I'm responding prior to listening to the video. While ideally, Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit can change your life and cure you from addiction That being said, I went to AA for a couple of years, and it is NOT a cult. It's just a bunch of drunks helping each other stay sober. The program makes sure to rotate tasks and rotate those who lead the meetings. The Lords prayer is done almost every meeting location. You can join, you can leave and you can come back. This program is sometimes the 1st step atheists take to becoming open to a higher spiritual power, which the book of AA states is God. Forming AA relationships and friendships allows down the road the ability to preach Jesus and the Gospel outside the meeting.

the good news is hundreds of thousands of lives are saved across the world because of the work of AA throughout the years, it is not another religion or cult. When Apologia Studios matches the number of Alcoholics who have their lives back then knock it but I doubt very much you shall. Before you start preaching I am a Christian. AA saves lives your remit is souls.

This was a great podcast, I had a friend in AA practicing Kundili Yoga and I had just come to christ, I saw the evil and lostness this eastern god was brining to this friend and that's when I left AA. I realized I couldn't stay in AA and attack her higher power and I realized it would keep happening. A week after leaving AA, one of my customers who knew nothing about me gave me a reformation study bible.

I was once a slave to addiction. Went to Rehab several times. Still didn't work. Countless NA meetings. Didn't work. One night in jail Christ radically changed me and gave me a new heart. This March will mark 10 years drug free. No meetings or secular help needed. ALL GLORY TO GOD ALONE!

I went from atheism to believing that others believed in God to believing it was possible for there to be a God to believing in God through the 12 steps of narcotics anonymous. Then a friend shared the gospel with me and I believed. It still blows my mind. One day I hated Christians, the next I was a Christian. I no longer attend those types of groups because they're so limited and it just seems that people are ok being off of drugs and don't want much more from life. The Gospel and the command to go and make disciples has given me purpose in life. Grateful that God chose me though I don't deserve His love or forgiveness.

I can totally relate to pastor Jeff ... I'm 6 yrs sober from opiate addiction ... By God's grace alone. 6 yrs ago I was a non believer in a dark life style that I welcomed and cherished with open arms. It was through intercessory prayer that led to a divine intervention with my maker, where He turned my heart of stone to flesh and filled me with His Spirit. I've never been the same since. No detox, no recovery program, no AA, I didn't even go through withdrawals. Just Christ, His Church and discipleship. I'm no longer an addict, I've been set free, I'm forgiven .... All Glory to God.

I'd like to see what model you are using for Christian recovery. I agree with you on most points, I got sober in AA, but left eventually because It still left me feeling empty. Your point about continuing to identify as Alcoholic, drug addict, etc, is so true. I stopped counting, days and the day I got sober. I know count the day I finally submitted to Christ. I’m an alcoholic/addict. 4 years clean and sober. I go to meetings regularly and believe the program works. Jesus Christ is now my Higher Power but he wasn’t when I first started. I live in a small town, many of us in the program go to the same church now. I continue going to meetings for the newcomers that come in because there were “oldtimers” there for me when I first went. I believe we continue to call ourselves alcoholics/addicts even though we are now sober so that the newcomer can relate and find hope that by hearing our story, they too, can get sober. I think cult is a strong word. I found Jesus Christ through the AA program and now have the opportunity to spread the good news to newcomers.

I’m loving your testimony. Congrats. You got lucky that you found Jesus in that program. Keep going long as you can to continue sharing the gospel. Most groups will not hear of Him at all ever. Except those few times that a person mentions Jesus and gets told “we don’t mention Jesus in here”, unfortunately. The reason they want us to identify as an alcoholic is so that we never forget that we are powerless against alcohol and that we are dependent on the 12 step ideology for our daily deliverance. It is exactly the opposite of how to empower a person. Bill Wilson only wanted money for the book. He did not care if we stayed sober. That’s why I’m glad you’re in there. 🤍

@@Concetta20 ......so it seems like they are trying to attack their competition. Bill W. started AA because drunks that were trying to stop weren't welcomed by churches or society and needed help from The Gid of the Bible and others like them fast forward 23 years later, and Bill W. sat down with Jimmy K. because addicts couldn't relate to alcoholics in AA, and therefore had a harder time getting clean. Unfortunately not all meetings are like that. In Florida there are a lot of rooms where you can share you found and have a higher power but once you say you are Christian or glorify Jesus you get ran over. They do not want to hear it. However if you say your higher power is a rock, your family or the Book than hey talk about it all you want with no bad looks or chastisement. Sad

fascinating. Christ alone delivered me after I used heroin everyday for twenty plus years. After I was set free a friend invited me to a couple of NA meetings. I tried to understand but soon came to realize that they wanted me to believe that I was still bound to drugs and if I didn't admit that then I was going to go back to using. I never went to another meeting nor did I ever go back to drug use. That was more than ten years ago. All glory to our most Holy and precious Savior.

Thank you for this. You touched on several of the practices that bother me about AA. I've been going to meetings free of alcohol for 5 years. The continued identity and bondage of your addiction ("Hi, I'm ___ and I'm a ___) has bothered me for sometime. Don't introduce yourself like that and you get glares. The "higher power" saying is so unacceptable to me as a believer in Jesus Christ and the saving grace given to me freely. AA didn't free of my addiction, an incredible undeserved redemption from Jesus did. So....why do I still go? The fellowship and friendships I have formed for one. Secondly, the opportunity to share the gospel with ones that may have never heard it are there. Several of us have started a Bible study at our particular "club" in hopes of giving others the opportunity to find where the real power against addiction is.

I tried to continue going to meetings for a couple of months after getting saved. I would introduce myself as a "transformed addict" .My friends sort of patronizingly listened to my story of redemption and a few even showed up to my baptism, but they had an inability to understand what the Gospel did for me. Their many years of indoctrination was too much for me to break through. I'll leave that up to the Lord to save them when He calls them. It's the newcomer that I feel like needs the evangelism, and Isimply can't bring myself to go back to those rooms and pretend to talk their talk. More power to you, brother if the Lord has given you the strength to reach these poor souls.

I had a very bad experience in AA. Like bullying and the “mean girl” mentality type stuff. AA as a whole is a lost organization but the individual souls do need saving. Thank you so much for this discussion! 5 years ago, after 23 in NA, I was saved by the Holy Spirit bringing Christ to me and my wife seemingly out of nowhere. We tried to continue to attend meetings and to maintain our long held friendships in NA, but after becoming more and more involved in study of the Word and forging new relationships with our church family, we couldn't continue and had to leave what we had realized was a false religion. I had to reassess my belief in the "disease model" of addiction and bring into my heart that the whole problem was a sin issue based on idolatry. Their basic text says the belief that"once and addict always an addict" was dead in NA, yet you had to identify yourself as an addict over and over again. This was a clear contradiction that was never addressed. Such a sad loss of hope; that your "disease" would be with you forever, that the best you could do is keep it "in remission". Our identity is in Christ, not a shared sin that has been rebranded as an illness. I praise the Lord for bringing me out of sin and idolatry to Christ and out of the NA cult, and I pray for those wonderful, loving, deceived people in 12 step programs, that the Spirit saves them as He did my wife and me five years ago.

It's been such a long journey for me. Ive battled addiction and idolotry since childhood. Ive sought Christ, believed a bit, but always gone back to what I've always done. Addiction. It was like looking at Christ through a keyhole. I've done AA so many times, because that's what everyone around has suggested to do. Today...i mean right now, today... I've endured the hardest trials of my life. And, it is only through Christ's love and God's mercy and grace, that i made it. I have hope. Finally. God has always been there, waiting for my brokenness to bring me to humility, to my knees. I submit, repent, i have nothing left. I give it all to Him. I know the light is rising, and that He has a plan and a purpose for me...for us. Thanks Pastor Jeff and crew. Keep spreading the true Gospel. Ill pray for the mission, and spread the word throughout ny own life. Love you guys. ❤

While sitting in jail on serious charges I began to look at the 12 steps with my cell mate. I made it to step 2 and realized where I had always failed. How can I believe in a higher power that doesn't actually have power. Does a door knob have power? Or my personal higher power from my past... The life that I have always wanted. Well, what happens when what I really want for my life is to not be sober? That becomes my higher power. I began to think about this logically and realized that I needed the true God because He's the only One with the power to heal me. It's been 4 yrs (I was spared from 20yrs in prison) and I acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. A higher power that has no power is useless.

I went to AA and accumulated 26 years clean. But no inner or heart change. As a result the walls were closing in and I knew I was going to return to my vomit. Through circumstances I wound up at a church. They were in Galatians. The pastor preached and then ended with the gospel. I was convicted and went home. All that week my conviction overwhelmed me. I remember a point where I said "Lord I can't do this anymore I need you". I put my trust in Christ. Today I am involved in christian addiction ministry. 2 Corinthians 5:17. Amen

The 12 steps began in a Christian fellowship in 1934 called the Oxford group. The recovered alcoholics from the Oxford Group realized that alcoholics of all types of belief systems around the world were dying of alcoholism and their families were suffering .So they opened the idea of Faith as wide as possible so anybody that was willing to believe could come through. I think the Bible refers to it as having the faith of a mustard seed. Which is a tiny tiny little seed. Go where you feel comfortable. Gods miracle working through the 12 step programs have kept me free from addiction for 28 years now. But I believe God comes to many people in many different ways ❤️🙏❤️ spiritual pride can be a deep dark pit. When I start to believe I know what God's will is for you I have fell into that pit.

that's the mentality/brainwashing attempt they have. they say. oh if you don't stick around AA your going to die. you'll relapse you'll end up in prison , or a behavioral unit. If you want to feel true freedom, turn to Jesus, have true freedom...call on the name of the Lord, and you wont get stuck in this pattern.. I know a lot of people who s life isn't about who they used to be...their identity is in Christ. and now they care more about leading people to Christ. missions, orphans, widows....subject matter that is way bigger then themselves. other then focusing on the selfish, self centered, self seeking life that all about them...

My older (and only) sister has tried the 12 step program multiple times throughout the years and has completed it at least once. She is 42 years old and still struggles with drug addiction. She lost her 4 kids to the state in her early 30's. She has entered rehab yet again for the umpteenth time here recently. Yes, the problem with these drug recovery programs is it's missing the recognition of sin and the salvation of Jesus Christ. How can anyone truly change their behavior if they don't truly understand why it's wrong? I continue to pray for my sister because that's all I know how to do. Her addiction is out of my control, but not out of God's control! Please pray for my sister. Her name is Jessica. My husband and I were both in treatment for alcoholism. Without understanding what was happening I realized later that was when I was saved. Two to three years later I was asked to share my story at an open meeting. I shared that my higher power was Jesus Christ and some of what had been changed in my life. After that meeting we were basically shunned which ended up being providential for us. From there we ended up in an Evangelical church “family”.

I lost a sister to overdose in 2021...she was only 30 and has 3 beautiful boys...they found her. I regret not better explaining how much I loved her and how much more Jesus cared for her to die for her. Yet we grew up in the same home..a true Christian home. So she knew the gospel. My heart grieves for where she most likely is spending eternity. So now my prayer is to be more bold with my faith...to not fear speaking truth boldly when given the opportunity! I never struggled with substance addiction..but the people that do/did would seem to gravitate to me. I know so much about AA & NA. When I learned of my now ex husband's porn addiction and habitual physical cheating I went to CR. I do know that my sister was crying out for help...but after listening to this I'm wonder if my family failed to remind my sister of the Gospel when she cried out for help. She had reached out to our mom 4 days before her death. My sister was introduced to drugs by her husband...he fooled her and our family about being born again. He got her hooked and then did horrible things to her- at one point he prostituted her. I'd say her own sin lead her to stay down that road. How does a reformed Christian approach these types of stories? Because my sister was a victim...granted she struggled to say no and reject something unholy, but her own husband was abusing her in other ways before adding drugs. Death of a loved one who was struggling so much in life leaves you with so many questions!

I'm sorry for you lose Michelle. I know how it feels to be desperate and angry over a loved one's refusal to accept the gospel. If you are one of God's own kids he is not holding it against you that you were not more bold. We go through season in life and everything is working together for our good. We will be bold one day because at it is written. He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it. Don't be so hard on yourself nor beat yourself up. God is not expecting anything from your dead flesh. If you believe that Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and rose from the dead for your sins then you are born again. And God does not see your failures nor mine. He is preparing everything around you to bring you closer to him and to help you know who you are in him and how good his love is toward you. It is a sad story that many of our loved ones will not be in heaven. However God is good and if someone would really believe in him he wouldn't let them go to hell. He is constantly reaching out to everybody through anybody he uses. Just because he didn't reach out to your sister through you doesn't mean that he wasn't capable to save her nor did he ignore her. It's good to see that we are failures. That is the process of God revealing that it is he who has finished the works. We only get to walk in them by beholding Christ. See it is not about us nor our failure it is all about Jesus and his ability and strength. You will fail 100,000 more times but God's love to you will always be vibrant. And he will never hold anything against you because you have once believed in him. It doesn't matter how badly you act from this point or if you forever fail. Christ has you in his hands. He will never leave you nor forsake you. And he is capable to save people without your help. I'm sorry if this offends you. The message of the cross is offensive to the natural man.

This episode is fantastic. On Tuesday of this week I had about a 2.5 hour conversation with a man who was and still is very dedicated to the 12 steps/AA model, etc. He is a man who says that he was "rescued from darkness", who believes in a god who is love, etc. However, he is a man who wants nothing to do with the Scriptures nor does he believe in Jesus Christ alone for peace with God. In the course of our conversation I felt (more than once) that I was evangelizing Mormon missionaries. I kept bringing our conversation back to "Who is God?", "How has God revealed Himself in the Bible?", "Who are we by nature according to God's word?" and what does Jesus Christ say about Himself and what it means to have a right relationship with God. As I mentioned, there was the necessity to bring the conversation back (and not be content with the two of us using the word "God") again and again to "Who is God?"/"How has God revealed Himself?" As the conversation progressed it became very evident to me that the AA model is another religion - as the episode says, a 'cult'. After reading back through the 12 step book last night, I observed that the sponsors sound like "evangelists", AA is propped up (at least the model) as a "savior", the members of AA take the role of the Holy Spirit and, in adopting the AA model, there is an "emergence into new life" (the miracle of regeneration). And sadly, in the end (as was emphasized many times in this episode), it leaves men cleaner on the outside, but does nothing about their sin against a holy God and does not deal with His justice and wrath against them. It robs men of the One in whom they can have redemption. Thank you, brothers, for this episode. I hope that it will drive Christians to the Scriptures and to view this "cult" for what it is and embolden believers to present God as He has revealed Himself and His Son Jesus Christ in the gospel.

Yes, AA is a false religion of idolatry. No doubt about it. The Spirit of truth and the written word has revealed this to me. AA is Universalism. AA does not exalt the name, the person and the work of Jesus Christ, therefore it is not the work of the Holy Spirit. But I still go to AA and exalt the name, the person, and the work of Jesus Christ. They haven't kicked me out yet. I will continue to fight for the truth.

I just watched this video and first want to say that I appreciate the work you're doing with this platform. So helpful and so useful. I am actually an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 10 years and after some consideration decided to watch this video to hear what you had to say. I want to be clear that I am a sinner, in desperate need of a Saviour, and that is why I'm a Christian. I'm subscribed to the channel and enjoy the content very much. With that being said, I wanted to share that I actually do agree with much of what you said about meetings. With regards to the steps, I would highly highly suggest that you take a look at the history of AA. AA was not designed to be what it has become today. In fact, when AA started, the Bible was studied and the emphasis on meditation (contemplation) was directed at contemplating what was read in the Bible. The understanding of insanity is actually soundness of mind, not what is spewed in AA meetings. Unfortunately, the words and statements made in the big book are taken out of context and not shared or utilized with their intended purpose. Things shared in meetings are usually coming from an intellectual stand point and not coming from the perspective of a reborn human being. Bill W. actually had an experience with God while in a hospital where he was detoxing and in the big book, he gives all glory to "the Lord". He knew undoubtedly that without God he was nothing and it came to him that he needed to help others and set out to do so. The "fake it til you make it" or "I'm always an alcoholic" is actually in direct conflict with the big book. The book is clear and states over and over that we "recover". We're not forever recovering. It also clearly states "that we WERE alcoholic..". Those statements are actually coming from people who haven't had a real experience with God and have not been reborn. I certainly see what you mean about AA being an idol however, if you have not been changed internally through salvation, you will idolize anything. AA is not designed to be God or to replace God. It is designed to guide you to God. The inventory process is designed to bring to light our sinful nature. Steps six and seven are repentance. And as we have been reborn, we come to want to serve God and others so we continue to show up to meetings to share with them that they can recover. Unfortunately, not everyone truly experiences what AA has to offer or what it's intended purpose is. I personally continue to go to AA, as indicated previously, to help others which I believe that that's what God would have me do. Just as you go to abortion clinics to save lives, I do the same in AA (I go to help save lives). I block out most of what is shared in meetings because it's not sound. It's in direct conflict with the intent of the program. Again, I would highly suggest that, laying aside what you've heard in AA meetings, you look into the history of Alcoholics Anonymous and where and how the principles of the program came to be. May God bless you. Thank you for the work you do.

Seems like what you're saying is that it's the intent that counts. Is that right? You're saying "yes, Jeff AA is doing ____ and _______ and _____ but what it was meant to be is _________." If I mean to write a term paper and I copy notes from a published article and hand it in the way it was written will I be judged by the teacher based on my intent to complete the assignment or will I be judged on the plagiarism? Honestly I don't know what year AA was invented but nobody is attending AA that year now. So, how does that remain relevant? I'd also ask you to put an answer out here directly....to this question: When AA was invented was the program specifically naming Jesus Christ? In its papers? Literally in its daily services? Not that it's relevant because even if it was it hasn't been for decades. At least 30 years from what I know. The bottom line I this, IMO Do you cosign for idolatry or do you not? Regardless of good deeds done.

I struggled with addiction for 6 years until I had a deliverance session in August where my family casted at least 4 demons out of me in the name of Jesus. That day forward I ran full speed into the arms of Christ. I had been convinced that God had given up on me and that this addiction and dying from an overdose was my purpose but that was a lie from the devil. I've been to rehab 8 times and countless NA and AA meetings prior to this deliverance. I'm now clean 5 months and I see how AA/NA contradicts the Word of God. @@toddcote4904 God's truth says not to make provision for the flesh, to gratify it's lusts and to pray that we are not even lead into temptation. An alcoholic drinking a thimble full of wine is well beyond the point of temptation. We are new creations in Christ and still living in our weekend mortal flesh. When we pass on we will be freed from our flesh and will no longer need to use communion to remember Christ because we will see him face to face. The one who told us to pluck out our eyes if we can't control our lust wouldn't say learn to drink responsibly if you're an alcoholic. AA is not a cult in any way shape or form. There is no promise of salvation or spiritual resurrection in the 12 steps. AA is simply a group of people who meet with the express purpose of sharing experience, strength, and hope from working the 12 steps. Not a group of Christians seeking to proselytize. Saying I'm an alcoholic doesn't mean make it our identity. It's an acknowledgement of our weakness. I was against God in those days so AA was perfect for me. It created the illusion of God, with no real needed change unless it fit into my own sense of morality. I took many to AA and was heavily programmed by the dogma. The God of my understanding prevalent in AA led me deep into the New Age and extreme darkness. That went on for 21 years. Through it all i was extremely resistant to Christ. I ranted against Christ at meetings and online constantly, then boom, i had an experience of Gods grace which changed everything and i was saved. True understanding of Jesus Christ was the only thing that made me better understand myself and my problems. Also thank God for the plants on this earth that helped me fight withdrawals. Anyway quick point about addiction that I already made in a reply on another comment. Addiction and the “recovering addiction” thing and treating it like a mental illness is only making it seem as though you can never get truly better. Because you have “addictive personality” which is just all bogus. You are renewed through Jesus Christ so you must seek a new life! Which starts by changing core behaviors and habits you have in your day to day. Heck I was changing the music I even listened to at the time. Having others I could talk about God with was huge too. Also one more point, I don’t like the phrase “going to hell” because it is referred to as the second death. There is no eternal life outside of Jesus Christ. When thrown to the lake of fire the secularists will die the second death. So I think when you say go to hell, people that don’t believe think of Hollywood version of suffering in hell for eternity. Which makes no sense Biblically.

I have maintained that all addiction has the same root source, the big void we try to fill with things like alcohol or other drugs, sex, video games ,bodybuilding, cool cars etc and they all have the same solution that is the father and the son and the holy spirit but that is not offered in rehab or AA or any 12 step program. Watching this reminded me of that and as I was listening to Luke talk this thought formulated in my brain. If someone was intoxicated 24/7 for years and then got sober going to AA and stayed sober for 25 years and on that anniversary day you asked them if they wanted to celebrate with a drink they would probably say no way because they aren’t actually free from the addiction to alcohol. If your free from the addiction you should be able to have a drink or two without it becoming a problem.

Would you say that to a heroin addict? “Want to celebrate with a shot?” VERY weak and potentially evil argument.

I agree with you on the AA. 💯. Ive been saying this for 5 years. One day I cried out to God after an overdose and God lead the way from there. I now help women in recovery, most or all attend AA. The false hope they receive is so disheartening to me. I see so many come and go and come and go because they haven't surrendered their sin to Jesus. They will read and follow AA big book because it's the easy way, so they think. They get to keep their other sin that way. They will religiously follow the big book, but will not pick up a bible. It's so sad. I tell everyone that AA does not provide external life through Jesus. AA is so programmed to fixing only this life, partically, but leaves off the most important thing, the next life. On issue of CR, i disagree. I accepted Jesus and became a follower of Jesus because i went to CR. I had tried AA, and to think i could pick any god was something not in my heart. God kept me sober 2 years until I was ready, not only believe, but to proclaim Jesus as my Lord and Savior. And now lead the CR program at my church. There is so much more than you realize in this program. The gospel is given and taught. Its not just for the alcoholic or addict....it's for any SIN or struggle because the main goal is to build a relationship with Christ. There are individual lessons taught weekly. There is a deep bible study that takes 6 months called a step study. People don't identify with prior sin. People introduce theirselves as grateful believers and followers of Jesus Christ, the one and only true higher power. I highly suggest buying the leader's manual and you will get a better idea of this program. Thank you for getting this message out and more importantly I thanked God that you got this message out!

I am reading this as a Christian from an AA obsessed rehab. I really like what you say here because Jesus wants us to be in fellowship with one another, confessing our sins to each other and we really don't get that true, honest intimacy from just going to church. We need more as believers. And CR is a good start as long as Jesus is always the focus and the only one who gives us victory.

@ApologiaStudios I watched this when it first aired, but have returned. As somebody who left AA 4 years ago for much these same reasons. Yesterday I received an invitation from my old home group. First email in 18 months. All I could think was how quickly I'd as a disabled woman would be escorted out of an open meeting for evangelizing and sharing the truth about the occult origins of the program.

Thank you for this video! It is refreshing to finally hear someone explain why AA does not help addicts. Statistically, I think it has a one or 2% success rate. At least, that’s what I have read. Several years ago, a friend referred me to Al-Anon, for people who have to deal with addicts. My idol was an abusive boyfriend. The concepts were a bit helpful, but I couldn’t relate to the victim mentality and felt quite out of place. Finally one day, a very sweet older lady told me that I would never be free from this abusive man if I didn’t keep going to meetings. My response? “Watch me!” I did not go back and got rid of the abuser within the next two months. The victim mentality is depressing and full of hopelessness. You never actually solve your problem.

I totally agree with the stances shared about AA. I experienced it for myself and had a huge problem with the over-identification with substance abuse. Very cultish indeed. However, the CR that I attend was the very first place that I heard the gospel and it is shared at the opening of every single gathering. & with deep reverence. During group shares most open with “hi my name is... and I’m a grateful believer in Jesus Christ”. It is completely centered within Christ and I’ve seen non believers walk in and be transformed. Not every church will be able to get it right unfortunately, but that goes deeper than their CR program. As for the 12 steps being an inherently pagan system, I understand that stance but I also know that the 12 steps DO work to an EXTENT. This is because there is truth found within them, but that truth has been highly distorted and leaves out the core truth that is Our Savior, Jesus. I see CR as reclaiming those truths - that the pagans distorted to keep people looping in sin - and restoring the pure intention of redemption by centering the steps in Christ. I can’t speak for any CR’s but the one I go to, but it exposed me to the truth. Just like church, sometimes you need to shop around. Community is huge with healing addiction/trauma & you need others who’ve tasted those things in a similar way to be able to move forward in the sanctification process. I’d say above all, pray and ask Jesus to lead you. But it is possible there is a CR that is centered in Christ near you.

Amen brother. I went to AA for about two years. I got saved, and finally saw how outlandish their philosophy was. I now go once a month only to share the gospel. There’s nothing for me there now. They are told to literally “make” God whatever they want him to be.

@@auntbeewannabee4626 I read the Dr. Bob biography written by his son. He mentions they messed around with occult stuff quite often. He also mentions they read from the Bible everyday. AA was called "The James Club" named after the book of James because they focused on that and the sermon on the mount. Just look at the 12 steps and then read the sermon on the mount and tell me the difference. You can go and tour Dr. Bob's house in Akron. The Bible they read from everyday is still there. There's a big difference between Dr. Bob and Bill Wilson, don't conflate the two.

Love all you do and the message being delivered, but image also matters, it’s not really a gentle, lovely, pure, godly image, even a 6 year old sees that 😢 It undermines the power of what is being communicated.

Thank you, thank you, for addressing this! I used to attend AA meetings until the Lord placed it on my heart in 2020 (when meetings halted), that AA was a cult and I was idolizing it. In His faithfulness, He revealed that people were clinging to AA rather than to Christ. Idolizing AA and it’s “principles” that was based out of fear. Example: if I don’t attend three meetings a week I will relapse, etc. Fear based practices, and I have remained in contact with one person who still attends those meetings. Whatever happened to the hundreds that were my so-called friends? Funny how when we decided to step away from the cult of AA, how are “friends” deem us unworthy of love. So very Christ-like of them… Again, I cannot thank you all enough!

In total agreement until you said you were taking ex alcoholics to have drinks. Romans 14 21 says not to drink in front of your brother if it makes them stumble or weak. It's ok to refrain totally even if you're changed by Jesus.

when people stand up introduce themselves the way that they do in AA it is basically like when Paul says that God came to save sinners “of whom I am the foremost”. In that statement Paul is not saying that he isn’t redeemed or Christ has done no work in him, rather it is the power of Christ in him not his own doing and that he still is a sinner.

I have struggled on and off with shopping addiction, which stems from past trauma, lifelong depression and anxiety, female adult ADD, etc. But ultimately, it’s SIN: idolatry, greed, and being a poor steward of my money. Due to this, I was a part of Celebrate Recovery (CR) for the better part of eight years between two cities, even leading the women’s small groups and step studies at both. I won’t claim that it was all bad, and there were many genuine, Jesus-loving people whom I was privileged to know. Many of my experiences echoed your sentiments about early Apologia, especially when it came to the excitement, honestly, and vulnerability. However, I came under conviction almost three years ago, when I started getting into discernment ministries. Firstly, I watched The Church of Tares, and that’s when my eyes were opened regarding Rick Warren and Saddleback Church. Even though Rick Warren isn’t directly responsible for CR, I no longer wanted to be associated with anything connected to Saddleback. Secondly, in many cases, CR was being used as a substitute for attending regular church. Which, I suppose if you were someone off the street, then it’s better that you’re in CR than no place at all. But for people like me, I should have made a solid church my main priority, not CR. And even though both CRs were connected to churches that were OK doctrinally, people from various other denominations brought their bad doctrine in, and it became a jumbled mess. There were a couple Pentecostal ladies who went to a church pastored by a woman, and once they even invited a woman pastor to speak for a bit. That’s just the beginning, but you get the point. Thirdly, I became convicted that the program eisegeted scripture and, in some cases, twisted it to fit their purposes. I became aware when leading a woman’s group, and once even added in my own opinion to the group that I felt a particular passage was mishandled. Lastly, because I was in leadership roles at both CR groups I was a part of, certain people would take advantage of both myself and fellow people in leadership. People who only knew how to use and knew no boundaries. For a people-pleaser like myself who didn’t know how to say no to anyone, it became overwhelming, and between being at different events 2-3 times a week, giving rides, and more, I was tapped out. At my first CR, I got chewed out for not being able to give someone a ride the day after flying home cross-country. I felt like a free taxi service. A friend at the time also left, in part because someone was trying to take advantage of her financially (she was well off and the user could sniff it from a mile away). I didn’t leave with any animosity, but there were people who no longer spoke to me after my departure (some because I was no longer their free ride). Others still contact me, wishing I would come back, but I’ve held the line and have moved on from that era in my life. Praise be to God!

Once an addict always an addict simply means that if a person has the disease of addiction no matter how long they are sober… if they put the drug/ drink in their body they have the same result they always had… for those of us who have the physical allergy we must come to terms that we can’t safely use. God gives us the power to stay away from it, HE removes the obsession but it doesn’t change the reality that if people like me picked up we would have the same result.. it takes over.

First, I’m so sorry for what you have been going through. I know how much it hurts to deal with someone who won’t give up their sin and their idols. Second, even as a Christian, you are not responsible for your mom‘s mess. We, even as Christians, should not try to spare people, even loved ones, the consequences of their sin. It doesn’t help them if we do that. I don’t know if this helps, but there it is for what it’s worth. I am praying for you.

I was sober for 12 years in AA and sober for an additional 13 years outside of AA. Total of 25 years sober and then finally saved by Christ. Oddly i fell into a deep depression after being saved and drank for 5 days eventually being hospitalized. I havent drank since (6 months now) but have attended AA again, mostly to keep from being isolated. However i have recently felt convicted that it goes against Christianity and promotes more of a new age false religion with the idea of worshipping any god you want. I believe there is a lot of good in AA but so much i dont agree with which is why i stopped attending years ago even before I was saved by Jesus. I feel conflicted as i desperately need fellowship and havent found it in church. I continue to pray on this 🙏🏻

You are clueless about A.A. Read the 12 Steps and learn how they relate to Scripture. In simplest terms the Steps say: Belive that God will save you. Look at your sins. Ask forgiveness of your sins. Repent from your sins and ask forgiveness when we sin again. Seek God's will for us. Live these principles.
