Not really, the lore is basically that that cold war is essentially over, though there are factions, on at least the UEE side, that aren't really happy with the improving relations, it is unlikely that either Empire will attack the other, but there might be attacks carried out either way by rogue factions like XenoThreat...
I'm not sure they were ever staring us down, I think UEE analysts may simply not have the best picture of Xi'an psychology. Did they build an advanced Medium Fighter to *destroy* hornets, or take their contracts? Is this an invasion fleet, or a deliberate seed for security through economic codependence?
Great lore post as always ... and excellent timing. Before it would have sounded silly since the San'tok was a butterfly when it just came out. Pretty and acrobatic but mostly harmless. But now that they increased the capacitor and it actually packs a punch .. a military variant being a Hornet-killer can make sense.
Now this is one ship I'm really looking forward to flying and experiencing. All the moving parts, weird design and that cockpit! absolutely yes. I enjoyed Syulen so much that I had dreams about it for a couple of nights. Wonder what Santokyai will do. Finding out the lore about the whole secrecy and UEE finding out about it was beautiful. I know that the lore is ever changing but man, they really do put some effort in making it all believable. Too bad that the years and timings of ship releases in the game and in the lore just don't work out.
Just remember this. If the Xi'an gave up the San'Tok.Yai.......... They've got something better. Thankfully the Xi'an are not actually interested in an aggressed war with Humanity.
I somewhat disagree with the notion that a Hard Counter to the F7A would carry over to the F8A. While the Lightning can be considered a "Big Brother" to the Hornet in many respects, this evolution has lead to a different set of strengths and weaknesses between the two models. Then again, that could just be the UEE patriotism talking.

Humans make F7A hornet, xian respond with a better ship. Xian make San Tok yai: humans make F8 Lightning to counter. The arms race will not end only improve technology.
Man I hope that we can prevent a war with the Xi'an. While I prefer Tevarin to Xi'an, I do like that more recently our species started to become more amicable towards each other.
Gross. How is it possible to like the xenos? They aren’t human, they definitionally aren’t people, and can’t possibly have any real common ground. Any life not born on Mother Tera is fundamentally anathema to us, and it’s disgusting to accept the risk to trillions of unborn humans by tolerating the existence of xenos.
