And I said F&^K you because by the time a got the command officer we would have been dead. Trust me the damn Politicians and Officers knew what was going on but failed to tells us. Back in the 1980's, working on Hueys, Cobras & OH-58s, we used to gab about some of the "engineering" and "design constraints" of the different aircraft, the worst tasks to do and the ones we hated doing. Occasionally, when someone was using various adjectives while doing one of their "favorite" tasks, I'd say "well, they're supposed to change that design on the Z Model," or, "maybe by the time the Z Model comes out..." Well, I'm happy to see that the Cobra finally made it to the Z Model. 😊

The Bell AH-1Z Viper is a twin-engine attack helicopter, based on the AH-1W SuperCobra, designed and produced by the American aerospace manufacturer Bell Helicopter. Being one of the latest members of the prolific Bell Huey family, it is also called "Zulu Cobra", based on the military phonetic alphabet pronunciation of its variant letter.

Look, I know it looks like a great helicopter and all (don't call it a chopper. A chopper is a motorcycle) but anyone who has never worked on one of these has no idea how big of a nightmare this thing is. Don't get me wrong, I think they do an outstanding job and I loved every minute of being a part of this airwing community, but maintenance is a huge part of why these aircraft are so effective and when the maintenance takes forever to complete because the design of these beasts has made the simplest maintenance task ridiculously difficult then the overall effectiveness of the aircraft is diminished.

The Viper is a great helicopter, there's no doubt about that but I'd rather fly one of those big _h-53 buggers. One of the only very few that can do a true loop, heavy lift capabilities and all the stuff it can be fitted with/carry, it is a cut above the rest.
@mrgrinch837
@mrgrinch837 16 дней назад
Hey, that's not true. Any helicopter can do a loop..., "once".
@cliffcampbell8827
@cliffcampbell8827 15 дней назад
@@mrgrinch837 Not really. When attempting to loop in most helicopters, the rotary wing craft will get almost upside down but then it rolls to one side then it's right side up again. It doesn't matter how high above the ground or how fast the helicopter is going or what commands the pilot forces on the controls either. Most helicopters just won't loop.
@mrgrinch837
@mrgrinch837 15 дней назад
Well, number one I was kidding. Number two if you look at my photograph that's me flying a UH-1H huey in flight school over Alabama near a horrific place called Fort Rucker. I got 185 hours in the Huey and almost 870 hours in cobras. Your theory is novel except physics doesn't bear out when you're talking a semi-rigid rotor system which is what the hueys and cobras have. We have limitations on our maneuvering. If you try to do that in a semi rigid aircraft the rotor blade will likely cut off the tailbone and most likely go right through the gunner's head. We and any other helicopter with a semi rigid rotor system can't do that maneuver, ergo, the joke you can do a loop..., once. Then at that point you're dead. That was the joke. Sorry, Army pilot humor. Now when you're talking about a fully articulated rotor system such as the CH-53 and even the Apache and the British lynx, then you may be able to do maneuvers such as that, but not all helicopters have an articulated rotor head. It's extremely risky and the pilot really needs to know what he's doing.

I flew F model cobras for 9 years. Keep hearing references to sidewinder missiles. They designed them so they could say they can be fired. But in reality there's absolutely ZERO chance of an enemy aircraft getting past AWAC's and the fighter cover. You'll never--ever see an enemy airplane in the vicinity of our ground troops. The thought is ludicrous. Didn't happen in any wars thus far. As far as which is better, the apache is designed to take hits and keep flying. It's got great crash survivability. It's the only advantage over the Viper. Other than that they both have very comparable attributes. They do the same mission, extreme close air support for ground troops, but other than the survivability aspect, they're pretty much even. I tend to lean towards the cobras as they're easier to maintain via the computers than the apache. Most of the bugs have been worked out by the time the got the longbow and now the E model, so they're more reliable than in the past.

Go with the larger numbers. Plus they've got a lot of the same parts as the huey. Same parts allows you to save more storage space.

The warthog is an A-10. You may be confusing it with the AC 130

Question? The Army went with the Apache, and it kicks ass. Why not the USMC?

Marines have ran the Cobra family since the 60's the Viper is the latest Cobra, they also call the Viper the Zulu Cobra. Viper is better from Ship to Shore Missions, they don't have to train pilots to fly a completely different helicopter. The Viper is better than the Apache for the Marines needs. Marines usually fly in tandem with the Venom (modern Huey), the Viper has better range, higher top speed, has a higher rate of climb. They're fairly similar in alot of ways and it's splitting hairs to say which is better. Because they both have strengths over the other so it comes down to needs, familiarity, and preference. The Viper program came active over the last 20 years, the Apache was 70's/80's. The Viper is the most modern AH being in its 3rd major iteration, Cobra/Super Cobra/Viper(Zulu Cobra). There's been talks of the next AH replacing Both Vipers and Apaches to slim down costs of running multiple helicopters for similar mission sets. I have a feeling that will be a shit show just like the F35 program

@@YOSHI450Ralthough you do raise a few fine points, I hate to burst your bubble but the weapon systems between the Viper and Apache are almost identical with the Hellfire and the rockets. The only difference is the gun. Other than that the advantage of the Apache over the Viper is the Apache is designed to take hits and still keep flying, the Viper is not. Don't get me wrong I love the viper, I flew the Army for a little over 9 years so I'm a little leaning towards it but the bottom line is it can't take a hit.
