Welcome Back Akira Bike Project fans! In this next episode of "The Road So Far" series, I spend some time updating and going over the virtual pivot assembly, which is the whole front end of the bike rising up.
Follow along while I'm designing and building a fully functional high performance recumbent motorcycle inspired by Kaneda's ride in "Akira" in this ambitious motorcycle project.

i agree, this feature sets your bike apart for sure!

As a recumbent bicycle rider I can agree with using the handlebars as a dismount assist. I usually place my feet on the ground just before stopping and let my forward momentum assist me to a standing position. Obviously this would be a good practice on a motorcycle so your system would be a great help.

Thanks for this comment, I appreciate that feedback, I hadn't really thought about how recumbent bicycle riders must also face this problem and how they deal with it.

@@matus1976 btw, your comment about ingress/egress to the bike is quite astute. Im 99% certain Otomo included these details in the movie, because Japanese Anime and Manga Directors/creators at this time (80's) were like American Hollywood directors, Cameron, Scott, etc. They cared greatly about the realism of functional things inside the world's they created. I think it's a shame that for the most part these days, this type of thinking is ignored in mainstream productions in favor of dumb CGI spectacle, and even a lot of professional prop creation like other attempted versions of the Akira bike. You, on the other hand are doing something extraordinary, making something that makes sense in a fictional world, actually make sense in our own reality. This is far beyond a fan inspired project. This is something, if it all works out could seemingly in fact be mass produced one day (like the Fictional Bikes would be in Akira's world, or the Mech's in Gundam or Evangelion or Cybernetic enhancements and weaponry seen in Ghost in the Shell or Appleseed)!

@@retrops4261 This is such an awesome comment, thanks for taking the time to make it. Comments like these help keep me more motivated. I hadn't really thought about the decline in worldbuilding that CGI has enabled, but I think you're completely right. When actors actually had to physically interact with things, there would definitely be a strong incentive to make them sensible, and the good writers and artists will want to keep their worlds consistent. CGI makes it too easy to just ignore all of that (and I love doing 3D animation and have done it professionally) You're spot on too obviously with what I want to do with the project, this isn't just a one off fan build to make a cool looking bike - it's the foundation to launch a new platform of vehicles.

Hi again, long time. Good luck with the vid series. Agree that the swing up handlebars and cowling is a major plus. Otherwise gettin in and out would be a royal pain. Last thing anyone would want is a bike they need to crawl or climb awkwardly out of, while trying to not flip it off it’s “landing pads”. That alone would negate most comfort appeal of the bike.

@@matus1976 Oh, how does the pitch up steering work if the wheel is turned a bit? Or do users need to make sure they are aligned? Steel parts from tilt steering wheels dude. ;)
@matus1976
@matus1976 3 года назад
@@KellyStarks Definitely not going to just depend on the operator to keep them aligned! lol. They'll be a cylindrical toothed cogs connecting the floating handlebar steering column to the rigid frame column, and one of those will also be retractable as a solenoid to allow the disconnect and raising. Additionally they'll both be connected via aircraft type control cables, so when the front end is up, even if you turn it, the wheel will still turn, so they'll be aligned when you close it. I will however make it so you can not unlock and raise it unless the bike is off, or at least stopped. No crazy jetski like riding, which I know people will want to do.

@@matus1976 Shudder... Yes, crazy’s find insane enough things on normal bikes, you can be sure there is a desire out there to find a new way. ;) From the movie it just looks like the vowel and Handel bars swing up from a pivot above and behind the rear edge of the front wheel. I was surprised the steering connection to the front fork would become so complicated. Hummmm.. maybe rather then using cables in the steering, a rocker arrangement ( like in cars mounting shocks horizontally, and the rocker turns the suspension rise into a horizontal movement to the shocks) which seems much more rugged and easier to a just. Just a thought
