It is really good sound design tho. Babies crying are super disturbing as we have a natural instinct to want to protect them. The thing is luring you to it.
@@Sa-vs7xz Also they are raising the psychological terror. We panic as we hear babies crying, I feel the dread from the sounds. I'm pretty sure it's like Stuka siren, playing the sounds on loop to reduce the player's sanity. I think it's a great game design, very iconic and scary.
The list of sounds old birds make -various sounds of a crying baby -sounds of a dog screaming -Distorted radio chatter -some kind of song -heavily distorted looped chittering -“TO WAR TO GLOOORRRY” Another fact is that it’s said that these sounds are so loud that it could cause hearing damage when you’re in close proximity of them (more of a lore/trivial thing than gameplay mechanic)
i love that the earthworm is always at the top of the food chain, theres something so satisfying to me about a powerful foe getting absolutely demolished by a neutral third party
Correction for the flight phase: Old Birds specifically choose one of the 15 furthest nodes, meaning that they'll usually fly as far as possible. This is notable for a couple of reasons. For one, you can roughly guess where an Old Bird will fly ahead of time. For another, it causes an issue on Embrion where Old Birds tend to clump up around the ship--- the nodes on that map are positioned so as to make the main entrance and ship very likely to be Old Bird destinations.
Genuinely one of the most terrified I have ever been in any horror game was walking back to the ship and suddenly hearing an old bird wake up, then turning around to see hell on earth as it flies towards me. That was the fastest I have ever pulled the ship lever in my life
It's entirely possible for old birds to never activate, for example, once my friends waited for one to activate on eclipsed offense, it never did, not even as autopilot left. Old birds can also, and I wish I was joking about this, spawn on your planet via the dropship. It came down on the dropship, and stayed floating in the air after dropship left. These are the most broken things in the game(coding wise) Also, to anyone who sees this, Zeekers apparently didn't patch out spike traps spawning too close to main entrance properly, as it happened to me two days ago. It was admittedly very funny, as I didn't even have two seconds to react
Artifice is easily my favorite moon because Old Birds make it so much easier by clearing outdoor entities That plus God tier loot; gold bars and cash registers aplenty
the V50 trailer will forever be cemented in my mind "Listen for the Old birds call" that sound they make when their spotlight turns on is so memorable too I wonder what kind of message Lethal Company has considering the themes of previous games Zeekerss has made like The Upturned and It Steals. It Steals was seemingly a way to proove that in certain situations there truly is no escape and while you can delay your fate it will still get to you while The Upturned is about how life is truly random and that it is an uncontrollable force uncaring for if you did good things in your life since it can get wiped away by some surreal but absolutely hilarious accident. With Lethal Company though I cannot tell what it's message is since there are things like all the war related stuff, the bioweaponry and how even if you hate your situation there is a worse scenario that can make you reconsider (basically the entire Sigurd plotline) yet there are always diffrent aspects such as mankinds drive to go to war despite the fact it is unnecessary and our strange obsession to make monuments to our greed (the mansions that are present on Dine and Rend). tl;dr: I have no idea what Lethal Company is trying to tell but it feels tragic, have a nice day to whoever is that read this entire thing
One interpretation of Lethal Company I've heard is the idea of the food chain and there's always a bigger fish. Worms eat giants that eat employees, but all would be eaten by The Company given the chance. With the old birds, this is a new enemy that specifically counters other, previously untouchable enemies. In gameplay this includes the giant, but in lore it also extends to the coilheads.
@@YEs69th420 Indeed. You have "the company" as a giant monster that the employees feed that will uncaringly discard them if they don't do well enough, you have the increasing profit quotas with constant wages (like, scrap always sells for the same amount) as a representation of inflation, you have the job as a whole being a sweatshop... There's definitely some stuff regarding war in there, but it's not the main message.
These guys sure are something, I was playing with my friends and 2 old birds woke up outside the ship. Keep in mind we were on artifice, so like this is mega danger. We watched one of our friends get engulfed in flames as his scream cuts off in the Firey explosion. We could not find his body and we just dashed to the building, one of us all got killed by a dog trying to warn us about another old bird, said old bird wakes up, disintegrates another guy, I I got into the mansion, only to get blammed by a nutcracker, what a match..
Tiny correction, missiles can't directly hit you, as they only collide with terrain and enemies, not players. Edit: So zeekerss code is definitely very readable, because it can hit players but it checks for it in a different place which is why confusion happened. (It's completely unneeded because it could have been the same way but it isn't for some reason.)
This *feels* wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm mistaken. I swear if been hit with missiles in mid-air, and they end up flinging me further back.
@@sdfggdfg5fgdfg You didn’t need evidence to believe my stuff when alter presented it. I’m pretty sure alter’s testing stream for old birds involved him jumping through a rocket , if you want to go look.
@@sdfggdfg5fgdfgexactly. it's not like the poster got a shoutout in the video for decompiling Old Birds, putting all their information on a document and accurately explaining every detail, right?
the fact that a machine so simple can be so terrifying is why i love these things, also a detail no one has pointed out is how when they walk, their legs can bend both ways, unlike humans legs, that helps them to feel more simple and unintelligent, only following programming, no sentience, no hatred of humans, just programming,
Absolutely terrified the first time me and my friends encountered this thing on Adamance. It stayed around the ship cuz the Baboon Hawk nest right next to it, and we stayed inside listening to the loud sirens and baby cries trying to figure out what the hell to even do at that point. We ended up leaving. We had enough loot anyways.
Similar tonight. Our friend was cracked and got the generator. Then it blocked the curved trail that you have to hike up. I functioned as a distraction while they dropped the reactor and made a run for it. It quickly changed targets. We all actually lived so that was cluch. but we did loose the reactor.
It's immensely satisfying watching Old Birds just kick the daylights outta other outdoor enemies. I wish there was a grab animation specifically for the medium fauna (dogs, hawks, mimics). I also slightly wish they could be killed, but only by other large enemies overwheming them or friendly fire. Either would be extremely unlikely.
Me and my friends have deemed old birds as allies and just monster exterminators for a while, they are so easy to deal with and just make the outside so safe, every time we see a dormant old bird we just go "yup, this is gonna be an easy day" especially in adamance and titan
This might be the scariest monster to me. It’s the flight. They’re too damn big to be soaring off the ground. Hell the fact that they attack everything including giants is scary too. Just out for blood.
i love these videos, they are super helpful in allowing me to understand the game. but the best part of these videos it the half second clips of mimics dancing, i will always laugh at them. keep up the great work!!
I remember one time I was forced to stay in the office room on Artifice because one Old bird saw me and it was absolutely horrifying just hearing the cacophany of sounds behind the wall this was the first time I have been to Artifice and saw one btw because I got "lucky" on a challenge moon and had the opportunity to see them...what a first impression
It would be funny if when an earthworm swallows an old worm, you see it explode before it lands or the next time it resurfaces, and the old bird comes out unscathed
Hello! I’ve been watching your ai explained videos for a while, but then I stopped as of I’ve been on vacation, however when I heard you posted this I came straight to it! This was a great informal breakdown (as always) and I’d appreciate it if the next episode was on the nutcracker (I think it’s the name? Dude with shotgun idk) enemy, thanks for your consideration,✌🏼
It looks like one can be easy counter, the problem is that normally, at least from what I have seen from videos is that more then 3 art active at a time after a short time, so the more time you take the more will be active and the harder it will be to dodge all the missiles coming your way
I would appreciate a video on Mimics next. From my experience, they seem to have partial wall hacks. I've had Mimics cut corners to reach me even after breaking line of sight and moving away from the last place they've seen me.
Also I don't fully understand their chase mechanic, like when they raise their arms. Sometimes, they just follow you slowly. Other times, they chase. Hitting them with a shovel seems to reset this, but other times they'll immediately go back into chase mode.
Unless the wiki page is wrong about this Old Birds have a fixed number of them that can be spawned on any of the maps, they're available on its why on Embrion you can literally see 20 of them because their spawn chance is high enough to allow that many to spawn (not to mention the outdoor spawn pool allowing it as well)
heres some more info on old birds- he Old Bird (or RadMech in the game files) is an Entity in Lethal Company. Old Birds appear as humanoid, mech-like entities, often spawning on 5-Embrion and 68-Artifice. They are significantly tall, equipped with a large spotlight on their head, as well as three speakers, two of which are mounted on their shoulders, and another much larger one on their torso. Being purpose-built weapons of war, these entities are armed with ranged weaponry. Coupled with the ability to fly, and several different offensive capabilities. These armaments make the Old Bird a hazardous threat to employees when active RADAR Pip Size Large Power Level 3 Max Spawned 20 Traits Behavior Roaming (Walking and Flying) Chasing (Sprinting and Flying) Attack (Missile, Stomping, Squishing, Grabbing) Dwells Outside Vitality Shovel HP ∞ Shock Response Susceptible Offense Attack Damage 30 (Missile Attack) 10 (Stomp Attack) 70 (Squish Attack) 20 (Grab Attack) DPS Varies by distance (Missile/Stomp/Squish Attack). bestiary info The Old Bird is an autonomous, offensive weapon of war with a humanoid design. Measured at 19 feet tall and 11 feet wide, its two most defining visual features are the spotlight positioned on its head, capable of emitting 100,000 lumens, and the long-range acoustic device on its chest, sometimes referred to as a sound cannon. There are additional speakers on its shoulders used to broadcast sound a long distance. The Old Bird's left arm is a claw, and its right arm is a nozzle capable of both launching rocket-propelled grenades and torching at close-range with a very hot flame. Old Birds are one of the first extra-orbital weapons to be used and mass-produced. The subject of who developed the Old Birds has been an intense debate since their first recorded appearance on December 18 of 2143, when over fifty Old Birds invaded the Anglen Capital. This is considered one of the first major causes for the downfall of the Anglen Empire. The most commonly upheld theory takes into account the tension between the Anglen and Buemoch military throughout the 2100's, however nothing has been proven in the centuries since. The design of the Old Bird, down to the tempering of metals, appears intended to conceal its origin. It has been called the "walking ransom letter." Old Birds' legs function as rockets, which allows them to travel long distances and find targets efficiently. But the most likely reason this feature exists is to help them enter and land from orbit. The material and fuel Old Birds rely on is similar to those of passenger space craft from around 2130. Old Birds land and stay at their target planet forever. Although they often have more than enough fuel for just one trip, no behavior has been found in their programming which suggests they could choose to "migrate". Still, there are unverified accounts of Old Birds travelling autonomously to a new planet after hundreds of years of dormancy. The Old Bird was historically referred to as the "Al", based off the code name it was given by the English military, the "A16-L31". In 2384, however, the song "Old Birds" released as a cult hit by the post-punk project Under Remora; just three years later, in his most famous work of the same name, street artist Land Eyrie depicted the automotons flying and landing between planets in an arrangement similar to a flock of geese--this is generally considered one of the most iconic and influential images of modern culture and solidified the modern nickname. In 2356, 5-Embrion was classified as Condemned for the purposes of travel or settlement by the Boat; Old Birds were described by witness accounts as "lining the horizon". Though to this day they appear inoperative, there is a reasonable risk that many are still in sleep mode, so the planet will likely keep its status. The small moon was likely used as a testing ground for the Old Bird's flying and landing capabilities.
Old birds only pose a threat in 68-Artifact and 5-Embrion. The latter is completely meaningless, and the former only spawns a maximum of 4 Old birds, and they will help you kill other entities. Overall, the Old bird only creates a terrifying atmosphere, but in reality, there is no threat like other entities: Forest Keeper's chasing speed, Baboon Hawk's team collaboration attack ability, and Eyeless Dog's sound perception attack.
Their factor of randomness is more than enough to consider them a threat, especially without jetpack. They can easily launch you away from where you want to go and while they often miss, if you’re carrying any significant amount of weight, that probably won’t save you.
He doesn't have enough subscribers to earn any real money from these videos, which means he's actually just doing this for the love of the game. If you can't like for that, idk man just support him and his collaborators
I’ve always found it odd that earth worms only target players instead of dogs or giants I feel that they are using a ton of energy just to get so little in return and it would be far more rewarding if they went after other creatures
