Being Chinese-made might explain how it suffered such extensive damage. We had a Conn (made in USA) trombone get run over by a trailer that was then completely repaired.

Yes, best reason for getting a good American or British or European horn rather than a cheap Asian one made solely for quantity. Better metal is more easily prepared. Though a good brass repairman can fix this - and it seems one has.

I have only ever dropped one of my trombones. I was practicing for a marching band and dropped it on solid concrete. The slide was bent to a 45 degree angle, the bell was just mangled and the support rod for the bell was snapped. Luckily it was only a £600 tenor trombone. I know have a £5000 Bach bass trombone. If I ever dropped that, I would be screwed

What kind of tools do you have? I would imagine that with a good assortment of hand tools and a blowtorch and solder that this could be your next project. It looks already pretty much screwed so you don't have to worry about making it worse. One of my best (and most frustrating) experiences I had was when I took a bottom rung student model bari sax (ready for the trash) and while not completing a full restoration worked on it until it came to the point where it could play all the notes and was relatively leak free. At this point all you can do is improve it.

For people asking how fragile these instruments are, they are very. The slightest dent on the inner slides would put you either out of time forever until fixed or just make you unable to play. Now just a normal Tenor Trombone is pretty light so dropping it from the height he did wouldn't be as bad, but a bass trombone is pretty heavy. And dropping one of those one a tile floor. Ouch.

My tenor trombone, an 85-100 year old H. B. Jay Chicago Columbia tenor, has a break between the slide brace and mouthpiece receiver.(A little similar to the break on your contrabass slide receiver part)However, it is not the solder that has came loose, the brass has torn in two. @melancholyneon
@melancholyneon 7 лет назад
You do realize that this is essentially a double sized bass trombone, that essentially uses a tuba mouthpiece.
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 7 лет назад
To start with, the slide is a quad-bore arrangement, meaning each of the four slide tubes are different diametres. To fix them properly you would want four different sized mandrels, or four different sized dent removal tools. You could make do with others, but given the large bore of the instrument (tuba sized) finding appropriate tools is a lot more difficult.
@Grayham4
@Grayham4 7 лет назад
+Trent Hamilton how much would it cost to fix my trombone slide on my tenor? (it's a Holton special from the twenties, I don't know if that matters). The slide meets a lot of resistance as it is pulled out and I assume the cause is that the pair of tubes that it slides on (for lack of a better description) are splayed outwards slightly. Also, the solder joint the connects the bell section to the tube that joins the bell and slide together has become undone (I assume due to tension).

@kmabru
@kmabru 5 лет назад
I had commented on the other video and I'll stand by what I said there. It didn't look THAT bad (though I didn't know about the main slide at that point). Just about anything is repairable. The question though is whether or not it's worth fixing. The damage to the bell isn't bad (I've seen worse). The support damage would be an easy fix. Same with the tubing sections that got pulled out. The rotary valve might be troublesome and require replacement, depending on what was wrong with it. The real problem is the main slide. Getting the alignment right on a standard slide can be a pain. Doing it with the double slide setup would be a nightmare. Wonder if they checked each one individually. If they did and each segment worked, you just have to get the alignment back. Given that it was a cheap Chinese model, it probably wasn't worth fixing.

Mors Mutual Insurance Accidents happen though, and if you own something worth a few thousand dollars or more, you'd have it itemised (listed separately for an additional fee on your contents insurance) to cover you for all forms of oopsies and oh-shits. At least that's how I would assume it to be... Blatantly destroying it yourself, and accidentally letting go are two different scenarios, and a good insurance company should have you covered for the latter.
