This clip is posted here to promote the purchase of the full length film about a great moment in American history which is all but forgotten today. Look for a DVD with the special feature on the making of this great move. John Wayne had a passion for the story of the Alamo, and went to great lengths to make this movie with a cast of thousands of extras. Nothing digital here!
Before the New York Trade Center was attacked, we remembered Pearl Harbor. Before Pearl Harbor, we remembered the Alamo where from February 23, through March 6, 1836, 153 men stood against tyranny of General Santa Anna and his battle-hardened Mexican army of 7,000. Today it is easy to overlook the great cost of liberty and freedom in the history of the United States. Beyond the movie, learn about the real Alamo, and the bravery of liberty-loving souls who stood hopelessly outnumbered, laying down their lives for the hope of a better tomorrow. This clip John Wayne's passion for the Alamo is clear as he expresses in the character of Davy Crockett, what the word "republic" means to him

No one ever defined "Republic" any better than this. This is what America is, a Republic, and we as Americans need to remember that and continue remembering it and reminding others that is what we are. As the Pledge of Allegiance states:. " I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands, One Nation UNDER GOD, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All!"

Damn I wish I had been able to actually meet The Duke in person. Sadly though he passed away just 5 short years before I was even born. My dad still made sure thought that I was raised on his movies and others like them so I would grow to be the man I am today. It makes me sad to see how so many haven't learned to be as patriotic and honorable as Wayne was. May you rest in God's grace, Wayne. You are truely missed.

Remember this movie and remember this Speech by the “Duke “… Even after all these years, not in it’s entirety ..just the emotion that was put into the dialogue in the movie...“Republic “

As a millenial, I try to show this to as many younger people I can. The dialog here is of utmost importance, especially during our current situation. As a Kentuckian I am very prideful and thankful to the 16 kentuckians who sacrificed their lives for the republic of texas.

Republic , This should be played in Congress EVERY DAY. Also in the Oval office. Schools we will let go to only once a month. Every night at 02:00 on every channel broadcasting in America. So let be written. So let it be done.

It cut off, but Travis is quoted to have said: "They, uh...seemed to have accomplished that." He was referring to Crockett's line about his Tennesseans coming South to "hunt and get drunk".

It’s a shame some of the footage from the negatives to The Alamo got damaged and beyond repair. Since the VHS release, this is why the movie is always edited. The beyond-repair-footage was edited out. The best way to watch this movie uncut is if any of you can get a laser disc version under the NTSC region.

There is a strange trait that seems to follow any film company that try to make a film about the Alamo. Why John Wayne made a film, which is almost a carbon copy of anotther Alamo movie, "The Last Command", only a few years after that particular film proved a flop, one can only speculate on. Then they made another version in the late 1990's - early 2000's which also proved a failure.
@dauntless0711
@dauntless0711 5 лет назад
I think Wayne’s version stands up best out of the 3. “The Last Command” was utterly boring, and was only told from the perspective of Jim Bowie. Considering he fell deathly ill a couple days into the siege, this was a terrible idea. The modern remake is just too conventional to get you invested in the characters. I know it’s historically accurate, but the final battle being in the dark just wasn’t as cinematic as Wayne’s spectacle. Wayne’s version didn’t spare any expense. It has the most historically accurate Alamo recreation by far, the costumes are decent, the lead acting is fantastic, but most importantly, it captured the moral of the story best. The purpose and value of defending the fort is discussed, and the courage of the defenders is made clear. They talk knowing full well they are going to die, and the audience reflects on their own mortality because of it. Even if it’s a somewhat clumsy call to patriotism at the end of the day, at least you can feel something more than the other 2.

Unfortunately, this plodding film, besides being highly inaccurate historically, suffers from this kind of long-winded sermonizing throughout its first 80%. Only the last half hour or so is even remotely interesting, though still inaccurate.

@march1836 Saying it doesn't make it so. It's like saying John Ford was a fake director. doesn't make it so. Wayne's, and Ford's fillms are some of the most iconic movies of all time with countless films attempting to duplicate the films in both landscape and cinematic scope. Part of the reason why the areas used to film are called Ford Country and the characters Wayne portrayed are some of the most talked about roles of all time. Get a life and stop crying.
