Following the success of the 2 XT-28 prototypes, four variants of the T-28 were produced during the years from 1949 to 1962.
T-28A
The first version was the T-28A built as a basic trainer. This model had the Wright R-1300 engine with a rating of 800 horsepower. The engine was a 7 cylinder air-cooled supercharged radial. 1,194 were built.
T-28B
The T-28B version is a US Navy version utilising the Wright R-1820 1,425hp engine. It had a 3 bladed propeller and belly mounted speed brake. 489 were built.
T-28C
The 28c, again another US Navy version but this time with shortened propeller blades, and a tail hook for carrier landings. 266 were built.
T-28D Nomad
The T-28D came onto the scene in 1962 of which there were 3 variants of the Nomad. Converted from the T-28B variant, all had the Wright R-1820 engine, however the mk1 had a 1300hp engine, the mk2 1,425hp,and the mk3 received the 1535hp engine.
These aircraft specially converted for the USAF were for counter-insurgency, reconnaissance, search and rescue, and forward air controller roles in Vietnam. Fitted with two underwing hardpoints. The later T-28D-5 had ammo pans inside the wings that could be hooked up to hardpoint-mounted gun pods for a better center of gravity and aerodynamics. 321 were converted by Pacific Airmotive (Pac-Aero).
Yours truly got a warbird experience to fly in this Trojan T-28D 'Mekong Moon' before I even did any training to become a pilot. Flying was in my blood before I left school.
