Hmm, this is kind of embarrassing - chatting about one’s vagina on RU-vid. We talk about our bad backs, our knee replacements, our thinning hair, but rarely do we discuss our vaginas with our friends and family, let alone with strangers on a public forum like this.
So WHY am I doing this? Simple - to help my post-menopausal sisters who may be going through pain during sex, caused by “Recurrent Fissuring of the Posterior Fourchette” I, for one, had never heard of this condition until recently.
I'm not giving medical advice in this video, I'm simply telling my story in the hope that we can talk more openly about issues that affect many post-menopausal women.
Some will take a pass on watching this - I get it, maybe it’s not what you subscribed for; but if this video helps just a couple of women, then it’s worth it to me.

Update - Thank you all so much for your kind comments and well wishes! The surgery seemed to go smoothly, my follow-up visit is on January 26th, so I will give a more detailed update after that examination. Gosh, I have received so many smart, informative, comments here! Please read them, because there are so many ways to treat post menopausal/aging vagina issues, and as I said in the video - I am not an expert, I am just telling my story.

OMG, I literally just saw my Gyno yesterday about this very thing. She also confirmed that the same area you were talking about is very sensitive. We talked about how to deal with it and put a plan in place. Thank you for talking about this very sensitive topic. I am 69, in Sicily. After more years without sex than I can remember, I started a relationship 2 years ago. Naively, I expected all to be well; but intercourse was painful and I had light bleeding. A female gynaecologist was very sympathetic and prescribed prasterone pessaries, initially daily and twice weekly long term. In addition, I have paid for occasional internal treatments with radio frequency and electromagnetic impulse. No needles, just a sensation of heat. I am happy to report good results

I'm sorry that this was embarrassing for you Kerry Lou, because it shouldn't be, for you or any of us. We didn't design the way things fail "down south" once the estrogen leaves us, after all. All we can do is try to deal with it the best we can, and sharing stories and experiences is very helpful. I hope being open and honest like this among ourselves will reduce some of the embarrassment/shame that can accompany the changes in our aging bodies. I'm sorry you are experiencing this pain, and I wish you a rapid recovery from not only the surgical procedure but also the recurrent fissuring that necessitated it.

Great video! I’m 67 and my pain started when I was 50. I’d had a yeast infection (first time for me) and after that sex e came painful. It felt like I had torn inside. I went to see a gynecologist and (he) said everything looked fine in there but offered no solution. I’m not a person who visits the dr more than I have to so I took his word for it and hoped it would go away, it didn’t, it got worse. I didn’t mention it to my husband, not sure why because he’s the sweetest most understanding person ever🙄 At 66 I finally confessed, asked my new GP for help and “he” said he knew the perfect person. She’s a Nurse Practitioner who specializes in vaginas! She’s my age or more and a hoot! She started me with a topical estrogen cream. I used it for several months with a slight improvement but it still hurt. I went back and we added estradiol tablet that is inserted biweekly with a small plunger. Just pops the tablet up there. I’ve had definite improvement with this. My problem is the thin wall of the vagina.. no tearing. I’ve always used a good lube( this is extremely important) the brand we use is called, (Pjur original) It’s available on Amazon. Made in Germany. Good luck ladies and good luck with your surgery!

Ugh! I have been dealing with vaginal pain since 2008. It started out as a possible yeast infection and I used Monistat cream and the irritation never went away. Like you, I did tons of research and a few years later began menopause. Long story short, I had some tissue removed, too, but still had pain, especially sitting. Yes, sex is a little painful, but we spend more time sitting! I can’t ride a bike anymore. I saw an older female doctor who was also very sympathetic (she did my surgery) and has never stopped trying to help. It has been slowly improving but some days- especially stressful ones- it’s just awful and I envy women with “normal” non painful vaginas! Good luck to you Kerry Lou and hope you fully recover.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's imperative to be able to speak openly about true health concerns like this as we age. It sounds like the surgery is a fissurectomy. It happens on other body parts, too, and at any age. People with gastrointestinal issues can have this happen to their rectums when the tissue is highly irritated for too long, fissures can develop. As a retired surgical nurse, so I've seen a thing or two. I'm glad you found an excellent Dr. That's the hardest part of the battle these days. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I’m so glad you were brave enough to talk about this problem on the internet. I have the same problem. I thought it was from an episiotomy from child birth. I have hurt in the same spot for years. Now I need to find a new OBGYN. I had a complete hysterectomy forty years ago. So I haven’t been to a gynecologist for that long. I have just dealt with the pain. Now that I know I don’t have to I will be asking my doctor for a referral. I’m so glad you did this video really. You never know who you can help with telling your story.

I feel this should be it's own specialized field that after childbirth a specialist comes in and does a really perfect job! I became fully menopausal at 35 years of age. I am now 68 years old. I have been on Vagifem for many years because of dryness associated with lack of estrogen. So this is a very important topic. No one should be ashamed to talk about it. Sexual health is extremely important physically and emotionally. So take care of your vagina.

Thank you Kerry Lou for broaching this subject. You are right about society making feminine health issues embarrassing but they shouldn't be. The first 2 minutes of your video was like you were reading the dialog from my own brain. I've been experiencing the same thing and got the same unhelpful advice. My (now former) Dr. put his hand on my arm and told me, "sometimes you just have to take one for the team". His exact words. My VA condition was debilitating and made me feel like I was sitting on broken glass. After several years of researching I found a topical cream that contains DHEA to replace what is lost during and after menopause. It has helped tremendously! 💖 Good luck with your surgery and here's hoping you are on the mend soon!

Now I am in menopause I have experienced pain too. I need to find a good gyno...my other one was dismissive( so shocking when when docs do not have empathy for their sisters!) Thank you for sharing your experience. I have had this issue with skin splitting on both sides of the folds of skin and I have gone to (male) gynecologists who said to use lubricant. It was only after I spoke to my GP and she recommended hormonal estradiol cream and later a suppository that I got some relief. Yes, sadly as we age the skin does get thinner in this part of our bodies. It can make relations painful and put one off from their love life. I appreciate you doing this video and your beauty videos. They are very informative and relevant. I am 62 going on 63. Much appreciated.

The doctor told her, if she didn't have so many sexual partners she wouldn't have this condition. Wait? What!!! Mom would never tell me the doctor's name. She just never went back. I am 64 my husband is 71 and we haven’t had intercouse in 8 years. We tried every lubricant but it didn’t help, especially using too much was too much for him. Anyway, we snuggle, cuddle, hold hands, kiss and our pleasure is using a vibrator. We are best friends and have had talks about this but he would now have to take medication to help him perform. So we are good! I do rub organic coconut oil on the v after a shower. That really helps with the feeling of a dry and uncomfortable V. Good luck to you, Kerry!

Hello Kerry Lou, glad to meet you and thank you so much for your sharing! My wife died 22 years ago coming September. This is exactly what we went through, it was horrible in a way that I was healthy and active but she was sick and disengage from it. She died at 57 but looks very old. I’m 80 now but still active such as 9 to 12 hours tracking in my tropical forest! Our private doctor doesn’t know what was going on in her life, wishing you all the best in your journey! Great information. I’ve been a widow for 12 years. I was 52 when my husband passed away. I have had a couple of relationships since then. The last one ended five years ago, so sadly I haven’t been intimate with a man for five years. I also had uterine cancer six years ago and had a radical hysterectomy. Everything was removed, including my cervix. I hope I will have an opportunity to experience intimacy with a man again someday. I hope the surgery was a success!

Thank you for addressing this, I’m seeing my Dr next week to get my BIOTE pellets will talk to him and see what he has to say, I also have a female gynecologist who I see for my wellness checkups and I see her in a few months and will talk to her too. Although I do not have the same problem, I have Lichen Sclerosis and finding someone to diagnose and treat it was a year-long journey. Thank goodness I, and you, found the right doctor. Thank you for sharing frankly. We really need to talk about these problems. I do not suffer fissures - thank Heaven! But I still have found direct hormonal treatment helpful for dryness and discomfort. Your advice is spot-on: talk to you doctor. And if that doctor doesn't talk, find another like Kerry-Lou did. I have same issue, started perimenopause in my 40;s burning pain itchness " it was like paper cuts" I tried many hormone creams peasary s" nothing worked' now in my early 50,s still the same problem! Your beautiful face actually made me watch! However, I am going through these symptoms too. I'm 53 and had a total hysterectomy in 2016. I was given oral hormones and faithfully took them for almost 6 years. I moved and signed on with a new GYN and she stopped them and started a vaginal insert hormone. Those kept giving me yeast infections and made my vagina raw like. I'm going back to the GYN on Thursday. I cannot stand the pain of penetration or anything entering my vagina. I have pain in that area almost always. I cannot remember the last time I didn't have pain. Thank you! I'm crying out with hope.

Thank you for this! Thinking I was alone because I have never heard of anyone else having exactly what I am experiencing. It isn't something you talk to girlfriends about, my mom who lived with us passed a few years ago, all my aunts died before age 50, so I had no one to ask. I hope it was a huge success for you! I am almost 57, when I was 53 (post menuposal since 48) I was having a burning sensation in that same spot when with my husband who is 10 years younger. My Dr. who is 60+ said tissue was thinning and the tear was where I had an episiotomy 30 years before, she gave me cream. I didn't get much relief. Only had relations 2 x that year, then covid happened and I was referred to a specialist but via phone. The Dr. was young but seemed informative, she said to use lots of organic coconut oil librily since it did not have any chemicals like lubricants do. We tried but was just to painful for me. Two more years later I am still suffering, very lucky though to have a saint of a husband, who has never gotten upset with me about this, we recently celebrated our 10th anniversary! I now will take your video to my Dr. and go from there... you have given me hope! Thank you.

I appreciate you sharing about painful intercourse. I had a hysterectomy for endometrial cancer at age 58. This surgery removes uterus, fallopian tubes and the cervix. I am now 70. I have progressively more painful intercourse with each passing year. Despite estrogen vaginally I have the same tearing and pain . I am at the point that intercourse creates severe anxiety about the anticipation of pain. I hope this surgery will help resolve the pain for you. Please let us know if this resolved your symptoms.

I just wanted to add one thing…I had the same thing and was diagnosed as having Lichen Scerosis. Check yourself with a mirror and if you notice your inner labia disappearing then likely LS is the cause. Often you might see a whitish dry patch is a figure of 8 around the area.

Thank you for addressing this issue. I’m 53 and am having issues with dryness during intercourse and I am susceptible to yeast infections, so have to be careful about what I use for lubrication….like you said….don’t want to stop having intercourse!! Please keep us updated on your recovery.❤
