The original vocal he sampled says, "...soon you'll under-sta-aand..." but the way he cut it, and the tempo at which he sped it up to make it say, 'hold you down'. The song is by Al Kooper, Love Theme From "The Mailman" In case you want to look up the record and hear the original vocal. You can hear the snippet at the end of the song. Such a banger!!!!

Great reaction. One of my absolute fav songs from that era. Hard beat and verses, alongside a beautiful r&b hook by Nina Sky. Alchemist is def in my top 10 goat producers. His latest stuff with Griselda, Larry June, Freddie Gibbs, Curren$y etc is more lo-fi and oftentimes lacks drums, but his earlier stuff like "Hold You Down" shows he can do that boom bap at a high level whenever he wants to.

In a list of producers, make sure you check out an NYC Kat named Nick Wiz & J-Love got great beats too but he has a tendency to shout on his records like Kay Slay & DJ Clue. His beats when you remove the yelling are MONSTEROUS! Check both J-Love & Nick Wiz but also check for DJ Honda (from Tokyo, Japan) & Ayatollah! Honorable mentions are Marco Polo, Nottz, Apollo Brown, 9th Wonder, DJ Muggs (from Cypress Hill), BuckWild, Statik Selektah & the MoleMen from Chicago. ALL of them great producers! I believe these guys I mentioned might also impress you. Similar to Alchemist. Oddisee is another good producer as well.
