No filmmaker captures the grandeur and energy of New York like Martin Scorsese. With this sumptuous romance, he meticulously adapted the work of another great New York artist, Edith Wharton, bringing to life her tragic novel of the cloistered world of Gilded Age Manhattan.
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE is available on Criterion Blu-ray/DVD on 13 March 2018.

He also got on record saying that he counts this movie as The Most Violent One he did. At least in Goodfellas when Joe Peschi threatens to cap someone for “calling him a clown”, it was done upfront. The Gilded Age NYC high society though? Waste you and bury you, just with innuendos!

I feel the same way with his upcoming release. Sensational to hear members of the Osage appreciating Scorsese for his endeavours at filming their past with hubris and respect. But yes, it must have been incredibly startling to watch this film following his previous Goodfellas.

An absolutely elegant, beautiful movie. Every part of this makes it worth seeing and definitely worth owning. The cast did a superb job in carrying the dramatic plot. The character development was beautiful, the music was breath-taking, the style really captured its timeframe, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. It perfectly captures the feelings of love, regret, and hopelessness. This is a truly unforgettable movie.

Oh my so much pain.. I kept being reminded that I'm basically "Ellen", the different one In some countries, there are societies that still live this way. In my case, my own choices would have lasting consequences on my family, status, image (everything implied in the movie..), I can't fully be selfish and do what I believe is best for me and not think about the results I had to make the hardest decision and let the love of my life go, so he could find love and happiness without the conditions my society was imposing (since he came from a different culture) As a result, my family kept its 'honor' and my sisters have their futures and acceptance in society , but I'm forever heartbroken, mourning a life that could have been.. 💔

Such a great movie in every other way than giving 'proper-respectful' credit where credit is due. Louisa van der Luyden was played by one of the greatest top rated top billed actresses ever, on screen and stage, Alexis Smith. Yet, I was appalled to find her name lost somewhere down in the middle of the third column of feature actors. (!?) The proper accrediting given to someone of Ms Smith's stature should of been at the end of crediting all else read And or Also starring Alexis Smith. Or even Featuring. I cant believe Scorsese would roll that way.

Edith Wharton wrote the book after she had survived WW 1 in Europe. The film is set at the time of her youth; reflecting the society that she lived within . By 1900 that type of society was beginng to be replaced After WW1 European and American culture and society would never return to such a stable (albeit, some would say "stagnant") state of tight-knit communities. Lilly rose Kinda agree? Archer should have realized earlier that May would make him miserable since their personalities did not match. Especially since May gave him a choice partway through to break the engagement. As for May... I confess I don’t really like her character either. She’s shallow and wanted to force Archer into her mold of an ideal society man which made him absolutely miserable. Perhaps Ellen is the most “blameless” in a sense. She’s following her instincts only and she at least had the foresight to go away from Archer eventually. Even if May did not frighten her away with the pregnancy, she was only willing to consummate the affair once then flee so as to give her cousin a proper marriage.

I bought the film for $5 on Google Play and it's a decent film. I would have been upset if I had paid $1 more though... Some movies aren't worth what you pay for so this was acceptable.

It's a crashing bore from start to finish. Scorsese has no feel or understanding for the period and only he could take two talented actors like Day Lewis and Pfeiffer and turn them into a pair of stiffs.
