc that has to be seen to be believed.
The movie was based off of a book loosely called Autobiography of a recovering skinhead. He’s my really good friend Frank Meeink. If you are a fan of the movie try giving the book a read. Hollywood embellished a lot compared to the book, like getting raped in prison, but Frank was Derek Vineyard in real life. Frank has helped me through a lot of my own struggles growing up in a gang in Chicago and moving past it. Hatred claims many victims along the way but you never realize it until it’s too late most of the time. Great movie and acting on Norton’s part as well.
Love Joe's Podcast and love y'alls channel For making his Podcast more accessible but I do have a suggestion. What about putting time stamps in your descriptions in case anybody wants to see a continuation of your clip on his main video. Like as in this clip begins at 36:00 and ends at 41:08. Again just a suggestion but that would actually make things a lot easier I think for everyone involved and makes it much more attainable for those intrested in certain parts of his Podcast but don't have time to sit through the full 3 hours.
@Top Shelf Fandom these uploads don’t give time-stamps from when they occur in the full episode. Jamie could easily be marking down the times of each topic as the conversation flows
Timestamps are great if you're really in a hurry. It's also quite a bit of work to do in the span of 3 hours. But come on. It's Ed Norton. You can't listen to the whole thing? Also here's an idea. Listen, pause it, and come back later! I know....I know. I'm a genius.
One of the most incredible acting performances of all time. It's up there with de Niro in the deer hunter or James Gandolfini as Tony soprano. It's so incredible
I rewatched the movie again, Hes simply amazing. Man the detail and the rant he did on the dinner table before he shoved the roast beef into his sisters mouth, speaks so many facts in 2020 america. Insane
@Vincent Verona That was the point. Most racism, when you break it down, is poorly thought out and simply comes from a place of bias and ignorance. The part of the performance isn't the words he's saying, it's the conviction with which he's saying them.
Both Rounders and American History X released in the same year, and you get to see a total different Edward Norton in both; that's what I call superb acting. I have respect for type casted actors, but Norton is the classical definition of acting.
Rounders! He played Worm so awesome! I struggled with loving him and then hating him when he messed up their situation. Such a great range of feelings. Love Edward Norton!
One of the best performances in film I’ve seen is him in American History X! You can look at it and honestly not think it’s the same person talking hear and in the movie. That movie is so underrated in so many ways! The acting in the movie was great but the points made in that film and how they’ve played out over time shouldn’t be overlooked.
This guy is an amazing entertainer. His performances are so great and memorable that I have to watch him every day.... And Edward Norton is great too...
I knew Norton as the character in American History X and Fight Club, which I think were two films that had a lot of fanfare especially from young guys around my age at the time. And the People vs. Larry Flynt was a great movie, too. Ed Norton has a unique and great list of roles that he has played.
25th Hours is one of my favorite movies ever. Even for Norton fans it flies under the radar. He has one of the most powerful monologues of all time in that film-in the bathroom mirror. Incredible film.
As much as American History X angered me to the point I couldn't finish it every time I'd say I was going to watch the whole this time, once I finally sat through the entire movie, it was the most moving story I'd ever watched and honestly Edward Norton was extremely ballsy to do it because he had no way of telling if he'd have a future as an actor after it. He really put everything he had into his character
@@Shiggystardust because there's so much much stigma against basically anything that's not the narrative today, but even back when there actually was white supremacists in the 90s a movie like this was seen as "controversial" make no mistake, I never said he SHOULD lose his career at all whatever. Just nice to see an actor have the balls to go there in his art to send a positive message.
