The air filter system on the Stihl 500 continues to disappoint

I do not like to take issue with small problems on otherwise good products. That being said....I feel it is justified in the case of the Stihl MS 500 i .The saw itself is a great saw as far as I can tell( I have been running it for about 2 months now). The issue I have is with the air filter system. The stock air filter does not really protect the saw like it needs to. The max flow does a much better job. I thought I had resolved the issue with the Max Flow...and then the next weakness in the air filter system emerged. The plastic piece that holds it on broke off . This was only after two months of use and under normal conditions( nothing hit the saw hard or anything like that). In my opinion Stihl really needs to do some work on the air filter system. There is a lot of room for improvement.

There is nothing, I mean nothing even close to the majesty of the coast redwoods. Tallest living things on earth and they grow super fast! Redwood forests are called Cathedral Forests on account of people having spiritual experiences when hiking through them. I lived in Humboldt County for a decade and I’m a graduate of Humboldt State University. I’ve done some cutting up there but nothing like what you do. I would give anything to have your job. In my opinion, you are one of the luckiest men on the planet. I can’t believe your office is the redwoods. Well done.

We started using 500s for cutting fire line last year. We’ve blown up 4 from overheating and shit getting in the carb flap. Granted it’s real hot and it’s 14 days of running back to back tanks all day without any break for them but the 461s handled it fine for the most part. Just a bad design of the max flow system for these saws in my opinion. And the stock filter just doesn’t cut it for what we use them for.

Very common issue. Another issue is fuel tank to small. Of course ar our age a break is good more often than not😂.

Yes...Im with you you on the extra break now and then! lol. Going to be 50 years old in October...my running days are behind me. Its just a steady walk now.

I have a 500i and I found that if I put a little grease under the stock air filter it reduced the amount of fine sawdust that got into the motor. It still seems that there may be some that is coming in directly from the top, but hoping another rubber washer might fix that. I emailed Stihl Canada about the concern with the air filter system, but have not heard anything from them.

I would spend the money and get a max flow....its far superior to the stock filter....

To me even when they aren’t broken they seem to suck tons of debris compared to a Husqvarna. They don’t spin the particles out of the air charge before the filter for some reason.

Double up the foam filter on the knob where the airfilter cover attaches to. Problem solved. Its a shame it doesn't come like that from the factory even now.

Thanks for the update- I have an Egan air filter for the 500i on order. Not sure if it will be any better.

I got the Egan for the reason it installs under the factory cover and over a year with no issues at all-

That’s one of the main reasons I ordered the Egan air filter. I spent some time researching the subject and looking at reviews of the different air filter options.

I ran the 500i for two days and finally decided to go back to my 372 because I did not like starting the 500i. Made my hand hurt, and seemed very laborsome compared to my husky. 500i sure out ran my husky but I’d rather be down on power with an easy to start saw than deal with starting that 500i

Yes...The Huskies are just easier on the operator overall I think. I do really like the power of the 500i ....so I am using it as my midrange saw for now.

My 500i is easy to start when compared to my 1993 O64av 85cc stihl with no decompression!

Think maybe the stock air filter mount handled the tension of the original air filter The max flow is a sizable foam filter, I’m pretty sure it puts a bit more pressure on the stock mounting system

Poor design for sure. I have the westcoast saw v stack and weenie on one and have ran the mayflower and the egan uni filter on another. The weenie actually filters the best but no cover. I've played with the stock cover to cover it but it's kinda janky. Wish they would have done more like the 462 filter set up.

Yep...I run them on my saws and 462 500i 661cm but you still have to cut hole in cover so it doesn't work in rain ☔. If they just changed the design so one could put bigger cover or change the mounting itself

You have to order the entire cover....and they blew me off at the saw shop as far as a warranty. They said the saw probably took a hard hit...and I know it did not. I just ordered the replacement piece and let it go. I did not want to argue about it. It was over fourty dollars...not a big expense compared to other parts on saws...but its annoying...the saw is barely two months old.

There are issues with the both the stock Stihl air filter setup, and the Max Flow setup. I have the Westcoast Saw/Redbeard green weenie on my 500i and thankfully there have been no issues. It seems like you have to compromise with this saw: either good filtration or a rain cover! All the best from Alaska!

Thanks for the input. Yes it is a source of frustration at this point. I screwed the flange thingy back on with small screws and ordered an entirely new plastic cover piece. Hopefully that sorts things out for now. I may end up trying the Redbeard at some point...at least on days when its not raining.

I run a velocity stack on my 500 and I live in Washington state. I've run it in the rain, snow and have had zero issues the oil sheds most of the water. Just don't leave it out in the open in the strip all night if it's raining. I made a cover to go over it for when I'm packing my saw in the back of the pick up or leaving it out on the strip over night when raining made out of an old power aid bottle that works great! Good luck with the ol 500.

Thats not good,husqvarna has the air filtration the best,I have a 500i and I like it except for that problem,I like things about both husqvarna and stihl,looks like they could learn from each other's mistakes,I'm sorry this happened to you,I hope they make it right for you

Thanks for the input. I agree...the Husqvarna air filter system is far better. If they combined the 500i with a Husqvarna style filter system...it would be darn near a perfect saw.

Sorry man.i know it sucks payed 1750.00 and got longer bar so 2000 fir a saw its realy shitt deal.if you complain or have issues the dealers and workers will say ohh well we sold 200 of them and no issues. Like I'm lieing or we are.i said to them yea well those are home land owners mostly and firewood guys guys that need to make a living shouldn't have to deal with ignorance and there corporate failures .all they have to do is change the mount design so people can run there own filters of course they won't so we have to pay them.ioo
